OpenSUSE Network :: Sometimes Suse Loosing Connection?
Apr 8, 2011
I'm dummy in linux world and maybe someone can help? Installed Opensuse 11.4 64bit on Hyper-V virtual machine all is working fine except sometimes lan connection is lost.
Code:
/etc/init.d/network restart
is not helping and I need manual reboot. Why that? What's problem? In routes table I can see default gw.
Code:

Opensuse 11.2 - wired internet connection
I keep losing internet connectivity from within OpenSuse. I've had ubuntu/kubuntu beforeand never had a problem. I installed opensuse and now after a few minutes of browsing I'll lose my internet connection.I also dual boot into winXP without any problems.I noticed that when the connection is lost I can't even reach my router - which is where I'm getting the wired connection from.So it's not just the outside internet but the local network too. It only happens within opensuse.

Running Debian GNU / Linux 5.0.4 on an older Gateway tower. Have been using this for a year now but it seemed lately that the browser was loading pages slowly. I checked the Network Icon and every time I check it indicates "disconnected" then refreshes and indicates connected. The log makes references to redat, which my machine has nothing to do with? I checked the system logs and get the following repeated messages:

The WIFI adapter is working, WIN driver is in use (with ndiswrapper). Linux driver doesn't exist. No issues until computer does to Sleep mode. Then just reboot it. Some times iwconfig commands helps.

I have been successfully using my speedtouch usb 330 for years.
Now suddenly something weird occurs.I manage to stay connected a few minutes, afterwards the line drops down and I can't reconnect.
I switched the connection script to "verbose mode" and what I get is:
It seems that I can't get an answer from the provider, but if I reboot it connects at first attempts, but the connection falls down again after a few minutes.
I have dual boot. No similar problems is affecting the connection under Windows, so some hardware fault is ruled out as a possibility.

I do randomly (as far as I know) loose my wireless network connection. The only thing to do then is to restart my router and after that it works for a while. I know this is not a hardware issue because I don't have this problem with KDE, only in gnome. I think this problem occurred after I started using 10.04, but then I changed to KDE and forgot about it. But now I'm using gnome again and loosing my network connection over and over drives me mad

I just installed suse on this computer, and am wanting to allow other computers to store files on it as a file server. I was reading the online manual and in the personal file preferences, it shows an option to enable 'share public files over network'. The problem is I don't see that option when I open up file preferences. All I see is an option to allow sharing using bluetooth, nothing about sharing over the network. When I look in the network I can see the computer running suse, but when I try to connect to it, it says 'unable to mount drive: connection refused by server.'

I have an LG R-450 laptop with Ubuntu 10.04 installed in it. When I connect him to a network (either LAN or Wireless) it stays connected for a few minutes and then Just disconnects (without showing any sign of disconnection except no internet/skype/dropbox). Only way to renew connection is after startup. The network controller is SIS 191 Gigabit Ethernet adapter.

I have a problem with network on centos, after i restart the server it works for few hours/couple days, and the network is dropped. - no errors in the log, only that "Network is unreachable" I do 'service network restart' comes back on- directadmin, dns, awbs- everything works good, but only for few hours(never longer then couple days), and then it is dropped again. I searched many forums, and on one them someone wrote that it is because that static IP was used on the same network by other machine. I had a different server running with that ip on my network before, but it was few weeks ago, and there is no other server connected to the network right now (I have one desktop connected with dynamic ip, and it has no problem), and i still have the same problem.
I was suggested to set a cron jobs to restart network every few hours- i thing that is not a solution. Does anyone have any idea what could be a problem? Anyone had similar problems? What could be the reasons for the network to be dropped after few hours? Here is latest 'dmesg' output after losing network:

New SUSE 11.3 install connects to network/internet etc OK with DHCP-assigned IP address. When I switch to static IP, I can no longer ping internal network, or anything else. This works OK with SUSE 11.2 on same hardware and (as far as I can see) same setup. Some diagnostics are shown below.
Firewall
Disabling the firewall makes no difference.
Not using a network manager (can't see how to assign fixed address if I do - all greyed out).
ifup eth0:
eth0 device: Intel Corporation 82540EM Gigabit Ethernet Controller (rev 02)
SuSEfirewall2: Warning: no default firewall zone defined, assuming 'ext'
(not sure why the warning - eth0 is assigned to external in the firewall setup).

