Ubuntu :: E: Encountered A Section With No Package: Header
Jun 13, 2011
I'm runing UBUNTU 11.04 and new to UBUNTU and LINUX. Everything was working fine for me, but somehow Synaptic Pakage Manager and Software Center are now messed up.When I try to open Synaptic I get this error message:
Code:
E: Encountered a section with no Package: header
E: Problem with MergeList /var/lib/apt/lists/downloadue.info_repo_dists_natty_all_binary-amd64_Packages
E: The package lists or status file could not be parsed or opened.
[code]...
I can open the Software Center but it hangs when I click on any of the options or try to do a search.
I have an error message that I do not understand nor know how to resolve:
E: encountered a section with no Package:header E: Problem with MergeList/var/lib/apt/lists/archive.canonical.com_ubuntu_dists_natty_partner_b inary-i386_Packages E: The package lists or status file could not be parsed or opened. E: _cache>open() failed, please report.
I hope this is simple for some of you!!! I do not have a clue what this means, I'm pathetic.
I just finished installing a dual boot XP/Ubuntu 10.04 LTS for desktop about half an hour ago, and it's my first experience with a Linux OS. Now that my *complete idiot noob* flag is flying, I have an error I think I need to report:An error occurs with the Package Manager, I get this message when I try to run it, and when Ubuntu boots:
E: Encountered a Package with no Package: header E: Problem with MergeList /var/lib/apt/lists/ us.archive.ubuntu.com_ubuntu_dists_lucid_restricte d_binary-i386_Packages E: The package lists or status file could not be parsed or opened.
This usually means that your installed packages have unmet dependencies I tried to download and install Chrome, and it came up with a similar error.
Is my install corrupt/incomplete or something? My setup is a P4 2.4Ghz, 512Mb RAM, onboard graphics, wireless internet and the HDD is 40GB, split into 2 partitions, and my Ubuntu Partition is 10 GB. I'm running Ubuntu 10.04 LTS distribution, and the other OS is Windows XP Professional SP3.I installed Ubuntu by using the Wubi installer.
Code: Reading package lists... Error! E: Encountered a section with no Package: header E: Problem with MergeList /var/lib/apt/lists/archive.ubuntu.com_ubuntu_dists_natty-updates_universe_i18n_Translation-en E: The package lists or status file could not be parsed or opened. Get this kind of error while trying to update Natty.
I cannot get the update or software center to work now that I am running natty. When I try to update manager it says "E:Encountered a section with no Package: header, Problem with MergeList /var/lib/apt/lists/us.archive.ubuntu.com_ubuntu_dists_natty_main_bina ry-i386_Packages, E:The package lists or status file could not be parsed or opened" I assume that the software center has something to do with this too...
I changed to testing repository in my Debian 6.0 and I used command "apt-get update". Now, everytime I want to do something with apt-get or aptitude, I receive this:
With apt-get: Reading package lists... Error! E: Encountered a section with no Package: header E: Problem with MergeList /var/lib/apt/lists/ftp.cz.debian.org_debian_dists_squeeze_main_i18n_Translation-cs E: The package lists or status file could not be parsed or opened.
or with aptitude: [ ERR] Reading package lists E: Encountered a section with no Package: header E: Problem with MergeList /var/lib/apt/lists/ftp.cz.debian.org_debian_dists_squeeze_main_i18n_Translation-cs E: The package lists or status file could not be parsed or opened. You maybe know that VirtualBox has an "immutable" feature for HDD images. I.e. setup the system, if the stuff is in place, you can set the image to IMMUTABLE to prevent any changes to the image. Differences are written to a separated image. So on the next boot you'll see that all the (unintended) changes are gone and the "old" system is up & running again. I run an old SuSE 10.3 on a write-protected SD-IDE-Adapter. Changing and playing with RPMs is a mess due to around 50 changes I had to do to make that work. Is there any option to mount an SD-card as RO and having all the changes written to e.g. /dev/sda3? To make it clear: I thought about something like a RAID-X system, but could not find any description on how to setup a raidtab.
I'm installing a NVIDIA driver and encountered some error message. Please see below the sequence (I've set runlevel to init 3);
linux:~/SuSe # rpm -ivh NVIDIA_GLX-1.0-4191.suse81:i586.rpm Preparing... ############################ [100%])file /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/drivers/nvidia-drv.o from install of NVIDIA_GLX-1.0-4191 conflicts with file from package XFree86-server-4.3.0.1-21
when I want to add a new applet (e.g. the Brightness Applet) to my panel in Lucid (10.04) I get the following error:
Code: The panel encountered a problem while loading "OAFIID:GNOME_BrightnessApplet". This happens with all applets. This error also appears when after the login. It's quite annoying to not have a clock, tray area and a window list. I searched in different forums but didn't find a solution.
I recently rebuilt my system and did a fresh install of Ubuntu 10.04. Now, everything I try to install returns the following errors. I have tried installing the troubled packages but I get the same errors. Any thoughts?
I can not post to Ubuntu Server section, I choose this section to post about this mysql general problem. I just checking mysql and trying to execute
[Code]...
you know what's the general or the common output? I've not found it yet through google until now. This is my result;
[code]...
but i realize, i never create debian-sys-maint and again, i never create root user until 3 times. Is this some error or missconcept or what? when if we do removing those users, and create 1 user (example: root) is it safe?
In virtualBox I'm running Edubuntu 11.04. Everything worked fine until a couple of days ago, when the top section, containing the close, minimise and maximise buttons, of all windows vanished and don't appear when I re-open them . At the recommendation of TL I ran Code: metacity --replace Which restored the tops while I ran the command but the command never finished and if I stopped the command I lost the tops. Also at TL's recommendation I also ran Code: compiz --replace but that didn't do anything. How to restore bar permanently.

