Iam tring to install 11.4 on my new computer, when i start the computer the green screen pops up and syslinux starts. However when it finishes loading a dialog box pops up saying "Make sure that cd number 1 is in your drive" . Obviously it it is,
because i am booting from the dvd. I dropped to the shell where i saw this message "Inappropriate ioct1 for device". What does all this mean.

Did a clean install with 11.2 after being very impressed with the LiveCD. After installation process finished, laptop booted up and I had a green screen, no icons and a mouse cursor. REALLY liked the way the OS performed on the LIVECD and would like to give it a real shot.I can install Fedora 11, Ubuntu, Madriva and Mint Linux with no problem on the same Toshiba laptop.

I've installed Ubuntu on my PS3 system, and when I play a DVD video using VLC the video is striped with green vertical bars. Naturally, i can't watch it like this, so I also tried Movie Player, which frezzes up alot, so then I tried Kaffine, which failed to work at all! Every video player I know is useless when it comes to playing some DVDs on my PS3, (I say some because others work fine, and no, there's nothing wrong with the DVDs thereselves).

everytime I try to shutdown/reboot, it gets to the screen where it has the green/bold status messages on the side, but then it simply stops. The cursor doesn't blink, nothing happens...you could wait 10 minutes, and it would still be at that same screen. I don't know if I've described this well enough for anyone to understand, but I hope so! I don't have a camera, but if I did...I'd post a picture of where I mean...
But like I said, after getting to a certain, without actually shutting down, it simply stops and does absolutely nothing. This is rather inconvenient, and I'd like to find a solution to this if possible. EDIT: I'm sorry I didn't provide any hardware info, but I'm using Gnome...This didn't happen 100% of the time KDE like it does now though. (But it DID happen in KDE as well) I'm using OpenSUSE 11.2... I'll be back in a moment with hardware info, assuming it may aid in a solution.

I have 3 separate hard drives. Drives 1 and 2 are striped together and I have openSUSE 11.3 installed. On the third disk I have WindowsXP-64 Professional. I installed SUSE first with the third disk unplugged. I then installed WinXP with the two SUSE disks unplugged. My fdisk -l is:
Disk /dev/sdb: 750.2 GB, 750156374016 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 91201 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes
Sector size (logical/physical): 512 bytes / 512 bytes
I/O size (minimum/optimal): 512 bytes / 512 bytes

OpenSUSE seems to have an issue picking up and working with my newer webcam. This webcam does work with linux, it works with Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid and Linux Mint 9 Isadora but openSUSE 11.3 doesnt seem to like it. Information about webcam drivers seems to be missing now, I tried the drivers repo but no luck. Cheese freezes and WXcam comes up with a green screen with no video. This is a gateway product by my understanding but it seems to be linux compatible, especially with the Linux 2.6.34 kernel that both Ubuntu and openSUSE use right now. But for some reason its not quite clicking with openSUSE 11.3

I was messing around with a few software install packages when I stumbled on a nvidia package for Geforce. I installed it and then later decided I didn't need it. I uninstalled it and when I booted my computer up some time later, my desktop would not load. Only in fail safe boot option do I get a desktop. Other wise It goes to command shell.I tried startxResult:

My laptop is a Core 2 Centrino and i installed OpenSUSE 11.3 i586 on it recently. I tried to install the graphic card's driver using this instruction:ATI Installer HOWTO for openSUSE usersafter installation was done, i restarted the system but during the boot, where the openSUSE appears, the screen went black and nothing happened afterward untill i turned of the system manually.i tried again and same result, so i logged in with failsafe and un-installed those packages, now the system boots successfully, but it boots to the terminal instead of the desktop. i might have removed the X server package or something important.now that i have access to terminal and i can log in, i thought i can do something with it and solve it this way rather than re-installing the whole OS.he graphic card is :ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4570, if anyone knows how to the driver for this card, please let me know how to.

It happens like 50% of my Suse 11.2 startups, when I type in my password at login screen and hit enter, Gnome do not start, i can only see the green blank screen,or sometimes it start to show only my custom wallpaper and nothing more, when i try ctrl+alt+backspacex2 and login again everything seems to work fine, but what could be wrong ? is it a hardware issue ? Moreover, sometimes when I want to shutdown my laptop and click the shutdown button, suse do logout, but instead of turning off the laptop , it brings me to login screen, clicking the shutdown button at login screen makes my hdd lamp blink and thats all.

I can configure my software's appearance? Well, for the KDM theme, the Grub Bootsplash, i can download themes people so generously create. I however, desire the BOOTSPLASH. or whatever it is, of openSUSE 11.1. the green with white veins in the background, and a strip of black running horizontally across, with "openSUSE" written on it in white. i mean the one that masks the initial Text interface, the FIRST GUI you see after GRUB. The one that also shows when you power down. Is this a plausible endevour? I do have my 11.1 iso, in case it's stored as a theme in there.

