Playing videos in ....., etc, is not working. The sound will play for around 30 seconds and then stop. The video will keep playing. I have installed Opera and Google Chrome and the same thing happens in those browsers as well. I have the latest flash plugin installed.when I switch to another user account on the same computer, the video plays just fine, with sound, all the way through.

It reloads alsa, and I can listen to a song again for approx 50 seconds. It is not depended of rhythmbox, because the same problem occures for amarock and banshee. I already installed the package libesd-alsa0 and put esd on, but the problem still occures. What is happening? I wanted to add 1 thing. And that is that I ahve 2 sound devices installed, both supporting alsa. 1 onboard, 1 pci card.
The strange thing is that only from the pci card, I can hear sound out of the speakers (after replugging the jack in the back off course ). But if, after an alsa force-reload, only the onboard sound card is detected, it does play the whole song, but does not output any sound.
I'm using OpenSUSe 11.3 and have problems: While moving windows or doing anything else, music gets faster, jumps forward or to interrupt.
All worked fine in 11.1 and almost fine in 11.2.

starting vlc gives only 3 seconds sounds, then quits. Message from system: linuxbox kernel: [ 786.386363] ALSA clock.c:233: current rate 0 is different from the runtime rate 44100 All other players like Smplayer
Playing a song works at first; then it quits after 1-5 minutes. If you select a different output device, it will work for another 1-5 minutes, but switching back to an already used up device will not play sound. Running 'sudo killall pulseaudio' resets everything and each output device works for another 1-5 minutes. This is on on 9.10.

First off, I'll come clean and admit that I am still relatively green to Linux, but I'm not afraid to tackle the complex. I have a few stroke-inducing issues that I haven't been able to resolve as a usually do by eye-grepping Google and the various forums. Of course, I'm running Ubuntu 11.04 with Unity - which is fairly new and undiscovered country.
I've got this no-name brand, sample laptop from a manufacturing partner of ours out of Shenzhen China. It's rocking a Core i3 M350 with an nVidia GT 330M (discreet-ish?)& apparently some flavor of Intel integrated graphics.
Now, there are so many variables at play, I'm not quite sure where to begin - so please bear with this post a bit longer as I unravel the details. Loading the nVidia drivers (both proprietary and the experimental open varieties) results in Unity no longer working and dumping me back to the classic Ubuntu desktop. I believe it has something to do with the fact that I have no ability to disable the integrated graphics through the BIOS and Ubuntu has set its hopes and dreams upon using Intel graphics for the rest of all time.
That said, running without the nVidia graphics drivers, I am able to use Unity and it runs pretty well.The only caveat being that on occasion (read: intermittently), when the laptop wakes up from suspend/hibernate mode, playing Flash video in full screen gets choppy (stutters). Restarting Ubuntu resolves the issue. I suppose I should verify that I am using Firefox 4.
In addition, there are times that the WiFi adapter will not wake, and using the keyboard function key to power cycle it ceases to function. A complete shutdown is required to address this one. i.e. Restarting and warm-booting does not fix it.
Did I mention Skype is a terd? I don't actually expect a fix for this pile of hot mess - just thought it might make someone laugh. If there is anyone here that could lend me a hand with any or all of these issues, not only will you have the satisfaction of knowing that you are one bad Mambajamba (TM), but I'll buy you a drink or something via Dwolla or bitcoin.

When I'm running a flash site like, Pandora, it stops working when I open another tab with flash running like, Hulu. Now it doesn't stop working right away but in time it does.
Then screen on that tab usually goes grey.

I have a problem that I don't even understand. I have not used linux much, and I am trying to move my small bussines from ms to linux.I started with my first machine, and Ubuntu 10.4. I must say that everything started smoothly. zero problem. I have installed wine and make the tests for our bussiness program, and even printing was almost flawless (must make a small change somewhere because it start printing a little lower than windows and I have preformated receips)So.. it all started when I wanted to use skype. skype installed also without problem, and it seemed to start ok, I make the first call, and after a couple of seconds, no more mic or sound. I thought it was skype, but it seems not.
what I have, is a VT1708 VIA, Onboard sound card.I followed one of the guides in the forum, to see if all is installed and seems to work... and it is. it seems all fine. Even more, I installed the ALSA mixer, and when I enable the mic from there, it works.But, when I open the sound prefferences, the sound card appears in Hardware and Input, when I open it, but some seconds after, it dissapears. Still working from the ALSA thou.... In conclusion, I can not use skype or similar. and the sound dissapears from the system, even if I can use it form the ALSA mixer.... I can't change the other computers to linux unless I prove to the people here that everything is working 100%.... and belive me... today skype phone is a must... in the bussiness.
I recently installed Ubuntu 10.10 AMD64 beta. After installing the flash player, everything worked fine. I installed a few updates, as well as Ubuntu Stuido from the synaptic package manager, and when I rebooted, I can't hear any sound from flash content displayed in Fire Fox. I am running Ubuntu 9.10 on an HP dc5100MT workstation. Sound works nearly all the time, but once in a while, the sound stops and I have no idea why. The channel is not muted, the volume is 100%, and not even rebooting fixes it. It will just start working on its own.Under the Sound Preferences panel, the output volume is 100%. But there's only one key problem -- sound playback.
When I'm playing an mp3 file in rhythmbox, or any other player, it'll skip when I maximize or minimize windows, or do anything that really uses resources.
And on top of that, if I just let it keep going, it'll eventually just stop playing the song, and the progress bar will jump forward and do the same for other songs, not even playing them.

I've deduced that it's probably a sound driver thing. I've downloaded the driver for my card, but I the directions tell me to install it in
/usr/src/linux/driver/sound
My problem is this: when I suspend, sound disappears, and I have to reboot to get it back, which is, needless to say, rather annoying. I'm using Ubuntu 11.04, with a low-latency kernel.
I have three sound cards:
1) Delta 1010LT, which uses snd_ice1712
2) Sound Blaster Audigy 2, which uses snd_emu10k1
3) Some on-board Realtek thingy, which I guess uses snd_hda_codec_realtek
I use jack on the Delta1010LT, and I run pulseaudio through jack.

1. while playing any video file in VLC or any other player, i try to fullscreen or back to normal then the VLC just stopped for 5-7 seconds, video is running but in the screen it does not show running just sound comes.
2. while i open firefox or maximize it from clicking on taskbar, it take time similar thing the nautilus do when its going to maximize.

Is there any logfile or way to see why the script is killed or what stops the recording? When executing the script manually the recording runs just fine until I kill the process.
I know this is the kind of vague post that people hate. But I'm having a problem. Every now and then (several times a day), my computer stops responding for several seconds.
I notice it most in Firefox. If I'm typing information in a form (like this one) on a web page, everything just stops. If I keep typing, the text eventually appears, apparently having been stored in a keyboard buffer.
But it's not just in Firefox. I have had the same problem in OpenOffice applications. Things just stop. The computer apears to "think" for several seconds, and then things continue.
After several seconds, everything is okay. So some people may say that this is normal. And while I'm no guru, I have been around computers for a long time, so I remember back in the day when this happened all the time. But I haven't seen it (at least to this extent) in previous versions of Ubuntu (or in Windows).
It's a serious problem.
what I should look at? I have a feeling that there is some setting somewhere (cache, etc.) that is set wrong.
On my Acer laptop, I have Ubuntu 8.04.4 LTS and a static version of the Skype Beta 2.1, specifically version 2.1.0.81. I recently made the upgrade to it from an earlier version because I needed to have the screensharing feature to work. Previously Screensharing from others was showing up in a tiny window I couldn't resize. But the Skype Beta 2.1 works fine regarding screensharing.
But the problem I'm having now is that the sound intermittently goes away, but only for Skype. It seems to go away if I walk away from my laptop for a long time. When this occurs, I cannot hear or record sound through Skype, but it works fine through other applications. If I shut Skype back down once it is in this failed state, and come back in, then it remains in this failed state. The only resolution is a reboot, and then it's fine again.
The only thing I can think might be the issue is the Gnome Power Manager, perhaps? I mean, my fan on my laptop spins down if I walk away for a long time, so I know some kind of laptop power management is engaging.

And it suggested removing PulseAudio and using esound instead. Well, I tried that and rebooted, and my desktop wouldn't boot properly. So, I did CTRL+ALT+F2, logged in, and then did "sudo apt-get update; sudo apt-get install ubuntu-desktop". All was well again, but unfortunately it brought back PulseAudio again.
As the title implies, the sound on my rig stops working after a while. Annoying as hell: I have to reboot my machine to get it to work again, which means that I have to reset my entire programming environment (with five full workspaces). I'm running 9.10 Karmic.

I boot up Ubuntu 10.04 just fine. The mouse works, but after about 2 seconds or so, it stops moving. Of course, the keyboard keeps working fine. It's like Ubuntu stops getting the signals that the mouse is moving. The mouse is in fine working condition. It works fine on my Windows partition. The mouse just had fresh batteries installed, and the laser light doesn't turn off.
I did just remove an ATI card and go back to my GeForce 8200 onboard graphics card. So I thought it might be a wierd driver problem, so I managed to remove the NVIDIA drivers. Didn't help at all. I also was able to log into a console and update the OS. No help there either. I did try to boot my 10.04 live cd, but my computer hates live cd's for some reason. It wouldn't boot, and I can't remember what I did to make it work when I installed Ubuntu.
I have a problem with my wlan connection. it works for few seconds, then stops for few seconds and then starts again (without interaction from my side). I run Ubuntu 10.4 Lucid. The issue started few days ago. Using ethernet, there is no problem. The problem does not exist with other computers i have, there wifi and internet work continuously and flawless. I ping my wlan router. one sees that connection to the wlan router starts and stops every few seconds... (of course, internet connection then behaves analogous)

I am trying to install 11.2 but it keeps freezing. I press install and the Linux kernal loads and afterwards I get a black screen and after 30 seconds the DVD player stops running. I have also tried to the online network install and the exact same thing happens. I also tried a DVD I have of 11.1 which I know is good since I have successfully installed it on other machines and the result is also the same. My computer currently has a dual boot of XP and Kubuntu 9.10.
I am returning to Suse after experimenting with Kubuntu but thought I would leave the Kubuntu on the machine (prefer Suse but Kubuntu installed very easily on my computer). Could the Kubuntu be causing this problem or is the difficulty something else? I have also tried the safe install and the other options to no success.

I'm having some troubles with my soundcards. I have a Audigy ES PCI soundcard and I just recently bought an M-Audio Audiophile 24/96 soundcard and at the moment I have both of them installed. I'm dual booting w/ Windows xp and I need the Audigy in Windows for gaming and because of the mic input that the M-Audio doesn't have.
First when I installed the M-Audio only Amarok (and probably other 'Phonon' apps) worked but I had no sound in mplayer, xine etc. With some googling I found a way to make the M-Audio card the primary card for Alsa and now mplayer & xine work fine too. M-audio 24/96 uses the module ice1712.Today I noticed I don't have sound in flash player (I use opera, but tried firefox too), and the (alsa?) command aplay won't play any .wavs. Flash sounds used to work okay with only the Audigy installed. I updated flashplugin-nonfree to 10.2 today and now there is no sound in Chromium when playing e.g. ..... videos. The sound does work in Opera on the same videos. Aboutlugins shows "Shockwave Flash 10.2 r152" in both browsers.
