OpenSUSE Multimedia :: S/PDIF Only Found In User GUI?
Feb 17, 2011
My motherboard has an optical S/PDIF output that I wish to use. When I browse through my Desktop Kickoff | System Settings | Multimedia, I see this: My digital audio output Furthermore, selecting "Test", results in the test track being heard. I can also see and use this output port in the Amaroc media player (don't know how many other - see later).
However, when I try and see this S/PDIF interface from a "system" view point - YaST | Hardware | Sound, this is all I see: My sound configuration
The issue I'm trying to solve, is that there is no audio output on the S/PDIF for general "system" activities - logon fanfares, Firefox media (Flash), alerts etc.?
i'm using optical s/pdif output, called "hda intel, ad198x digital (iec958 (s/pdif) digital audio output)" in phonon preferences. sounds works just fine -- except i can't use multiple audio sources simultaneously: for example amarok+videos is a no-no. only the first audio source plays, so i have to close amarok in order to listen to any flash videos. i had this problem already with opensuse 11.2, but couldn't figure it out (using 11.3 now).
i just recently got a hunch that it might have something to do with mixing and the s/pdif, and i tried using analog output ("hda intel (ad198x analog)"). lo and behold, it works! amarok+flash that isash still doesn't still consider this a major leap forward.however, i'd like to keep using my optical output.
I build a HTPC from an old computer and installed Ubuntu 10.04LTS. I'm new to Linux and have spent a few weeks tracking down and fixing a few problems.t the moment I've exhausted my ideas as to why I have no S/PDIF output, I'm trying to use the onboard audio from my motherboard. I get sound from the analog output to my computer speakers, but when I connect the coaxial S/PDIF output to my amplifier I get no sound. tried removing and reinstalling ALSA, muting and unmuting outputs in ALSA, checked my amplifier settings and inputs, and probably a few other things I've forgotten. I also tried to follow the troubleshooting and howto guides to the best of my abilityHere's a list of what I have:OS: Ubuntu 10.04LTS
Motherboard: P4C800-Deluxe Onboard Audio: SoundMAX AD1985 AC '97 audio CODEC supports 6-channel 5.1 CPU: P4 2.60GHz overclocked to 3.12GHz Memory: 3gigs Dual DDR PC3200 GPU: GeForce 7800GS HDD: 2, 160GB SATA HDD and 1TB SATA HDD
Mainboard is a Gigabyte GA-790FXTA-UD5, Audio Chip is shown by alsamixer as HDA-Intel - HDA ATI SB, Realtek ALC889. Analog Audio is working fine. Now i tried to use the digital output. And it did not work. AVR and cable are working fine. Software is Ubuntu 11.04.
some dvd's don't work with vlc or kaffeine when I select 'open disc'. Here the log from vlc:
[code]...
Seems this is one of very view disadvantages of a case sensitive OS. Has anyone an idea how I could tell vlc or kaffeine(xine) how to deal with that? I don't want to burn all my dvd's again with capitalised entries.
I have been trying to make a HAL free openSUSE 11.3 build in suse studio for some time now. The problem is, I keep getting a K3B system configuration problem: No CD/DVD/BD writer found. I have been researching on the problem for almost a week and I can't seem to find a solution. I have also been reading about the packages that took over HAL's functionality. My system is mainly Gnome but I have included K3B as I consider it a superior solution to brasero.
Here is a brief overview of my system:Gnome 2.32 from Gnome Factory. KDE 4.6 from KDE Stable. K3B 2.0.2-8 from Packman. Udev, Udisk, Upower and Media-player-info as HAL replacements. Kernel 2.6.38 from Kernel Stable. Latest Xorg.
First Question: I'm I missing any packages that provide some form of HAL's functionality? How were SUSE engineers able to achieve a HAL free openSUSE 11.4?
When I excluded HAL from the selected software packages, I recieved no errors. I'm guesing it's because of the updated KDE.
I have a network set up that has been working for around a year with no problems but has now developed a login problem. The system was set up with a main server with all users on it and another PC located elsewhere that people could log onto using there personal login and password that then gained access to the account on the main server. This remote PC has now got the problem. When you try to log onto an account it comes up with the message "your session has lasted less than 10 seconds. If you have not logged out yourself this could mean there is a installation problem or that you are out of disk space."
Error message says that no profile for the user can be found and it couldnt create per-user gnome configuration directory. I can log on as root onto the remote PC as it is obviously a local account but all the account on the main server are not accessible. From the root account I can see that the connection to the server is OK and I can actually log into the accounts on the server using the failsafe session so the physical network is OK.
I never built or designed this set up and to be honest I normally work with windows so its all a bit strange to me. Both PC's run Centos 5. I have checked the messages log and there doesnt seem to be any indication of a problem. Just that it stopped connecting from the remote PC. The accounts are all active on the main server itself and have no problems being accessed.
I have been trying to get this web cam working for a long time. lsusb:
Code: Bus 004 Device 003: ID 06a2:0003 Topro Technology, Inc. dmesg
Code: [ 1990.570050] usb 4-1: new full speed USB device using uhci_hcd and address 3 [ 1990.751460] usb 4-1: configuration #1 chosen from 1 choice Kernel patch: [URL] Driver project: [URL]
Cheese simply says no camera found. Skryba says no devices found. Since this kernel patch was 2009-04-07 which is nearly a year ago it should be in latest kernel?
I am trying to output all of my sound through the s/pdif output on my motherboard. It works fine in Windows 7, I just had to go under the sound properties and switch from the analog to the s/pdif. When I try to do the same in Ubuntu, theres nothing listed. Only "internal audio analog stereo" and "HDMI Audio" (from my graphics card) display under the output choices in Sound Preferences. Under hardware only the HDMI and Internal Analog show up as well. I tried looking at the Gnome-Alsa mixer but nothing in there either.
Quite some time ago I managed to get sound working perfectly on my DELL Inspiron 1720 under openSUSE 11.2 and KDE 4.3.5. Then suddenly some months ago for one of the four regular users on my system sound stopped working! KMix is always muted after KDE session startup for this user and even if you unmute it there's still absolutely no sound; in particular, the commandspeaker-test -c2 -l5 -twavdoesn't generate any sound (while I do see the printed output which doesn't contain any error messages). Even if I su to root in the very same Konsole window speaker-test remains silent!
Since sound is OK for the three other regular users I've already compared KMix settings as well as System Settings > Multimedia for each of the regular users but found absolutely no differences. BTW: In System Settings > Multimedia I have XINE set as the backend and "PulseAudio" has priority over "HDA Intel (STAC92xx Analog)" for all sort of audio output, and - perhaps needless to mention - all the four regular users are members of group "audio".
I have a system with an on-board S/PDIF output (the one I want to use) and a ATI graphics card that has an HDMI output and therefore an own audio device./proc/asound/cards shows me the following:
Code: 0 [SB ]: HDA-Intel - HDA ATI SB HDA ATI SB at 0xfe7f8000 irq 16
After many fruitless weeks of reading forums, newsgroups etc, I still fial to get digital output working my SoundBlaster Live Platinum. Ordinary PCM output is passed to the digital receiver witout a problem, but as soon as I try AC3 or DTS it's all silence. I have unmuted the IEC958 channel in alsamixer and added gain to them. However all still fails. find below the output of relevant commands:
uname -a Code: Linux Mediacenter 2.6.31-14-generic #48-Ubuntu SMP Fri Oct 16 14:04:26 UTC 2009 i686 GNU/Linux aplay -L Code: default:CARD=Live
With OpenSuSE 11.2, I would have a guest account running skype, and a media account running mythtv (both users logged in at the same time using switch user). I had skype on auto answer incoming calls, and I remember watching a movie when I suddenly heard my Dad's voice appear calling my name. That was cool!
Now that I'm using OpenSuSE 11.3 (both were using KDE), skype only plays audio when that user's session is active. Switching to the media account will prevent skype from starting to play any sound. Switch back, sound is normal. If I remember correctly, now the skype audio cuts out as soon as I switch user.
I also have a tv capture card which only STARTS to captures analog audio when the media session is active, mythtv being run by the user media. Once the show is started to record with sound, we can switch users and the show continue to record with sound.
The only thing that should be configured differently from the default install is that I compiled mythtv (it wasn't available as an rpm when I upgraded to 11.3, and haven't bothered to check since).
I can not get any output from the digital optical S/PDIF jack on my on-board audio device. But I am getting an analog signal from the headphone jack. I don't have an RCA S/PDIF cable, so I haven't tested the RCA S/PDIF jack. Below are my system specs and hardware info.
According to my MOBO (DFI Blood-Iron P45) manual, the Audio device is: Realtek ALC885 HDA CODEC 8-channel audio output Optical S/PDIF-out and coaxial RCA S/PDIF interfaces
There are 6 phone jacks (including 1 mic), an RCA S/PDIF, and an Optical S/PDIF jack on the MOBO. The output of alsa-info.sh is here:[URL]... Note that I tried several model options (6stack-dig, 6stack-dig-demo, intel-alc889a, auto) for the snd-hda-intel module, but none worked,
I am pulling my hair out once again after trying for over 15 months off and on to get a tv tuner working under linux. I have just received my new tuner card which I thought was supposed to be easy to run, a HVR-950Q, no luck yet. But first I am trying to use something called mysql (new to me), for mythtv and [I] keep getting
# mysqladmin -u root password ma mysqladmin: connect to server at 'localhost' failed error: 'Access denied for user 'root'@'localhost' (using password: NO)
I have a webcam that don't work with cheese ("no device found"). cheese works with an other camera, so it's not the problem. Googl says the cam should work ([all variants] Alcor Micro Corp. webcam just works - Ubuntu Forums), if the usb numbers mean anything dmesg gives this:
I have FC10 newly installed, and Apache is serving content from /var/www/ okay.