When trying to "Leave" the system (either via the small button on the lower right of the taskbar or by right clicking on the Desktop and selecting "Leave") the logout / shutdown / restart screen comes up. I have the "Logout" desktop effect activated, which is supposed to desaturated the background when the Leave screen appears. However, instead of simply greying out the background, the image on the desktop and the rest of the screen also gets slightly distorted, with seemingly random distortion effects cropping up all over the place (e.g. horizontal lines or large blurs).
These distortions are different every time the Leave screen comes up. The Leave screen itself is displayed fine, and apart from the dodgy background I have no other issues with the whole process (the system shuts down or restarts properly according to my choice). I am using the Radeon drivers, and all other desktop effects I have on (Magic lamb, cover switch, present windows, etc) work fine and without a hitch. It's only the Logout effect that seems to glitch. Are the distortions intentionally created by the effect in order to emphasize the focus on the Leave screen?

I recently installed openSuse 11.2 KDE in a Dell 1535 laptop.
I tried to enable the Cube desktop feature through desktop settings and when I pressed the apply button the system crashed. The screen freezed and the laptop wasn't responding to anything.
So I rebooted the laptop and now every time gets stack in the green screen and trying to load but it never does. I suspect that it has to do with my ATI card because a couple of 3d games would crash the system too. I tried some solutions that I found here like disabling the desktop effects by tweaking kwinrc file but it didn't worked.
Does anyone know how to disable that Cube feature from failsafe mode?

I have created a file .lircrc in my home share and added the following
begin
remote = mceusb
button = Home
prog = irexec
repeat = 0
config = /usr/share/applications/XBMC Media Center

I attach a screen slot with he slots circled in red. Looking at other desktops posting on the forums I gather this is not normal but I cannot find what causes it.

Although I have been using Ubuntu for a while, I am still a beginner.This is the second time that it has happened to me and I am unable to find a possible solution in my books on Linux and Ubuntu.Twice I have downloaded updates from Update Manager which required a reboot. Each time I have rebooted,terminal window has opened. I am unable to get out of terminal to the desktop or to enter any other program ( like office,etc). I know that the graphics are still in place as The Ubuntu 10.10 screen flashes on before the terminal black screen appears.(I am in runlevel 2 )A. How can I get out of terminal and onto desktop?

My wallpaper, regardless of what is chosen, flashes to blue/green (like an old Win95 desktop color) every 10-15 seconds. It stays that way for a second, then goes back to what is set. Also, it seems to 'fade in' to the blue/green, then fades back to the chosen wallpaper (albeit a very fast fade). Icons on the desktop are unaffected.I've tried disabling all desktop effects, and it still does it. The only way to stop it is to reboot, which seems to fix the problem for 24 hours or so, then it starts again.

I have a Acer Aspire D250 the new ones that comes with the win 7 starter kit.
When I try to install or just even try to load from the live CD from Ubuntu 9.10 or Ubuntu 9.10 remix the logo come up and screen goes black. I'm using a 4gig Sanddisk cruzer and I formated to fat32.
Is it an option that I need to change into the bios? do you think I really need to use a external DVD to install it?
I tried to find a solution on google but can't find anything

I have an Acer Aspire One AOA110 that came with Windows XP.
I created a usb flash drive install for Ubuntu 10.10 netbook edition and went through the install process (wiped disk clean, not a dual boot with WINXP).
Before install, I was able to run Ubunut from the usb key with no problems.
At the end of the install, it told me I needed to restart, so I clicked the "restart" button and the removed the usb drive. Nothing happened and it never restarted and just completley hung for about 20 minutes. I manually shut down the computer by holding the power for 10 seconds and then rebooted the machine. Now all I get after the "acer bios" screen is a black screen with a blinking cursor. If I press any buttons, the computer beeps at me.

With the default settings made by the installation of 11.3, I had, upon booting, an ugly screen showing green geko with a bar to show progress. Upon shutdown, there was this really neat screen showing the shut down process transparently on the SUSE splash screen. In the menu.lst file, there were the settings
Code:
SPLASH=SILENT QUIET
I wanted to have the boot process show transparently, the process on the splash screen. Possibly even change the underlying screen.

When Debian 6 (amd 64, testing) is loaded, before desktop appears, for a while, the screen is black and three strange green rows appear. Then, all is ok and I can see a normale desktop and start to use Debian. So, an error in video config could be possible. Linked to this fact (I think) , there is the impossibility to modify the resolution screen (that is fixed to 1024x768) and the refresh frequency. I've tried to find "xorg.conf" in order to modify it like various guides suggest me, but this file is not present.
