Ubuntu Multimedia :: X Not Using Options Under Device Section Of Xorg

Apr 4, 2010

I'm using an Intel 965 GM graphics chip with the "intel" driver. I'm curious as to why it doesn't seem to be using any of the options that I'm placing under the Device section of xorg.conf. Here's an example:

Section "Device"
Identifier "Configured Video Device"
Driver "intel"
Option "AccelMethod" "XAA"
EndSection

In my Xorg.0.log file, I get the following message:
(WW) intel(0): Option "AccelMethod" is not used
Why would it not be allowing me to use options such as this? I know that my driver and video card are compatible with this option, as is indicated in this manual: [URL]

Ubuntu :: Replace In The Xorg.conf File The Line In The Section "Device"

Software :: Xrandr Options In The Xorg.conf?

Jun 22, 2010

I'm using a netbook with an intel GPU and a recent intel driver. In my .xinitrc, I have this command: xrandr --output LVDS1 --set "scaling mode" "Full aspect" But that causes a brief black flicker and stalls the login a little bit. I'd like to specify this in my xorg.conf or find some way for this option to be set as Xorg starts. I don't know what the xorg.conf equivalent option is, or even if one exists.

Ubuntu :: Where To Change X Configuration Options In Natty Without Xorg.conf

I need to add an option to my xorg.conf to enable "backing store", like this:

Section "Device"

Driver "miserable"
Option"BackingStore""True"
EndSection

But I don't have an xorg.conf file in Natty. There are several conf files in /usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d/, but I'm not sure which one to add it too (I can't find the Device section in any of them). I guess I don't even know if the "BackingStore" option is valid in the latext Xserver.

OpenSUSE Hardware :: Setting Mouse Options Without Xorg.conf ?

Dec 26, 2009

I just installed 11.2, and discovered when I went to setup my Logitech Marble Trackball, that there was no /etc/X11/xorg.conf file. After some Googleing, I created one using sax2, Edited it to add the appropriate parameters to enable scrolling using the ball, and all works great.

My question is if there is a more "correct" way to change the parameters, as the mouse parameters are obviously stored somewhere on the machine.

BTW, for those with a Marble Trackball, all you need to know about the xorg.conf setup can be found here:

OpenSUSE Install :: Immutable Section Of HDD + Differencing Section?

Jul 8, 2010

You maybe know that VirtualBox has an "immutable" feature for HDD images. I.e. setup the system, if the stuff is in place, you can set the image to IMMUTABLE to prevent any changes to the image. Differences are written to a separated image. So on the next boot you'll see that all the (unintended) changes are gone and the "old" system is up & running again. I run an old SuSE 10.3 on a write-protected SD-IDE-Adapter. Changing and playing with RPMs is a mess due to around 50 changes I had to do to make that work. Is there any option to mount an SD-card as RO and having all the changes written to e.g. /dev/sda3? To make it clear: I thought about something like a RAID-X system, but could not find any description on how to setup a raidtab.

General :: How To Tell Xorg To Reload Input Device Module

May 14, 2010

When X.org boots up, Synaptics touchpad works well. But when I remove the module it falls back to /dev/input/mice and don't use normal driver even when touchpad is available again.

Xorg.0.log:
...
(II) XINPUT: Adding extended input device "Synaptics Touchpad" (type: TOUCHPAD)
(--) Synaptics Touchpad: touchpad found
# { rmmod psmouse && echo mem > /sys/power/state && modprobe psmouse; }
(WW) : No Device specified, looking for one...
(II) : Setting Device option to "/dev/input/mice"
...

How to tell X.org to try it's InputDevice again (without restarting X server)? rmmod psmouse is needed to prevent crashing of Acer Extensa 5220 when resuming from suspend-to-ram. Found answer myself: Doing xinput set-int-prop "Synaptics Touchpad" "Device Enabled" 8 1 after reloading the kernel module reloads touchpad. Now suspend-to-ram works OK.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Thinkpad A22m Video Driver - Mid Section Of Desktop Blurry?

Nov 14, 2010

I have a problem with the graphics on my thinkpad a22m laptop. specs:

900mhz cpu
256 ram
20gig hd
??ati rage mobility m3 video card ??

when I start up ubuntu (10.10) and reach the desktop, the screen is messed up. The center of the screen becomes blurry, and it looks like what is normally the right part of the screen is duplicated in the middle of the screen (with what should be the middle of the screen disappearing).

I think its an ATI video card, and I tried to install different driver from Softwarecenter but no succes.I know the screen is working, because when I boot forinstance, the Ibm logo is showed nicely across the screen. So its not a hardware issue. Another thing, I got puppy linux to work correctly after having the same grapphic issues on that OS when I first installed it. But some how I managed to get the right drivers. But as I like ubuntu more, I would appriciate your help with figuring this out

ps. when I try to setup screen resolution in System>Settings>"resolution", Ubuntu says "unknown display" (marked with red color).

