OpenSUSE :: Logged In As Root But Getting "user Davfs2 Does Not Exist"
Jan 23, 2011But I've gotten as far as getting davfs to work on RH Linux. However, on SuSE I'm logged in as root, but when I issue the mount command I'm getting "user davfs2 does not exist". (I was getting "group davfs2 does not exist", so I created the group (groupadd davfs2) then added the user davfs2 to the new group by following the instructions at The Nerdrium : Linux : Creating Groups.
The command I'm issuing is: mount -t davfs http://.....
I get challenged for credentials, but after I enter them I get the "user davfs2 does not exist" message.
Debian Configuration :: User Cannot Shutdown While Root Is Logged In
Jun 29, 2011on my netbook I've tried to make possible for my user to shutdown without needing a password. battery could run low when I'm not in front of it. Editing sudoers has allowed my user to shutdown the system, but Gnome still prompts me for the root password whenever root is logged in too. That's usually the case, because to avoid entering the root password multiple times whenever I need elevated privileges and not wanting to cache the root password, I keep a Root Terminal always open.

Jan 5, 2010I have a Red Hat 4 server with Sungard Luminis installed on it. I was following some instructions on setting up Luminis to start at boot. One of the steps was modifying the sudoers file. Since modifying the sudores file, I am no longer able to "su" to root when logged in as a normal user. When doing so, I get su: incorrect password after putting in the password. I have another server with the exact same setup, broken one is test, the other is production, that works just fine. I made no changes to my production server. I've been looking at different things all day and the only difference I have found between the two are the results I get from running rpm -q --verify coreutils. Running that on my prodution server returns nothing. Results from my test server are below. Is this what is causing my problems? If so, what's the fix? I haven't found that yet. I've checked /etc/pam.d/su, both servers are the same.

Dec 20, 2010I have a pc where I run ubuntu 10.10 and on this pc i have installed vlc and on boot i start the vlc http interface. Therefor I created the file /etc/init.d/vlc. The file seems like this:

and I also updated rc.d. Vlc starts on boot as desired I also can send commands like in_play the file (a playlist) is loaded and reguarding the status.xml the file is played. But when no user is logged in I hear no sound. When I perform a login on the machine there is first still no sound but when I send e.g. the pl_next command or call in_play again then there is sound. Sadly the pc shouldn't be attached to a monitor and therefor I can't perform a login everytime so I need sound, when noone is logged in. Why is there no sound?

Jun 16, 2011I have recently installed Opensuse 11.4 on my desktop. And also upgraded my gnome-2 to gnome-3. Its works nice and I am enjoying it. Only the biggest problem I am facing is, if I lock the screen and leave my desk for couple of hours then user gets logged out automatically. Which is resulting all the documents and applications gets closed. I am unable to work in my desktop now.

We have a machine that is used by a number of users with a low level of tech savvy. The machine gets logged in as a generic user which works for most purposes, but due to a management requirement, we need Firefox to be run under an account set up for the individual user. I've gotten that bit to work fine, but what I can't figure out is a friendly (GUI) way to allow users to change their own password while the machine is logged in as the generic user. I would like to use gnome-passwd, but I've been unable to figure out how to get it to run for a user other than the logged-in generic user.

I found that if any usual user is logged into a NDS-tree, then _local_ root has full access to user's network shares, including the user's home directory located on remote Netware-server. Is it by design or
have I missed something? Nevertheless in windows local admin has no access to network resources mounted of any other user. If you runas shell (as admin) then admin in principle can't "see" network shares which were mounted (connected) by other users - they are accessible ("visible") per session.

Jan 2, 2011Just recently discovered that for a non-root user the touchpad on my Acer laptop ( Aspire 5720z fyi ) isn't working in X ( KDE or XFCE ). It does work in in tty (at login) and for root it works in both environments.
I'm running 13.1 x64 on it, with the normal security patches via slackpkg. Didn't notice before since I normally use a mouse (and thus I do like the touchpad being disabled so I don't 'tap' away the cursur while typing).
With the recent holidays (with family visits and all) I took the laptop on my lap,.and voila: no trackpad movement.. I did some searching allready, but this problem seems to be solved since a while, and isn't supposed to be in 13.1