I'm trying to get Apache to serve web content from user's home directories. This is what I've tried with no success:
Uncommented 'UserDir public_htm' in /etc/httpd/conf/httpd.conf and commented out 'UserDir disabled'.
And...
Uncommented user directory section in /etc/httpd/conf/httpd.conf. It now reads as follows: # # Control access to UserDir directories. The following is an example # for a site where these directories are restricted to read-only. #
[Code].....
I also tried setenforce 0 to temporarily disable SELinux until the next reboot. No luck. It doesn't appear to be an SELinux issue.
That's as far as the information available will take me. I still get URL 'Not Found' when I try to access http://192.168.0.2/~myusername/
I'm trying to get Xorg running on a Dell 2850.I can't get it to work.I installed xorg-x11-drivers via yum, and used both "Radeon / ati" drivers, including the default vesa.
Here are the main errors (error log file attached):
Could not init font path element unix/:7100, removing from list! (**) RADEON(0): RADEONSaveScreen(2) localuser:root being added to access control list No profile for user 'root' found
[code]...
and at the end it says:
FreeFontPath: FPE "built-ins" refcount is 2, should be 1; fixing.
i have install and configure the qmail server in centos 5.4 and its working fine. i have created the domain (ex - abc.com)in qmail server and also create the user and its working fine. but i am not able to send the mail which user not found in qmail(abc.com) server, which are created on the web (at isp side or pop user)
"failed to run * as user root, the gksu-run-helper program is not found or is not executable"
Tried googling and checking threads at LQ didnt find a solution or another instance running slackware64 current.. everything built fine, tried and everythings executable...I also have Alien's multilib installed, with only firefox and flashplugin as 32bit, everything else 64bit. I can't open any apps as root by normal user
I found that if any usual user is logged into a NDS-tree, then _local_ root has full access to user's network shares, including the user's home directory located on remote Netware-server. Is it by design or have I missed something? Nevertheless in windows local admin has no access to network resources mounted of any other user. If you runas shell (as admin) then admin in principle can't "see" network shares which were mounted (connected) by other users - they are accessible ("visible") per session.
Take a physical user FRED. FRED is a linux user ( known by linux on his laptop ) FRED is a Samba user ( Known by samba on the samba pdc server ) When he logs locally (with username/password) on its standalone laptop (with no network), he is known as FRED:user. He access his data in /home/FRED/. When he logs through samba (with username/password) on the domain MY_DOM, he is known as MY_DOMFRED:MY_DOMdomain user. He access his data in /home/MY_DOM/FRED/. ) Is it possible that the human FRED has only one repository and have full access to its repository regardless of how it was connected. If yes, how to do it
2) If not, Is it possible that the human FRED has full access to /home/FRED/.............. and /home/MY_DOM/FRED/.
what is the correct way/procedure to re-create a user home directory. For instance, on a Mac/Windows machine, i would just rename the existing user profile [home dir], and then just log back in as the user - job done. On OpenSuse/Linux, it seems it does not work that way..?! When i try to rename my home folder to say me.old via root, and log back in as me, i get all kinds of errors. Opensuse does create a new home dir, but it appears not properly.
I installed debian 4.0 (etch) on an old computer with some pickled graphics card in it, and then I upgraded the computer to one with slightly newer hardware only without the graphics card (the new one used on board graphics). I moved the hard drive from the old one to the new one but when I booted it up it failed to start the X-server and I got some errors listed for "device not found" and "no screens found".
I tried using "dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg" however I can't seem to find a working configuration. It seems pretty silly that when installing debian it can detect all this automatically with no problems but when it comes to changing some hardware around you are left in the dark with a complicated re-configuration process. Is there not some way to automate this? I'd rather not have to re-install everything
I have installed squid 2.6,sarge,webmin 1.5,squidguard1.3, dansguardia in a centos 5.4 version.Since I want to implement the password change option using web, i installed changepassword 0.9.Everything was working fine except the changepassword cgi. I can see the interface of change password screen and when i tried to change the password using web, it displayed "user not found or invalid. Please go back and try again." But actually there is a user with that password. My password is stored at /etc/squid/squid_passwd.I have changed the permissions to 777 .But all in vain. Where i can search for the logs?the httpd log is as follows
