OpenSUSE Network :: E1000e In 11.3 Driver Failure
Aug 6, 2010
I ran into a problem that seems to be related to: [URL] with an HP Desktop. The desktop has a Intel 82567LM-3 on board gigabit ethernet adapter which on a fresh install of 11.3 would not operate properly. The e1000e driver was properly detected however on loading, the ethernet interface was never initialized. My solution was to get the latest e1000e driver from intel.com: Network Adapter Driver for PCI-E Gigabit Network Connections under Linux*

The module e1000e is loaded into system. At addition VLAN the system hangs at a stop VLAN or configure other devices (sound, video). In OpenSuSe 11.3 it worked correctly.

Recently, I decided to migrate from SuSE 11.2 to 11.4. My 11.2 installation was working fine with two VLANs and several VMs. I went the route of installing 11.4 from scratch rather than upgrading 11.2.
The installation went smoothly. Afterwards, I ran Yast and changed eth0 to a bonding interface. Then I added two VLANs that used the bonding interface. When I restarted the computer, I saw the following on the console: "Waiting for mandatory devices vlan3005 __NSC__". Then after a 30 second countdown:
"vlan3005 no interface found". The solution to that problem was to add "ETHERDEVICE='eth0'" to /etc/sysconfig/network/ifcfg-eth0.3005". Upon restarting the computer, I could see that DHCP started this time but didn't get an IP address and continued in the background while the rest of the console messages scrolled by. At the point where X kicks in and I should have gotten a GUI login window, the screen goes dark. I cannot get to a console (CTRL-ALT-F1 or F2) or any other GUI login window (CTRL-ALT-F7 F8 or F9).
The computer was completely unresponsive. I could not ssh in to it from another host nor could I ping it. I let it sit for a few minutes but nothing ever appeared on the console. There were no blinking lights on the keyboard. I had to power the computer off. I turned off VLAN trunking on the switch port and the computer booted up fine, without network access, of course. I checked the logs but could find no clues as to what happened. I suspect a kernel problem. However, before I proceed further, I thought I would post my problem here and see if anyone has had a similar problem and perhaps a solution.

After doing a clean base install of CentOS 5.3 on a test server, I started having problems with network disconnects. While SSH into the box, I would be intermittently disconnected from the SSH session. At first I thought it was my workstation, but after running ping tests from multiple machines on the network to the test box, it became apparent that the test box was dropping packets. When I lose my SSH connection, the pings also start timing out, for a few seconds, then start again. I increased the console logging and I can see when the ethernet port goes up and down when I physically disconnect the cable, but it does not go down or lose link when the disconnects occur. I changed the NIC ports being used and had the same result. I tried with a different switch with same result. I reinstalled CentOS 5.2 and the problem went away.
Upon further investigation, I found that CentOS 5.2 is using the e1000 driver for my NICs and CentOS 5.3 is using the e1000e driver. I resinstalled CentOS 5.3, and tried using the e1000 driver instead of the e1000e but it no longer detects my NIC's... apparently they moved the support from e1000 to e1000e. I have spent the last 3 days googleing for info on this problem and have not found a solution. Any recommendations? Should I submit a bug report?

I just built some machines with the Intel 82574L gigabit ethernet chip, loaded Fedora 14, and discovered a problem with the e1000e driver dying after a few minutes. A little time spent perusing the web told me that the same driver had problems in Fedora 12 and Fedora 13 as well. Congrats to Fedora for the hat trick. As of kernel 2.6.35.10-74.fc14.x86_64, e1000e driver 1.0.2-k4 still had bugs.[URL]

When I try to instal the rpm I downloaded from canons support website after authentication the install process fails with the following error report: [PK_TMP_DIR|dir:///var/tmp/TmpDir.kLgXId] Repository already exists.
I believe the packages I download (cnijfilter-common-3.40-1.i386.rpm and cnijfilter-mp250series-3.40-1.i386.rpm) are fine--not corrupted.

