OpenSUSE Network :: Pppoe - Stuck And Doesn't Connect To Eth0
Jun 30, 2010
i'm using opensuse 11.3 and can't connect to the internet, my eth0 interface (which would be my modem i suppose) is found and when i "activate" it with ifup eth0, it gets stuck waiting for data (says so in ifstatus). If i try with knetworkmanager it is also stuck and doesn't connect to eth0. If i try to make it connect at boot, it doesn't work either.
I think the problem might be that in windows xp my modem has a "limited connection" but i can connect with my pppoe password anyway, but opensuse won't let me connect until it finds eth0 is working correctly which it never will because of how the internet company configures the modems i think. I don't know with which command i could "force" the pppoe connection even without a good connection to the modem, maybe that would work. But on the other hand, with other distros i can connect just fine so i don't know really.

I'm using CENTOS 5.5 and I want to connect to internet using 2 pppoe accounts same ISP and i have a sigle NIC eth0.I used adsl-setup to create pppoe connections, 1 is ppp0 and second is ppp1. When i use /sbin/ifup ppp0 it works, i can use the internet, but when i try to use /sbin/ifup ppp1 while ppp0 is connected, nothing happens, i did ifconfig and there is only ppp0 showing.I'm a BIG NEWBIE of linux, i need to know step by step how to make this work, i heard something about a virtual network... but nothing clear.

I am relatively new at Linux and am having some problems with an install of openSUSE 11.2. I installed 11.2 on my Thinkpad X31 dual boot with WinXP. It seems to work very well except the network. I looked up swerdna's instructions on setting network cards up. I used YaST to try and set the system up as described in swerdna's instructions. Everything looks fine my network card and wireless card show up in the overview settings screen and everything sets up fine. But when I exit YaST the network doest show up no icon in the system tray and it doesn't even try to connect.
I did go into hardware to see if it was identifying my hardware and my network card shows up as "Thinkpad R40" and the wireless shows up as Cisco Aironet Wireless 802.11b. As far as I know this is correct. I have tried three other distro's and this one has gotten the closest to working so far.

I have x11 forwarding enabled in /etc/ssh/sshd_config on a suse 11.2 32 bit box running kde I can open x apps on a windows machine using xming and putty just fine, but when I boot the same machine into suse 11.2 64 bit using kde and try using konsole I get: cannot connect to x server
The command I'm using to log in is: ssh -X -l username host I doubt the problem is with the server I'm logging into or it wouldn't work in windows, not really sure what to look for as I've never had a problem using x11 forwarding from a linux client before only windows ones

I would like to know how to configure a pppoe connexion? I am testing version 11.2 on live cd but I can't manage to connect my laptop. I used the "green plug software", I filled all the blanks (I am not a total beginner because I have been using Mandriva for a year) but afterwards I can't select pppoe instead of eth0 What should I do?
I read on this forum NET INSTALL PPPOE - Alionet, communaut francophone d'entraide openSUSE et SUSE Linux that the only reason that I can't configure a pppoe connexion is because I am using a live version of 11.2 as result that it only recognizes an ethernet connexion and a modem (everything I said, is said in the forum I linked, but you'll have to read it in french )
I try to configure a pppoe connexion to Tl2, my internet connexion provider. I live in France. My modem is a Bewan ADSL ethernet 100, no need to configure it.

Upgraded To Ubuntu 10.04 The Other Day. And when I first installed it everything worked great except for my sound card which I fixed. But there was no problem with connecting to my Router via an Ethernet cable. Then I updated the video card drivers, restarted my PC and it wouldn't connect. It would try over around 1-2 mins then tell me its disconnected. No green light activity on the router / network card either.
I've reinstalled fresh copies of Ubuntu a couple of times now, Hoping to get the default settings back. But nothing has worked since.
I looked around the net and found quite a few people had this problem on previous versions of Ubuntu but it would seem most of there fixes were for there Version, so it hasn't helped me.
Heres some info:
ifconfig:
I've tried all the various things from dhclient to ifup/ifdown etc etc.

I tried for two days to install ubuntu server to my computer from a cd. Whenever I tried burning to a CD-RW (using two programs at highest and lowest speeds), my cd always said it had corrupt files. So I setup a virtualbox harddisk that was setup tonuse my slave harddisk and installed ubuntu server in virtualbox successfully. Now when I boot my server, it won't connect to my network. Long story short, I have taken lo out of my interfaces and tried resetting my dhcp ip address by releasing and renewing it using dhclient. I have realized that eth0 doesn't exist (it shows up in windows). I think that all I need to do is add eth0 to ubuntu...

