Sep 6, 2010After installing win7 I've lost the grub menu. I tried live cd and reset it. Bu I couldn' t. When I write find /boot/grub/menu. it's write (hd0,1). how can I reset the grub menu?

OpenSUSE Install :: Computer Won't Boot From Hdd Or Boot Disc
Aug 5, 2010I have been having a problem with my 11.1 recently, in that it gets stuck at a point in the boot process that tells me "INIT cannot execute /bin/sh" then it says "INIT: id 1 is respawning too fast please wait 5 minutes" and tells me there are no more preocesses in this runlevel and repeats this no matter how long I wait. Since I couldnt find any information on fixing that, I decided to just upgrade to 11.3 with a boot disc. Now my computer wont recognize the disc to boot from it and still gets stuck at the same screen.

Jan 25, 2010Well, in first place let me tell you that my HDD boot sector or i dont know what is damaged, so to boot i made a boot usb with the grubdos utility, so anytime i want to boot in win7 i have to plug my usb and select win7 from it.Today i finished downloading the opensuse iso, then i mounted the image with poweriso and initialized the install, and it asked me to restart my computer, after that when i boot from my usb pendrive it goes directly to the opensuse install, but it just showme the blackscreen and nothing happens.

Jan 31, 2011I've recently begun using PING (Partimage is not Ghost) imaging software, and it works great with other Linux distros. Upon my first use on openSUSE, I found that I could not restore the image onto another computer. After a successful restoration of the image, I get: "Could not find /dev/mapper/isw_ddedgibjfd_ARRAY_part2 Want to fall back to /dev/mapper/isw_ddedgibjfd_ARRAY_part2? (Y/n)" during the first boot. I don't know what to do, I've tried taking multiple images, and restoring them on multiple computers, but I always get the same error.

Jan 6, 2011it started with rooting my Motorola Droid. I got quite interested in the whole rooting/linux "world". The only problem is, my hands move A LOT faster than my brain does. I'm an "educated novice" at best when it comes to all of this and still learning slowly, but surely. I followed an online tutorial and before I realized quite what i'd done, I had dual installed Ubuntu linux 10.10 on my laptop. ISO'd this, partitioned that and realized....i'm in way over my head. Then I started researching how to just go back in time and get my "safe" windows vista back until I'm ready to make the switch to linux and just ended up getting more confused.
How do I actually BOOT into Windows on a dual boot computer that I apparently just created? How, if need be, do I undo everything I just did in the past few hours and careless tinkering? If I decide to stay with Linux, how do I get my damn wireless router to recognize?

Jan 21, 2011I'm new to the principle of network boot and I was wondering if this is possible. Computer A runs openSUSE. Computer B is an older, slower computer. Computer A and computer B are connected using an Ethernet cable that supports two-way transport. Can I use network boot on computer B to use the OS on computer A remotely while computer A is being used too? Does it involve RDP? Will the remote user experience noticeable lags/delays? What do I need to install on computer A to make this happen?

Dec 17, 2009I had put a second Sata hard drive in my computer and was pleasantly surprised not to run into any problems. No BIOS changes, just start the partitioner, partition, mount, it worked.And then... my computer didn't boot today.I disconnected the new hard drive and it went a little bit further, allowing me to log in as root and remove some lines in /etc/fstab. After that, it booted without any issues.I then remembered that the new drive was /dev/sda and the old drive /dev/sdb. I assume this is the reason for not booting, there is no GRUB on /dev/sda. How do I fix this? Can I simply plug in the cable for the new drive where the cable for the old drive was?

Ubuntu :: Dual-booting - Can't Boot From CD - Install Through Hard Drive Into Another Computer
Jan 9, 2011I have a laptop with two partitions, one with Windows XP and one for storage (formatted in NTFS). I would like to install Ubuntu on the storage partition, but my problem is that I can't boot from CD (or anything else) because my BIOS is password protected. I obviously don't know the password. y question is: If I plug the laptop's hard drive into another computer, install Ubuntu as described above and then reconnect it to my laptop, will it work?

Jul 22, 2010At the moment I've got dual-bootable machine with WinXP (25GB on hard disk) and openSUSE 11.2 (20GB on hard disk). After saving the important files on my ~/home I want to wipe off all data from both my partitions and then install WinXP (with 15GB) and openSUSE 11.2 with 30GB. The problem is I'm not sure how to go about doing this? I'm guessing the problem will be the boot process. I installed openSUSE on a machine that already had WinXP and I didn't change any boot settings so it must still be controlled by XP. So presumably I'd have to:
1. Remove openSUSE first and then remove XP using the XP CD.
2. Install XP again
3. Install openSUSE on another partition as I did before but with different partition sizes.
Or should I install openSUSE first before XP? I think I'm more confident on installing XP first since I've already done it earlier. The only other complication is that this is my 'laptop' screen is broken so I use an external monitor. This is what prevented me from formatting my computer earlier.

Fedora Installation :: 15 Post Install Boot - Computer Hangs Before Grub Loads
Jun 5, 2011I performed a clean install of Fedora 15 from DVD and it goes fine until the end when the install program says to reboot the computer. Once I do that, the computer hangs before Grub loads, i.e. just after all of the BIOS messages, so there isn't any error message to indicate what is wrong. I had no issues with Fedora 14.

Aug 7, 2009i can't seem to get a fresh install to boot on a Acer Aspire T160 desktop computer, after the install finishes (basic install, command line only) it gets past 'Verifying DMI Pool.......' but then nothing, it just hangs, no Grub messages, nothing. Here is my hardware/config
Proc: Sempron 3200
Mem: 512 MB
/dev/hda1 110GB / Bootable
/dev/hda2 4GB Swap
/dev/md0 150GB /home
/dev/sda1 RAID
/dev/sdb1 RAID
i have tried RAID1 and RAID0 for md0, no change, i've also disconnected the raid all together and just installed on the IDE drive, still nothing. I noticed the BIOS supports hardware RAID but i have that disabled from past experiences and opting for software raid instead. i've gone through 'linux rescue' and reinstalled Grub, rebuilt raids and checked disks.
an interesting thing happens tho if i just have the IDE drive plugged in and nothing else... i get a BIOS message asking to plug in a bootable disk, does this mean it doesn't see my linux install at all? doesn't know to pass the boot along to /dev/hda?
i'm running out of ideas, tho neither have i tried installing to the raid... nor have i tried any other distros (Fedora, Ubuntu) on this machine yet.

Hardware used: MSI X58 Eclipse, Intel i7-920, 6 GB memory, Seagate 500 GB SATA.
openSUSE is the only OS installed.
After the install is finished, all programs work fine. HOWEVER when I try to shut down/restart the computer nothing happens! I basically have to use the power off button to shut down...

Feb 13, 2011I want to do an apparently simple task but since I migrated to Opensuse I found no way to do it. I have an enhanced install of Opensuse 11.3, where I added softwares from different sources according to my needs. Now that it's working fine I would like to make the same kind of install for two friends of mine and for a virtual machine on Virtualbox. In Ubuntu I used remastersys and in few minutes it created a live DVD with all the content of my system, and all of this offline, without downloading anything else. In Opensuse the only resources that most resemble that are Kiwi and Suse Studio.
But it seems that in both the softwares must be downloaded from repositories online. That would not work for me because it would take a very long time to find out all the packages I installed, from what repositories and my internet connection is very slow so I could not do it all at once. I tried Clonezilla but I was not able to restore the content of my Opensuse partition to a different machine. It gave me error messages, didn't make the restore and I didn't find a solution anywhere online. How can I transfer the content of my Opensuse installation to another computer without having to use online resources?

Dec 21, 2009When my computer is going down for hibernation (ram2disk) he safes the session corretly to the disk and the statusbar reaches 100%, but the computer and screen leaves on. Maybe some acpi troubles?
It is just that the computer won't switch off so that I have to press the OnButton 3sec. When I start again the session is sucessfully restored.

Feb 13, 2010It is my first try getting Linux on my pc which is an Acer Aspire Z5610. This is not the first time for me when I am getting an Kernel Panic error on this computer.
I looked up google hoping to find an answer and I found out that it may be my BIOS's fault. I currently have Windows 7 on this PC. I have a Phoenix BIOS and there is an update for it called "Bios Linux" on the official Acer support website.
OK, after this short introduction, that's the error:
I really hope to get support for this problem as I can not literally install any other OS to this PC than Windows 7 because they fail with Kernel Panic.
Tried other Linux Editions and even Mac OS Intel Edition and IAtkos V1 and V7 and they all give kernel panic.
