Feb 13, 2011version 10.04.copy and pasted something into terminal and now the theme selection menu always pops up at the login screen, how do i get rid of that?

Ubuntu :: Freezes As Soon As The Login Screen Pops Up
Jul 8, 2010I just updated my netbook remix 9.10 to 10.04 and every time I boot up it freezes as soon as the login screen pops up. Before this said screen pops up I have the ability to move the cursor around freely, and if I mash the life out of enter I can get it to select my username, but freezes before the password entry bar has the chance to come up under it.

May 4, 2011After a lot of headache and time I was finally able to get Ubuntu 11.04 64bit installed along side my Windows 7 64bit installation. The whole process was hindered by the screen resolution being really off, looked like this LINK (aspect ratio of (16:10) I believe it was). After much fiddling i was able to get the installation started hoping that in the end it would let me set the res. correctly once it was installed. About 75% of the way done it threw an error saying there was either a problem with the HDD or the CD, I know my HDD is fine, so I booted up windows and set up my USB thumb drive as the installation device, Unbootable.
My next attempt i hooked the laptop to my internet via cable and started the installation again, this time i found that I could set the res of the LiveCD (which was a pain in the neck) and this time Ubuntu installed and upgraded and seemed all sorts of happy! Once the PC rebooted and i selected to boot into Ubuntu, the(what i suppose is) login screen pops up but the resolution is messed up again and this time I can't navigate at all. I've tried just typing in my password and hitting enter as i can see that it is by default selecting my user name to login with.

Jun 3, 2011i am having a boot problem with opensuse.i installed a theme named suse-elegant under personal settings(configure desktop)-system administration-login screen.
i had also added vbox users(i ticked vboxusers) under yast-security and users-user and group management-edit-details to make virtual box work.
i want to check that installed theme so i restarted my laptop.after the restart opensuse taking too long time to boot
note:the login theme also not working.
after the boot i restored defaults in login screen themes.it is also not working.
i don't know which cause this problem(vboxusers or login theme).i am also seeing a root user has been added in my login area.i tried opensuse failsafe also.

Clearlooks. So, I tried upgrading to Maverick, thinking it would default the login screen to the new themes. No such luck.

May 4, 2011For some reason, from time to time on login, as my normal theme starts to load, it changes to some sort of silver theme (a very basic one), and I am unable to change it over to any other theme. Checking the theme being used, it still says my desired one is set, but it is not. Also, no matter what theme I change it to, that basic silver theme is the one being used. This includes a default icon theme, not the one I prefer.
The only option that seems to fix things is a restart, and the hope that on this login it won't mess up like before.I am using Natty, from a fresh install, with Ubuntu Classic as my desktop, and have reinstalled things more than once to try and fix a few of the Natty-related issues, but this one keeps coming back.

Jun 6, 2011I can't seem to login into ubuntu this morning. I'm using 11.04 64 bit. It's been working fine for a few weeks, but this morning I select my name with the mouse and it just returns to the same initial screen after a millisecond. The password box does not come up.
The last thing I did yesterday was add another user - would that have caused any issues (or a red herring)?
I went to a terminal and deleted that user (sudo userdel -r <username>) but that hasn't helped.
Ubuntu Multimedia :: Drivers On Thinkpad T61 - Nvidia Splash Screen Pops Up
Aug 6, 2010It seems the latest nvidia drivers (255.44) don't seem to work on my Lenovo Thinkpad T61 in Lucid. Has anybody gotten it to work? I've tried to just use the System -> Drivers control panel to install and activate the current nvidia drivers as well as installing it from the command line. However, when I reboot, I see the nvidia splash screen come up for a second, then the screen goes blank, and then the nvidia splash screen pops up again, and then the screen goes blank again, over and over. It seems to be in some kind of infinite initialization loop. My T61 has the nvidia NVS 140m chipset. This is frustrating since the previous drivers seemed to work ok. When I try to revert to older drivers, it complains now that they're no longer compatible with the latest kernel headers, etc. I've had to boot up into the failsafe graphics mode to be able to use the laptop.