I tried to install the ATI proprietary driver for an HD 5800 (Catalyst for Linux 64 bit, v. 10.8). The two main instruction sites are:
SDB:Configuring graphics cards - openSUSE
SDB:ATI drivers - openSUSE
I chose the hard way method. I downloaded the driver. Restarted SuSE 11.3 in mode 3. And as SU followed the method above, including adding the zypper programmes (which found some already installed and which installed a whole lot more). When I then attempted to run the install (sh ./atidriver-install-10.8-x86.x86_64.run) and selected automatic mode. It completed 82% and stalled attempting to install "Postprocessing Kernel Module".
I pressed control c to kill the process and attempted to re-install using the manual mode and then using the build mode. In both instances, same outcome. When I rebooted, and entered my password, the desktop did not load but sent me back to the username/password page. I can't get back in. Does not matter as I have backed up my docs.
I decided to install the proprietary driver because the colours on the desktop corrupt after the 2nd boot following a clean install. i.e. on the initial boot the colours are fine. Second, this is the 3rd effort I have made to install the driver after a clean install of SuSE 11.3 and there is no change in outcome. So, my question: anyone any suggestion what is going on and how I can install the driver successfully? Or, do I not understand the new regime in SuSE 11.3 and should I not attempt to install a new driver.

I have spent ages looking at similar problems but not not quite the same. I have installed 11.4/Gnome (x86) and wanted to use my GT430 card. I went here: 'http://en.opensuse.org/SDB:NVIDIA_drivers' and used the 'one click' install for current cards. All went ok until I rebooted and I got a 'gdm[1239]: WARNING: GdmDisplay: display lasted 0.846578 seconds' message. I got five of these in succession until the 'gdm[1239]: WARNING: GdmLocalDisplayFactory: maximum number of X display failures reached: check X server log for errors' appeared and it popped me down to an init 3 login.
So, I deleted the blacklisting conf file so that I could get back in to Gnome on Nouveau (which I did ok). I then noticed there was no /etc/X11 Xorg.conf file so I ran /usr/lib/nvidia-xconfig to generate one (which it did) - but it made no difference. I am at a loss know after spending 8 hours on this. Any pointers would be greatly appreciated. My machine is still at fresh install state so even if I have to reinstall 11.4 it does not matter.

I just changed my power settings so that my laptop would hibernate when I closed the lid... but now KDE Network Manager has decided that it will not allow itself to be enabled. I can get my ethernet connection working through YAST... but I *really* need the wireless to work as well... so can somebody *please* tell me why KNM is being so stupid, and how I can fix it? EDIT: I just realized that I should have put this in the Network subforum...

I have loaded Suse 10.3 on a system that has 4 Ethernet ports, all Intel chipsets. 2 ports have the 82571 chipset, 1 port has the 82573 chipset and the last one has the 82567. The 82567 chipset can use the e1000 driver and the 8257x chipsets require the e1000e driver. We are only actually using the 82571 ports.
When the system is booted, the 82567 seems to get bound to the e1000 driver and the 82573 gets bound to the e1000e driver. Doing an "lsmod" I see both drivers loaded. It appears the 82571 drivers are getting bound to the e1000 driver which is a major problem. They work for a while but eventually they lock up with enormous error counts according to "ifconfig". How I know the e1000 driver is bound to the 82571 ports is that when I remove it(modprobe -r e1000) and then try to use one of them, I get a "network unreachable". When e1000 is loaded these ports seem to work fine. I tried modding the file in /etc/sysconfig/hardware that corresponds to the PCI address of these ports(i.e., hwcfg-bus-pci-0000:08:00.0) to force the module to e1000e, but no luck there either.

I'm trying to integrate sendmail and openLDAP together. I've followed the guide in O'Reilly's LDAP book and my lookups are good. I think my problem is virtual users. What I'm trying to accomplish is that if an email is sent to joe@host.tld and there is an entry in LDAP for joe then it'll be accepted. Right now, it'll only accept emails only for system users. Below is my sendmail.mc (most comments removed)

I want to load the package madwifi under opensuse from Index of /suse/11.1, but RealPlayer did not function correctly. The reason why I want to use madwifi is that I cannot start my internet with opensuse 11.1 using motherboard from asus with the ethernet adapter from Atheros AR 8121/AR8113 PCI-E Version 1.0.0.5. When I compile the delivered Linux drivers I got the failure message "Makefile:61: Linux kernel source not found". So I decided to take rpm from opensuse within madwifi. How/Where can I get the corrosponding madwifi elsewhere?

