OpenSUSE Network :: Configuring File Sharing On Network Using Suse

Jun 27, 2011

I just installed suse on this computer, and am wanting to allow other computers to store files on it as a file server. I was reading the online manual and in the personal file preferences, it shows an option to enable 'share public files over network'. The problem is I don't see that option when I open up file preferences. All I see is an option to allow sharing using bluetooth, nothing about sharing over the network. When I look in the network I can see the computer running suse, but when I try to connect to it, it says 'unable to mount drive: connection refused by server.'

OpenSUSE Network :: SUSE 11.3 No Network Access With Static IP

Aug 20, 2010

New SUSE 11.3 install connects to network/internet etc OK with DHCP-assigned IP address. When I switch to static IP, I can no longer ping internal network, or anything else. This works OK with SUSE 11.2 on same hardware and (as far as I can see) same setup. Some diagnostics are shown below.

Firewall
Disabling the firewall makes no difference.

Not using a network manager (can't see how to assign fixed address if I do - all greyed out).

ifup eth0:
eth0 device: Intel Corporation 82540EM Gigabit Ethernet Controller (rev 02)
SuSEfirewall2: Warning: no default firewall zone defined, assuming 'ext'
(not sure why the warning - eth0 is assigned to external in the firewall setup).

OpenSUSE Network :: Active Directory - Cannot See Suse In Network

Apr 15, 2011

I am attempting to setup a linux file server in active directory. It has been kind of an ongoing project(nightmare) for me... I have tried a few distributions of linux and I have to say I really enjoy openSUSE. YaST is my best friend. Now to the problem at hand.

I have samba installed and configured for the domain. I was able to successfully join the machine to the domain. I can even log on using domain user names and passwords (more than I was able to accomplish with other distros...). Where I am having a problem currently is I cannot see the suse machine from a windows machine. I can access shares from suse to windows though.

So,no web2c/kpathsea-specific files.

I found several tutorials on the web for using netatalk over ssh, but all these tutorials are for Ubuntu and require the debian package. Has anybody compiled netatalk over ssh under SuSE? I cannot verify if the netatalk package installed by the SuSE installer has been compiled with this option. Alternatively could somebody point me to any documentation to help me compile netatalk? I tried reading the netatalk manual from sourceforge, but that asks for installation of a Berkley DB that is not required under Ubuntu.

OpenSUSE Network :: Ip-forwarding After Migration To Suse-11.2?

Jan 12, 2010

Ethernet configuration:
- eth0 private net
- eth1 internet

eth1 is connected to a cable modem and uses dhcp. After migrating to suse-11.2 ip-forwarding (once the system is up and running) is sometimes deactivated and i have no clue why. /etc/syslog.conf has an entry net.ipv4.ip_forwarding = 1

i have modified the SuSE-scripts /sbin/SuSEfirewall /sbin/ifup-dhcp /etc/init.d/SuSEfirewall2_setup to make sure each time my firewall-rules are loaded ip-forwarding is explicitly enabled. This worked perfectly with suse-11.0. Now ip-forwarding is enabled after a system reboot or after one of the above scripts is called, but somewhere somehow ip-forwarding is always deactivated and i have no idea how this happens. This may happen after 5 minutes or after 5 hours. As a workaround i created a cronjob running every 5 minutes issuing a sysctl-command to enable ip-forwarding.

OpenSUSE Network :: Get Juniper Web SSL VPN's RDP To Work In SUSE?

Apr 13, 2010

One of biggest reason I need to use windows is because my company uses Juniper SSL VPN to remote desktop into our company's computer. Our company doesn't allow any native linux/windows app client, only the web SSL VPN is enabled.

Looks like this Juniper SSL VPN only works on windows computers. It makes the windows remote desktop client connect over the SSL web VPN from browser. Of course, linux/SUSE doesn't have the windows desktop client. Is there any way to get RDP work through the given SSL VPN? Otherwise, I guess I need go back install windows and starting using it again.

OpenSUSE Network :: How Is SUSE Better At Being Server / Networking OS

Aug 19, 2010

I know openSUSE (and SUSE Enterprise) work great with windows Active Directory. Now, I understand that Linux systems are far more stable and secure (if configured properly). What about features though? What does openSUSE/Linux have instead of AD for file/folder sharing across the network? Are there roaming profiles? If so, how do I use that?I love openSUSE because of yast (and a few other things). And It's my main LinuxOS on my tower. I am still in college getting my certs and a degree (in networking). I really want to understand why Linux (openSUSE/ SUSE enterprise) is a better networking solution as opposed to Windows Sever 2003/2008.Also, why SUSE over RHEL/CentOS? Yast is awesome, but are there other reasons?

I know that's a lot to ask in one post. Feel free to include links so you won't have to type too much.I'd like both personal opinions, hard facts, and just general user experiences as to the features that make Linux (openSUSE) better, not just the stability and security.

OpenSUSE Network :: Suse Firewall Blocking Vnc Over Ssh?

Sep 8, 2010

I've setup vnc over ssh tunnelling however the Suse firewall seems to be blocking it. On the local host I have this in ~/.ssh/config:LocalForward localhost:5900 remotehost.com:5900 The problem is that this only works when I either disable the firewall or add an exception for VNC. Both of these actions defeat the whole purpose of ssh tunnelling since they leave my VNC port open to the outside world (very insecure).

OpenSUSE Wireless :: RT3562STA Driver Not Working With Suse 11.3?

Nov 6, 2010

I have a Rosewill RNX-N150pc wireless card that's been working great with Suse 11.2. But with 11.3, it's able to scan for my wireless network, and I see RX/TX packets moving, but DHCP isn't able to get an address. I've tried the 2010_0115_RT3562_RT3062_Linux_STA_V2.3.0.0 and 010_07_16_RT3062_Linux_STA_v2.4.0.0 drivers from the Rosewill site, and the rt3562sta-kmp-desktop-2.4.0.0_k2.6.34.0_12-1.1.i586.rpm package from Suse, all with the same result. I've even tried forcing an IP address on the interface with 'ifconfig', so my current guess is that the WPA-PSK security isn't working.

OpenSUSE Network :: Unable To Share Folder With Suse 11.2?

I have a windows machine (in a domain) and I have created 2 Virtual Machines with Suse 11.2 installed on them. Now, I want to share a folder in windows to both Suse images. Now, I want a user in my Linux box (both Linux images)to be able to write to the shared folder in windows (actually both linux images will write to the shared folder but it is based on acquairing locks and releasing them to be able to use the shared folder on windows).

I tried etc fstab and lot other options but my efforts were in vain.Simply put - I need a user in my linux box (suse 11.2) to be able to write to a windows shared folder.

OpenSUSE Network :: File Transfer Suse To Windows?

Jan 30, 2010

I am currently running Windows Xp with service pack 3 and OpenSuse 11.0 (i586) on the same machine on separate hard drives. here are the specs on the machine. (Note: it is only a single core machine. I have no idea why both Suse and Windows say it is dual core as the processor was bought and installed months before dual cores went on the market.)

OS Information
OS: Linux 2.6.25.20-0.5-default i686
Current user: telknor@linux-l3e2
System: openSUSE 11.0 (i586)
KDE: 4.0.4 (KDE 4.0.4 >= 20080505) "release 15.4"

[Code]....

Now on to my problem. About a year ago I had to wipe my Windows drive and backed up about 32 GB of stuff from it to my OpenSuse drive. I did this from the Suse OS using Dolphin. In fact I can see, open, change, delete, modify layout, and move stuff around on the Windows drive all day long from Suse. I can as I said pull stuff over to the Suse drive from Windows drive while in Suse and save to Suse drive. Now I have need of the stuff that was moved but Windows does not see the Suse drive for what it is. Just says 'unknown partion type' gives size in GB and ignores it otherwise. From Suse if I try to move stuff back to the Windows drive it starts to transfer then stops and tells me it does not have permission to access the destination drive, folder, or location depending on how I tried to save it to the Windows drive. Adding new hard drives to the system does not help and the external 1 TB drive we have Suse can see it but will not do anything with it. The thumb drives on the other hand Suse does not have a problem with. It will open, read, and write to them all day long. Suse will not access the network to dump files to the network file server and it does not see any other systems on the network not even the ones running the same OS. I want to do the following:

1. Move the Windows files from the Suse drive to the Windows drive in same machine or to the network file server (also a windows machine)

2. Move all the Suse files to another machine running same Suse OS.

3. Wipe the Suse drive in this Machine so that Windows can use it.

OpenSUSE Network :: Remote Desktop To SUSE From Windows

Feb 26, 2010

I have been reading up around the internet that although it is possible to use MSTSC.exe under Windows XP to connect back to a Suse machine running XRDP (I believe).I had been working fine with Suse 11.0 until today. I had not made any changes to my local network but now whenever I try to connect in, I am told that I can not start the session as the sesman logon fails!

I tail'ed /var/log/messages but there is nothing written to that log when I try (interestingly enough, I do get the logon prompt that requests username, password and session type - I usually select KDE3 but have tried all options - and get the error after clicking OK).

My questions:-
1. Is XRDP under 11.1 any better (more stable as when it worked, I use to get kicked out a lot under 11.0)
2. What log file should I be trying to tail so I can see what is happening?

I must use Linux as the back end, I don't want to use a hacked copy of XP anymore and don't want to pay for a real version when Linux is free and should by now be able to grant me access to my network from a remote location!VNC is not an option as I will be wanting to log on more than one user at the same time.

OpenSUSE Network :: Replace Windows AD Domain In Suse?

May 29, 2010

At home I am using a Windows Server 2003 as Domain controller with Active Directory. My "client" computers are all currently running Windows XP. They all require CONTROL-ALT-DELETE and the user to enter their credentials before they will allow logon. Shared files reside on various other Server 2003 machines and have restrictions on so only specific users can access certain resources.

For example, I have the family finances and other important documents in a share named 'Private-Files', only members of the 'PrivateFiles' global group have access. Likewise, I have my movies sorted into their appropriate age categories - after all, I don't want my 5 year old son accidentally watching Aliens! So this all works but as you can imagine, the copies of Windows XP and Server 2003 are far from legitimate. I want to go legal and the only real way I can afford to do this is to switch over to Linux.

I have used Suse, Ubuntu, Fedora and a few other distros in the past and found that for ease of use, I want to use Ubuntu on the desktop computers but power the servers with Open Suse. The problem is, although I can install the OSes, I have no idea where to proceed from there - for example, how do I create a Domain in Suse? Where and how do I create domain users and groups? How do I set permissions on shares for the domain users?