Feb 21, 2010I used KDE3 with 11.0 with some KDE4 apps till I needed some applications from the KDE4 factory tree and mistakenly left the repository active. Next time the online update also updated most of the applications I would rather keep, and as a result the KDE3 disappeared from the KDM login choices. So I have two questions:1. how to enable users to select KDE3 at login (currently I have to select failsafe mode and run startkde manually)2. how to replay back an update I didn't want to have?
Perhaps a combination of the above: can I upgrade to OS11.2 and keep KDE3? (please don't tell me to switch to KDE4, I acknowledge and appreciate the effort and the improvements that KDE4 got, but it's still not a replacement for KDE3 - there are so many simple things which are impossible in the new version)
Software :: Selection Buffer Sending Text Before Completing Selection?
Jun 18, 2010How can I change the behavior of the selection buffer or a program that uses it ( I have xclip) to not send me text until the mouse button is released while clicking and dragging? This causes havok in the software I'm developing that tries to make use of the selection buffer. I need the full selection, not bits more bits more bits and then the full selection.EDIT: I cannot listen for mouse events such as button release outside of the GUI of my program.

May 3, 2010First let me describe my system setup. I have windows, ubuntu 64 and ubuntu 32 present. I upgraded the 32 bit version to 10.4 with no problem. After upgrading the 64 bit version is when the problem occurred. I believe it has to do with the grub.cfg file. When I would choose the 64 bit version the screen would just go black, no furthur action. After making a few changes to the 64 bit selection in grub.cfg i come to a screen that says c to continue, s to skip mounting, and m for manual mount. Pressing s gets me in. Here is a copy of my grub.cfg.

Ubuntu Installation :: Skip Grub OS Selection Screen
Feb 17, 2011Im using the following system setup: When I boot my business computer, I can choose between 3 setups, 2 Windows XP, 1 DOS. I installed Ubuntu with 1 Windows XP system which looks something like this:
System 1 (XP)
System 2 (XP) --> after selection, Im able to choose between the XP system and Ubuntu on a new screen
System 3 (DOS)
Now interesting for me is obviously System 2. After I select System 2, I can choose between XP and Ubuntu. After I select Ubuntu, I come to another screen, where I can choose again between 4 Ubuntu entries with different kernel versions (including their recovery modes) AND both XP systems (yes, again). I installed Grub Customizer. I removed all the XP entries and all but 1 Ubuntu entry from this screen. I also set the timeout until booting Ubuntu on this screen to 1 second to start as quick as possible and Ubuntu boots fine.
My question now is, is there a way to skip the screen with former kernel and XP selection and boot Ubuntu directly after already choosing (between XP and Ubuntu) on the first screen? I know, 1 second "waiting" is not too bad but skipping the screen completly would be superb.

May 15, 2011I downloaded Ubuntu 11.04 yesterday. The ISO allowed me to install Ubuntu using Wubi and it worked just fine in Windows (I used a virtual drive to mount the ISO). I liked it enough to want to replace Linux Mint on the Laptop with it.After a LOT of trying, I was finally able to make the liveUSB of Ubuntu 11.04 32-bit version.[URL]isplays the boot menu and if I select 'try Ubuntu without installing', I am greeted with a blank screen which just does not go away until I hard reboot the system. Also, the grub I am getting is NOT the purple one which usually is the default; instead, its a dark screen with a black-n-white titled Ubuntu logo. So the question of using the NOMODESET doesn't arise at all. I am using Dell XPS 15 with dual OSes - Linux Mint and Windows 7. Both Mint and 7 are 64-bit OSes but I am trying to install Ubuntu 11.04 32-bit version.

Apr 12, 2011My last setup (years ago) ran fluxbox so because it was familiar I installed it as a secondary to xfce right off the bat. I download a lot of different stuff because I like to try out all the apps I can find but somewhere I broke something. I can still run fluxbox fine, but nither the Xubuntu nor Xfce sessions will run now. Last thing I remember changing was pulse audio(removed it for an experiment I was trying with jack audio), not sure if it is connected but when I try to login to xfce the screen goes black, flickers a few times then it brings me back to the login screen.
I tried failsafe but everytime I do my monitor gives me a "frequency out of range" error. I tried purging and reinstalling xubuntu desktop and xfce settings but I am thinking its my xorg config. My laptop is a Toshiba satellite M305D-s4830 with ATI Radeon 3100 mobile graphics card and I am running Xubuntu 10.10. Unfortunately I also broke the screen, so right now I am stuck with an external monitor till I get a new one.