I've just installed Opensuse 11.3 on m Dell Studio 15, and am having problems getting the wireless card to work. I've installed the proper driver (I think), using ndiswrapper, and have blacklisted the conflicting driver (called ssb) to the 50-blacklist.conf file in /etc/modprobe.d/. My problem is that the ssb driver is still appearing as an alternate driver when I use the command ndiswrapper -l in the terminal. Where do I go from here? Am I correct that the ssb driver is not blacklisted correctly?

I have bought a new Dell Studio XPS Desktop with Broadcom BCM57788 network card. The installation of the tg3 driver from Dell was done according to Documentation
But still, the network card is not there. When I call ifconfig, there is only "lo" and no "eth". In Yast it says that the Netlink BCM57788 card cannot be configured because the firmware is missing. I also already did modprobe tg3 and rmmod tg3.
BTW, I have installed OpenSuse 11.2 x32 which is Linux 2.6.31.5.

I have followed the Nvidia driver guide exactly. I did not see any errors during the four-step process. However, on the last reboot the system gets as far as the fedora "f" on the startup screen and hangs. This appears completely fatal. I have tried the procedure a couple of times now and the result has been to reinstall Fedora 14 from scratch each time. I have been able to access the system files after the crash using the system rescue option on the installation disk. I am on the Gnome X86_64 installation. My graphics card is NVIDIA GeForce GTS 240.

I'm having issues installing the nvidia-96 driver package on the new Lubuntu 11.04. I have a GeForce4ti 4200 card and have had that driver package install successfuly on numerous flavors of Ubuntu over the years.
apt-get spits out the following error:
Code: The following packages have unmet dependencies: nvidia-96 : Depends: xorg-video-abi-8.0 but it is not installable Depends: xserver-xorg-core (>= 2:1.8.99.905-1ubuntu3) but it is not going to be installed
Meanwhile, a check of the currently installed xserver-xorg-core through apt-cache shows:

The nouveau driver does work, but I would really like full 3d acceleration like I have had in the past.

I am attempting a Network installation of openSuse 11.3 on an old desktop which has IBM Boot Manager so that I can boot to one of three OSs, openSuse being the third. Sadly the installation of openSuse fails before the CD initial boot has finished. Looking at the text log of the starting process the problem appears to be a driver and the last line of text where it stalls refers to eata driver.
There are 4 hard drives in the machine, configured as two RAID 1 arrays driven by a DPT 2144W hardware raid card. (Very old but very good). If I Google eata I get a good deal on SCSI raid and DPT cards but I am out of my depth when they say a kernel module is needed.
Another concern is that the RAID arrays are configured using a bootable DOS configuration disk and once this is done they are recognized by other OSs such as eCS and OS/2. The arrays are just treated as single drives so these OS installations do not interfere with the card configuration. I am concerned because I cannot afford to lose the data on the drives but it appears the linux driver might want to rebuild the arrays.

I am a newbie to linux and having a hard time installing drivers for my card (gtx 260). I'm following this guide: [URL]. So do you edit the grub.conf file in etc first and then do the yum install kmod-nvidia? I've gone through this a few times, and each time when I think I've followed the steps and reboot, I get nothing. A blinking white cursor once and then a bunch of texts saying failure to mount and sleeping forever another time.

Had mythbuntu/xbmc running for 4 months with vdpau and all the same hardware. I killed it with an update and thought it'd all be easier To build it the 2nd time -- wrong! Fresh install of mythbuntu lucid off cd, Asus p5g43t-m pro, nvidia gforce 9500 gt
What I tried so far...Different drivers with the hardware app thingee. Multiple times -- Purge nvidia, purge nouveau, blacklist list of other video stuff with extra line after, stop gnome, manual install various drivers - 195.xxxxx or Synaptic install various drivers. Tried updates, adding avenard and daily build repos. Everything in combinations. Outcome remains consistant. Lo res error start, can't load nvidia driver, selected but not in use, xorg.conf needs editing.
I'm getting the same error messages as the common nvidia help posts describe but the solutions aren't working for me.
4 days of this, 3 installs plus a shot at Mint, and no progress. I'm pretty frustrated. I'd consider returning to karmic if I didn't think the updates would pork the nvidia driver all over again.
Last install of 9.10 there was a required edit of vmalloc=256M and a shut off of cx18. That's been fixed in lucid? What else ccould it be?
