OpenSUSE Install :: All Filesystems Vanish (look Empty) After A While
Jan 17, 2010
I have a mysterious filesystem issue with openSUSE on an old machine. Installation wasn't very pleasant but worked finally. It boots fine. However after 5 or 10 minutes, all filesystems vanish. Most programs (but not all) cannot be found anymore. "ls" output is empty everywhere. "top" used to work (it was working on a ssh connection that I just lost). Now it complains about unset TERM variable. I was able to set it again to xterm. Now "top" is working, displays the running processes : mysqld, Xorg, icewm (my WM), nothing strange there, nobody is eating up the resources. I have other linux installed on that machine : Ubuntu freezes occasionally, mostly with Gnome, but it seems to be a totally different problem (maybe related to the radeon driver) ; Mandriva works fine so far. The two IBM 120 GB harddrives are quite old but the manufacturer fitness test didn't find failures. I also checked for bad sectors before formating in openSUSE setup. It doesn't look like a physical I/O problem. In such a case, it would crash or at least complain about not being able to access the HD. Well ... I switched to console but I didn't get any login prompt and now I cannot switch back to X. I can still ping the machine but of course not ssh to it. SysReq keys (although enabled) doesn't work. I guess I will have to reboot brutally. Last time it took me about one houre of pressing 'y' tp repair the filesystem with Ubuntu. I'm sure I will be back soon. What do you guys think about that situation ? I suspect a kernel issue with that hardware. Have you heard about similar problems ? I'm afraid I will have to reinstall 11.1, which used to work fine, on that machine.
Some details about the hardware : The (onboard) Promise controller and the SATA controller are not used. The 2 HD are on the first IDE interface as master and slave.
My openSUSE 11.2 system has periodic running of fsck disabled for ext4 filesystems (Maximum mount count = -1, Check interval = 0). What is the reason for this? Is it because fsck is not necessary on a periodic basis with ext4, and only necessary when errors are detected? Or is it because fsck has problems working on ext4 filesystems?
The ext3 filesystems do have it set (Maximum mount count = 500, Check interval = 5184000 (2 months)). I would like to know why fsck is not set to be activated for ext4.
This is a problem I had in Ubuntu some years ago that just seemed to go away; sporadically I will want to select a website by positioning the cursor over the drop-down arrow to the right side of the url box- after the list is displayed it will vanish immediately when I attempt to position the cursor over it to make a selection. Minimizing then maximizing Firefox resolves it.
A minor problem yes - but it would be nice to not have to deal with it.
I was thinking of trying out the UEFI support that HP has in my laptop BIOS in the next few days. My reasons is that I get a custom boot logo... and (hopefully) a better boot-speed. What is the current state of affairs with the openSuSE UEFI/EFI install support on a empty hdd for x86_64 does anyone know? (badly worded I apologize) This may seem naive but I have struggled to answer this with most posts being about Mac's for obvious reasons.
Specifically, Do I have to have any custom knowledge on formatting the HDD with a GPT partitions or does the installer do this for you? Secondly, How well does the UEFI bootloader tie in with the config tools in YaST2? (I would like to have UEFI but if it turns into some headache in setting up the boot area by hand each time the kernel updates I will forget it.) I can safely say this will be a machine with only openSuSE installed as an OS, no need for any others or any dual-boot problems. This isn't overly urgent and I will dedicate (at least) a whole weekend to tweaking once I buy a new disk and install openSuSE on it. If nobody knows then I will dive in head first and report how I find it and any problems (and severity).
I have Win7. I partitioned my C: and made a empty F:(97gb). I want to install 11.2 on F:.
1) At Sys Ananysis I get; The partitioning on disk /dev/sda is not readable by partitioning tool parted... You can use the partitions on disk /dev/sda/ as they are. You can format and asign mount points on them. But you can not add, edit, resize, or removefrom that disk with this tool. I click OK 2) New Installation, Use Auto Config 3) Time Zone 4) KDE (same results with Gnome) 5) Partition Based. I go to Create Partition Setup. 6) In CPS I get
I gave upon 11.3 M4.Tried installation by text mode but there's another screen showing various USB devices status superimposing on the Linux text install. Returned to Live installation via Live CD. Installation completed > restart >autoconfig failed. Tried live installation again but Suse kept suggesting installing into one of the empty 2 Gb partitions. Also had problems with Gparted Live 0.5.1-1 CD because somehow the keys froze. Had to replace it with 0.5.2-1. I am installing 11.2 on a laptop but right now I am stuck with frozen "Creating cache files for fontconfig". This has taken over an hour and nothing seems to be happening. I have successfully installed openSUSE 11.2 on an older laptop and a desktop. Also experienced installing Windows 7, Ubuntu and PC-BSD on both types of machines.
