View 3 RepliesI have a wireless card that needs the Broadcom B4311 Rev. 1 driver but I don't have a way to download that driver since I don't have wireless access since the driver isn't installed. I'm running Linux Mint Debian x64.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have had a heck of a time trying to get my laptop running ubuntu to connect to my home network. I have managed to get it to work at my university which would seemingly be more difficult than getting it to work at home, so I know for a fact it isn't a hardware or driver issue. If I try to connect via ethernet cable from my router, it detects that I connected the cable but says "disconnected" and never lets me connect. If I SKIP the router and go from my modem directly to my laptop via ethernet cable it works great.
Using the wireless network tool I can see all of the wireless connections in my area. When I go to connect to my network it prompts me for the WEP key and when I enter it and hit connect it just keeps cycling and eventually times out and finally again prompts me for my WEP key. I know this network works as it works just fine on my Windows 7 partition. Another interesting note - both my wireless and ethernet connections both worked flawlessly and stoopid easily on the live cd but don't after the full install.
If I manually enter in the information for my wireless through IPv4 settings and enter in the Address,Netmask and gateway I can connect to my network - but then I have no active internet connection. Same deal with my wired connection. Is this because choosing this manual method grays out the DHCP?
I am trying to connect to the college campus wifi network, but having difficulties in Linux.I am dual-booting Windows 7 and Ubuntu 10.10, and I use Google Chrome web browser on both. When I boot into Windows, my laptop connects to the network (as I can see from the taskbar icon) and I can (and currently am) connect in Chrome. However, in Ubuntu, it connects (or so the icon indicates) but Chrome doesn't load any pages. The campus network is unsecured, but once you open the browser, you are prompted with a log-in page (student ID and password) to actually connect. Here is my output for iwconfig:
Code:
wlan0 IEEE 802.11bgn ESSID:"sjsu_campus"

if i'm connected to my wireless network it only gives me internet acces for a few minutes. The connection with my network stays but i have to close it back of and reconnect before i get back online.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to setup a wireless AP with my old asus eeepc, so it can act as a repeater to connect my android device on the other end of the apartment. I've already created the Wireless Access Point using hostapd. It took very little configuring, just changed from mode 'a' to 'g' and changed the channel from 60 to 1 and It was all set. Next I setup a dhcp server. Also simple enough using yast.
Up to this point, I was able to connect my android device to the newly created wireless network. However It doesn't have internet access. I guess I have to configure iptables for this, but I find it incredibly confusing! Here are a few specs to help with any examples: The laptop is connected to the internet through eth0 with IP 192.168.2.120 Hostapd is using wlan0, and I'm pretty sure it created mon.wlan0 So, to sum up, when I connect my android device to the network I can, for instance, see what ever pages apache is currently serving on the laptop, but can't access the internet.
Just today I installed opensuse 11.3 on my Compaq CQ61. Even though I am able to connect to networks (both with an ethernet cable and wireless) I don't have internet access. I have used opensuse for a very brief period in the past and I had no such problem.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have recently installed Ubuntu lucid lynx and at my old house I had a regular cable modem (no wifi) and never used wireless internet. I would simply unplug the ethernet from the windows desktop plug it to my laptop and I was good 2 go.have recently moved and my roommate has a cable modem w/ wifi capabilities. When I plug in I am told that I am connected but......Nothing. dont know if the problem is due to the modem having wireless capabilities when my old one did not or the fact that my roommate has a win7 laptop that is connected via wifi etc. There have been a FEW times that I have walked out plugged in and everything has ran well. when I do plug in I look under connection information and I am told that I am connected at 100Mbps but whenever I try to visit a page I am out of luck. I define newbie (as far as Linux distros) and I have tried everything including going to work w/no sleep because I'm going through massive trial & errors
View 10 Replies View RelatedI have been using Telstra Bigpond Wireless Broadband USB Internet for about 12 months on my Laptop with Windows Vista Operating System.
I also have an Eee PC Notebook (Linux Operating System)that previously connected to the Internet via Desktop Wireless Modem.
The problem I have now is trying to connect to the internet on my Linux Notebook using Telstra Bigpond Wireless Broadband USB.
I have phoned Telstra Technical Assistance and the told me they cannot help me because the Operating System is Linux.
I have installed Mint 8 on my HP Presario lap top. When booted up using XP I can connect to the internet wirelessly with no problem. But, when I boot up with Mint 8 I receive a msg that there is no connection to the internet. I then tried by hooking up to the router with a cable and it still shows "not connected to the internet" msg. I tried rebooting while hooked up with the cable and same result.

The problem in my opinion is that the wireless device I use isn't operating. No light comes on the device. I am not sure how to "find hardware" with Ubuntu.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI got a development machine with Apache installed. Everything was configured correctly, machine was running perfectly for some time, but today, suddenly I lost connection to my Wireless network.
Now I simply...can't access it. All details are correct, I even turned off MAC Addresses validation to make sure it's not my AP configuration fault. Nothing helped.
Any ideas what could happen? I did not update any libraries/packages. Just got disconnected from my network and cannot access it anymore.
To give more informations: I'm using Broadcom wireless device and b43 driver but I don't think this can be an error. Logs tell me nothing.
I have my desktop and laptop connected using an "Cross Over Cable" to transfer files. Each PC also has a wireless card which is used to connect to the internet. Today, the card in the desktop went bad, so I want to access the internet from my desktop through my laptop. Here is the specs running Ubuntu 9.10
****DESKTOP****

I have a Belkin Wireless G USB Network Adapter but I cant get on the internet with it.The laptop is running Damn Small Linux.Heres what is going on and the code I typed:
ndiswrapper -i rt73.INF
ndiswrapper -l
modprobe ndiswrapper
iwconfig
ndiswrapper says the driver and hardware are present but iwconfig and ifconfig don't say anything. The wireless adapter works fine in windows 2000 and windows xp with the same driver. The green LED on the wireless adapter never flashes like it is supposed to.
I installed 11.3amd64 as a VM under Vista/VMWare Player - all worked fine. I have now installed it as a physical system. It nstalled cleanly BUT during first boot it could not access the repos. With each repo it gave the message
- download (curl) error for (repo)
- error code connection failed
- error message could not resolve host (repo)
This was followed by a message box containing
- UI syntax error
- no widget with ID 'contents
Firefox could not access the internet (cannot find server) until I disabled IPV6 (I used about:config), now it works fine. I think the repos problem is because of IPV6 - I usually have trouble with IPV6. I tried disabling IPV6 with the following (How To Disable ipv6 on SuSE Linux | Linux Poison)

To start off I do not have the ability to post in the Networking/Wireless thread. I attend DeVry university and in my school they recently rolled out "Bluesocket." Now that they have done this I am not able to access the internet utilizing my ubuntu laptop.I am able to connect to the network. When I open my web browser I am redirected to the "bluesocket" login page where I am able to successfully log in. The next step to accessing DeVry's internet service is to allow Bluesocket to do a scan using a Java applet. That scan is successful.
The results of the scan inform me that I am not being allowed to access the network resources because I don't have an antivirus or firewall program installed on my computer. I do not wish to have an antivirus or firewall program installed on my laptop to utilize DeVry's network resources. My question is what steps do I need to take to bypass/trick bluesocket?
I have a linux box (fedora) with two ethernet cards eth1 and eth2. On eth1 I successfully configured a PPPOE internet connection. Such that from the server I can browse the internet. On eth2 I wired it to a wireless router essentially to provide the wireless cloud. On eth2 I also configured dhcp, such that the Linux box is both PPPOE and DHCP server. However my clients on the LAN cannot access the Internet.
On passing the routing command I get
Destination Gateway Iface
196.44.x.y 0.0.0.0 ppp0
192.168.1.0 0.0.0.0 eth2 (my subnet)
0.0.0.0 0.0.0.0 ppp0.
The router (functioning as a wireless access point mainly) has a fixed IP address of 192.168.1.2 and eth2 has IP address 192.168.1.1. The dhcp file running on Linux has been set with option router (Gateway) 192.168.1.1. I cannot figure out how to correctly set the routing table such that my clients on wireless can access the internet cloud. I googled and googled but no solid solution. Any suggestions?
On Opensuse 11.2, I would like to connect my ipod touch to a wireless ad-hoc network of my laptop. I have no wireless WIFI-router at home, so I have to use the laptop as a router to the internet. I know I have to enter a static IP adres and my router's address, but where ? I haven't found any place under network tools to do this, only saw some fields with SSID's and MAC addresses to fill in.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI'm try to setup a wireless network with my linksys wireless router and my HP laptop dual booting Vista & Suse 11.2. I have the vista networked, just fine. Where I can share files and the printer connected to my desktop. But I want to be able to use Suse in the same way, full time and to stray away from Vista. My wife and kids like easy. View 9 Replies View RelatedI have a Centos5.4 64bit laptop, having an eth0 and a wlan0. I connect this wired eth0 to a wall socket to access Internet via DHCP (eg the assigned address is like 192.168.192.xx). I do not have access to the ADSL router. How can I turn this laptop into a Wifi access point to allow, say my Ipad or any wireless-only client, to access the Internet thru this laptop ?
That is, communication between iPad to laptop is wifi(ad-hoc connection ??), laptop to the ADSL router is wired LAN. The laptop need to have some bridging build in ? If you can refer me some concepts, then I can follow up from there.
Or better yet, has anybody does this before ?
I have a desktop computer running OpenSUSE 11.2 with two network cards installed. I would like to use both cards for connecting to the internet using different networks. The setting would be the following: eth0 is the main (default) card, almost all programs should use this NIC for connecting to the internet. eth1 is used only by a few programs, which have setting for selecting which network interface to use. The two NIC's are connected to different networks, so the IP address of the NIC's, the related subnet masks and gateways are also different.
Saying short, I would like to have the two NIC's as they would be in two separate computers. I can set the IP address and subnet mask of the NIC's. The main problem is that I can only declare one gateway. How can i setup this? I do not use network manager, I configure network cards using yast, but if needed I can of course use ifconfig directly.
I'm having a strange problem with my network connection/DNS. I turn computer the on and it recognizes and connects to wireless or wired but I can't access any Internet resources or my router. If I ping the default gateway, I get no response and I get DNS errors from any network services that run at start up. If I stop and start the network daemon then it all works fine until the next time I turn on my laptop. It does this for both wireless and wired connection.
I've tried to edit the network interface information in YaST but it says that configuration is handled by knetworkmanager and I have no idea where that information is accessed. I should point out that it all worked fine until I tried to connect to open WAP at my school and couldn't so I connected to the wired network. Next morning I had this problem when connecting to my home network. My questions are 1. What could be the cause of this error and 2. where does one configure the network interfaces when using knetworkmanager
I have Debian installed on my laptop. When the laptop is connected to the network via ethernet cord, I can ssh into it fine. However if I switch to wireless, I can no longer SSH in.
I have confirmed SSHD is running.
I am switching between wired/wireless by editing /etc/network/interfaces and re-booting the laptop.
The laptop can connect to the internet, and SSH into other computers on the LAN just fine with either connection. But they can't connect to it when it's wireless.
When it's wireless, the laptop can SSH into itself as well.
My iptables is set to allow everything.
They're both on the same subnet.
I have an old laptop with wireless, 2 desktop computers without wireless and an Allied Telesyn gigabit ethernet switch (specifically AT-GS908GB). Is it possible to hook the 3 computers into the switch and use the laptop's wireless as the internet source for the other 2?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI am completely new to linux in any flavour. I installed ubuntu 10.4.1 64-bit on my Gateway NV59 laptop as a dual boot with Windows 7. The installation went just fine. When it comes to networking, I can connect to my home network when wired directly, wireless is another matter. I can connect wireless in windows just fine, so the card is physically fine.
My set up is as follows:
Gateway NV59 laptop with Atheros AR928X PCI-E wireless adapter
Linksys WRT54G router using WPA2 Personal and a class C address scheme (192.168.x.x)
(If anyone thinks it would be necessary to post actual hardware specs of the laptop, I can, but don't think it really necessary). I have followed the Wifi Wireless Troubleshooting Guide found at [URL].
When connecting to my network wirelessly, I click the icon in the top right, and choose "Create New Wireless Network". When I input my settings (SSID - not broadcast, and security type and key - WPA), it then states I am connected under the "Wireless Networks" section found in that menu, and shows my network name with a strong signal and a computer/monitor icon. When I double-click the icon, it tells me I am connected and that the connection is active, yet the actual wireless icon on the top bar is grey, not white, and has a red exclamation mark on it. According to the steps in the troubleshooting guide, my wireless card is recognized and installed, with a driver of ath9k.
When I run lsmod, the driver is listed, therefore loaded, and ndiswrapper is NOT listed. I have verified that the driver is communicating with the kernel. When I scan for my router, it is listed under Cell 04, with the correct SSID and hardware address. There do not appear to be multiple drivers loaded, and my wifi is NOT disabled. When I check to see if I'm associated with a router, iwconfig shows my network ssid under wlan0, with the correct hardware address listed under Cell:, yet I cannot ping my router's internal ip address. At this point, I ran ifconfig, and for some reason, my wireless card has been given a class A address of 10.42.43.1.
When I try to assign an ip address via dhcp, DHCPDISCOVER runs for a number of intervals and then tells me "No DHCPOFFERS received", yet my router is using dhcp to assign ips with a pool of 50, more than enough ips for all the hardware in my network. When I run the command "sudo invoke-rc.d networking restart", I get the statement "Ignoring unknown interface wlan0=wlan0" - not sure what that means, but doesn't sound good to me, and retrying to accquire an ip address through dhcp still does not work. If I attempt to assign an ip address within my network range manually, I first run the command "sudo ifconfig wlan0 down", then just out of curiosity to see if the interface is really down.
I run ifconfig again, and wlan0 is no longer listed, but now there is eth0 (my regular ethernet interface) with no ip address. AND another interface is listed - eth0:avahi with the same hardware address as eth0, and an address of 169.254.4.42 - this seems to be the default address the OS will assign when it cannot get one via dhcp, but I have no idea why it has shown up as eth0::avahi... Anyway, after entering the command "sudo ifconfig ip addr 192.168.x.x netmask 255.255.255.0 broadcast 192.168.x.255 up" with the appropriate addresses, I receive the error "addr: Unknown host".
What I have NOT tried, are the following steps:
1. Change my router to an open signal (I would prefer not to do this, but will, if it is absolutely necessary for troubleshooting)
2. Try gtk wifi, or wifi radar
3. Try booting with kernel option pci=noacpi or acpi=off (not entirely sure how to do this just yet)
4. Try wpa supplicant (not sure what this is, just noted it was in the troubleshooting guide)
I'm having trouble setting up my desktop pc to access the internet via my wireless router. i have tried to set it up in networkmanager (it shows as connected when clicking on the NM icon) but when loading firefox or when trying to update opensuse i just cannot get a connection.

I'm trying to install Fedora 14 on my netbook using a network PXE server on my laptop. I can see in the syslog, that initrd.img and vmlinuz get sent over tftp. The problem seems to be in my kernel parameters:
LABEL fedora14-EFI-boot-i386
kernel /images/fedora14-EFI-boot-i386/vmlinuz0
MENU LABEL fedora14-EFI-boot-i386
append initrd=/images/fedora14-EFI-boot-i386/initrd0.img ksdevice=bootif lang= kssendmac text ks=http://192.168.2.1/cblr/svc/op/ks/profile/fedora14-EFI-boot-i386 selinux=0
ipappend 2
On booting up the netbook it can't find a root device. I'm not sure what to specify for the root= because I have deleted all the partitions on /dev/sda. I did this because originally it kept booting up the old OS, and I assumed there was a way to format the disk as part of the install. I'm stuck now and was hoping someone with more experience of bootloaders might be able to help. If possible I'd like to do this using the network rather than a usb.
I'm all new to Opensuse, but I've used Ubuntu before, I am having some issues with my wireless on Opensuse, the laptop is connected and the WEP key is correct and in the system information it says I'm online! However the internet does not work, I know the internet is online as my main Desktop Pc (Running Windows 7 64bit) which I'm typing this on, is connected to the internet!
