OpenSUSE Network :: NFS Automount Stopped Working - System Error: Connection Refused
Jul 6, 2010
I got connecting to our NAS over NFS working perfectly. Direct NAS Reading & Writing - How? But on Saturday I found out it had stopped working. For no apparent reason, not straight after an update either I don't think. When I manually try to mount --verbose:
mount 192.168.100.14:/IHL /mnt/IHL --verbose
mount: no type was given - I'll assume nfs because of the colon
mount.nfs: timeout set for Tue Jul 6 14:48:32 2010
mount.nfs: text-based options: 'addr=192.168.100.14'
mount.nfs: Unable to connect to 192.168.100.14:111, errno 111 (Connection refused)
mount.nfs: mount to NFS server '192.168.100.14:/IHL' failed: System Error: Connection refused
Corresponding fstab line that used to work just fine. 192.168.100.14:/IHL /mnt/IHL nfs auto 0 0 For now, I can drop back to Samba but this is a PITA as I can't open OpenOffice documents and write to them directly on the NAS. The fact smb://192.168.100.14/IHL works proves networking wise we're cool too. There is no firewall between this PC and the NAS, the NAS is instructed to allow my PC's LAN IP full access. OpenSuse's software firewall has been told to allow NFS Client too. Why would this setup break out of nowhere? How can I debug this best? I see nothing relevant in /var/log/messages How can I get it to work again? A hopeful reboot didn't do its usual wonders...

I have a machine running with slackware64 13.1 and vnc servers is installed on it. It worked for months until yesterday, when I couldnt connect to the machine remotely.
I have 2 vnc "users" on this machine, root and "user". Each have their own desktop. Root has desktop :1 and user had desktop :2. Simple enough.
VNC servers is started via /etc/rc.d/rc.local with the command:
Code:
Code:
It worked flawlessly. I use the very same configuration on my home server, never had a glitch.
From the "distant" machine, I get this error when I try to connect:
Code:
Unable to connect to VNC server
What has changed so it no longer works? I assume its not a network problem since the machines are all located in my home network and there is no firewall or router in between them.

I installed OpenSuSE 11.3. The only "extra" package I put in after the install was VirtualBox-ose. The firewall is disabled. I gave the machine a static IP address. I can get to the Internet from the machine. I enabled sshd to start on boot with "chkconfig sshd on" and also verified the service is running on the machine. I can ssh user@localhost from the machine as well.
When I try to connect to SSH from another machine, I get a connection refused. I verify that the firewall is down. I also try to get to VNC -- same problem: Connection refused. I ping the machine for fun. If I try to SSH again, it sometimes gives me a logon? I would check the server logs for the connection refused, but I wouldn't know where to look. I started in /var/log/messages, but nothing seemed to jump out there. I also find it strange because I can RDP to a windows guest running under VirtualBox. The Windows guest uses Bridged Network and DHCP.
I also find it interesting that I sometimes type a "ping google.com" from the 11.3 box and it will just hang - no output. Then I open firefox and get to the internet. All of a sudden, ping starts to give output. Could this be a neetwork card issue? A configuration issue? I don't know where to start.

I am running 11.2 and set ssh to boot at runlevel 3 and 5 through yast and started the service through the terminal. I have turned off the firewall on my wireless router and in the local firewall. When I try to connect from a machine in my office, I get the following
Code:
ssh: connect to host xx.xxx.xx.xxx port 22: Connection refused
When I run telnet from the machine, I get:
Code:
telnet: connect to address xx.xxx.xxx.xx: Connection refused
telnet: Unable to connect to remote host: Connection refused
netstat -tlnp on my machine shows:
Code:
tcp 0 0 :::22 :::* LISTEN 31622/sshd

I have Debian installed a year ago, working perfectly until last week when network card connected to internet stopped to communicate. I did no change in configuration. It just stopped to work while I was reading an online web page. Network card connected to local network still works fine.
I thought it might be a NIC failure so I installed a new PCI NIC but no change, still no communication throught this NIC.
I verified/changed cable between NIC and the router, no luck. If I connect the same cable from router to a Windows PC, everything is OK. If I connect back to Debian machine, it does not work.
I tried connect this NIC with a different router with DHCP enabled, nothing, NIC will not communicate with DHCP server.
I tried to set static IP, no change.
Today I booted a Knoppix 6.2 and this NIC worked perfetly! It set up using DHCP, I could access the internet.
I booted machine as usual and the problem still persists of course.
This is information captured immediately after boot. The trouble NIC is eth0 after boot finishes.
All this was captured with eth0 connect to a router with DHCP enabled. There is no DHCP entry in syslog related to eth0. Reinstall is the very last option.

My main PC has AN Athlon X2 4600+ on an Asus M2npv-vm. Has been working fine for ages running Ubuntu. Today it the system locked up and I had to do a reset. Since then it will not connect to the router or cable modem. I can connect another PC to the router, so that looks okay.
What can I do to test the network connection from Ubuntu? It's not even getting an IP.
I suppose it could be something has died in the hardware, but want to eliminate other possibilities first.

I'm running ubuntu 10.04 and suddenly when plugging my cameras or usb sticks, they don't automount anymore, but they did before. What changed is last days I tried to build and install nautilus-sendto manually from source, and it required dependencies including GTK+3.0 (unstable), I don't know what happened exactly or if my system is broken, because some of this packages built and installed fine and others failed. If someone wants to help with that to get my installation to its original state it would be awesome.I could mount my usb stick installing usbmount, it worked, but I didn't need this before. What I want now is to mount my cameras: here is the output for:
Code:
lsusb
gvfs-mount -l

I've run into a situation where knetworkmanager tells me networking is disabled. If I switch to the ifup method in Yast then I can get online but when I switch back to user controlled knetworkmanager tells me that networking is disabled.I've actually had this happen twice. The first time I somehow managed to get it working again (I thought it was by right clicking on the icon in the system tray). This time I don't see the same option.Has anybody got any suggestions on how to get knetworkmanager working again.

I have been using Opensuse since 11.0, and I never had any problems with the setup of CUPS printing (university based). Now for the first time, after many months of flawless printing using 11.2, after installing 11.3 the printing has stopped working. I use the same method: Print via print server machine -> CUPS server (IPP) and I test the connection. In my 11.2 it shows "OK", in 11.3 (I also tried with firewall off) I am getting the following (I have substituted the actual values with xxx for privacy).

I managed to kill KNetworkManager today and I'm not sure what I did. This is a netbook running openSUSE 11.4 with all updates applied and KDE 3.5 (from the openSUSE repository). Normally, I use knetworkmanager to connect to the Internet. Everything was working fine this morning and today I decided to apply whole disk encryption (using cryptsetup and luks) to it.
So, I backed up the files, encrypted the partitions, made some adjustments to /etc/fstab and /boot/grub/menu.lst, and copied the files back. Everything is working fine, except for knetworkmanager. When it goes to connect, it starts off with the "gray Earth" (to represent no connection) and then it switches to the "connecting" icon for a fraction of a second, and then it's back to the "gray Earth". Looking at the output of iwconfig, it hasn't connected to the router at all (the essid is blank).
The connection works fine using ifup. I tried using cnetworkmanager (the console version) and it spits out errors like this:
Code:

I've just completed a fresh install of Ubuntu Server (x64) on a HP Proliant N36L. During the installation I selected to install LAMP, SAMBA and SSH. To continue the installation of software on the server I wanted to connect remotely from windows PC on the same LAN. I am using PuTTY but when I try to connect I get "Error:Connection Refused". I have trawled the forums regarding the setup of putty and openssh and everything appears to be correctly configured.I have checked that the services are running on the server and that the IP address for the server is correct. The guides I have read online suggest that ssh should be correctly configured as part of the install, so why can I not connect from the same LAN?Is the firewall enabled by default during install?

I have a 'little' problem with my vps, which was working before. Here is what I made:
- order an new IP and I was trying to modify /etc/network/interfaces in order to configure the ip
- even if I was logged as root, I wasn't able to modify 'interfaces' so I tried sudo and alsoto mount (different commands I found.)
- rebooted the VPS
Current situation: I can access ssh, but ispconfig3 and the websites are not working anymore.

I need to browse the net more securely and bypass throttling by an infrastructure-dictator by creating a SSH Tunnel directly to my internet service provider and use it as proxy.
I tried both a dynamic and local tunnel, was a able to connect to the server and log-in just fine, but when I tried to surf I get a 'Connection refused' error.
Here's what I tried:
Code:
ssh -D 8022 user@tunnel.host -N
ssh -L 8022:tunnel.host:8080 user@tunnel.host -N
(not at the same time of course)
Then I set 127.0.0.1:8022 as proxy in browser settings. As long as the tunnel is open the browser displays a blank page with no error when I try to open a remote web page, while the terminal gives me a 'Connection refused' error.
I'm using OpenSSH_4.7p1 Debian-8ubuntu1.2, OpenSSL 0.9.8g 19 Oct 2007 on Xubuntu Hardy.
In case anybody is wondering this is perfectly legitimate. The tunnel.host I connect to is a server set-up by my ISP specifically for this purpose.
Either of the examples above should work as others who have the same ISP reported that it works. Therefore, I suspect this is an issue with my own security settings which are slightly on the paranoid side but I can't figure out what. Stopping ufw and explicitly opening port 8022 didn't help.

I have configured a Nagios server which is working well with all king of clients. But when I added a new windows machine to monitor, it gives a error message "connection refused". I have set everything as prior machines.
Now, I just wanted to know the process by which we can check if server is able to communicate with the client's NSclient daemon. In Linux, we simply issue "./check_nrpe -H hostname" and if ok, it gives the NRPE version which indicates the status ok.
