If I install the factory release now, can I easily convert my system to a normal 11.3 point release later, after 11.3 is out? If so, how would I do it? (11.2 has an issue that affects me. It's fixed in 11.3 already, so I have to use 11.3 if I'm going to use openSUSE.)

why installing kde 4.6 from factory repos went wrong ? i used zypper dup with oss, non-oss and update repos for 11.3 to reset to default install and boot went ok :
this goes with the following package versions:
$ kded4 --version

my problem : when i add factory repos (core and extra) for kde install of packages from yast is ok when switching system packages to these. but after reboot i have floating point exceptions and a black screen and can' t boot anymore. the only way out i found so far is to zypper dup to go back to kde 4.4.4
how do i install the latest deluge release from the repository? Do Deluge have their own repository of the latest release? openSUSE repository does not have the latest release. I am in search of a bitorrent client. i have uninstalled Ktorrent, i dont want that. in windows i was used to Utorrent.

If I download the whole www folder to my hdd for example: from [URL] to /mnt/repos/oss/ and replace in package manager source [URL] with local one file://mnt/repos/oss will this work as it works from http server? What i want to do is to backup chosen repos before my linux release will be not supported anymore.

Something like doing a kfilereplace on the /etc/zypp/repos.d/ folder and changing all occurances of 11.3 to 11.4 (in all *repo, which are all the files in the folder). Will this work?

View 6 Replies View RelatedI made a network install of a new 11.4 system yesterday. It went all fine, but I was suprised that at the end of the installation some 80 packages required updating.
So what's the point in installing obsolete versions first? A significant amount of time is wasted downloading and installing packages, which will be replaced shortly thereafter. Of course that's the way it works for a media-based installation, because one does not want to create, test and release new installation media everytime a package is updated. But in network installation all it would take is to use the repository with the updated version.
The only argument I could imagine is that an updated package could make the installation fail. Installation with original packages has gonew through some QA. Well yes, of course it's all software, so everything can fail. But when you install updates into your production system there is always the theoretical risk that they contain a fatal bug causing damage. For a new installation the damage would be much smaller, should the installation fail because an untested combination of package version happens not to install cleanly.
I've just gotten a gateway netbook I'd love to throw a copy of ubuntu on. However, before I install I'd like to create a backup factory install disc. The problem is I don't have a DVD drive in my netbook.Is there a DVD writer program for Windows or something similar that would simulate the presence of a DVD drive and allow a backup DVD to be written to it?

i am trying to install opensuse 11.2 to my vaio laptop i have win7 pro 64 bit already installed so i'm trying dual booting i have followed the below steps1- on windows, shrink the c partition and create a new unused volume for suse2- install the suse 11.2 on the new unused volume with hdd config like sda4 swap 4 gb sda5 20 gb / ext4 sda6 120 gb ext43- selected custom packages and started the installaton4- installation started smoothly and after installing packages it tried to reboot the machine at the end. But after this point the reboot operation has failed and gave a blank screen.
At the end the installation failed.I started the machine vaio boot logo comes and stops. i can't even enterbios setup or change boot options.I have unplaged the hd reset the partions, pluged it again and recovered win7So i think the installation damaged the file system.i have tried the above steps 2 times and came up with the same result.I have installed fedora 13 before with no problem.

I know it can be done, but im not finding how exactly.
What ive tried so far. I've taken VBoxManage terminal tool and converted the VDI to a .img file, and tried to move that to my second physical disk, but it didnt work at all.
After some thinking, I booted to acronis true image within my virtual machine, and cloned the C:/ drive of windows over to my second hard drive. That got me further, but doesn't boot fully. Comes up to windows xp logo, and black screen boot loops.
Ive heard about using vditool to create a .raw file, and then go from there, but im at a loss to find vdi tool

i have a backtrack install that i would like to keep while installing suse for an everyday OS; i start the install process but when it gets to partitioning the hard drive, it doesnt seem to recognize anything already being on there; it just gives me the setup for suse, ie:

View 7 Replies View RelatedI downloaded the latest release, burned a disk and successfully booted. When it comes time to choose a partition I don't have the option of replacing the old release. I can install in parallel leaving both but can't use the whole disk. Interestingly enough I CAN replace the windows installation. Of course I already have Grub installed but I don't see how this would affect installing. I read the article here [URL] and it seems I may have missed a step. However it's implied I will lose the current Grub installation. Is that the case?

In jaunty i had the gnome network manager fully working.
When i upgraded to karmic (last october), gnome network manager connected and disconnected the wireless all the time, doing internet unusable.
I fixed the problem installing wicd. I had wireless fully working.
But since yesterday, wicd cannot obtain ip address from wireless and when it can, connects and disconnects net all the time (behaving like gnome network manager). I have reported the problem in this network and wireless forum but yet i cannot obtain answer.
Well, my question is, as gnome network manager from jaunty worked, could i install this gnome network manager release in karmic to fix wireless?.
I recently noticed a menu on Administration>Install RELEASE. I've seen this on LiveCD's Install Ubuntu option but this should not be present when installed on the HDD. I'm not sure when this menu popped up but I am sure this was not here last time I checked

I followed the instructions from the Ubuntu website and made a bootable USB drive using the universal USB installer for windows. I put the usb drive on my netbook and prompted the boot options to boot from the usb drive. Once I got to the installation screen and attempt to install ubuntu on my hard drive it goes blank for a few moments, and a wall of text floods my screen and it stops installing.

However, after booting into Ubuntu, this application called "Install RELEASE" appears. When I run it, it shows up just like I'm installing Ubuntu again. After following it through, it will stop and say that it must unmount /. It offers two options, Go Back, or Continue. Picking either does nothing. This hasn't seemed too big an issue. I can still run it fine. However, the Software Centre is an issue. Whenever I try to download something from it, I get this error:

I'm obviously very stupid, but fedora is polite about it, suggesting it might be a bug. My laptop has 4Gig of am, twin turion. Of dev/sda1 - sda10 I give itsda5 = /boot (40/80M used)sda6 = / (Old fedora install 5G of 19G used)sda7 = /home (9G of 23G used)which is the previous arrangement on fedora 9. Next screen is about a boot loader, and it offers me sda1 or sda6. I tell it go go and play in the traffic and uncheck the box 'install boot loader' I hit 'next' and it crashes, muttering about some python assertation. It offers to save the error, and I say yes, but doesn't - it just saves some other crap.Any ideas, Fedora experts? I'm afraid I'm rusty on fedora, having defected to slackware & slamd64. But I am trying to get back.

At the point where you (I always do this) manually select the partition where you want Ubuntu to be installed there is a option where you want the Mount Point. The options are / /boot /home /tmp /usr etc. up to now I have always used / but I'm not sure effect choosing some of the options would be.
