I want to use a cronjob to start a script running streamripper to record radioshows when I'm not at home. I'm running 10.04 server 32 bit.
I've setup a cronjob via Webmin to start the recording. It runs the following script:

Is there any logfile or way to see why the script is killed or what stops the recording? When executing the script manually the recording runs just fine until I kill the process.
1. while playing any video file in VLC or any other player, i try to fullscreen or back to normal then the VLC just stopped for 5-7 seconds, video is running but in the screen it does not show running just sound comes.
2. while i open firefox or maximize it from clicking on taskbar, it take time similar thing the nautilus do when its going to maximize.
i don't know what the problem is, sometimes i feel it is because of compiz and emerald effact, but when i was ubuntu8.10 user, there was not such problem, it runs smooth.
I know this is the kind of vague post that people hate. But I'm having a problem. Every now and then (several times a day), my computer stops responding for several seconds.
I notice it most in Firefox. If I'm typing information in a form (like this one) on a web page, everything just stops. If I keep typing, the text eventually appears, apparently having been stored in a keyboard buffer.
But it's not just in Firefox. I have had the same problem in OpenOffice applications. Things just stop. The computer apears to "think" for several seconds, and then things continue.
After several seconds, everything is okay. So some people may say that this is normal. And while I'm no guru, I have been around computers for a long time, so I remember back in the day when this happened all the time. But I haven't seen it (at least to this extent) in previous versions of Ubuntu (or in Windows).
It's a serious problem.
what I should look at? I have a feeling that there is some setting somewhere (cache, etc.) that is set wrong.

Internet connection has been very unstable on my system latley. Think it was because of last update.
Basically for example i watch a video on ..... and it never fully loads. Even when i browse pages dont fully load and i must wait a few seconds before i press reload.
I am connected through cable. Network is working fine on other OS
I boot up Ubuntu 10.04 just fine. The mouse works, but after about 2 seconds or so, it stops moving. Of course, the keyboard keeps working fine. It's like Ubuntu stops getting the signals that the mouse is moving. The mouse is in fine working condition. It works fine on my Windows partition. The mouse just had fresh batteries installed, and the laser light doesn't turn off.
I did just remove an ATI card and go back to my GeForce 8200 onboard graphics card. So I thought it might be a wierd driver problem, so I managed to remove the NVIDIA drivers. Didn't help at all. I also was able to log into a console and update the OS. No help there either. I did try to boot my 10.04 live cd, but my computer hates live cd's for some reason. It wouldn't boot, and I can't remember what I did to make it work when I installed Ubuntu.
Playing videos in ....., etc, is not working. The sound will play for around 30 seconds and then stop. The video will keep playing. I have installed Opera and Google Chrome and the same thing happens in those browsers as well. I have the latest flash plugin installed.when I switch to another user account on the same computer, the video plays just fine, with sound, all the way through.
I have a problem with my wlan connection. it works for few seconds, then stops for few seconds and then starts again (without interaction from my side). I run Ubuntu 10.4 Lucid. The issue started few days ago. Using ethernet, there is no problem. The problem does not exist with other computers i have, there wifi and internet work continuously and flawless. I ping my wlan router. one sees that connection to the wlan router starts and stops every few seconds... (of course, internet connection then behaves analogous)

I have a fresh debian install on my computer, and I have this weird problem. When I play a song from rhythmbox, it works for 10 to 50 seconds, and then it stops making sound. When I type
alsa force-reload
It reloads alsa, and I can listen to a song again for approx 50 seconds. It is not depended of rhythmbox, because the same problem occures for amarock and banshee. I already installed the package libesd-alsa0 and put esd on, but the problem still occures. What is happening? I wanted to add 1 thing. And that is that I ahve 2 sound devices installed, both supporting alsa. 1 onboard, 1 pci card.
The strange thing is that only from the pci card, I can hear sound out of the speakers (after replugging the jack in the back off course ). But if, after an alsa force-reload, only the onboard sound card is detected, it does play the whole song, but does not output any sound.
I am trying to install 11.2 but it keeps freezing. I press install and the Linux kernal loads and afterwards I get a black screen and after 30 seconds the DVD player stops running. I have also tried to the online network install and the exact same thing happens. I also tried a DVD I have of 11.1 which I know is good since I have successfully installed it on other machines and the result is also the same. My computer currently has a dual boot of XP and Kubuntu 9.10.
I am returning to Suse after experimenting with Kubuntu but thought I would leave the Kubuntu on the machine (prefer Suse but Kubuntu installed very easily on my computer). Could the Kubuntu be causing this problem or is the difficulty something else? I have also tried the safe install and the other options to no success.
Is it possible to send a libnotify from a cronjob? I'd like a notify message when my daily backup is done. When I run my script from terminal everything is working fine, when (ana)cron runs it, it works as well but the notify is surpressed. My Guess was, that it happens because the jobs are run as root. Nevertheless is it possible to get a notification message?
I wrote a little backupscript wich is working fine if i start it from the shell manualy. But I'm not able to let it start automaticaly via cron in ubuntu 10.10.

Some of my cronjobs are filling up files in my / directory. How do I make this stop? One of my cron jobs uses wget:[URL].. The bexcb0.php file writes a file and then echos a result if it is sucsesfull. These echo results are being put into bexcb0.php files in my /root folder and are piling up.
My / folder is filling up with files bexcb0.php etc bexcb0.php bexcb0.php.1 bexcb0.php.2 bexcb0.php.3 bexcb0.php.4 bexcb0.php.5 etc How do I make this stop? If I just remove the echo will they stop writing to the / folder?
I have added "@daily shutdown -r now" to my root crontab (sudo crontab -e) but it does not seem to ever run. When I look at the chron log using webmin I can see that it tried to run and there was no error. Also when I run it manually using webmin the system reboots fine. I also tried using reboot -f in the crontab instead and that also worked when manually run but not on schedule. The reason I know it didn't run is on webmin it shows the system uptime. I know crontab -e sets a cronjob in /var/spool/cron but how do I set a cronjob to run from /etc/crontab? Is there a command used for this or would I have to manually edit a certain file?
I'm running Ubuntu 10.10 Maverick Meerkat 64-bit on my desktop with a wired internet connection (with no firewall). For the past 2 days, I have observed that1. Firefox randomly throws up errors like "Problem loading page" whenever I click on a hyperlink. When I click on Reload, the page loads up just fine. This has been happening a lot recently..and I do not remember updating anything consciously. By the way, ipv6 is disabled in Firefox.2. The network stops working all of a sudden (usually indicated by the Firefox error). The Autho Eth0 indication is active, but I am unable to connect to any external machine.
3. Needless to say, this error is manifesting itself in apt-get as well. I get "something wicked happened" errors all the time, and am unable to download or install anything.That this is not a problem with the ISP is obvious because I also have Windows (from which I'm typing this, ironically), which is able to access the internet.Is this a bug in Ubuntu 10.10?
I'm working on a bash script that will be run regularly via a cronjob. As there is no easy way for the user to see if it's running in the background, I'd like a have some kind of pop up window what say's something like "Process started" and "Process finished" when it's complete. Ive read though some similar threads and came across xmessage. It kind of does what I want, with the exception of:-Id like the message Process started to stay up for the whole process, but it looks like the script wont continue until the xmessage window is closed. I cant get any xmessages to appear when the script is run from a cronjob. It only appears if I run the script manually from a terminal window. Which is no good for me. If anyone has any suggestions that would be great and just to add, it's doesn't have to be xmessage, any text box would do. I'm working with Redhat 4 and 5, if that makes a difference. I'm trying to setup a cronjob that needs to run every 40 minutes between 10am and 3.30pm.I generally used cronjob for simple configuration, but now I'm a bit lost.There is a way to setup cronjob for that configuration? (better if all in one line of code, not multilines).
I have the following Cron job scheduled on my Postfix mail server: Code: 00 18 * * * /usr/bin/clamscan -r --remove /home/.This is just running a scan on my entire /home/ directory and removing any infected files it finds. My question is since this is being ran at 6pm via Cron, how can I get the results of this job emailed to me via text? Does anyone recommend a command I can add to the end which will dump the results into a file or email and send it to a specific email address? This server is my company Postfix MTA for everyone.
I wrote a small bash script to use feh to change my background every time its called. I use a cron job to have it execute every 5 minutes.
When I run the script manually it works perfectly, however for some reason when its run via cron it fails. I can see that it is executing but it seems to error for some reason.
Its kind of a drag to have a working script that when run as a cron job suddenly no longer works.
I have to run one testcase which opens a web_browser on Linux machine. When a run with cygwin it works but I can't always keep it open. I want to schedule a cronjob to run this testcase.
Currently we have to comment out an rsync task every now and then. Is there a way to have a PHP script on the server so we can simply browse to it to uncomment the rsync task and another one to comment it out again ?
The rsync job is the only job in crontab so even if it means deleting / re-creating the job wouldn't be a problem. I just want to avoid connecting via SSH and VPN every time I am asked to disable it
