I have been having a lot of trouble lately with installing from CD/DVD. The DVD reader/writer on this laptop is new. Nevertheless, trying to install Ubuntu onto an exernal HD, I get 'input output error on sr0 logical block (a large number) After a long time the booting proceeds to a point, but I never get the actual installation started, and have to shut down manually.
The CD is fine, says the Ubuntu-checker. I just installed using my sons laptop, and there was no trouble. Question: does this indicate a motherboard failure? A memory block damaged? Do you know of a diagnostic tool I can use to check the reading of a CD/DVD?

I have a fortran program example call like this:
This call cant run my fortran program because they output to the screen that the file ' ' (empty) cant be loaded!
So the problem is that my program cant see the file in the long path name above ( the real name is a bit more longer). I try with shorts path names , and the program can run, reading the input file.
I googleit for this type of error and only found that bash have limits on the filenames and inputs, so i change them (/usr/local/linux/limits.h or some like) to a very high value (999) ,but no success.

I have my own declared types and I have to operate with lists of items. I wish to write a one macro, instead of using a function for each type. It's intended to be like this: Code: #define ____append_to_list(head,
item, type)
type* ptr;
for ( ptr = head; ptr->next != NULL; ptr = ptr->next )

I was reading some code the other day and thought that I saw they were using the list.pop method to pop of more than one item at a time. Something like this.
Code:
l = [ 'a', 'b', 'c', 'd', 'e' ]
l.pop(0:3)
['a','b','c']
l
['d','e']
But of course when I looked at invoking the method, it only works for one item at a time. I'm working on a data structure where I'm parcing weather data that is 15 items long that are return in as data in a list that has 3,000 + items. I was wanting to pop off a lists of the 1st 15 items breaking them into chuncks (still trying to figure out how I'm going to store the associations as each day has 2-4 readings an hour for the past 72 hours, so I was wanting to group the days together but have each data point for each time).
I know I can just write a function (with some additional tweaking needed for neg starts to work on the right end):
Code:
def longpop (seq, length=1, start=0):
slice = seq[start:start+length]
del seq[start:start+length]
return slice
But with increasing data sizes, I was wondering if there was a faster built-in way of doing this (perhaps implemented under the hood written originally in C as an extention, for example).

I am trying to install the Matlab 7.5 compiled runtime for 64-bit Linux (MCRInstaller.75.glnxa64.bin) and keep getting a "No Java Runtime Environment(JRE) was found on this system." error message.
I understand the JRE is bundled with MCRInstaller and will self-compile/install. However, I don't have admin access, could this be the source of the problem? If so, how could I fix it (not sure how to direct it to install locally without going into the source code)?
I got around this error before, but stupid me didn't write down what I did and I forgot.

Is there any Linux application for finding the folders with the most number of files? baobab sorts folders by their total size, I'm looking for a tool that lists folders by the total number of files in it.
The reason I'm looking is because copying tens of thousands of small files is excruciatingly slow (much slower than copying a few large files of the same size), so I want to archive or delete those folders with high file counts that that will be slowing down the copying (it won't speed things up now, but it would be faster when I need to move/copy it again in the future).

I'm looking for a way to produce a list of all the directories in the current working directory sorted by the total number of files that are contained with them.
Initially I though that Nautilus could be used for this, but then I realised it doesn't count files in the sub directories.
The best I've got for a command line solution so far is this
Code:
The use case for this is a situation where a user has a quota applied to their home directory which limits the number of files they are allowed to have and they have exceeded that limit.

Recently I have installed DockbarX and Cardapio. After installation they are supposed to be found in the Add to Panel items, but both of them are not there.I can run them directly without any problem. Is there anything else I should do manually? I have tried pkill gnome-panel to restart the panel as well.

I have been using wine to run a mapping application called Tracklogs. It provides Ordnance Survey 1:25000 mapping that can be printed as well as upload routes to my GPS.
It has worked perfectly since Fedora 8, I last updated wine appDb in January 2010 reporting that it was working with Fedora 12 and wine version 1.1.32.
Since wine has been updated, I now get an error dialog "Microsoft Visual C++, This application has requested the Runtime to terminate it in an unusual way. Please contact the applications's support team for more information".
As far as I am aware tracklogs does not use Visual C++ Runtime, so I am not sure why it is even installed. It is a clean install of wine and this is the only application I have.
It has worked consistently for over 2 years and 4 versions of Fedora and no doubt multiple updates of wine, but at some point recently something has changed with wine that causes this error. Have they included Visual C++ Runtime by default? Is there anyway to get rid of it?

I have a program which reads some parameters in from an input file before solving a differential equation. This program compiles fine, I'm using Numerical Algorithms Group (NAG) libraries to solve the differential equation so I'm also the NAG compiler called nagfor.
The namelist I have is declared as follows:
And the input file is:
When I run the code I get the following error message:
I really can't see what's wrong with this code.
Also, I'm using Fedora 11, and running the code in tcsh if this is relevant.

"Runtime Error!

An application has made an attempt to load the C runtime library incorrectly. contact the application's support team for more info" I have tried re-installing several times now. Even downloading a different version. I am also running it through wine through the following command.. "wine "C:Program FilesPhotoshopPortablePhotoshopCS5Portable.exe"

I am new to both linux and fortran programming. I am trying to read from an external file, but it gives this error message: Fortran runtime error: Bad integer for item 1 in list input Part of the code that has the problem is:
open(unit=3,file=&
atrain_data/prfdata/temp_pres_cld_profile_for_CRTM2006-06-15T200163.dat',FORM='formatted')
read(3,*)bsepos
read(3,*)toppos
write(3,*)bsepos
write(3,*)toppos
[Code]...
All the variables have been declared before and there is no problem with that. The problem (error message) is in the (first) line that deals with open(unit=3,file='..//').

I have a code that does 3D rendering that worked on a system running RHEL4 32-bit with an NVIDIA GeForce 260 video card. I have a new system now running RHEL5 64-bit (The shared object libraries for the code are 32-bit) with an NVIDIA GeForce 295 video card that when I execute the code I receive the following error:
BadMatch (invalid parameter attributes)
Major opcode of failed request: 143 (GLX)
Minor opcode of failed request: 5 (X_GLXMakeCurrent)
Serial number of failed request: 26
Current serial number in output stream: 26
Can anyone give me any ideas on what could be causing this error? This really isn't my area of expertise unfortunately. I'm not the author of the code. Could I be missing some libraries or something along those lines? Let me know if you need me to post up more information.

I'm running CentOS operation system 5.2 with the following softwares installed:
1) OS: CentOS release 5.2 (Final)
2) Web Server: Apache 2.2.4
3) Mono: Mono 1.2.4
4) xsp: xsp 1.2.4
5) mod_mono: mod_mono 1.2.4
I don't find any errors during installation of all of the above items. Problem is that, when I try to invoke one of my ASMX file from the browser, I'm getting the following error in my $APACHE_HOME/logs/error_log. This same ASMX is working fine in one of my RedHat ES Linux 5 system, what I mean here is I don't have any compilation or runtime errors in my ASMX code.

I'm thinking of a few ways to do this I'm curious how many better/equal ways there are to do the same task.in a file with format like: 20 text Gi0/2 some other junk I have it reformatted to look like this before going in a database: 0/2 20 text. But for whatever reason some of the new input text looks like this now: 20 text Gi1/0/2 some other junk
My script makes it look like this: 1/0/2 20 text. I want it to remove the leading number and slash if the input file is in the new format.