I recently had a hard drive on a computer (not to be obvious), and I fried the computer. You may ask "well why did you do that?" well, simply because I had accidentally bumped and switched to 220 volts, rather than keeping it at 115 like a sane individual. Anyway, I got a new computer, swapped the hard drive. When I go to boot into ubuntu though, it gives me the following error:
Code: Ubuntu is running in low-graphics mode The following error was encountered. You may need to update your configuration to solve this. (EE) No devices detected.
I also have XP on this hard drive, and it works almost better than it did on my old one, surprisingly. all i have to do now for it to be labeled as efficient, is to get some RAM. But anyway, what can I do about the error message? I tried booting into recovery, running dpkg from the list of options, and it did a couple of things.
When I first got Ubuntu a few weeks ago, and got the older version of Wine from the Software Center, and it could run pretty much any game I wanted. Albeit really slowly. Well, I upgraded to 1.2 using the instructions on the wine website, and now a couple of my low-power games (like Bootfighter Windom XP) run totally perfectly, but a lot of mainstream games like Mirror's Edge and Mass Effect 2 just crash when I attempt to open them, and all they all have the same message where the main .exe file has "encountered a serious error." Here's what the terminal gives me:
Code: Backtrace: =>0 0x68286bbe in libc.so.6 (+0x110bbe) (0x033bd9c0) 1 0x693815a1 in winhttp (+0x115a0) (0x033bea20) 2 0x69381aa1 WinHttpQueryDataAvailable+0x60() in winhttp (0x033bea70) 0x68286bbe: fmull 0x488bdc4a(%ecx) .....
I'm having some trouble installing Ubuntu 10.04. What I am trying to do is completely wipe all things on my computer and install Ubuntu. I have followed the instructions from Ubuntu's homepage on how to download the ISO, and ran their program to put it onto a portable USB device. Through doing all of this, I receive no error messages. Then it tells me to change the BIOS to boot from USB, so I did that. I've successfully accessed the install menu and filled in all the information requested (i.e. computer name, account name, etc.). I select that I want to delete the current partitions and use only Ubuntu. It starts to install, but at 67%, while copying files, I receive an error.
This error is: The installer encountered an error copying files to the hard disk: [Errno 5] Input/output error This is often due to a faulty CD/DVD disk or drive, or a faulty hard disk. It may help to clean the CD/DVD, to burn the CD/DVD at a lower speed, to clean the CD/DVD drive lens (cleaning kits are often available from electronics suppliers), to check whether the hard disk is old and in need of replacement, or to move the system to a cooler environment.
I updated my Xubuntu 10.04 yesterday and some packages had errors on install. I think I have tracked it down to python2.6 install. I ran apt-get install mousepad just to see the errors and this is part of what it returned:
0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 6 not upgraded. 15 not fully installed or removed. After this operation, 0B of additional disk space will be used. Then, I checked where it said the missing files were and found several broken symlinks like this: lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 33 2010-08-09 20:34 xapian.py -> ../../../share/pyshared/xapian.py All of the broken symlinks need another ../ on the front. I was considering creating a script that will read the broken symlinks, add another ../ on the front of the target and then change the symlink target to that address.
When I try to update the computer, like with the automatic updates, every time after it's done I get an error message stating that a number of the updates were unable to actually update:
"Errors were encountered while processing:
What can I do to get those updates to actually update?
I just reformatted my PC and installed Natty 11.04; my work files are all backed up in a separate /home directory that resides on another partition separately. That partition is not formated nor erased. I tried installing git through apt-get:
[code]...
I even followed the troubleshooting procedures for PackageManager here but to the same man-db postprocessing error. Any other logs I should look at?
I'm a first time user of xubuntu or any other linux derivative operating system and I was wondering if I could get some assistance on installing xubuntu 11.04 on my old laptop. When I downloaded the iso and burned it into a DVD+R, I inserted it into the machine and let it ran. It started well and I checked the disc's integrity before continuing with the installation and it passed that. Now, as I enter the installation screen, I select my language then click forward but the installer freezes for a few minutes and later disappears only to be replaced with an error message, "The installer encountered an unrecoverable error. A desktop session will now run so that you may investigate the problem or try installing again." and it does as it says and boots into a demo mode. I try installing again through the "Install Xubuntu.." link on the desktop but it follows the same problem.
My laptop's specifications are as follows: ACER TRAVELMATE 290 256 RAM (240 usable) Intel Pentium M processor 1500 MHz 599 MHz Video card: 64 MB internal Intel 82852/82855 GM/GME Graphics Controller Sound card: Realtek AC97 Audio
Personally I have an intel PC which runs Ubuntu 8.04 smoothly. I tried booting the live-cd from an AMD athlon and encounterred the above mentioned message as an error after loading. I went into the bios and disabled the floppy drive as a third booting option as the machine does not have one in it but I still encounter the same problem. I can insert the floppy drive but doubt that would work?
how to remove the 'Search and sort section' entirely from the GUI? I would like to only have the cover view in that whole area with just the library size and the buttons on top. I know you can set the cover view to open in a separate window, but then I have to resize the cover view window to cover that whole area every time I start calibre.
I have just installed fedora 12 on my toshiba L355D-S7901. While updating my system using the graphical tool I encountered what the system labelled a 'bug'. The following details accompanied the error message:
Error Type: <class 'yum.Errors.RepoError'> Error Value: Error getting repository data for installed, repository not found File : /usr/share/PackageKit/helpers/yum/yumBackend.py, line 3125, in <module>
while start following some tutorials, i face lot of problems only with nvidia-driver.for example, if i try to apt-get install chkconfig, the result will be as below:
