I have just installed " partimage" partition imaging - I want to perform a FULL system back up - problem is I cannot find where this programme is sitting to be able to perform my back up .

I know that Norton Ghost can do it, and I think Clonezilla, and many other programs also.
But I was wondering whether a simple dd would work.
The basics would be something like this:
Boot the computer from a CD or USB containing a live Linux. Then:
dd if=/dev/hda1 of=/someExternalDisk/xp.img
where hda1 is an NTFS filesystem containing an XP system.
To restore,
dd if=/someExternalDisk/xp.img of=/dev/hda1
Obviously it needs a few other things to make it nice, like:
bs=2M,
pipe to gzip
zeroing the empty space before compressing,
But would the basic scheme work? I don't think dd cares what's in the partition, so it should work.
I have an Acer Aspire Netbook running a dual boot with Xp and Ubuntu Netbook Version (Lucid Lynx if I am not mistaken?) Anyway I plan on selling this netbook and I need to remove the Ubuntu Partition and go back to just a full Windows Xp partition with it's recovery partition also.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI have a problem that I can't login to SUSE in graphical mode. I get to the login prompt; enter my username and password; SUSE starts to do the login but then crashes back to the login prompt. Looking in /var/log/messages doesn't tell me anything useful. However, I noticed that my SUSE system partition is full (at 20 GB). So I think this is the culprit that is stopping my login.
Unfortunately, I can't extend my system partition as it is ext4 (SUSE default) but parted (from SUSE 11.2 live cd) complains that it can't do anything with ext4.

KDE 4.3.5
Linux 2.6.31.14-0.1-desktop
Currently, my disk layout is: 20GB(windows-ntfs) / 250GB data-ext4 / 20GB ubuntu-ext4 / 4gb swap
Since I no longer use windows, I want to move ubuntu to the first place.
What do I need to change in configuration files, grub and anywhere else?
Shoudl I keep swap where it is or move it, too?
Sometimes you get more than you ask for and in this case, I did: I had no idea (had the computer for a few years now) that I was running a dual core 64 bit machine. The silly thing is that I have 32bit Fedora 11 on it, 32 bit versions of all my installed software...etc., etc. Am I able at this point to salvage anything or is it best to just back up the home directory and then do a reinstall?

I never reinstalled windows so could I do a system restore (in windows)to go back and then reinstall 1 partition of ubuntu net book remix.

"The bootloader is installed on a partition that does not lie entierly below 128 gb. The system might not boot if BIOS support only lba24(result is error 18 during install grub MBR)"
What should I do before click next step to install? I installed opensuse with this error and some times opensuse can boot and some not. At least I was able to boot safemode.
So I tried adding a new, 2nd hard drive to my Ubuntu 9.04 desktop for some additional storage and only managed to kill my system so that it won't boot up anymore (I just get a blinking cursor after the BIOS does its thing).I could sure use a little help getting back to a functioning system, and then adding the second drive. I tried following the instructions from this link to add the 2nd drive:

Suddenly Ubuntu goes into low-graphics mode the last couple of days I have had to reboot my Ubuntu-workstation when the screen suddenly goes black. After some seconds I get a pop-up with the message: Ubuntu is running in low-graphics mode. There is some buttons that tells me I can do different things but whatever I do I end up loosing all windows I worked in earlier. And having to reboot to get back full resolution [URL].
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have just upgraded to lucid and the first thing that I noticed was that the different shutdown options (Logout, Restart etc.) disappeared from the user-switch menu (at least that's how I think it is called) where they were located previously under karmic. Logout and Shutdown are placed under the System menu currently, and they work fine, but my question is how to show all (or some) of the shutdown options in the System or user menu? I dislike going through the dialog and prefer to choose my action directly from the menu.I have tried removing and readding the user-switch applet, to no avail. I tried adding menu items to both the system menu and the user menu, to no avail either

View 1 Replies View RelatedI initially installed SuSe11.2 with /tmp mounted on separate partition on another physical disk( there are two physical disks). Now I want to attach disk with existing SuSe11.2 to another motherboard so I would like that /tmp becomes part of the root partition. Will deleting /tmp mount point in /etc/fstab create automatically new /tmp from root at next startup, or something else has to be done to achieve, that in future, /tmp resides on root partition instead? In this way it would be much easier to move the disk with SuSe11.2 to another motherboard.

