OpenSUSE Install :: Immutable Section Of HDD + Differencing Section?
Jul 8, 2010
You maybe know that VirtualBox has an "immutable" feature for HDD images. I.e. setup the system, if the stuff is in place, you can set the image to IMMUTABLE to prevent any changes to the image. Differences are written to a separated image. So on the next boot you'll see that all the (unintended) changes are gone and the "old" system is up & running again. I run an old SuSE 10.3 on a write-protected SD-IDE-Adapter. Changing and playing with RPMs is a mess due to around 50 changes I had to do to make that work. Is there any option to mount an SD-card as RO and having all the changes written to e.g. /dev/sda3? To make it clear: I thought about something like a RAID-X system, but could not find any description on how to setup a raidtab.
Trying to add a section in grub to boot a Ubuntu 10.10 from a partition, and can enter all the info OK, but it won't save it. It has an issue with the kernel and ram files not being where configured, but I tell it to save them anyway. When I go back in the section hasn't been saved...??
I am currently running openSUSE 11.4 w/ Gnome 3.I wound up installing Adobe Digital Editions using Wine.Got everything working, except I ended up installing it twice (once as root and once as myself.Currently in my "Applications" I show 2 Adobe Digital Editions.I have ran wine uninstaller as both myself and as root, and the icons are still in the Applications window.I am not sure who is to blame and what I should try to access to rm these icons.
while trying to install debian amd64 KDE, in the Detect Disks section, the process stops at: No disk drive was detected. If you know the name of the driver needed by your disk drive, you can select it from the list.
Driver needed for your disk drive: and gives a long list of drivers. my hard drives are Crucial C300 128GB.
i have no idea which driver on the list to pick so i can continue with install.
I just want to change the text displayed on bootup from "Desktop - opensuse - lotsaversion numbers" to "OpenSUSE 11.3".I tried doing it during installation, but it didn't seem to take affect, and now it won't let me do it through Yast
Anyone else notice this. You can't increase the view area for the lower section where the project islisted.I could also only burn one data dvd. It wouldn't see the next blank dvd. I had to shut k3b and start again.reported to packman and packager
I need some advice about virtual hosting on opensuse 11.1. I have about 6 domains running on the server. I use Webmin and Virtualmin on my server. Everything is working ok but I feel that I do something wrong
1. Lets say I have [URL] web and mail server running. When I write [URL] on my browser, the site is coming up but when I also write [URL] and I see the same page. There is no record on apache for [URL], there is only DNS record for the mail server. What do I do wrong?
2. Apache conf. is as below; do you think is it better to write "any" on address section instead of ip? What is the difference?
Address 88.11.11.111 (ip isn't true) Port 80Server Name domainname.com Document Root /srv/www/domainname.com/public_html
3. IP Address is the same for all domains. How I can configure that; when I write the ip address on my browser, only the specific site which I choose will be opened? Whichever I created last, that site is opening right now.
I have a ati firepro v3700, and I installed the driver I think. I did the fglrx install, and it said it worked. I believe it because prior to doing that my video was off and very laggy, but now it's fine.
My problems are these: yast won't identify my card in the hardware section, and it won't let me turn on 3d effects. I know most people wouldn't care, and I wouldn't, except I use linux to do FEA and CFD research. I used ubuntu before no problem, but some of the programs I used weren't supported.
My live USB (persistent 3GB; total space 4GB) is getting "stuck" at the "loading section". It has never done this before. The "loading section" is where it says Ubuntu and there are 4 or 5 "dots" underneath. It just keeps going from white across to red/orange/whatever. I left it for hours (not sure exactly how long) and it was still stuck at that sequence. If you could help me, that would be great. It is Ubuntu 10.04. I do not want to format & reinstall everything because i got all my settings saved on there with all my programs and settings saved. Plus 4-6 hours of updates (bad internet connection). I don't remember changing anything before I shut down. Approximate start-up time is 2 min. with persistence and 30 seconds without (before i did the persistence option i did regular). Approximate shut down time is 1 minute with persistence and 5 seconds without. When I downloaded the Persistence Ubuntu .iso and everything else, I formatted it. I am running everything on a netbook, Asus EEE PC 1005 HAB if it helps. I have Windows 7 Starter installed, too. I am using it right now and Win 7 Starter has not been affected.
Just installed Fedora 12 x86_64 and love it. But just noticed I'm missing all of the section 2 man pages. Is there a package I'm missing that contains these?? I've got all the standard development packages installed already, and works fine. One example is the gettimeofday() call that works fine in my code, but there's no man page for it.
