CentOS 5 Hardware :: Audio Via Optical S/PDIF Output On On-board RealTek ALC885 HDA?
Mar 29, 2010I can not get any output from the digital optical S/PDIF jack on my on-board audio device. But I am getting an analog signal from the headphone jack. I don't have an RCA S/PDIF cable, so I haven't tested the RCA S/PDIF jack. Below are my system specs and hardware info.
According to my MOBO (DFI Blood-Iron P45) manual, the Audio device is:
Realtek ALC885 HDA CODEC
8-channel audio output
Optical S/PDIF-out and coaxial RCA S/PDIF interfaces
There are 6 phone jacks (including 1 mic), an RCA S/PDIF, and an Optical S/PDIF jack on the MOBO. The output of alsa-info.sh is here:[URL]... Note that I tried several model options (6stack-dig, 6stack-dig-demo, intel-alc889a, auto) for the snd-hda-intel module, but none worked,

Jun 30, 2010I build a HTPC from an old computer and installed Ubuntu 10.04LTS. I'm new to Linux and have spent a few weeks tracking down and fixing a few problems.t the moment I've exhausted my ideas as to why I have no S/PDIF output, I'm trying to use the onboard audio from my motherboard. I get sound from the analog output to my computer speakers, but when I connect the coaxial S/PDIF output to my amplifier I get no sound. tried removing and reinstalling ALSA, muting and unmuting outputs in ALSA, checked my amplifier settings and inputs, and probably a few other things I've forgotten. I also tried to follow the troubleshooting and howto guides to the best of my abilityHere's a list of what I have:OS: Ubuntu 10.04LTS

Jul 13, 2011Mainboard is a Gigabyte GA-790FXTA-UD5, Audio Chip is shown by alsamixer as HDA-Intel - HDA ATI SB, Realtek ALC889. Analog Audio is working fine. Now i tried to use the digital output. And it did not work. AVR and cable are working fine. Software is Ubuntu 11.04.

Aug 25, 2010i'm using optical s/pdif output, called "hda intel, ad198x digital (iec958 (s/pdif) digital audio output)" in phonon preferences. sounds works just fine -- except i can't use multiple audio sources simultaneously: for example amarok+videos is a no-no. only the first audio source plays, so i have to close amarok in order to listen to any flash videos. i had this problem already with opensuse 11.2, but couldn't figure it out (using 11.3 now).
i just recently got a hunch that it might have something to do with mixing and the s/pdif, and i tried using analog output ("hda intel (ad198x analog)"). lo and behold, it works! amarok+flash that isash still doesn't still consider this a major leap forward.however, i'd like to keep using my optical output.

I've realized that when I'm in XBMC (which is admittedly the only place I watch movies) certain sounds like gunshots will be extremely louder than something like dialog. My friend believes that I should mess around with the channels (to fake the center channel from the left and right) I don't want to threaten Linux, how lightweight I can make it which is critical to an HTPC, but considering XBMC just got a Netflix addon

May 6, 2010I am trying to output all of my sound through the s/pdif output on my motherboard. It works fine in Windows 7, I just had to go under the sound properties and switch from the analog to the s/pdif. When I try to do the same in Ubuntu, theres nothing listed. Only "internal audio analog stereo" and "HDMI Audio" (from my graphics card) display under the output choices in Sound Preferences. Under hardware only the HDMI and Internal Analog show up as well. I tried looking at the Gnome-Alsa mixer but nothing in there either.

Feb 19, 2010After many fruitless weeks of reading forums, newsgroups etc, I still fial to get digital output working my SoundBlaster Live Platinum. Ordinary PCM output is passed to the digital receiver witout a problem, but as soon as I try AC3 or DTS it's all silence. I have unmuted the IEC958 channel in alsamixer and added gain to them. However all still fails. find below the output of relevant commands:

Jul 11, 2010I recently got a new ATI HD 4890 graphics card that supports sound over HDMI. It works in my other OS (Windows 7) but I cannot get it to work in Xubuntu. I read somewhere that by default the open source drivers have HDMI sound disabled. How do I turn it on? I even tried the Comprehensive Sound Problems Solutions Guide and still have no sound.

Jun 10, 2011I have a StarTech USB audio adapter which I have been unable to get output from in Suse. Pavucontrol allows me to adjust the output to this device, and even shows some signal when playing media. However, no output makes it to the headset/speaker jack of the USB device. There does not appear to be any issues with playing media to the internal sound card & speakers of the computer. I booted up a Live Ubuntu disk, the device was recognized, and output made it with no problem. This leads me to discount a hardware problem. I'm running Suse 11.4 on a Lenovo Thinkpad T420s.

May 16, 2010I am unable to play audio CDs. I have 2 CD drives and upon insertion of of a CD into the top drive, it notices the CD and asks what I want to do... Play with Kaffeine results in it opening, but then nothing happens. When I do the same thing with the CD in the bottom drive, it plays the first track of the CD but nothing else. Every time. With different CDs.

Requirement: to play simultaneously a different media file and be able to listen through say headphone / laptop speakers. While a movie audio is only heard on TV, other audio is heard only on laptop speaker.

When I browse through my Desktop Kickoff | System Settings | Multimedia, I see this: My digital audio output Furthermore, selecting "Test", results in the test track being heard. I can also see and use this output port in the Amaroc media player (don't know how many other - see later).
However, when I try and see this S/PDIF interface from a "system" view point - YaST | Hardware | Sound, this is all I see: My sound configuration
The issue I'm trying to solve, is that there is no audio output on the S/PDIF for general "system" activities - logon fanfares, Firefox media (Flash), alerts etc.?

Nov 13, 2010I am honestly uncertain if I ever had audio. I thought I did, but that may have been a different machine or a different install. I don't frequentl use anything that requires audio. Nothing is obviously muted, amixer has everthing turned up at least half way.

Nov 14, 2010I have Songbird running on another display on the same machine as my Mythtv frontend but while the frontend is running, audio seems to be disabled for it and other applications. I assume that this is because Mythtv suspends Pulse audio.
Is it possible to make this work without enabling pulse audio?

Jan 14, 2011I am trying to get the 5.1 audio working on the gigabyte g31m-es2l mobo which has ALC883 audio chipset.Its onboard audio.
Its a fresh installation of ubuntu.I have set the sound properties as below.The speaker test only works for the front right and front left speakers.Rest other speakers are muted.
Also tried editing the /etc/pulse/daemon.conf file with uncommenting the audio channels from 2 to 6 and rebooting.Still its not working.
Tried running the following command and again only the front right and left speakers light up.

Aug 2, 2011I have a TV card connected to my Dish box, and I would like to use it on my computer. The tv card works fine, and the audio is connected to my line in. The audio card receives the audio signal, and I can set the volume and record it without any problem, but I can't get it to redirect to an output in order to hear the sound. I have been battling with this issue since a kernel update back when 11.2 was about to come out. Back then, the alsa mixer had an option called audio loop-back, which did the trick. Since I know I ca record the audio and play it back without any problem, is there an application that can do this automatically and simultaneously?

Jan 4, 2010Just did a fresh install of Karmic, got all necessary decoders installed for video and audio playback...I think.
Problem is I can't forward/search in audio files I am playing. I mean I can only Play, Pause, Stop or "Next-track" a music file. Video files are fine.
I've tried Exaile, Rythmbox and even Totem. It is like the audio files are "half read-only".
If I drag a horizontal scroller in the music player and let it go, it will only jump back to the position where it is actually playing.
Has anyone experienced, this? I am a missing something in gstreamer or something like it?
