OpenSUSE Install :: Immutable Section Of HDD + Differencing Section?
Jul 8, 2010You maybe know that VirtualBox has an "immutable" feature for HDD images. I.e. setup the system, if the stuff is in place, you can set the image to IMMUTABLE to prevent any changes to the image. Differences are written to a separated image. So on the next boot you'll see that all the (unintended) changes are gone and the "old" system is up & running again. I run an old SuSE 10.3 on a write-protected SD-IDE-Adapter. Changing and playing with RPMs is a mess due to around 50 changes I had to do to make that work. Is there any option to mount an SD-card as RO and having all the changes written to e.g. /dev/sda3? To make it clear: I thought about something like a RAID-X system, but could not find any description on how to setup a raidtab.

900mhz cpu
256 ram
20gig hd
??ati rage mobility m3 video card ??
when I start up ubuntu (10.10) and reach the desktop, the screen is messed up. The center of the screen becomes blurry, and it looks like what is normally the right part of the screen is duplicated in the middle of the screen (with what should be the middle of the screen disappearing).
I think its an ATI video card, and I tried to install different driver from Softwarecenter but no succes.I know the screen is working, because when I boot forinstance, the Ibm logo is showed nicely across the screen. So its not a hardware issue. Another thing, I got puppy linux to work correctly after having the same grapphic issues on that OS when I first installed it. But some how I managed to get the right drivers. But as I like ubuntu more, I would appriciate your help with figuring this out
ps. when I try to setup screen resolution in System>Settings>"resolution", Ubuntu says "unknown display" (marked with red color).
Ubuntu :: Desktop Locks Up When Try To Change Desktop Background?
Jan 4, 2011After installing gnome-color-chooser for Ubuntu 10.10, I followed all the steps to enable transparent gnome menu. When I logged out and logged back into my user, the gnome panel menu was transparent as It should be however, the desktop background changed color and I cannot change the desktop by right clicking the desktop. If I do right click and try to, the entire desktop and all programs freeze. The mouse works but that is it. Whenever I try to open gnome-color-chooser, I get this error message : ERROR Could not open or create file /home/User/.gtkrc-2.0-gnome-color-chooser. I have uninstalled and reinstalled both gnome color chooser and gnome panel with no luck.

Secondly, it defaults with 4 desktops in a 2X2 grid layout. I changed it to 2, then back to 4 and now it has 4 desktops in a linear layout (1x4). How can I change it back to 2X2?

It looks as if, regardless of what I set, I get daily checks. Is anybody else experiencing this? Anybody got a fix? Jun 20, 2011AAO D255, all updates, Ununtu 11.04My desktop background and folder icons are dim in comparison to the slider and any program I open. I also notice that when I run a program that installs anything that screen dims (gets like this grey opacity I guess) after a period of time. I am plugged into the wall so the laptop is NOT running on battery.Is there some setting I need to tweak after this latest install? This did NOT occur prior to samesaid.

Aug 13, 2011We've been using CentOS on our servers for many years, and remain happy customers. Been considering also using CentOS for desktops, since there's some advantages in standardisation. Also wondering whether CentOS really does belong on desktop. Perhaps its instructive that there's no "Desktop" section in these CentOS forums. Maybe a message buried there.
I'm finding that CentOS 5.6 desktop can do most things we need, except support Ipod connection for podcasts.
FLOSS weekly and SecurityNow are part of regular entertainment. gpodder is good in other 'nixes, but seems difficult to install in CentOS. Should I pursue this, or keep using another distro for daily desktops?

May 29, 2011I am running ubuntu 11.04, and recently installed slim to be able to change my login screen theme. After changing it, I restarted my computer, typed in my username/password and it just brought me to an image of my background with no icons or the sidebar. When I press Ctrl+Alt+F1 it brings me to a command prompt. Also, after the log in I get an error displaying Enter password to unlock your login keyring. After entering my password nothing happens.

Jul 7, 2010I wanted to use a regularly- and frequently-updating weather map as my desktop background (extreme desktop tweakers can stop reading here: yes, I'm committing the unspeakable act of using a 640x480 image as the background for my 1280x1024 desktop. What can I say? I'm a pragmatic kinda guy . . .). I came up with the following solution for doing this, but wanted to post here to see if someone else might suggest something more elegant and/or superior.
First, I created an extremely simplistic bash script that downloads the weather map image (640x480 a gif) and writes it to a file in my home directory called wmap-bkgrnd.gif. It's only two lines, as follows code...
So now cron downloads the image every 10 minutes and writes it to the wmap-bkgrnd.gif file in my user's home directory. Finally, I right-clicked on the gnome desktop and selected "change background," selecting that image as my desktop background.
It works, and gives the desired effect. I now have a weather map that updates every 10 minutes as my desktop background.
So, my questions. Is there a simpler/better way to accomplish this task? I have to say I have nothing against higher-resolution images and would use one if I could find something suitable. But so far, in the way of frequently-updated maps, I've only been able to find this low-resolution one.

Apr 1, 2011This is so bizarre I'm not even sure what to search google for. When I log in, the GDM background stays on one of my screens. It appears, however, that Gnome and my applications are running properly on that screen - as I move the mouse around, the pointer changes just as I would expect. The GDM root window is simply covering everything. I've tried logging out/in and rebooting, but that hasn't helped. I assume that if I simply kill the GDM processes that my session will exit. This seems to have started since I last installed updates (that's why I rebooted the first time earlier today).

OpenSUSE :: Can't Set Any Jpg/png As Desktop Background?
Feb 11, 2010I've had this problem for a long time (since I first installed 11.2) but I hoped KDE SC 4.4 would fix it for me. Since it didn't, I decided to make a thread about it. I have a really weird problem ─ I can only set svg graphics as desktop backgrounds. I can't put any kind of png/jpg (haven't tried others) picture as a wallpaper. All I get is a black background. The weather backgrounds etc. work perfectly fine. I can create a svgz file in Inkscape and insert a png image in it but that's kind of a stupid workaround for a problem. Has anyone encountered a problem like this?
