OpenSUSE Install :: Reformat Computer And Install 11.2?

Jul 22, 2010

At the moment I've got dual-bootable machine with WinXP (25GB on hard disk) and openSUSE 11.2 (20GB on hard disk). After saving the important files on my ~/home I want to wipe off all data from both my partitions and then install WinXP (with 15GB) and openSUSE 11.2 with 30GB. The problem is I'm not sure how to go about doing this? I'm guessing the problem will be the boot process. I installed openSUSE on a machine that already had WinXP and I didn't change any boot settings so it must still be controlled by XP. So presumably I'd have to:

1. Remove openSUSE first and then remove XP using the XP CD.
2. Install XP again
3. Install openSUSE on another partition as I did before but with different partition sizes.

Or should I install openSUSE first before XP? I think I'm more confident on installing XP first since I've already done it earlier. The only other complication is that this is my 'laptop' screen is broken so I use an external monitor. This is what prevented me from formatting my computer earlier.

Thanks.

OpenSUSE Install :: Can't Reformat Encrypted Filesystem?

Mar 2, 2010

I have an encrypted filesystem that I've decided I don't want encrypted anymore. Seems the easiest way to do this is simply reformat the filesystem, but I can't. If I try to do it in YaST2 I get either system error code -3005 (unknown) or -3008 (apparently in use). When I try to do it from the command line I get:

Code:
frylock:/home/joel # umount /dev/sdb5
umount: /dev/sdb5: not mounted
frylock:/home/joel # mkfs -t ext4 /dev/sdb5
mke2fs 1.41.9 (22-Aug-2009)
/dev/sdb5 is apparently in use by the system; will not make a filesystem here!
frylock:/home/joel #

It's unmounted, I don't know how to make it any less in use than that.I can't delete the partition because it's not the last logical partition in the extended partition.

Ubuntu :: Reformat The Entire Hard Drive And Install It?

Feb 7, 2010

I have a little experience using Ubuntu with VMWare Fusion on my Mac, but that is about it. My girlfriend is running Windows Vista on an HP Pavilion tx 2000 laptop and she has been having all sorts of trouble with it. Needless to say Windows is eating the computer from the inside out so I recommended that she use Ubuntu, which means that I have to set everything up for her... So my question is how do I go about reformatting the entire hard drive and installing Ubuntu (or another Linux based OS recommended)?

Hardware used: MSI X58 Eclipse, Intel i7-920, 6 GB memory, Seagate 500 GB SATA.
openSUSE is the only OS installed.

After the install is finished, all programs work fine. HOWEVER when I try to shut down/restart the computer nothing happens! I basically have to use the power off button to shut down...

OpenSUSE Install :: How To Migrate 11.3 Installation To Another Computer

Feb 13, 2011

I want to do an apparently simple task but since I migrated to Opensuse I found no way to do it. I have an enhanced install of Opensuse 11.3, where I added softwares from different sources according to my needs. Now that it's working fine I would like to make the same kind of install for two friends of mine and for a virtual machine on Virtualbox. In Ubuntu I used remastersys and in few minutes it created a live DVD with all the content of my system, and all of this offline, without downloading anything else. In Opensuse the only resources that most resemble that are Kiwi and Suse Studio.

But it seems that in both the softwares must be downloaded from repositories online. That would not work for me because it would take a very long time to find out all the packages I installed, from what repositories and my internet connection is very slow so I could not do it all at once. I tried Clonezilla but I was not able to restore the content of my Opensuse partition to a different machine. It gave me error messages, didn't make the restore and I didn't find a solution anywhere online. How can I transfer the content of my Opensuse installation to another computer without having to use online resources?

OpenSUSE Install :: Getting A Kernel Panic Error On Computer

Feb 13, 2010

It is my first try getting Linux on my pc which is an Acer Aspire Z5610. This is not the first time for me when I am getting an Kernel Panic error on this computer.

I looked up google hoping to find an answer and I found out that it may be my BIOS's fault. I currently have Windows 7 on this PC. I have a Phoenix BIOS and there is an update for it called "Bios Linux" on the official Acer support website.

OK, after this short introduction, that's the error:

I really hope to get support for this problem as I can not literally install any other OS to this PC than Windows 7 because they fail with Kernel Panic.

Tried other Linux Editions and even Mac OS Intel Edition and IAtkos V1 and V7 and they all give kernel panic.

OpenSUSE Install :: Access Computer In Local Network?

Apr 3, 2010

The desktop computer stores most of our family's files and is mostly powered on, installed with Debian/openSUSE (KDE4).

We have 2 more portable (also Linux, KDE4) computers and frequently need to access files stored in the desktop. Currently file transferred is by usb thumbdrive which is troublesome.

The computers are all connected to a wireless router that provides access to the internet.

Reading/goolging and understand that there are many ways to share files to the extend that I am lost - Samba, NFS, SSH .....

My problem is to find out: What is the best way to access computers within the local network? "Best" here means:

- Secure

- Relative ease to setup

- Easy to use, file access with GUI (file manager?) as the entire family is using the computers.

OpenSUSE Install :: Change Computer Name / Dedicated Root Password

Dec 2, 2009

I don't know that this post fits here, nor does it fit in "Applications." installing suse doesn't seem to give you the chance to name your computer. Now my computer is called "linux-0qvi" or something strange like that. I want to name my computer. Can I do this now without screwing things up??

Also, during install, there didn't seem to be an opportunity to make a separate root password. My first (and main user) account is now set up with admin rights, so I have to type in my account password every time I do something as root. Can I set a separate dedicated root password without screwing up my system?