Sometimes my user list is empty on start-up. When it happens the buttons beneath the empty list (shutdown, suspend and restart), are not responding. As a work-around I login to the first terminal as root to restart the machine and usually my normal user account appears back on the list. This morning the reboot work-around didn't work any more..
Not earth-shattering, I don't suppose, but have noticed that since installing 11.3 (Fresh install, x64, DVD), the "Recently Used" list in the "Start(? Kicker??)" Menu, doesn't save applications through a reboot... ie, if I start Thunderbird, Open Office, whatever while logged in, these will then appear in the "Recently used" section of the menu, but then do a reboot, and the applications area in the recently used menu, will be empty. The "documents" area is fine, and shows stuff after a reboot, but not "applications"....
Looking for source code packages I have configured the "Main repository (Sources)" into the yast list of repositories. However when I select the repository view in th esoftware manager it shows this repository as empty. Other repositories work. I have checked the link to the repository to be valid. I have added it automatically from the "Community repositories".
over the last few weeks (i forget exactly when it started) viewing flash videos with konqueror on videos and on the bbc news site has become a bit of a lottery. generally the video starts ok but after a minute or so the video sometimes just disappears -- not even a black box, just white screen and no adobe flash menu on a right-click. the problem happens maybe 50% of the time with videos over a minute or so.
i have seen this on two different boxes both with karmic with the backports enabled. the problem certainly occurs with both kde 4.3.4 & 4.3.5, and i think it was also seen with 4.3.2. does anyone else see this problem? if so is there a fix? i think the following are the most relevant package versions:
code: ii flashplugin-installer 10.0.42.34ubuntu0.9.10.1 adobe flash player plugin installer ii konqueror 4:4.3.5-0ubuntu1~karmic1 kde 4's advanced file manager, web browser and document viewer
I have downloaded and installed programs and cannot find them. today it was k3b and k9copy. i even reinstalled them just in case. synaptic completes the process, but i can't find the programs on any menu. my command-line skills (though improving) are lacking. i've used ubuntu numerous times before and the programs of that type would always show on the 'sound & video' menu automatically. i'm considering the possibility that my installation is faulty.
I've been having this problem when viewing online videos/tv, primarily channel4.com/4od and similar sites.
The videos load up and play with no problems, but if the view is shifted away from the video (e.g. scrolling down the page so the video is no longer visible or switching to another tab or window), after a little while (up to a few minutes) the audio from the video stops and, upon returning to the video window, the video has been replaced with a light grey rectangle. The problem seems to be different from others described here since the videos themselves are running with no problem until the view shifts away from them. Flash-based chat applications have the same problem.
I'm running Firefox 3.6.15 in Ubuntu 10.10 (Maverick). All systems updated repeatedly, as far as I know the problem has existed forever. The issue doesn't seem to exist in Chromium, interestingly (but I prefer Firefox...)
Any suggestions on diagnostics to try to find the cause and solution?
Whenever i try to empty the Trash (As Root) it does so then gives me an error message saying that it can't delete a specific file. It's always the same file and it says:"The file or folder /home/.Trash-0/files/yesterday once more.mp3 does not exist."Having looked in this location logged in as root using both Dolphin and at the command line, this file doesn't exist.
I was copying an .avi file to an external hard drive and half way through the copy the drive reset and required remounting. Consequently I have an empty .avi file on the hard drive. I tried to recopy the file and overwrite, but I keep getting 'Could not write to media/harddrive/filename.avi'. I tried to rename to file to be copied but got the same response, I cannot delete the empty file either, as I get an error telling I cannot delete it. I have tried to do this as the user and root with the same result.Any other file I tried to copy onto the external hard drive is fine, just this one zero length file and the file I was trying to copy, the original of the file. I also tried to delete the file on another computer but couldn'tExternal hard drive is a WD elements ntfs, which works great except for this glitch.
I have some files in my user trash bin which don't get emptied. Can you please tell me where I can find my trash bin using Superuser Dolphin? Or how can I force empty it? I tried /home/.Trash-0/files but it's all empty.