I've been using Physocats tutorial as my basis, however there is one item that seem odd: after the fdisk -l, a mkdir /backup is created; then the mount of hda5 where the backup will reside. To me, this seems backwards.
In any respect, what I'm trying to accomplish is to backup my main drive (sda1) to another (sdc1). After coming from Ghost and Windows, I've forgotten much of my limited command line knowledge. This mounting,unmount, fstab and mtab has me ready to go back to pen and paper!!
I'm dual booting - windows7 and Ubuntu 11.04. I've found that I'm doing a lot less "dual'n" lately though. Compaq Presario Notebook. I've been installing new software and I've noticed that some of them are not showing up in the App list. I'm showing 92 when I've actually downloaded more. They aren't showing in the Installed Software either, but when I go into the center to make sure I did install it, it says installed. So, I'm guessing there is something simple I'm not familiar with yet to make these programs show up. I installed 7zip and couldn't find it either, however when I click on a zip file to unzip it, it does use this to unzip. I cannot find Ruby-full install or Docky. Plus several others.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI have a 16gb flash drive with system rescue cd installed, I boot to it and run partimage. I'm trying to image an NTFS HDD. I would like to save it to the empty space on the flash drive but I'm unable to locate it in the file manager.
It's not under /dev/sdb1 or /livemnt/boot. The entire flash drive has been partitioned to be used by sysrescueCD.
So I reinstalled ubuntu on my laptop, but my partition is full while it isn't. I launch baobab, it says I got 4.48 GB free of 60GB while there are only 27GB files on my partition. Here is my partition set-up if it's useful:
-PQSERVICE 12GB free 3.52GB
-DRIVE 1 142GB free 25GB
-DRIVE 2 71GB free 28GB

I have a total of four partitions on my Ubuntu 9.10 (Karmic) system:
sda1 = /boot
sda2 = /

My boot partition is 94 MiB which I was recommended would be more than enough space. Turns out my /boot partition is full and I now get a message every time I log into Ubuntu saying, 'The volume "boot" has only 0 bytes disk space remaining.' Also after installing GParted to check up on my partitions I got the following error in apt-get:

I have no experience messing around in my /boot partition besides modifying GRUB. I think most likely I just have too many kernel versions installed in the /boot partition?
I few months ago I was forced to do a fresh clean install of Karmic becasue my root partition (then 80 GB) was full. I shooulkd have used a LiveCD to resize partitions then but I didn't so when I installed Karmic this time I ended up with a 160GB partition for /.Color me surprised when last night I got a message that / was at less than 5% free space.
1. I routinely do a apt clean so the cache is not an issue.
2. I do not store backups on /. I use rsnapshot to same backup on an external hard drive.
3. I use Virtualbox but all my hard drives (VDI) are on /home.

Why partition home is full
On a previous thread, I explained how I installed Fedora 14 from the live image disk onto a HP 2140 netbook only to find I was missing the development files. Stoat helped me use the more complete install DVD from Fedora 14 to install the development tools (rather than doing a complete reinstall -- which I would do if it made this work).
Unfortunately, I'm still unable to make PartImage 0.6.9 install. When I try, configure says that the bzip2 library (libbz2) is not found or too old. Apparently, this is because it can't get it to respond to BX2_bzopen from within the library. I think because it can't find the library. Inside the config.log file it seems to indicate that from an -lbz2 not found. Now I'm guessing that there is some trick to this, maybe some way of setting the library path to include the location of this and possibly other libraries under Fedora 14. I've checked the library's location and it seems to be in /lib as far as I can tell and bz2 does work, so it's somewhere. Of course it's possible since PartImage is pre-version 1 but doesn't have much if any activity on its forum that something has changed position in Fedora and the install isn't looking for it in the right place.
I've seen one blurb in the PartImage files that indicates that maybe using env to set environment variables on entrance to configure might work, but I'm not sure what variable to set or how to make it find the bz2 library. Note that I've been a UNIX user and administrator in the past, but that was in the System 7 days so that's rusty and I have no prior experience with LINUX of any kind.
Used the ubuntu software center to download partimage-doc, then tried to find it with the search function using the word part. Three files showed up in one section but not partimage-doc. How do I find it? I want to read about the program to decide whether to download it.

I have my / partition on an SSD that I formatted in ext3 but I now realise that, in order to use TRIM, I need to be ext4. Can I use Partimage to make and image of the partition, format it (using GParted) and then restore the image? Basically, do Partimage files survive a filesystem change?

I mount /home on its own partition that it is 20GB wide.I used 8GB in /home/b. /home contains just /home/federico & /home/lost+found (which appears to be empty).Strangely the partition appears to be full. I kept deleting files (and deleting also the Trash) but after I while my partition was full again.I do not use a swap file on this partition.
