i built a rpm package, which i figured out later that i wont be needing, so i deleted the rpm file and also the build package put together they were abt 5.8 GB... but my system monitor shows that only 700MB of space is available the 5.8 GB is not visible but its gone
View 9 RepliesI had been copying "vmkd" files all of which are very large (11gig) each and later deleted them and it appears some I had deleted using "root" I reached a point when it couldn't do it and it said it couldn't because trash bin was full. Sure enough I found my root partition (20gigs) was full. I went root and emptied its trash bin which freed up about (4gigs) of space. I just set up a new system (11.2) on another drive and have setup it up with exactly the same programs as the system I'm having a problem with and the new systems root partition only has (6gigs) in the root partition. Question; how do I clean out my problem root partition?

Please contact your computer administrator."a few times, and it turns out to be because of low disk space. No worry, I empty the trash uninstall unneeded programs and clean out the downloads folder that filled up my disk. And all is ok. But not this time.Since I can't use X, I delete stuff from the terminal, and also make sure to clean out the .Trash in both /home and /root. But still the disk is full. I delete more stuff, but it doesn't even seem to go to .Trash. It disappears, but no more disk space.

sda8 /SUSE 11.2I then made some changes with gparted (from PartedMagic 5.5) to create an ntfs partition to simulate a condition where someone may want to delete that partition and use the free space for linux. I then deleted that partition, sda2 then sda5 (swap) and taking some screenshots, went about resizing partitions to use that free space and then recreate swap. the intention being to create a basic guide on how to go about this.I have previously only had my swap at the end of the extended partition, deleting itand recreating it later had caused little trouble.I realize that a resize/move operation would have been a better choice.What I was not expecting was the partition number changes that occurred.

Got problems with apt. So I discovered if I remove some stuff from root partition apt works normally again.
So I tested to copy 1GB file to root, but in the middle says disk is full, but there should be 1.8GB free if I type df -h.

I few months ago I was forced to do a fresh clean install of Karmic becasue my root partition (then 80 GB) was full. I shooulkd have used a LiveCD to resize partitions then but I didn't so when I installed Karmic this time I ended up with a 160GB partition for /.Color me surprised when last night I got a message that / was at less than 5% free space.
1. I routinely do a apt clean so the cache is not an issue.
2. I do not store backups on /. I use rsnapshot to same backup on an external hard drive.
3. I use Virtualbox but all my hard drives (VDI) are on /home.
I am having trouble logging into my ubuntu 11.04 desktop. When I type my username and password to login my screen goes blue, as if it is going to next show my desktop wallpaper, but then it loops back to the login screen. I had no idea why and so I went to ALT-F1 and typed in "df" and it turns out that my root partition is full. This is strange since I set aside 40GB for it and I didn't install anything or that many programs that would fill it up. Anyhow, is this fixable by booting to a live cd and using gparted to make root bigger or is there a better way to fix this?
View 6 Replies View RelatedI recently installed Lenny and used the "Guided - Use Entire Disk" option.I made separate partitions for root, /etc, /var, /home, /usr and swap.I trusted that the auto partitioner would choose sensible sizes but possibly that was a bad move, root is only 340Mb and is full.

After running photorec I went from having ~30 gb of free space to having 0 bytes of free space. I have deleted all the results of photorec and various other large files and removed them from trash but it still has not freed up any space. Also, my firefox no longer has back/forward functionality which I'm sure would be fixed by a reinstall but seeing as I have 0 space, I can't really do that. Any thoughts?
View 7 Replies View RelatedWindows 7 x64 was the only install with a separate boot partition which was already on the Dell laptop. I then shrunk the partition to allow me to put opensuse on. Then I made the stupid mistake of deleting the opensuse and boot partitions while in Windows. I was going to do this, copy pictures of my new born baby off then reboot and delete all stuff and redo all the partitions and installs again.Now I just get grub rescue with the following when I do ls command:(hd0) (hd0,1) (hd0,2)I would like advise on how to get the data off, I cannot afford to lose my babies pics as there are no other copies. I will then do a normal install of opensuse first then Windows 7 after it.

Grub immediately takes over upon booting but doesn't detect any partitions. I tried booting from an opensuse cd and changing the boot order priority, but grub still comes up. View 4 Replies View RelatedI have Windows 7 and openSuse on my Acer Aspira 5532. I find that after using it, I'd rather get rid of Windows 7 all together. However, I want to be careful not to remove the partition that has the Windows 7 Reinstallation boot disk just incase in the future I wish to go back to Windows. Is there a way I can make my entire computer Linux (no dual boot) but also not deleting the Windows 7 reinstallation partition?
Further, can someone example why, on Boot, I have like 5 options to choose from? Like two openSUSE versions, failsafe, Windows 1, and Windows 2....? To be honest, when I installed openSUSE, I just did the recommended partition job that it suggested. I don't know much about partitions.

I want ot install a new opensuse 11.4 as yest another OS. Due to the fact that I already have 4 sda partitions, I have to make some changes. What I am thinking about is to copy the sda2 (windows recovery) data to some folder etc (nevermind), then delete the sda2. Then I want to create a new primary partition for the new suse 11.4 and install it. What is worying me is the grub boot menu. I was planning to edit the new one (the opensuse 11.4), with old data.

I have a strange issue, when I run my build on my modules. GNU make keeps deleting the source *.c files from all of my modules. It says that they are intermediate files, and deletes them. I have the source files declared as such in the Makefile.

I have 2 folders that are synced using rsync. Right now if I delete a file in the source folder, the destination folder still retains that file. Is there a way to get rsync to delete files if they were deleting at the source?I could not find anything in the man page.not sure if I'm missing something or if that feature just doesn't exist.

I run a dedicated opensuse 11.1 server with apache (2.2.10-2.9.1) installed. This box has been running for nearly 2 years hosting several low traffic websites. I must admit that I did not give lots of love/attention to the machine over that period. It ran rock solid. The different websites each have their own associated user account and are stored in their own /home/name/public_html/ folder. It was setup through Webmin. Each domain name is also linked to a unique IP (the box has multiple available IPs), however this is configured at my domain provider. All in all a very simple and straightforward setup that never let me down most of the past decade.
Recently the sites on the machine were no longer responding. This happens each other year or so since I write my logfiles to a separate partition. Was df -h and indeed, partition was full. Removed logfiles manually, and while I was at it I decided it was time to run an online update (yast2 / online update that is). Rebooted machine after yast telling me to do so. Sites are no longer working. Can no longer login to webmin. Only thing what works is the 'root' webpage (/srv/www/htdocs folder), which makes me rather clueless as the other sites are just not responding at all, not even a timeout or error message.While I know that deleting logfiles manually is quite stupid, I've done it fore and not really ended up in trouble.
Hence my questions: does this sound familiar to anyone and do you mind to give me a clue about where exactly I should start to look. It's been ages since I actually administrated apache, so I might overlook the obvious. Long story short: any tips are very welcome about what I should check first, what config files might have been changedith the update, etc ...
I was copying a file to my pendrive it was taking a very log time which was ridiculous so I cancelled it but when I reboot my sysem next time my root drive became almost full (20gb partition, 12gb was free before. now its only 3 gb is free) also my pendrive is dead in linux in window it says you have to format the pendrive before use it when I click on format, format stops and says you don't have permission. also Now I cannot write anything on my winodws c or d drive because of permission.

I get to the login prompt; enter my username and password; SUSE starts to do the login but then crashes back to the login prompt. Looking in /var/log/messages doesn't tell me anything useful. However, I noticed that my SUSE system partition is full (at 20 GB). So I think this is the culprit that is stopping my login.
Unfortunately, I can't extend my system partition as it is ext4 (SUSE default) but parted (from SUSE 11.2 live cd) complains that it can't do anything with ext4.

I am doing major deployment of opensuse 313 pcs from windows to opensuse. I am having a problem that I have to keep 2 ntfs partitions intact will deleting the partition that has windows. Now everything goes well, opensuse installs but the problem is that I cannot give user full rights to ntfs folders. I have used graphical file permission methods n terminal chown n chmod methos but still permissions revert back to root.

I am using OpenSuse 11.2 (64 bits) with KDE 4.3.1. My hard disk partition contains 3 areas : / + /home + swap. Frequently the / area is filling with, I suppose, temporary files until it is full (15 Go) and that in a very short time, typically about 5 mn. Then, these files are cleaned by the system, when disk space is needed I suppose. The point is that during this time, the system goes slower and slower until the "cleaning". That seems to occur only when Firefox (3.5.6) is running so I suppose that these files are temporary internet files.

There is a Desktop Folder on the main screen, with one icon named "My Computer". when I click this icon, Konqueror opens a window with detailed information of the System along with Disk Information (detailed partitions of Windows 7). Once I select any one of these partitions, it opens the one said partition.
One thing I have noticed, if I "Right Click" a folder in this Win 7 partition, there is an option of opening that folder with Dolphin Super user Mode. After using this, I can edit the contained subfolders or files.On the other hand if there is a file (i.e. outside a folder), there is no option of Super user Mode and I cannot edit these files. at times I have to rename them or delete them. But for doing so I have to restart computer and go into Windows (which I don't like)is there any way of having a full control of Suse and Windows (permanently). KDE 4.6 - opensuse 11.4.
I have a separate ext4 partition which contains all my data (music, movies, etc). When I delete files from this partition it is very slow because it copies files from my data partition to the Trash folder in my home partition. How can I avoid this? Can't the trash be configured so that it uses a trash folder in each partition instead of copying files to another partition (which is slow).
I can't login due to my file-system being full. I found the main area with the large usage. Var/log is taking 99.5% of my var folder. On a full file-system scan Var/log is taking up 85% of disk use. File-system capacity is 36 gig. Temp is cleared after each boot.
What can I do to clean up any unnecessary files. I can only boot in safe mode and have limited navigation skills. To get scan results I booted a live-disc.
