OpenSUSE Install :: How To Load Kernel

Apr 17, 2010

Following a zypper dup and turning my computer off for a few hours; when I rebooted, I got a message saying, "error: you need to load the kernel first press any key to continue . . . " And then it goes back to the grub menu for of the same if I select openSUSE 11.2.SystemrescueCD won't boot it. I've tried to "repair installed system" and "rescue" with my openSUSE 11.1 DVD -- it won't even acknowledge (as it were) the presence of 11.2 or the system on the other hard drive (though it does recognise the partitions). The PCLinuxOS 2009 KDE and GNOME live CDs will redo the MBR of installed systems (at least, as far I know, PCLinuxOS is one of systems). In my experience, the 11.2 live CD won't. I was hoping the 11.1 DVD would. What to do?

OpenSUSE Install :: 11.2 From DVD - Load Kernel Operation Hangs At 97% (using Both Normal And Safe Kernel)

Feb 23, 2010

I am an experienced Linux admin and have been using SuSE for many years. My development machine has had every version of SuSE since '02 and although it is a little old, is in good working order. (AMD
2400, 2 gig RAM, 160 Gig IDE disks - SuSE on disk 2) (OpenSuSE 11.1 with the latest kernel works perfectly. This install is on a spare HDD prior to doing a full install on my usual HDD.)

When I try to install SuSE 11.2 from DVD, the load kernel operation hangs at 97% (using both normal and safe kernel), however, I can install from live CD without any problem. I have tried the same DVD on a few "older" machines and had the same problem. I initially thought it was the actual DVD but re-burning has the same problem. I have also tried another DVD writer - same problem.

OpenSUSE Install :: Apparmor Module Does Not Load On Kernel-rt?

Aug 6, 2010

I have just reinstalled OS 11.2 but this time the 64bit system variant. I installed the real-time kernel and saw that the apparmor module reported an error and wasn't loaded. I have never looked into apparmor and only knows it has something to do with security, and thus I wonder if it is important to do something with this issue? I plan to use the kernel-rt and have more or less always used a variant of this kernel flavour, often self built. Though I can not recall having seen that error before and I have not used a 64bit system before

OpenSUSE Install :: 11.2 - Install An Older Kernel As Recent Kernel Is Not Compatible?

Feb 11, 2010

A few days ago yast did update my computer to a new kernel-desktop 2.6.31.12-0.1.1.

My mainboard is an ASUS P4P800-VM with Intel ICH5 chipset. This new kernel is not able, to poweroff my computer. Older kernels were able to poweroff the computer.

How can I roll back to the older kernel? Yast does only offer the recent kernel.

In /boot there are only files of the recent kernel.

OpenSUSE Install :: Time Wrong In XEN Kernel But Right In Desktop Kernel?

Feb 11, 2010

I have a system running openSUSE 11.2 with Desktop and XEN kernel, as well as Windows 7 (not by choice though...). I have noticed a strange time issue, with Windows 7 and the desktop kernel the time is correct (like for example now: 1:32 PM) but in the XEN kernel it is ahead several hours (6:32 PM). If it was an issue between openSUSE and windows then I would think that it is a problem with the system clock but I don't know what would cause a time issue between kernels like that.

OpenSUSE Install :: Differences Between Kernel Default And Kernel Desktop?

Jul 21, 2010

differences between Kernel Default and Kernel Desktop? I've found some past threads like this link and this other link, and some other google info, which suggest the only difference would be the io scheduler. Also, I see the default grub choice is "Desktop" and not "Default", so I take this as a suggestion to prefer one over the other.

However, my broadcom 4312 wireless only works on the "default" and not on the "desktop" kernel, so I guess there must be other differences. I just want to evaluate which one is the less long-term risk option to go.

Jan 4, 2010

Over the past few days I have been trying to install an older kernel (kernel 2.6.28.1) on ubuntu 9.10 64-bit WUBI installation. I compiled, installed, and updated my grub for the kernel. When I reboot, the grub menu correctly gives me the option of booting into the older kernel but when I do so I receive the following error message:

error: you need to load the linux kernel first.

I am at a complete loss on how to fix this. I even downgraded grub but I still get the same error.

OpenSUSE Install :: GNOME Desktop Won't Load On 11.2

Dec 22, 2010

I am trying to get OpenSUSE 11.2 working. Everytime I install it, it installs with errors but when the user I setup auto logs in to the GNOME desktop, the desktop never loads. I can get into failsafe mode sometimes. I've replaced the harddrive and installed it again = same issue. I've redownloaded and burned a different DVD, verifying the checksum, and running the "check media" option = same issue. I've done a repair install = same issue. I've removed the added Ethernet and modem cards and reinstalled = same issue. I've deleted all partitions from previous install and reinstalled = same issue. Currently, I just defraged the HDD on a windows machine and am running the install once more (one a completely different machine) but what's going on here? I need 11.2 for Clonezilla SE (not 11.3)

OpenSUSE Install :: 11.2 Gnome Will Not Load (sometimes) On Lenovo Y550

Dec 15, 2009

I just bought a brand new Lenovo Y550 Ideapad with the following specs:

Intel Centrino 2 2.53ghz
4gb DDR
GEFORCE GT 240M 1GB video card

I bought it blank and installed Opensuse 11.2 Gnome 64bit as the main OS (using it right now). Using the "long method" instructions found on this website, I installed the Nvidia 190.42 graphics driver from the Nvidia website. It is working perfectly. My OS worked great for a while (love it), but now I am unable to boot up completely into Gnome. The bootscreen goes fine until I get past the automatic login screen for gnome, then the display stays on the default green background. My lights indicate that my computer is working, but no panels or icons load onto the desktop. After about two minutes, a notification pops up saying that I am connected to the wireless network, but there are still no panels or icons on the desktop. My mouse pointer works fine, so I know that the display is not frozen. I end up having to shut off my computer and restart it. Usually this takes two tries before the Gnome desktop completely loads and I am able to use my computer. I'm relatively new to Linux, so if I need to do anything "fancy", you'll probably have to be patient with me and walk me through it

I've been tinkering around in menu.lst (after taking back ups) and I can't ever get Ubuntu running - I either get a Grub error 15 (file not found) or error 17 (unable to read partition). By booting on a live CD I can see that all the information is still there, I just can't for the life of me figure out how to get to it from Grub! Did Opensuse move the partitions around during install?

OpenSUSE Install :: Dual Boot On A Mac - Can't Load The System

Mar 20, 2011

I'm trying to install OpenSUSE 11.4 (64bit with the server options included) on my Mac (Core 2 Duo 2.0 Ghz with 2 GB memory). So I have sda2 the OSX, sda1 swap, sda3 is the bootcamp (windows), sda4 (ext4) and sda5(ext5). I installed rEFIt 0.14 first, then I reboot with DVD on. The installation setup resized the Windows partition from Bootcamp, and create 3 other partitions (the sda1,4 and 5). At the installation I choos MBR enable and "/" as home enable.

At the end of the installation I have the error about MBR, that can't mount, or create the mount point? I'll double check the exact message. Anyway, when I try to load OpenSUSE, is not working: can not load the system. I tried to find on the installation menu a repair (I thought that I can find an utility to fix the MBR). I don't want to choose other distribution, because I used SuSE before, and I really like it, and of course this way I can learn more about troubleshooting a Linux installation on different environment
