Jan 25, 2011I had FC 14 installed on an SSD, and 4 500Gig drives in a software RAID-5 configuration. However, just recently, my FC14 failed horribly. Fortunately my admin had recently backed up the /etc directory. When FC14 failed, he reinstalled FC14 on the SSD. Is there any way for me to re-establish the RAID-5 drives, since they were not affected?

Mar 23, 201111.4 Boot Freeze That is there is a BUG: soft lockup - CPU#0 stuck message and the boot hangs.The modprobe/migration codes are not identical with the linked thread. I'm stuck with CPU#0 at [modprobe:138] and #1 stuck at [migration1:8]. Generally after 61 or 63s.
This is a zypper dup from latest 11.3.The machine boots with acpi=off, luckily. But I'd like to have it all working.The forum says I can't post attachments; hwinfo output seems a bit copious to quote inline. But I'd be happy to provide any additional info obviously.

Not doing anything special, just browsing the web and I get a few of these soft lockups. Cannot reboot, have to power it off and on when it happens. USB stops working also.

Fedora :: Gnome Soft On Small Monitor (netbook)
Oct 28, 2010I am using F13 on my netbook for a week so far. Its worth mention, I am completely new new to Linux. Want to say many thanks to Fedora developers for such a great OS, it makes me really happy.
Now, on the subject, I have a very small monitor 1024x576, this is causing difficulties with GIMP, and more, I found that GIMP is too much 'overfeatured' :-( . Searching on this forum , I found posts about 'Kolour' for KDE desktop. Maybe you can recommend a similar simple image editor for Gnome desktop? Crop/resize and pencil tool where i can pick up color and draw pixels will suffice most of the time.
Also I am using Firefox a lot and thought whether it possible to get a small feature , I will try to describe it: when the window is maximized I want to hide the window's header and menu, which would give me extra 40-50 pixels height to the contents of the window.
Yeah, I know I can hide navigation bar, but how then I will type the page location?
Fedora Installation :: Soft Linked Yum Cache For Upgrade Doesn't Work?
Jul 4, 2009I tried to upgrade to Leonidas from Cambridge, but didn't have enough space on the partition /, so I soft linked /var/cache/yum (or whatever) to a larger partition, but now the upgrade does not find the subdirectory called preupdate (it's there in the linked dir, checked). Is there any more sofisticated way around than changing parition sizes and copying and stuff?

Nov 4, 2010I've replaced Ubuntu 10.10 with F13 and can't connect to the Internet.
I'm using a WiFi connection to my router. I receive an IP address via DHCP. I can connect to the router's web configuration interface, 192.168.2.1. Same with my NAS web configuration interface.
I've also tried with Live CD (F13 and F14beta). Same thing: receive IP, connect to router's web interface, can't connect to Google.
As a check, I tried Ubuntu Live CD and I can connect to the Internet.
I've also tried F13 Live CD on my laptop. Can't connect to the Internet.

I want to install KDE from fedora 14 DVD as my internet connection is very slow. It was a failure when I tried pointing the yum.repos.d/fedora.repo file to DVD to install using yum. Should I create a repository like what we do in RHEL to configure yum server(How to do it in fedora ???) Or is there any other method to install KDE repository on my system.

Jun 13, 2009I know that there have been a lot of messages (with repo correction info posted) for yum updates after install; but I'm trying to do an internet install of F11 and I'm getting the same message. Obviously I can't change a yum.conf file for this -- but it does give one the option to edit the location.
The default location is: [URL].. There's one other big flaw with the internet install -- it writes HD partition changes to the disk right after you set up the partition scheme; shouldn't it wait until it knows it can connect to the repository?? I had to boot to a Ubuntu live dvd to get on here to post this. I'm definitely not saving time using the internet install option.
I got online last night and found some of the info. on the yum updates issue, with different mirrors or repositores. So what I tried changing for the default repo / metadata location, using the edit option is:
I changed the word metalink to mirrorlist. I changed https to http. I tried using http://mirror.liberty.edu/pub (etc) which is actually an rpm fusion mirror. I likewise tried http://mirrors.cat.pdx.edu (etc.) I gave up and went to bed, and this morning I just tried the http://download.fedora.redhat.com/pub/fedora/linux/releases/$releasever/Everything/$basearch/os/ (and I also tried the above redhat.com address substituting i386 for basearch and 11 for $releasever) -- no go with any of that. Same error message about cannot retrieve installer metadata.
All of the other messages I've seen on this issue have been about Yum updates; not installs. Hopefully the install DVD will show up in the next couple of hours; but I'd like to make this work if I can ??

Jun 14, 2009I work for AT&T and our Windows-centric workgroup is being tasked with supporting an app running on RedHat. To help my coworkers, I'm building a Fedora 11 VM that we can play with to familiarize ourselves with the UNIX environment.
Because of corporate network policies in place, my VM can't get access to the Internet.
Since we're AT&T employees, we're naturally using the korn shell on the production system. I'd like to install the korn shell on my VM. However, it doesn't appear to be part of the base fedora repository.
Is the korn shell available for Fedora? If so, how would I copy it to shiny media, mount it on my VM, and install it?

Jul 30, 2011I cannot boot into Ubuntu at all. I have two kernels installed, 2.6.35-28 and 2.6.35-30. The first thing that happened today was that I wasn't able to boot into the latter. I was shown the (in)famous "BUG: soft lockup - CPU#0 stuck for 61s". At this point I could still boot into the 2.6.35-28 kernel. But after shutting down and starting again an hour later, I got the same message when trying to boot into 2.6.35-28. I have tried leaving out the boot options "splash" and "quiet" on both kernels and also adding in "noapic". No combination helps. Needless to say, booting into recovery mode doesn't work either. Up until today, I have been able to boot into both kernels with no problems.

To know what software is there installed, I use "rpm -qa > outlist.txt".
But what files shall I (scp) copy ... to take away as much configuration files as possible ?
Let's start with "/etc/*.conf", of course ... but is this enough ?

Oct 26, 2010My Desktop assembled d101GGC motherboard having 3.00 Ht tech processor, locks and after 5-10 minutes, unlocks and shows kernel softlock CPU#0 for 412 seconds. for the last many days. since two days it now lags time in clock applet in panel, but is not hanging for soft lock, I set the date and time to "system clock uses UTC" or "synchronize date and time over network", my PC again started to soft lock.

Only way to get updated system now is install new one, and here i have a problem. After CD/ISO booting, installation looking for a mountd devices, etc. then i got statement that CPU stuck for x sec. The same statement appears every 20sec. I was trying it on other linux distr's they give the same error. I didn't overclocked my notebook, his temp is ok. I'm working on it few hours each day, it didn't overheat. Someone told me thats bug of 2.6.x kernel but I'm trying install new system with 3.16.x.