I can not post to Ubuntu Server section, I choose this section to post about this mysql general problem. I just checking mysql and trying to execute
[Code]...
you know what's the general or the common output? I've not found it yet through google until now. This is my result;
[code]...
but i realize, i never create debian-sys-maint and again, i never create root user until 3 times. Is this some error or missconcept or what? when if we do removing those users, and create 1 user (example: root) is it safe?
In virtualBox I'm running Edubuntu 11.04. Everything worked fine until a couple of days ago, when the top section, containing the close, minimise and maximise buttons, of all windows vanished and don't appear when I re-open them . At the recommendation of TL I ran Code: metacity --replace Which restored the tops while I ran the command but the command never finished and if I stopped the command I lost the tops. Also at TL's recommendation I also ran Code: compiz --replace but that didn't do anything. How to restore bar permanently.
Which directly is accessible during the %pre section? I try to use wget to retrieve a file from FTP to /root but after the machine is build, I don't see that file in /root directory.
I have just installed Fedora 15 xfce on my desktop. When I 1st start my computer my RaLink RT2870 works but after a while it disconnects and won't start again till I restart.
I can't see any pattern I am doing to make it stop. I been doing various tasks when it stopped working. I don't what command prompt or configuration file to look for or what to configure in the file.
how to remove the 'Search and sort section' entirely from the GUI? I would like to only have the cover view in that whole area with just the library size and the buttons on top. I know you can set the cover view to open in a separate window, but then I have to resize the cover view window to cover that whole area every time I start calibre.
I'm runing UBUNTU 11.04 and new to UBUNTU and LINUX. Everything was working fine for me, but somehow Synaptic Pakage Manager and Software Center are now messed up.When I try to open Synaptic I get this error message:
Code:
E: Encountered a section with no Package: header E: Problem with MergeList /var/lib/apt/lists/downloadue.info_repo_dists_natty_all_binary-amd64_Packages E: The package lists or status file could not be parsed or opened.
[code]...
I can open the Software Center but it hangs when I click on any of the options or try to do a search.
What does the warning 'section XXX type changed to PROGBITS' mean, and how do I avoid it? I'm compiling some code to run on a sub-processor, and I'm getting this warning during the linking stage.
I am running a bash script and I would like a command that will show me what differs from some files with similar names so I can delete them. Or if you can provide some info on how to complete my script. Here is my code:
#!/bin/bash pwd=SOURCE #Add extension into the name
I am running RHEL 5 and when I get the backspace key it deletes a section to the left (such as /usr/localbin) instead of just a single character to the left. How do I change that?So it deletes the section instead of just the single character n.
After install CentOS 5.3, when execute yum update in a terminal, with root I had this error:
yum update Loaded plugins: fastestmirror Config Error: File contains no section headers. file: file://///etc/yum.repos.d/CentOS-Media.repo, line: 17 ' #file:///media/cdrom/ ' I think I have something wrong with the repositories but I'm not sure.
I changed to testing repository in my Debian 6.0 and I used command "apt-get update". Now, everytime I want to do something with apt-get or aptitude, I receive this:
With apt-get: Reading package lists... Error! E: Encountered a section with no Package: header E: Problem with MergeList /var/lib/apt/lists/ftp.cz.debian.org_debian_dists_squeeze_main_i18n_Translation-cs E: The package lists or status file could not be parsed or opened.
or with aptitude: [ ERR] Reading package lists E: Encountered a section with no Package: header E: Problem with MergeList /var/lib/apt/lists/ftp.cz.debian.org_debian_dists_squeeze_main_i18n_Translation-cs E: The package lists or status file could not be parsed or opened. I'm using an Intel 965 GM graphics chip with the "intel" driver. I'm curious as to why it doesn't seem to be using any of the options that I'm placing under the Device section of xorg.conf. Here's an example:
In my Xorg.0.log file, I get the following message: (WW) intel(0): Option "AccelMethod" is not used Why would it not be allowing me to use options such as this? I know that my driver and video card are compatible with this option, as is indicated in this manual: [URL]
Would like to use Ubuntu Tweak on 10.10 beta. Is it safe to remove everything that its cleaning section finds? Or do I have to look carefully at what it removes? Can I just let it remove everything it finds and not worry that something I have installed will be affected?
For some reason I have two IDLE icons in my application programming section:
IDLE IDLE(using python-2.6)
Both are the exact same versions, and I'm not sure if I need both. I understand that ubuntu runs on 2.6 so I'm a bit hesitant to just delete one without checking here first.
