Apr 3, 2011

I have a box which I want to make a Samba PDC opensuse 11.3 server, but it doesn't have monitor nor keyboard during normal use. After a standard installation with keyboard and screen, I will have to remove the screen and the keyboard for lake of space. Are there ways to monitor this linux server through my laptop so it act as the screen and the keyboard of the linux server? At any times, the laptop is running desktop opensuse 11.3 or windows XP.

I am trying to install the following software, but am finding it difficult to locate.

OpenSUSE Install :: 11.4 As VM Running On VMWare Server 1.0.10 Under WinXP

Aug 15, 2011

I am trying to install openSUSE 11.4 as a virtual machine running on VMWare Server V1.0. VMWare Server is running under WinXP 32bit.

I configured the VM with the following settings:

10GB disk
512 MB Ram

The installation starts from the DVD after inserting the disk. OpenSUSE setup appears, i do not touch the default resolution 800x600. Every thing is looking good. After setting the language, the installation process continues. Then a problem with the screen/resolution/graphical adapter appears. After a while I cannot read anything from the setup screen, everything is unreadable. I remember I had those problems already with 11.3 but I did not follow this issue an took openSUSE 11.1 instead. With 11.1 I could follow the installation instruction till the end and I got a running system.

General :: Install Fedora 14 On Netbook Using A Network PXE Server On Laptop?

Feb 20, 2011

I'm trying to install Fedora 14 on my netbook using a network PXE server on my laptop. I can see in the syslog, that initrd.img and vmlinuz get sent over tftp. The problem seems to be in my kernel parameters:

LABEL fedora14-EFI-boot-i386
kernel /images/fedora14-EFI-boot-i386/vmlinuz0
MENU LABEL fedora14-EFI-boot-i386
append initrd=/images/fedora14-EFI-boot-i386/initrd0.img ksdevice=bootif lang= kssendmac text ks=http://192.168.2.1/cblr/svc/op/ks/profile/fedora14-EFI-boot-i386 selinux=0
ipappend 2

On booting up the netbook it can't find a root device. I'm not sure what to specify for the root= because I have deleted all the partitions on /dev/sda. I did this because originally it kept booting up the old OS, and I assumed there was a way to format the disk as part of the install. I'm stuck now and was hoping someone with more experience of bootloaders might be able to help. If possible I'd like to do this using the network rather than a usb.

Fedora Installation :: Fc10 Cannot Access WINXP Through Network

May 28, 2009

I have a home network with 2 WINXP machines and one I am trying to load FC10 on. If I get FC10 to work, I will convert the others to FC10. I am trying to access the WINXP machines through my LAN. I have installed samba. I have gone through a lot of places to try to configure samba. Several places say I have to set the security level on the ethernet card using system-config-securitylevel. When I enter this in terminal, I get command not found. I checked with yum and it is installed. I have tried using the menus but cannot find it anywhere. I can see the FC workgroup from one of the WINXP machines but I cannot look into it. It says I don't have the right permissions. I would like to set it so I don't need a userid/password at all. Can I do this?

OpenSUSE Network :: Samba Config For DHCP Client Laptop?

Jan 11, 2010

I'll try not to be too wordy. Want to get my openSUSE 11.2 (fresh install) laptop to see my network shares ...not to be a server or share any files. I've looked at 50 websites and everything seems to be "server" and "share" oriented. Maybe I (newb) am confused by the terminology...

I have a router that provides DHCP. My LAN PC's consist of a Vista laptop, an XP DAW, and a Kubuntu file server. Somehow I got Kubuntu configured properly, all of the Windows machines can access it and vice-versa. The Kubuntu smb.conf does not work on this laptop, and it seems overkill -no shares needed here. And yes, I get DHCP and interweb on the laptop -posted this with it.

All I want is access to my (other) network drives from this (openSUSE 11.2) laptop. Not a server, not to share. This is easy... right? It's driving me nuts Is there a Samba configuration that will let me jump onto networks and surf Windows/Samba shares like any old Windoze box browsing Network Neighborhood? Do I have to be a Samba guru?

Networking :: Monitoring Home Network Usage

Jul 13, 2010

I was wondering how do you slap a packet analyzer like Wireshark somewhere between all the computers in a house and the router, so you can tell what websites are being accessed? I mean websites, specifically. I'm not trying to monitor bittorrent, IRC or other things yet - I'll get to that later. I just want to break this insanely complex task into smaller bites for now. Also, since my ISP has bandwidth caps but does not have a means for consumers to monitor total network usage, I'd like to figure out how to use Wireshark to do that as well. This, I am assuming, is easier when wireshark is running on the pipeline going into the router.

Networking :: Ubuntu 10.10 As A Dumb Hub For Network Monitoring

Apr 4, 2011

I am currently stationed overseas in Japan, and I am happy to say that I have a 100 Mbit fiber line from my service provider... I am not so happy to say that they force me to use their "CTU", which is basically a Japanese router, which limits me from receiving external connections (such as would be required to host FTP, or administer my home machines via SSH or VNC). I have tried many methods of bypassing this piece of equipment, but so far none have worked (router setup for PPPoE, DHCP, Static IP, so on). I don't think the Japanese would mind me bypassing this device, as it's really there to 'protect' me, but there's such a language barrier that I can't figure out how to tell them what I want to do.

In order to troubleshoot the problem, I would like to setup a spare computer as a hub, dumbly (Is that a word? It is for this circumstance...) passing data from one device to the other, and allowing me to watch what is being passed via Wireshark. I am pretty linux savvy, but I'm completely useless with iptables.

Here is the final product I want:

After connecting eth0 to the fiber modem and eth1 to the CTU, I want the computer to duplicate eth0's distant end MAC to eth1 and vice versa (to simulate the computer not being on the network at all), then I just want the computer to pass any data coming in on eth0 to eth1, and any data coming in on eth1 to eth0. Finally, I need to be able to read the throughput with Wireshark, but I really think that will be very simple if I can get the rest of the setup complete.

One piece of info - there is no dhcp on this link of the network, and I have no way of knowing the MAC addresses of either end before connecting them.

As an added bonus, once I've captured the handshake between the CTU and modem, if someone knows how to retransmit those packets on demand (i.e. to replace the CTU with my computer), I would be quite happy to hear about it.

OpenSUSE Network :: Router Configuration - Get Computer To Share Internet With Laptop

Dec 29, 2009

I've just spent the entire night trying to get my computer to share Internet with my laptop. I have DSL Internet with the modem configured to bridge mode. On the openSUSE server I have two NIC's. When setting up the DSL (pppoe) it created a dsl0 which is using the NIC eth0. So now I have dsl0, eth0, and eth1 I configured eth1 for DHCP server. When I connect with my laptop using DHCP it gets an IP address just fine. However I can't access the Internet. I think my problem is in the Kernel IP Routing Table. Here is the output from /sbin/route -n

[Code]...

dsl0 obtains IP from ISP eth0 is set to DHCP although that confuses me because how can the same NIC have two IP Addresses? eth1 static IP 10.30.60.1

I am currently using the built-in firewall to deny all traffic other than ICMP ping/pong and TCP traffic on those specific ports.I am looking for a graphical application which will let me monitor any connections being made to my server in order to keep an eye out for possible security concerns. To be more specific, I'd like to be able to see the source IP addresses, TCP/UDP ports, and individual bandwidth in use by external connections being made to the server, along with any other information that might be helpful in identifying a possible intrusion attempt.
