Fedora Installation :: Fc10 Cannot Access WINXP Through Network

May 28, 2009

I have a home network with 2 WINXP machines and one I am trying to load FC10 on. If I get FC10 to work, I will convert the others to FC10. I am trying to access the WINXP machines through my LAN. I have installed samba. I have gone through a lot of places to try to configure samba. Several places say I have to set the security level on the ethernet card using system-config-securitylevel. When I enter this in terminal, I get command not found. I checked with yum and it is installed. I have tried using the menus but cannot find it anywhere. I can see the FC workgroup from one of the WINXP machines but I cannot look into it. It says I don't have the right permissions. I would like to set it so I don't need a userid/password at all. Can I do this?

Fedora Installation :: Moving FC10 From SATA To PATA - Unable To Access Resume Device

Jan 26, 2010

I'm trying to move an existing FC10 install (created by someone else) from a 160GB WD1600AAJS SATA disk to a 160GB WD1600AAJB PATA disk (cursed trend of horizontally mounting SATA connectors at the end of the motherboard means the latest rev mobo doesn't fit in our enclosure!). I've used DD to copy the disk image from one to the other, but when attempting to boot, I get the following error:

Code:

Unable to access resume device (UUID=946f216f-0c24-4b02-a996-f42059970de7)
mount: error mounting /dev/root on /sysroot as ext3: no such file or directory

That particular UUID maps to sda2, which is the swap partition. Interestingly, both the SATA and PATA disk come up as /dev/sda on the motherboard. I kind of grok that the UUIDs are substitutes for directly naming the disks, and that they're referred to in fstab, initrd-2.6.27.12-170.2.5.fc10.i686.img, and in /dev/disk/by-* I'm guessing the problem is that the GUIDs (at least the one for swap) are no longer the same. How are they assigned to the partitions during boot?

I tried doing

Code:

swapoff -a
mkswap /dev/sda2
swapon -a

and put that new GUID in fstab and into initrd-* (using some steps I found elsewhere on how to gunzip/rezip it).At that point, I get a kernel panic on boot

Code:

Kernel panic - not syncing: CFS: Unable to mount root fs on unknown-block(0,0)

So I'm guessing that the other UUUDs have changed as well and I need to update them. How would I figure out what they are? I suppose I could change the references to /dev/sda*, but I didn't build this original image and I'm thinking whoever did had a good reason to go with UUIDs.

Fedora Installation :: FC10 Network Setup Repeatedly Overwritten?

Jan 21, 2009

Recent FC10 totally clean install. Fully updated using yum.

Using gui /system/administration/network I set up my DNS to the two IP addresses I've been given.

$service network restart

cat /etc/resolv.conf and the secondary DNS has changed to the IP address of my
gateway (router, at 192.168.2.x)

I.e. something is overwriting resolv.conf

Prior to this install, I'd been successfully using fixed IP on the 192.168.2.x range quite happily. Now it only works on DHCP and DNS seems to take an age.

Fedora Networking :: FC10 - Wifi Devices To Work On 128bit WEP Network - Linksys Wireless-G And 5100AGN

Jun 20, 2009

I'm having trouble getting my wifi devices to work on my 128bit WEP network. I have a new Thinkpad T400, with an internal Intel PRO/Wireless 5100 AGN. I also have some cardbus cards: a Lucent ORiNOCO Gold, a Linksys Wireless-G, and a TRENDnet TEW-421PC. I have them set up as interfaces eth2, eth1, and eth3. (The TRENDnet isn't recognised as a network card at all, so no interface for it.) I have installed the latest firmware for the Linksys card.

The /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-* files are virtually identical for all of them, differing only in the HWADDR and DEVICE lines. So here's the behaviour:

1. The Lucent card comes up just fine.
2. The internal 5100AGN and the Linksys cards won't come up, and watching with iwconfig shows that they're either associated with my AP OR they've got an encryption key set -- but not both.
3. When trying to bring up the 5100AGN, I get the following messages:

iwlagn: index 0 not used in uCode key table
iwlagn: index 3 not used in uCode key table

/var/log/messages shows DHCPDISCOVER requests being sent, but they're bound to fail since the association with the AP with WEP isn't being completed. And yes, the ifcfg-* files really *are* identical except for the DEVICE and HWADDR lines. The /etc/udev/rules.d/70-persistent-net.rules file correctly maps the interfaces to the MAC addresses. So why does my antique ORiNOCO card work and thew newer ones fail? How can I track down what's being done wrong/not being done?

Installation :: FC10 - Volume Group "VOLGroup00" Not Found - Unable To Access Resume Device

Feb 2, 2009

I already know "what" my problem is, however I am having difficulty fixing it. I recently upgraded our companies server to a HP ML150; decided to upgrade to FC10 hoping it would go smooth and it is not. It does not detect the SATA drives after the installation.

I get.

"Volume Group "VOLGroup00" not found
Unable to access resume device (/dev/VolGroup00/LogVol01
mount: error mounting /dev/root on /sysroot as ext3: No such file or directory

I know the problem is that my SATA is not enabled in the kernel or grub, but I don't know how to fix this. My internet searches are coming up a little short and LIVE discs are not working so I am having trouble figuring this out.

Ubuntu Installation :: Dual Boot Remix With WinXP Now WinXP BSOD On Boot?

Sep 12, 2010

I just installed Ubuntu Remix 10.04 on my wifes MSI U100 netbook. I did a dual boot just in case she had to get into Windows for something. I let the install automatically partion (did the side by side option). Anyway, Ubuntu works fine and imported all her documents and stuff. Problem is Windows XP won't boot. The first time I tried to boot Windows XP I got a message saying the hardware had changed and I had to select safe mode, normal boot, last known good, etc... I booted normally. I got the splash screen followed by a quick flash of BSOD and a reboot. I does this no matter how I try to boot Windows (safe, command prompt, etc). Anyone have any idea what the problem is?

Fedora Installation :: FC10 On ESATA Drive Won't Start?

Mar 5, 2009

I am new to Fedora 10 and encountered the following problem. I installed FC10 on an external eSATA hard drive (sdb) on my laptop which already has some other Linux distros on sda. I used a DVD that came with the Fedora 10 Bible, so I can assume that the DVD had no problems. The installation went OK and I got no error messages. I added the following lines to the menu.lst file of the distro that I use to boot all my distros.

title Fedora 10
root (hd1,1)
kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.27.15-170.2.24.fc10.i686 ro root=/dev/sdb2 rhgb quiet
initrd /boot/initrd-2.6.27.15-170.2.24.fc10.i686.img

When I boot Fedora, the blue bar at the bottom of the screen goes half-way, then gives me the error message: "mount: could not find filesystem '/dev/root' "

Fedora Installation :: FC10 I386 - How Many CDs - Of 6 - Required For Min. Install

I would like to try out fc10 on an old, k6-2 pc. Last night I tried to download the dvd, but firefox 'completed' the download with only 1.2/~3xg, and of course it didn't work.

I am trying a test net installation in VirtualBox, so far so good.

However, I would rather have a more complete installation on hand and I'm looking at the full install cd's --there are 6 of them.

Are all 6 required for a minimal install, or could I get by with one (or two, etc)? For example, with debian installation cds you can use just the first one -- the rest are just a complete set of packages for everything +kitchen sink.

Is it possible to reinstall WinXP without breaking the system - becoz AFAIK, installing will remove grub from the superblock and then there will be no way to reload fedora even if it is still there. Can't I copy grub and the partition table away and reinstall it from windows after the intallation completes? That way I shall have my dual boot system back as usual if I didnot do any changes to the partition table during the fresh windows installation.

Fedora Installation :: Installing F15 DVD - Repositories Require Network Access

I've tried to install FEdora 15 using the Fedora 15 DVD for i686 architecture. However, after the step where I chose the setup for GRUB boot options, I got this error: "Some of your repositories require network access but networking could not be setup" (or something similar). Then I only had the option to exit the installer, but after reboot there was no GRUB and I have no means even to boot back to Windows.

How to install Fedora without networking or is Fedora the only distro so messed up that this can't be done? I've tried the Live CD/USB version but that version has no C compiler to allow me to install networking drivers after install completes. Now I was told to try the full DVD, by the full DVD managed to mess up my computer completely.
