Ubuntu :: Update Manager Lists Items That Never Get Updated 8.04 LTS?

I am running 8.04 LTS on a Dell Inspiron 1525. Update Manager lists a bunch of items that just stay there forever - they never update, they never go away and the check boxes cannot even be checked.
Alot of these are "language-pack-gnome-xxx" updates. I also have one "skype" update that never goes away and can't be checked.Something's wrong and I don't know how to fix it.I want to eventually upgrade the entire OS but I am afraid to do so if my system has problems. I want the update manager window to be completely empty. I want these items to actually update or go away.
I don't have a degree in computer science so please be easy on me when it comes to terminal commands.I tried searching for this problem and, although I'm sure the topic has come up before, I can't seem to find a set of search terms that puts the topic within the top 10 results.

This happened completely randomly. One day, my synaptic and update manager is working fine and the next day, I open one of them and get a error window that doesn't say anything (no details on the error). So, i tried the terminal, sudo apt-get update, and this message shows:
Reading package lists... Error!
E: Problem parsing dependency Depends
E: Error occurred while processing lib�tartup-notificamion0-dev (NewVersion1)
E: Problem with MergeList /var/lib/apt/lists/archive.ubuntu.com_ubuntu_dists_karmic_main_binary-i386_Packages
E: The package lists or status file could not be parsed or opened.

I am running Ubuntu 11.04. But now whenever I click 'Check' in my UpdateManager, it always said 'No update found' But the UpdateManager said 'The package information was last updated less than one hour ago.'
How can I fix it?

i updated both browsers i have and lost my secure log-in pages (no padlocks showing ) concerning different Web mail accounts.Just before i did these updates i checked an unrelated thing on-line regarding my sound card of which i kept a copy of and got this message below :

I just used the on-line update to upgrade from 11.3 to 11.4. Now when I click the computer button in lower left, there are no entries under system, ie. control center, yast, install, lock, logout, shutdown. How do I get those back?

I am having issues with Update Manager after cancelling an Update.The Update Manager shows a number of required updates, but when I click on Install Updates... I've noticed an issue since the last 10.10 update with the network manager applet. When I first start gnome, the network manager works fine. However after some length of time or trigger that I don't fully understand yet, it ceases to function any more. None of the menu items respond. The issue does not seem to be with the actual networking system as I can connect to the internet, ssh, etc fine. I can restart the applet like so:

/etc/init.d/NetworkManager restart
nm-applet
But it will eventually return. Is anyone else having this issue? I am running 10.10 on an Asus ul30a with Gnome

I am trying to update my system using synaptic but it always end with the error while reloading the package lists

I am using Debian squeeze amd64 gnome 2.30.2

Ubuntu 10.04 64 bit I have not been able to update using the update manager or by using the package manager. It seems when the update manager tries to download all the requests fail.Anyone else had this problem??

Is it possible to somehow open Nautilus file manager, or favorites, or places items using hotkey(s)? Simply going to the launcher just to open the file manager is annoying, and I'd really find it convenient to somehow launch the Nautilus using hotkey(s)

It started with Update Manager constantly recycling and not updating. When it starts it shows 295 files and 308MB waiting to download. When I click on 'Install Updates' it appears to go through the process, and then presents me with the same 'waiting to install' window again - and again, and again - in fact as many times as I care to click the 'Install Updates' button. No error messages appear. The 'Settings' button produces the same apparent process as the 'Install Updates' button, but doesn't present me with any other screen.
I've tried all the solutions I could find on these forums and nothing works. The sudo suggestions for Terminal usually produce error codes. adjusting a line in the 'hosts' file. When I tried this I was presented with the obstacle of not having access to the read-only file, and no matter how much I searched I couldn't find how to gain access . While investigating all these possible solutions, I was directed in turn to the Software Sources and Synaptic Package Manager applications, but when I attempted to start them, 'Starting Administrative Application' appeared briefly on the taskbar - and then disappeared!

After a fresh install of Ubuntu 9.10-64bit I don't have Hardware Manager, Update Manager or Software Resources just to name a few.I tried sudo apt-get update & sudo apt-get upgrade & everything is up to date.

Update Manager and Packet Manager do not work.
Ubuntu Software Center is also affected.

i know i have been having a lot of problems, but i keep having more this time, i ran update manager, and noticed that i was getting a new image, but i quickly forgot this. then, while installling the updates, it asked me if i wanted to keep my old menu.lst. i told it to keep my old one, since it worked fine. it then told me that i needed to restart, so i did. it got to where it would normally start loading grub, but my computer wouldn't go any farther. (would not load grub) i would think that it would still load my old image. i am writing this while running a liveUSB.
i ran the boot info script, and attached its output. i know this should be posted under installation&upgrades, but general help seems to be much more active. because of this, my father doesn't want me updating any more.

Ok so I having the same issue as everyone else but it still exists despite the solutions other people are experiencing. Update manager, synaptic, and apt-get are not working no aptitude on here. Update manager says: An unresolvable problem occurred while initializing the package information. report this bug against the 'update-manager' package and include the following error message: 'E:Encountered a section with no Package: header, Eroblem with MergeList /var/lib/apt/lists/us.archive.ubuntu.com_ubuntu_dists_natty_universe_ i18n_Translation-en%5fUS, E:The package lists or status file could not be parsed or opened.' apt-get has errors with headers, finding files, and wrong file types. I have gone to a couple locations and the files exist and the hash is correct, and the file types are correct. I have tried replacing the sources file. I have tried sudo rm -r /var/lib/apt/lists sudo apt-get clean sudo apt-get update with the same problem happening upon updating. In the same exact areas.