General :: Aplay Not Working On Ubuntu 11.04 For Root User / What To Do?
Sep 21, 2011I have ALSA on Ubuntu 11.04 version.
When I play aplay through my normal user, I am able to get the output.
When I do this with the root user, the command hangs: below stuff happens
root@myuser:~# aplay -l
**** List of PLAYBACK Hardware Devices ****
(hangs)
Also if I export the $HOME to /home/myuser/ then it works. So whats wrong for running the aplay command with a root.
Slackware :: VirtualBox Stopped Working For Non Root User After Updates
Oct 21, 2010I haven't used my VB for a few weeks however all of a sudden it refuses to work for my normal non-root user. It's almost as if it can't find libraries in the /opt/VirtualBox directory. Initially it refused to start completely so I linked the required libs into /usr/lib64 ( yip real hack. Then it started but a vm would not start, and comes up with an error about a missing lib again which is definitely there. My non-root user is in the vb group and nothing besides system updates has changed. vb 3.2.10 slack64-current.

But somehow I have to login as root and run the vbox as root. otherwise if I run the vbox as a normal user, I cannot mount the magicjack usb device, it appears as a grey disabled box. Jan 26, 2011I'm on Squeeze with KDE 4.4.5. Basically, I can use my password for things like logging in, or authenticating on a shell with sudo successfully. But in other cases, I am asked to "become root", and when I enter my usual password, I'm told to check if I entered my password correctly. This happens with Aptitude (terminal GUI), for example: from Actions, I try to update the package list, and when I enter my password, I can read su: Authentication failure. However, if I start Aptitude by typing kdesudo aptitude on Konsole I can enter my password in the authentication box successfully, and use Aptitude with administrative privileges.
The example is valid also for other applications, such as System Monitor: just for the sake of the example, if I try to stop a process owned by root, say Aptitude, I'm asked for a password to become root, but my password doesn't do the trick. I'll have to open it from terminal with kdesudo ksysguard, then I'll be allowed to kill that process. Does it have anything to do with my choice at installation? I think I must have chosen to leave the root password field blank, and only entered my password as a user, for it explained I could become root anytime if there was need to with sudo.
Debian :: Accents Just Work When Logged As Root
Mar 10, 2011I can use the accents (tilde, acute, ...) normally when I am the root, but when I log into my user account they re not recognized in most applications (opera, emacs, amsn, python idle,...) although they work in other applications (terminal, vim, iceweasel...). I guess that would have a simple solution. Something is right in the root account and wrong in my user account, but I cant figure it out. My layout is USA International (with dead keys).

My root account seems to be insulted by a 'non-root' user!.When I am doing updates or other important work as root any silly user can just 'halt' my computer. Can somebody tell me how to set up my computer so that when root is logged in no other user can simply halt the computer.

Feb 18, 2009Fedora 9 and a maxtor 500gb external It seems i cant get the hd to initialize (not sure if thats the correct word for it) until I log in as root. I can see the icon on the desktop for it and everything, but when i double click on the icon nothing happens. It also doesnt appear in /media/. If I log out of the user account and log into root, all of the sudden i can open the icon in both root AND the user account. It also shows up in /media/. I'm not sure if its a permissions issue or something else.
ps: using ssh to log into root from another machine makes no difference though, only using X or whatever its called from the physical machine.

May 5, 2010I am trying to login to a redhat server via VNC. This used to work until I reloaded the box. Although I had previously logged in directly to the box, then I could vnc to it remotely. The service is running, netstat states the ports are open and listening.I can ssh to the box, and ran the usual commands to start the services.So my question is. Do I need to have a local user logged in before I can VNC, if so how can I do that via the command line.If this is not required for a local user to be logged in, what am I missing. Other than VNC, which other services do I need to start.

Mar 30, 2010How come you can shut down or reboot from the gui w/o needing root privelages, but if I enter "shutdown -h now" on the command line I am met with "shutdown: Need to be root".
Also- somewhat unrelated to my first question- I recall when I first started Ubuntu-ing, if I wanted to shut down or reboot while another user was logged in, I'd need to enter my password- but it doesn't do that anymore. Two users can be logged in with multiple applications open, and if I reboot or shutdown, it just goes for it? (using 9.04, for now...)