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Want To Extract Music With More Options

Jan 1, 2010

I want to extract *aka rip *aka import songs from my CD to my computer. In two different formats, one being lossless format (FLAC) and lossy format (MP3).I want control over the kbps in the lossy format and I also want to remove the licensing as this creates problems when trying to copy the songs over to my mobile device. And of course, include the metadata while extracting.

This all seems fairly simple right?Well, whenever I am extracting the songs from different applications it seems like I have no control over the preferences of the application or the extracting process. There's just a start button and that's it.I have tried the "Sound-Juicer" and "Banshee".Defaults settings for Sound-Juicer extracts at 128 kbps and Banshee extracts at 160 kbps only in ogg format. In the past I have done all my cd extracting in Windows, and I would really like to move over to linux in this field.I used Winamp back in the day and was really happy with the PRO version of it. Lame Mp3 Encoder with Winamp Pro.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Getting Xorg To Use Modelines For HDMI

Mar 27, 2011

I'm having trouble with my sony bravia and the automatic setting of the display over HDMI. In the Xorg.0.log I get a bunch of "EDID contradicts itself" error messages and then finaly it will set a 1920x1080 resolution at 50Hz. In the nvidia gui I successfully see the 24Hz, 50Hz and 60Hz modes, but when I select them, my TV does not recognize them as such. Because of this, xbmc can not set the right refresh rates (I assume this is the cause) and I get tearing.

Some output:
Xrandr gives:

Code:
1920x1080 50.0* 51.0 52.0 53.0 54.0 55.0 159.0
At the same time, "nvidia-settings -nt -q RefreshRate" says
Code:

Ubuntu Multimedia :: RhythmBox Auto Generate Playlists With Options

Feb 9, 2010

I have recently got a new car, which as a USB port to connect either an iPOD or Storage Device. For some reason I decided to get a portable 500GB HDD to put my music on. When you plug in an iPOD you get the nice options to search by genre, artist, etc. You don't get this option with a storage device, just the option to go through the folders. The car stereo will read playlists. I'm wondering whether there's an easy way to create playlists so I get these options:

Artists > Artists A-D
Artists > Artists E-G
etc

Genre > Genre A-D
etc

I know rhythmbox can do this manually (as can iTunes) but surely there's an easier way. I'm planning to keep adding more music so an automated process would be nice to keep the playlists refreshed. Where the playlists are saved onto my HDD rather than having to save them one by one.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: 1366x768 Not Listed Under Options With ATI Radeon HD 5830?

May 26, 2011

I've just bought a new rig. The graphics card (as listed in the title) is a ATI Radeon HD 5830. With the normal out of the box drivers I can get a resolution of 1366x768 (The native resolution of my 32inch panel) but the 3D performance isn't good. With the ATI proprietary drivers installed 1366x768 isn't in the options (The ATI menu and the normal one)So I need to generate an xorg.conf and add the resolution?[edit] OK so I checked to see if the 3D performance was any better with the proprietary drivers (despite the funky resolution) and it caused Minecraft (The only game I really play under Linux) to freeze on startup. I think what I'll do is stick with the Radeon Open Source driver (which runs all the visual effects nicely anyway) and just do all my gaming in Windows

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Xorg/HDMI Display Anomalies With LCD TV

Feb 28, 2010

I just bought a new desktop with integrated intel graphics and built in HDMI. I don't have a monitor, only a 42 inch LCD TV. Now, when I plugged in the HDMI cable, when ubuntu loaded, it was oversized(overscanned) cutting off both panels(think zoomed in a bit). After failing to fix, I bought an ATI HD4350. When using the open source ati drivers(default on reboot), the screen looked perfect and fit perfectly when using the DVI to HDMI cable to the TV, was a bit UNDERsized when using a regular HDMI cable to the HDMI port on the new video card. Now, when I installed Catalyst...same problem as before. Entire image was overscanned using either port. Decided to get a better video card anyways, so returned ATI for Nvidia 9500. When booting again into a clean install, with nv drivers and using DVI-> HDMI cable(9500 doesn't have HDMI out), the image again fit perfectly on the TV. When installing the Nvidia proprietary driver, image goes back to being overscanned(Exactly same proportion as intel HDMI out and ATI with catalyst). Thankfully Nvidia gives an overscan correction tool that I scaled the picture down with, but it's ever so slightly off center or our of proportion(that is, it leaves small black strip on either side when height is adjusted perfectly).

In a nutshell, the open source drivers display perfectly. Proprietary and intel drivers are overscanned. Now, to confuse you anymore, with Lucid, even the open source ATI driver is overscanned by default. I'm trying to track this problem down and have no idea where to start.