When I say info, I get an empty document: nfo: (dir)Top, 1 linii --AllWhen I say info -f /usr/share/info/dir, I get the same. When I open /usr/share/info/dir in KWrite, I notice that there are tabulations in the Node: declaration. When I removed these tabulations, the directory suddenly displayed all right (info -f /tmp/dir).So I tried the same thing with the file extracted from the current package, and it contains tabulation characters, so I can see nothing there with info.
Starting Yast and then config. repos. gives this error: There were errors while restoring the repository configuration. Error refreshing service Packman Repo (http://packman.inode.at/suse/11.3/packman.repo):Parse error: repoindex.xml[1] Document is empty
If I continue my repo list and software management both come up okay and function as they should (nothing noted yet anyway). Is this just something that glitched when adding the Packman repo and the file repoindex.xml[1] should be deleted?
I have opensuse 11.2 with KDE installed and I changed the default File Manager to Konqueror. I cannot empty the Trash when right clicking on Icon in KDE4. If I try, then I get Icon Settings. Howto switch off these Icon Settings generally?
I just installed proftpd using webpin but when i tried to gonfigure it ,i figured out that the configuration file proftpd.conf is empty, is it about permission ?i just dont get it!
Kaffeine has Empty Video Field, as in it plays a video, the audio comes out but where the video should be is just the screensaver backgroundhrough, even after a reinstallAnyone else having this or had this?Maybe too much fooling around trying to get my tv tuner card working,
I am struggling to figure out why I cannot get Ubuntu to install. I boot my machine and run LiveCD and I can see me 36G raptor in GParted or partitioner or under Places but when i try to install 9.1, there is no drive after the keyboard layout in partitioner. Can anyone please shed some light on this. I have changed sata ports but that didnt help either. I don't understand how it would be a driver issue if I can see the drive and partition it.
I've installed yast2 on suse 10.3but when i start suse i there should normally be something in the right column but the column is empty. Does anyone know how to fix it
How can I restore the data inside the trash after make it empty ?I need to restore an important folder from the trash and I can't find it there.I am using openSUSE11.1 (KDE)
I have openSUSE 11.2 and printer Brother HL-2040 connected to my openSUSE laptop. It was correctly recognized by manufacturer and model and was "automagically" installed by downloading the appropriate driver. Whenever I click "print" its name correctly appears on the page on which you choose where to send the print jobs to. And when I click "print" it prints... empty pages. When I chose to print the test page, 10 empty pages came out. This printer worked just fine under Ubuntu 9.04 and winXP. I read the topic here about HL-2040 in openSUSE 11.2 using the driver of 2060 but upon checking both the printer config page and CUPS web admin page it was confirmed that the driver is actually the correct required one, HL-2060 Foomatic/Postscript.
During 10.04 install I ran into an error every time I tried to install packages, so I just skipped the step figuring I'd do it later.Boot up, nothing but the cd in /etc/apt/sources.list. Does anyone know where I can find the default sources.list?
Currently I have ubuntu 10.04 LTS as the only OS.I have two partitions one for ubuntu and it is ext by default for ubuntu's files. The other is empty NTFS. (yes, it is formatted in NTFS but I haven't saved anything yet on it).The problem is: I want to install win xp sp3 on this empty ntfs partition safely (without losing ubuntu). My friend told me ubuntu will be lost even if I didn't touch its own partition.
Ksysguard has always before shown a process table on one tab and the system load charts on a second tab. Loading Ksysguard produces an error message: "The file /home/*/.kde4/share/apps/ksysguard/Processtable.sgrd does not contain valid XML." That file contains nothing, as it's size in Dolphin is 0. Have updated KDE in Yast; removed Ksysguard 4 (which installed ver. 3) then re-installed ver 4. Still lack the process table.
This is OpenSuse 11.4 on a Toshiba A665 laptop. In other respects the system works perfectly, well almost. I'm examining a large number of files recovered by scalpel from a disk image created by ddrescue. This problem appeared while working through the nnnnnnnn.doc files. Most of them open in LibreOffice, but some produce an error message ("Not a Word 95 document"), open as slides (which is OK), or seem to freeze LO (with a CPU core at 100% in ksysguard). Lacking the process table, I'm having trouble killing the LO process (ps doesn't deliver the process number as expected; still studying it).
I am a final year student doign Computer systems engineering and just been introduced to linux. While still strugling to catch up with the commands, I am now given an assignment under shell scripting.I seriously am strugling to understand this question, can you please assist me.Here follows the assignment:
