OpenSUSE :: Kate Crashes On Launching?

kate is my favorite text editor, and everything was working fine until recently. Whenever launching Kate, whether by opening a text file or by clicking the Kate icon, a dialog box pops up that KDEInit could not launch 'konsole'. In the background, a konsole window flashes briefly before disappearing.The baffling thing is, that if I click the "run Kate" shortcut, instead of the Kate shortcut, then Kate launches normally. I'm running 11.2 with all the updates installed

I've recently been trying to put Centos on a PC which I have had Windows 2000 server on up until now. The system has an Intel SCSI RAID Controller which seems to be successfully detected before the graphical stage is reached. The system is fairly old now and consists of a p3 processor and 320mb of ram. However when the installer reaches the point of launching Anaconda in graphical mode it seems to start to load but then the system immediately boots itself down Quoting an Abnormal Setup Termination however gives no more details than that. I have tried changing the graphics card to no effect. I am not sure if anyone knows what could be causing the problem the media also shuld be ok as I have used it successfully on other systems.

Yesterday I upgraded to ubuntu 11.4 and since then firefox (4) doesn't get beyond starting and showing for maybe three seconds. Then it crashes and Mozilla Crash Reporter tells me mozilla are sorry

I am having a problem with my Core i5 system running Centos 5.5. The system will lock up with a black screen on occasion when launching X11 - this could happen at any time, from the install CD the first time it's being installed or trying a live CD, or the 3rd-10th time I launch startx from tty1 or sometimes just switching from tty1 to display0 or display1. When the crash occurs, sometimes the systems fans will all turn on loud, and the reset button becomes non-responsive. Other times the screen is black and it just sits there and I have to hard power off. There's nothing in /var/log/messages.
I tried a fix from an old post for 5.4 adding the option for "DDC" "false" in the xorg.conf file, and this did not help. I also ran all the system updates, no help.
The system is totally stable so long as I don't switch between ttys and X11 or launch new X11s (it's also stable under other OSs and has passed Memtest86+ 4).
Is this an instability with the Core i5 driver? The "Video Card" in the display options is set to "intel - Experimental modesetting driver for Intel Integrated Graphics Chipsets" - the "experimental" part is a little scary. Should I try setting the driver to "i810" as the 5.5 release notes recommends (again there's no onboard "chipset" this is an embedded graphics processor on the i5 CPU).

I have a permissions question that I'm sure has a simple answer but one I can't find. When saving files through SSH using kate or kwrite, the permissions always reset to 644 when I want them to stay at 666/777. When using notepad (not sure what this is, it's just in my right click contex menu under "open with...") the permissions persisted after I saved. Permissions also persist with kate and kwrite on my local machine.
Is this something I need to configure on the server? Using Opensuse 11.2, kde 4.3, kwrite 4.3.1-5.6.3, kate 4.3.1-3.7

I'am trying to change the color scheme of kate, using ./install.sh or append the content to that archive explained here:

but doesn't seem change nothing, and doesn't appear "zenbur" in "Default Scheme", or even directly in kateschemarc but it is empty!

I wanted to fix something in the Kate editor. So instead of downloading it from it's website (Get It! - Kate | Get an Edge in Editing) I wanted to download the "openSUSE Kate" source package. But as you can see, there is no source package available. I tested it with source installation of "zypper" (zypper si zypper) and it worked.Any ideas? Is the kate source code in another package?

After upgrading to KDE4.7 I would get the error message, "A KDE text-editor component could not be found. Please check your KDE installation.", when I clicked on text files. The all knowing Google provided no answer so I am leaving my solution here in case others are as unfortunate.
For some reason kdelibs3-32bit is pulled in when I upgraded to kde 4.7, removing it fixed the problem.

I am working on a English (US) KDE installation of opensuse 11.2 with a US keyboard and I have some troubles to configure my system in order to work on some French documents using Kate, Kwrite or Eclipse.
For instance, when I save the content of this link [url] on my hard-drive and open the file in Kate, Kwrite or Eclipse, all accentuated characters are displayed as black lozenge signs with a ? inside. What should I fix in my configuration to have those characters show correctly?
A related but maybe slightly different situation is the following: In Eclipse, when I use a French keyboard layout in Eclipse (using the shortcut Ctrl + Alt + K after setup in Configure Desktop > Regional & Language), I can type and display accentuated characters correctly. However, as soon as I spell check my document (I believe Eclipse use aspell for that), all the words containing the accentuated characters that I typed are shown as being wrong. Eclipse suggests some corrections that show up with black lozenge signs with a ? inside...

I get segmentation fault error while trying to launch eric python IDE. I tried reinstalling a lot of times but with no use. I even tried using a different version but gives the same error. I am only installing it through rpms. here is the stacktrace.

I own a Microsoft Wireless Keyboard 1000 which I'm overall pleased with. The keyboard has some extra media and application launching keys which I try to assign in systemsettings>Input Actions. I believe the application is called khotkeys, however I'm not sure. Four different cases occurred as follows: The keys are recognized and can be assigned a command to run. When settings are saved the specified application launches. Examples of keys that works:

In Dolphin Super User mode trying to launch an application such as Kwrite gives the alert

Is there a way to set up Kate to use a single template to set both the normal and printing fonts without having to go into "settings > configure kate" each time I create a new document?
In /home/tom/.kde4/share/config/kateschemarc the printing and normal are separate categories. Is there a way to change both at the same time?

I wanted to make some modifications to a Kate plugin, so I cloned the git repository, started doing a few changes, and it compiled. The problem is that when I run it, it uses the version of the plugin installed in the system, not the one compiled with Kate.

I'm using version 13.37 for Slackware (not current). I've tried using XFCE and KDE (currently using KDE) and after using it for a while, it will seemingly randomly crash (20 minutes to multiple hours). The only thing that seems to be constant is that I'm always using Kate when it happens.

I am running ubunutu 9.10 and am having problems with the Kate text editor (v3.3.2). I leave my computer on for many weeks at a time as it is part of a network and others use it to run code on. During this time I am using kate as my text editor, and copy and paste from kate to other applciations, such as the terminal.
Infrequently but regularly enough to cause me trouble I can no longer paste text I copy from kate. I can copy and paste within kate, but I cant copy from kate and paste into the terminal or thuderbird, or firefox etc.

I am a CS major and Iv'e been using vim with a custom rc file to do my editing... A professor suggested we can use kate with terminal for better speed so I thought I would give it a try. Unlike vim, geany, eclipse and others kate does not indent java code, for example after "{ <ENTER>" it should indent to the right 1 tab, but it does not, so I have to press <TAB> every time I go to new like, and I have to go back and forth for different statements...
This does not make things faster at all, Is this even possible? Any other editor suggestions that do not use GTK, but kde native Qt with terminal emulator?

If you have a script that works sometimes and doesn't work other times in Kate and there just might be error outputs that kate isn't passing around in any obvious manner, how would one know how to find out what's going wrong?I'm talking about the user-made scripts under Tools/External Tools. When you run those scripts and an error happens, I don't see any error output.

I'm trying to teach myself Japanese.So, naturally, I signed up at a Japanese social website for language practice. Now, all I need is to be able to type in Japanese. I followed the instructions at this site, and everything seems to work. Everything, that is, except kate. Every other app works fine (even the terminal). But when I press enter to confirm my choice of hiragana/katakana/kanji in kate, the characters just vanish as though they were never there