I have a ppoe internet connection. I was easier and faster to configure it in Yast than in Windows XP. When
The provider here sometimes goes through some problems and the connection may disappear and return at any unexpected moment. In Windows there is a icon on system tray that dysplays such information and I know when the connection is gone. It also allows me to try to reconnect manually. Where do I find these information on Opensuse here do I manage to reconnect. In Windows it was also possible to set the connection to re-dial automatically when it was out. It was very useful if it failed in the middle of a download, the system reconnected and the download manager retried until download resumed. Is there some way to adjust opensuse to reconnect automatically when connection fails or some software that does it? Furthermore, is there a good download manager that works in Opensuse that pause, accelerates downloads and retries when connection fails?

I need to implement at my sister this kind of connection: She is connected on Local area network that has about 50-80 pc's, but for internet access she must start an pppoe connection. For now when she wants to use lan she must put her local address (ps: they dont have dhcp), for pppoe she uses dhcp. Problem is that on that way she can't access lan and internet at the same time. She must disconnect from lan and then start pppoe connection and vice versa. I'm intrested if it is possible to have lan access at the same time as internet access. some kind of tunel through lan up to isp. I was googling little and so PPPoE tunneling. Is it that what I need here?

If I made a distro from scratch it would have been Lubuntu, cept I'm sure my theming would have been horrible. Now Ive installed on a couple of my Laptops, and even had a few friends convert, and for the most part everything is hunkus doris, cept one small issue thats keeping me from slapping it on my trusty laptop. I'm lost as to what the problem could be. Ive tried just about all I can think of, but I use sprint mobile broadband to connect to the net and then use Network Manager to share this connection with the laptops and Palmtops around the house. I can get my sprint modem to connect thats not a big problem the problem is now I cannot get the Auto Eth0 to connect to send out as a share. It just refuses to connect. Now this is not a Lubuntu problem at all Im sure its somehow a Lxde problem, as Mint Lxde, PeppermintOS, and so on do the same thing, refusing to connect Auto Eth0 while Sprint is connected. Any Gnome based distro this works flawless, as does Xfce distros, so Im sure this is somehow something within Lxde. Im sure its down to just "missing" a file or some stupid overlooked thing.

Last night while setting up wired & wireless connection in openSuse 11.2 Gnome version via YAST's ifup, I got wireless but lost wired connection (interface eth0). Dmesg shows that eth0 became eth1. I cannot get eth0 back. Is there any way to remedy this situation, eg. get info from the Ubuntu partition in my triple-boot laptop, without having to re-install openSUSE?

I'm new to this forum site and I was wondering how can I bridge a network between the eth0 and wlan0 connections?my eth0 NIC is a RealTek RTL8111B 10/100/1000 Ethernet Card (OnBoard) and my wlan0 NIC is a RealTek RTL8187B 802.11b/g WiFi USB Adapter Card. Are there any utilities, such as bridge-utils that I can use, except for Firestarter since Firestarter states that the eth0 connection is not established, or do I right-click on the network icon and select Edit Connections and go to Auto eth0 and under the IPv4 Address setting and select Shared to other computers and run a live connection there? The main reason is that I need an Internet connection for my Xbox 360, which is connected to my Linksys WRT54G 802.11b/g Wireless Router, that has DD-WRT firmware installed and 4 WiFi hotspots for any wireless device, such as my PSP, DS, DS Lite, Wii, Laptop(s), my brother's PC (needs a WiFi card), and my dad's PC (needs either a WiFi card or an Internet connection from my brother's computer to my dad's PC)
Here are my Computer Specs:

2GB DDR-800 PC6400 Memory

When I attempt to connect to a wireless network, the network manager asks me for the network's password, then says 'setting network address' for 20 or so seconds, then asks me for some random Hex or ASCII key in the same type of window I put the password in (Secrets for Noel -- KDE Daemon). Since a key is already typed into the window, I press OK, which then causes the network manager to go back to 'setting network address', then the window pops up again and keeps repeating itself.
I'm running Opensuse 11.4 with KDE, and my driver is ath9k. I don't know much about linux so please don't tell me to 'recompile this' or 'change this setting' without explaining how to do it. Please help, I've been unable to connect to wireless in OpenSUSE for 2 weeks now.

I tried to update my fully-working 64-bit 11.1 system to 11.2. I used the network install and chose the Update option. It took a few hours so I didn't sit through the entire installation but when I returned the 11.2 login screen was displayed. Having logged in, however, I found that I couldn't access the network. The boot log showed that network had failed to start. "ifconfig" lists only the "lo" interface. "ifstatus eth0" returns "Interface eth0 is not available"
Network Settings in YaST lists 2 entries in the Overview tab. The first entry has Name:"NetXtreme BCM5755 Gigabit Ethernet PCI Express" and IP Address: "Not configured".The detail pane for this entry shows "NetXtreme BCM5755 Gigabit Ethernet PCI Express (Not connected) BusID:0000:3f00.0 Unable to configure the network card because the kernel device (eth0, wlan0) is not present. This is mostly caused by missing firmware (for wlan devices). See dmesg output for details". The Edit and Delete buttons are both disabled for this entry.
The second entry has exactly the same name as the first with the IP Address listed as "DHCP4". I assume this was the entry that was carried over from the 11.1 system. The detail pane for this entry shows "NetXtreme BCM5755 Gigabit Ethernet PCI Express (No hwinfo) Device Name: eth0. Started automatically at boot. IP address assigned using DHCP4". The Edit and Delete buttons are both enabled for this entry.lspci reports "3f:00.0 Ethernet controller: Broadcom Corporation NetXtreme BCM5755 Gigabit Ethernet PCI Express (rev 02)"
lsmod lists only "edd", "loop", "sr_mod", "sg", "cdrom" and "dm_mod".
The files in /etc/sysconfig/network/ are "if-down.d/", "if-up.d/", "providers/", "scripts/", "config", "dhcp", "ifcfg-eth0", "ifcfg-lo", "ifcfg.template", "ifroute-lo",

