Ubuntu :: Safe To Remove Everything That Its Cleaning Section Finds?

Oct 1, 2010

Would like to use Ubuntu Tweak on 10.10 beta. Is it safe to remove everything that its cleaning section finds? Or do I have to look carefully at what it removes? Can I just let it remove everything it finds and not worry that something I have installed will be affected?

Ubuntu :: Remove The 'Search And Sort Section' Entirely From The GUI?

Sep 22, 2010

how to remove the 'Search and sort section' entirely from the GUI? I would like to only have the cover view in that whole area with just the library size and the buttons on top. I know you can set the cover view to open in a separate window, but then I have to resize the cover view window to cover that whole area every time I start calibre.

Ubuntu :: Safe To Remove Unity?

Jun 1, 2011

So I upgraded Ubuntu and was greeted by Unity. I was unsure of it at first and figured I would give it a shot. It has failed miserably in almost every way aside from looking nice in some instances. It's slow, clunky, and was a total wreck to my efficient use of the computer. But they can't all be winners I suppose. I can see where it would be useful (since it seems more finger-friendly) on a tablet device, but I'm using a standard notebook, not a tablet.

That being said, I switched back to what is now "Ubuntu (Classic)" and have put things happily back on track. However, since I have no intentions of ever bothering with Unity again, I want to remove it - it's just wasting space. My questions are, would this be safe? Are Unity and Ubuntu entwined to the point where doing so would make future updating/upgrading a problem? If it is a problem for the future, I feel it would be easier to just change distros (Mint, OpenSUSE, or just Kubuntu) - any recommendations?

OpenSUSE Install :: Immutable Section Of HDD + Differencing Section?

Jul 8, 2010

You maybe know that VirtualBox has an "immutable" feature for HDD images. I.e. setup the system, if the stuff is in place, you can set the image to IMMUTABLE to prevent any changes to the image. Differences are written to a separated image. So on the next boot you'll see that all the (unintended) changes are gone and the "old" system is up & running again. I run an old SuSE 10.3 on a write-protected SD-IDE-Adapter. Changing and playing with RPMs is a mess due to around 50 changes I had to do to make that work. Is there any option to mount an SD-card as RO and having all the changes written to e.g. /dev/sda3? To make it clear: I thought about something like a RAID-X system, but could not find any description on how to setup a raidtab.

Ubuntu :: Remove Directories That *don't* Contain A File - Safe Testing Method?

Apr 15, 2011

I'm trying to clean up an iTunes-sorted Music directory. For whatever reason, it contains a large number of folders that have album art, but no music. I'm actually more concerned about a safe way to test my removal batch, but I thought I'd paste everything I did in case it's useful to someone. Based on this thread, I came up with the following script:

Code:
#!/bin/bash
find ./*/* -type f -iregex ".*(mp3|m4a)" | sort | while read line ; do
echo "${line%/*}" >> file1
done
sort -u file1 > fileuniq

[Code]...

But I'm scared to just run this on my music folder. Is there any way to run rm in "test mode", so that I would just see verbose output, but it wouldn't actually delete anything? Failing that, does anyone see anything wrong with my plan?

Software :: Safe To Remove Old Grub Files After Upgrading To 2?

Oct 13, 2009

I just installed grub2 on my laptop and everything works fine and boots right. It gave my the option to run

'sudo rm -f /boot/grub/menu.lst*' after the installation because it said it could not determine itself if these files were necessary to keep.

I'm not sure what files they are exactly, or how to find them either, but do people usually delete them after upgrading?

Debian :: Duplicate Files In User Library - Safe To Remove Outdated

Feb 8, 2011

I have just upped from lenny to squeeze. I didn't mean to, really, but the package manager was well into its stride by the time I realised what was happening. Mostly all went well, BUT /usr is now 100% full. I notice that there are duplicate files in /usr/lib, eg Oct 11 22:35 libgcj.so.10.0.0 and Sep 14 2008 libgcj.so.90.0.0 (I assume the latter has been replaced by the former?). Is it safe to remove the "outdated" lib files? Is there an elegant way of doing it?

I've got problem with Avahi on my laptop. It can see the other machines and services on the LAN but not it's own local services and I have no idea why. The laptop (hostname: forseti) sports Ubuntu 10.10, installed aavahi-daemon, avahi-dnsconfd and libapache2-mod-dnssd. Firewall is disabled. Other hosts on the LAN are: magni (openSuSE 11.4 with lots of services published and visible from forseti) and freya (Ubuntu 10.10 with gnome-user-share up & running). Forseti can see the other hosts and their services but not itself. The other hosts can't see forseti. Checked both with nautilus and CLI's avahi-browse.

Ubuntu :: Grub Finds No Kernels / Only Memtest

Jul 31, 2011

I ran grub-customiser to set default kernel, and saw the GFX mode setting, thinking "Hey, my monitor is native at 1440x900! I'll use that!" ...Didn't think about how the GFX card isn't initialized at that point, so my res is limited to 640x480... So the first problem was a system hang at the grub menu, with "Input Not Supported" displayed on the monitor.I changed the GFX mode back, and ran update-grub, and with a grin on my face, I rebooted. The grin went away fast, when I saw that none of the kernels showed in the grub menu, and I have only the two memtest entries. It appears that, while all the files are still intact, grub is not seeing the kernels. I had an idle partition of about 13 GB on hand, so after trying all sorts of things, I did a clean install on the little 13 GB partition. Still no dice, after doing an apt-get purge grub etc etc etc on my main Ubuntu partition, to make sure that the new grub was running. I still have only memtest, even though I can open the /boot directory and see the kernel files. I tried going into the grub command line and starting manually, but tab-complete does not suggest any of the kernel files, and tells me that the files do not exist, if I type in their full names.

I need to write a script that can search up to 3 parameters and find all files containing those words. then display them and the amount of hits it got.if the first parameter exists, then we can assume we are looking for the word supplied.if the second parameter exists, then we are looking for files with both keywords.if third parameter exists test the second parameter for the values ('and', 'or', '-v') and search accordingly. These are the only values accepted as the the second one when 3 parameters are present.

lastly, if there are zero or more than three parameters echo as an error and when 3 parameters have been entered we echo an error when the second parameter is not one of the following: 'and', 'or', '-v'.

Ubuntu Networking :: 11.04 - New Wireless USB - Finds Networks, Can't Connect?

May 20, 2011

So I was the one who couldn't get their ethernet port to function properly. Most likely, this was the result of bad hardware since none of the community's suggestions for software fixes did anything. I believe this is probably true.Indeed, when I bought a cheap $10 wireless USB dongle, it immediately worked better than all the previous things. It detected networks, displayed network strength and even allowed me to attempt login.

The only problem now seems to be that it cannot login. I've rechecked the password countless times, but it just shows the 'connecting to wireless' animation for a minute or two and then poops out and says, 'disconnected'.I assume if everything is getting me this far, the driver is not the problem with the device. Is this a safe assumption?

General :: Safe To Remove Sendmail By Running "yum Erase Sendmail" And Let Postfix Handles "mailx" Also?

Sep 5, 2010

I have installed postfix and dovecot on my server and thought postfix will not only take SMTP connection from my e-mail client like Outlook, but also handles "mailx" commands from the server. However, it looks like sendmail is still responsible for sending mails from "mailx". I tested this by turning it on/off using "service sendmail stop" and "service sendmail start". Mails sent using "mailx" will only be sent when sendmail is up. When I did "yum info sendmail", it lists sendmail as an installed package. Is is safe to remove sendmail by running "yum erase sendmail", and let postfix handles "mailx" also?