I am attempting to setup a linux file server in active directory. It has been kind of an ongoing project(nightmare) for me... I have tried a few distributions of linux and I have to say I really enjoy openSUSE. YaST is my best friend. Now to the problem at hand.
I have samba installed and configured for the domain. I was able to successfully join the machine to the domain. I can even log on using domain user names and passwords (more than I was able to accomplish with other distros...). Where I am having a problem currently is I cannot see the suse machine from a windows machine. I can access shares from suse to windows though.

I can make a connection to the vpn server, the connection starts, but nothing happens! My IP address remains the same as previous! There is nothing added to my Knetworkmanager, I'm a beginner I should use a pcf file for my vpn connection. I use it properly, I'm sure because the connection starts and an icon is added to my panel and remains until I disconnect.
I checked it via ifconfig -a, the last part (which is for vpn) is:
Code:

I've not found how to configure more than one ip address with network manager.Nor with kde nor with plasmoid network manager.I need several virtual ip addresses for eth0 when the "default" of eth0 is connected i.e. "Connected to Auto eth0" should initialize the virtual interfaces.I have not found no even how to configure the ip address.I think this will be used from ifup config in yast or not? There I have the virtual interfaces but they are not taken from network manager. And last but no least: Is it possible that when using network manager the eth0 is enabled even no user has logged in?

I deleted the firewall files "K09SuSEfirewall2_init", "K01SuSEfirewall2_setup", "S11SuSEfirewall2_setup" and "S01SuSEfirewall2_init" from "/etc/rc.d/rc5.d" in order to disable the firewall when rebooting.
As a consequence all network services are not working. I can't connect to any other machine nor to the internet.
I rebuilt the symbolic files based on the ones for runlevel 3, but still no network services are available.
Any suggestions how to make it work again? I'm using Suse 11.3.

Im new in this world of linux and suse. I have just installed the opensuse 11.2 in a Dell Inspiron 5160. Such laptop has a BCM4306 Wireless LAN controller. When I tried to configure a wlan connection, I found that the firmware was not installed. After looking in different forums, I installed the firmware b43. Now, my wlan card is abled to find the wireless of my router.
I have tried to configure a connection with YAST as well as with Network Manager, but both cases failled. Specifically, when I use Network manager, Im able to see in the applet my connection, how strong is the signal, but I see a yellow symbol (in one forum, such a box is shown with a green symbol).
I have check many time all about the secutity, encryption, and so one and all seems to be correct. But when I open the mozila firefox or the konqueror browser, no chance to surffer in internet. Now Im just a step to become crazy. The drivers are ok, the information about the router and the keys are ok, but in such a way, I am still harmloss.

I installed OpenSuSE 11.3. The only "extra" package I put in after the install was VirtualBox-ose. The firewall is disabled. I gave the machine a static IP address. I can get to the Internet from the machine. I enabled sshd to start on boot with "chkconfig sshd on" and also verified the service is running on the machine. I can ssh user@localhost from the machine as well.
When I try to connect to SSH from another machine, I get a connection refused. I verify that the firewall is down. I also try to get to VNC -- same problem: Connection refused. I ping the machine for fun. If I try to SSH again, it sometimes gives me a logon? I would check the server logs for the connection refused, but I wouldn't know where to look. I started in /var/log/messages, but nothing seemed to jump out there. I also find it strange because I can RDP to a windows guest running under VirtualBox. The Windows guest uses Bridged Network and DHCP.
I also find it interesting that I sometimes type a "ping google.com" from the 11.3 box and it will just hang - no output. Then I open firefox and get to the internet. All of a sudden, ping starts to give output. Could this be a neetwork card issue? A configuration issue? I don't know where to start.

So up until I updated from Opensuse 11.3 to 11.4, I hadn't any issues with my network connection. At least none worth mentioning. Once I installed 11.4, I've had weird issues with varying lengths of connection. Sometimes I can't connect anywhere, sometimes I can only get to the router, sometimes I'm 100%. I'd fiddle with YAST until everything worked. I honestly have no clue whether or not anything I did had any effect.
Enough of the iffy history, here's what's happening now. For the past few weeks up until last night, I have been at 100% connectivity. I never turned off my computer until last night (it just shut itself off, like the cord was unplugged. I dunno what happened, maybe it was my foot, maybe the PSU. I think it has happened before.). When I turned it back on, I was only able to connect as far as my router (192.168.1.1, a D-Link Gaming router that has always been very good to me). I could not make it to my modem (192.168.0.1, a Quest DSL modem. Once I can get here, then usually I'm good to go 100%).
I tried again this afternoon, and no change. I then get the crazy idea to unplug the ethernet cable from it's PCI-card home and return it to the onboard port (which I long ago declared defunct). Immediately after plugging it into that port, I ran "ping 192.168.0.1" and I started getting returns. I open up Firefox and try to load an external page, and nothing happens. I go back to the console that I was pinging from, and it had stopped. I start pinging my router, and no luck. What I conclude from my little experiment is that the router is not at fault.
1. It did not change at all between being at 100% and being at 0% after reboot.
2. I was able to get returns from the modem, past the router, for a brief period of time while using the defunct ethernet port.
Since I never had these problems before updating to 11.4, I'm inclined to believe that it was the update that started these problems.

In my client side, i got 4 machines(2 database server,2 application server). One database server for DC and another database server for DR. Similarly, I need to use the application server also. The two database server are having the same ip.(192.168.1.10) and two application server are having the same ip(192.168.1.11). But they give the another ip for all machines like below.
DC-Database server-10.168.12.40 DC-application server-10.168.12.21
DR-Database server-10.168.13.40 DR-application server-10.168.12.21
Now i want to do the IP Natting.

I just finished a fresh install of 11.3 on an HP 7900 small form factor and have no network connectivity. In Network Tools eth0 shows the state as inactive. Network Connections didn't have a connection, so after letting it create one there is no MAC address. I copied and pasted the MAC address from Network Connections eth0, set up a static address with default gateway, netmask, etc. all set appropriately and rebooted. Still no joy.
I want this to get an address via DHCP, I just set up a static address for testing.11.2 sensed the NIC without issue, but 11.3 doesn't seem to like me right now.I wanted to get this deployed on 40 machines today. Oh well.

I would like to use my SuSE 11.2 1TB RAID server to backup my mac using time machine. I found several tutorials on the web for using netatalk over ssh, but all these tutorials are for Ubuntu and require the debian package. Has anybody compiled netatalk over ssh under SuSE? I cannot verify if the netatalk package installed by the SuSE installer has been compiled with this option. Alternatively could somebody point me to any documentation to help me compile netatalk? I tried reading the netatalk manual from sourceforge, but that asks for installation of a Berkley DB that is not required under Ubuntu.

Ethernet configuration:
- eth0 private net
- eth1 internet
eth1 is connected to a cable modem and uses dhcp. After migrating to suse-11.2 ip-forwarding (once the system is up and running) is sometimes deactivated and i have no clue why. /etc/syslog.conf has an entry net.ipv4.ip_forwarding = 1
i have modified the SuSE-scripts /sbin/SuSEfirewall /sbin/ifup-dhcp /etc/init.d/SuSEfirewall2_setup to make sure each time my firewall-rules are loaded ip-forwarding is explicitly enabled. This worked perfectly with suse-11.0. Now ip-forwarding is enabled after a system reboot or after one of the above scripts is called, but somewhere somehow ip-forwarding is always deactivated and i have no idea how this happens. This may happen after 5 minutes or after 5 hours. As a workaround i created a cronjob running every 5 minutes issuing a sysctl-command to enable ip-forwarding.