My eth0 is not up everytime at boot up. I will need to <service network restart> to get it up.
I have used yast's /etc/sysconfig editor to set /etc/sysconfig/network/config -> MANDATORY_DEVICES to eth0
And I have also added <alias eth0 e1000e> to /etc/modprobe.conf.local
And also set eth0 device to activate device at boot time using Network Card Setup.
But eth0 is still not starting up at boot time. What should I do to get it up at boot time?
I'm using openSUSE 10.3. And no, I'm am unable to move to 11.2

Last weekend I upgraded my Opensuse 11.1 machine (pretty clean) to 11.3. After the upgrade, the NVidia graphics no longer worked, but more importantly, eth0 was not bound to my Intel 82566DC gigabit ethernet controller. I fooled around in yast network devices long enough to know that everything there is configured correctly. The Yast message at the bottom of the Network Settings screen says:
"Unable to configure the network card because the kernel device (eth0, wlan0) is not present. This is mostly caused by missing firmware (for wlan devices). See dmesg output for details."dmesg output shows nothing related to networking. The boot screen shows:
Setting up (localfs) network interfaces:
lo ...
Waiting for mandatory devices: eth0 __NCS__
29 28 27 ... 1 0 ... failed
eth0 no interface found ... failed
[code].....
Any ideas here? I've googled till my fingers were tired and all I've found are references from folks with real hardware issues. This machine worked fine for me under 11.1. Now I can't get 11.3 to bind the nic.

I want to set my desktop IP address to always be 192.168.1.2. The NetworkManager connects to the network automatically and the IP address is assigned randomly. I can set up another connection in NetworkManager and always change over. But is there any way to make the default eth0 interface to be permanently set to a certain address (using NetworkManager, not ifup)?

I have TP-LINK router that sends wireless signal through the house which I'm using on my laptop's Ubuntu to connect on the internet, also I can connect with Ubuntu from laptop via the same cable that I'm trying to use on my desktop, so the router and cable are working. Also on my dekstop I've installed Windows 7 and can't connect from there either. The computer is new so i doubt that there is something wrong with its hardware. It all started when my connection disappeared. My ISP advised me to reset my router by plugging out the power cable and plugging it back in after 5min, and so I did. After that I could connect only from laptop. Tried to reinstall suse, to install ubuntu, but nothing worked. When I installed suse on my friend's computer, the only thing that I had to do is to open YaST and change the Network setup method from ifup to the NetworkManager, and also insert the MAC adress in the connection's properties. Tried that on my computer, but also didn't work.

I tryed to setup a second IP address with yast on a openSUSE 11.2 on eth0 as eth0:2nd but with a different firewall zone. But SUSE firewall just see eth0.
I want to define with services are available on with IP address. Also with custom rules I can't specify a destination IP.
So now can I do this with yast? Or have I todo this manually without SUSE firewall?

I have been noticing a trend on boxes running 11.4 getting RX dropped packets where prior to 11.4 they did not get them. Basically every box running 11.4 now logs dropped RX packets. Have tried changing cables, and in one case replaced the NIC with a different brand (and driver) nic. Also played with receive buffers and yet the counters still increment. In addition to OpenSUSE, I run several operating systems to include Centos, Scientific Linux, Debian, OpenIndiana, HP-UX, VMS and so forth. So far this anomaly has only shown up on machines running OpenSUSE 11.4. Any one else noticing this on your OS 11.4 machines? If so, were you able to resolve?

Yesterday I bought a netbook and a wifi router (TP-Link), I connected the ADSL modem to the router, then the router (output) to the ehternet in the desktop with U 9.10. I configured the router to dial the modem.
The router dials the modem, the modem connects, and I have wifi at home, the netbook (still with W7) connects to the wifi network. So far so good.
BUT now the Ubuntu in the desktop doesn't connect. No netwok. If I run sudo pppoeconf, after a scanning process it says that probably there's another pppoe proccess that is controlling the modem. I guess it tries to dial.
Later, when I install U 10.10 in the notebook I'll have to struggle with the wifi network..