Apr 3, 2011I'm moving from Ubuntu to Fedora 13 and note,to my delight, that ICEWM is an option. I much prefer that, or Joe's WM to the biggies like Gnome or KDE.the problem is how do I select ICEWM? I feel sorta stupid here. I see nothing on the menus or the control panel which applies and the splash screen is devoid of a selection. That leaves the command line. Have I missed something?Is there no GUI to do this with? How do I change to ICEWM?

May 20, 2011I have installed Debian a few times now (and other distro's), so I'm fairly used to installing linux. I'm not used to installing it on Apple hardware (back in 2009 on my laptop I had some issues that were solved rather quickly, but that's about it). Now I'm installing Debian Squeeze on a new (well, bought today, but it is the previous model: iMac 11,2) desktop iMac.
Installing goes well (resizing partition, rEFIt, booting Debian 6.0.1a netinstall CD, installing packages etc.) I followed a tutorial [URL] to install grub explicitly with force after installing and running gptsync. Everything went according to the tutorial and I rebooted to be welcomed by rEFIt and then grub: perfect!
BUT when I chose Debian in the grub-selection list, I only see a few lines of starting the kernel, and then my screen goes all black. A few seconds later I hear a sound, and iirc it's the sound of gdm prompting to select a user. I cannot switch to a TTY and I have to use the power-button to shut the system down.

Sep 17, 2010I have installed VirtualBox and setup a Windows Vista host, initially with a .vdi of 10gb. That filled up quickly, so I added another 20gb secondary partition, after first trying to allocate a .vdi to a SCSI controller. Configured the drive in Windows (Computer Management), and all seemed ok. I shutdown VB, and rebooted my Linux host (openSuse 11.3). Now I keep bouncing back to the login screen, and can't login to Linux KDE, but can login to a console.I do have the following info:

I did see a message before, that I don't see anymore, that said it could not start NFS services due to missing entry in fstab. Another I'm seeing now is it couldn't start the avahi-daemon, no space left on device. This is odd, since I have a 200GB drive, with half of it left, only max 30GB set to VB. Here's my df -k output:
/dev/sda6 Use% is 100%
devtmpfs Use% is 1%
tmpfs Use% is 1%
/dev/sda7 Use% is 46%
So root "/" is mounted on /dev/sda6, which looks like it could be a problem, but why would this suddenly be a problem after working with VirtualBox? Could this be a matter of just freeing up space on /dev/sda6? Like the /tmp folder that's under "/"?
Ubuntu :: Cant Login Into Hardy...Screen Hangs Up At Login Screen?
Dec 22, 2008I have a desktop running Hardy and till friday it was running good. Today is monday and I guess it has got monday blues like I get every monday at work.Today I tried to start it as usual but it just refused to go further than login screen. I just can not login. It just hangs it there. I do not know what has gone wrong. I did not change anything since friday and no one else uses it. Theres nothing in logs that could give any idea. It just hangs without any reason and is still on the login screen for ever. It does ask my username and password but then it does not go further.But to my surprise I tried logging in with root and it gave me expected error that system administrator is not allowed to login from gnome.

Apr 11, 2011I am very new at Ubuntu, I only recently changed over from windows cause my computer was infested with a bagillion viruses. I have been trying to customize all my displays and I found a bunch of theme's for my login screen at the gnome web page, but i cant figure out how to implement them. It took me long enough to figure out how to change my desktop, but it seems there is no easy way to change the login screen. I got Ubuntu tweak, but that only allows you to change the background and the button, I was hoping to find a way to use the ones downloaded from the web. Does anyone know hpow to easily apply a gnome theme to your ubuntu login screen/boot menu?
