Ubuntu Installation :: Can't Load GRUB After Release Install

May 11, 2011

I just installed the newest Ubuntu release through the update manager and, after the restart, GRUB won't load. Before GRUB would normally load I get the message: error: the symbol 'grub_xparts' not found grub rescue> How can I fix this? Background: Running an XP and Ubuntu dual boot with the two OSs on different hard discs.

Fedora Installation :: Grub Won't Load After F10 Install?

Oct 22, 2009

After I do a fresh install of Fedora 10 and reboot the computer, nothing happens. All I get is a blinking cursor at the top of the screen. It's like Grub is messed up and won't load. Grub is installed on the Master Boot Record of the drive I need to boot from.

I have an ASUS P4C800 motherboard with one SATA drive that Fedora 10 is installed on. I also have a HighPoint RocketRaid 1740 SATA RAID controller card. When I take the RocketRaid card out, everything boots like normal, but when it is installed all I get is a blinking cursor at the top of the screen. I need the RocketRaid card because it houses my RAID5 array with all my documents. The reason I got the RocketRaid card is because it has linux support and my motherboard was listed on their compatibility chart. I had this exact same setup running Windows XP and everything worked fine. I did not load any drivers for the RocketRaid card and was going to do that after the system was setup. I don't know if that is the problem since the installer does not see the raid array on the RocketRaid during install. I was thinking that maybe Grub is seeing another disk and doesn't know what to do and sits there with a blinking cursor.

I don't know where to go from here and I am a linux newbie. On a side note. If anyone knows of a good linux book (specifically Fedora), please let me know.

Fedora Installation :: GRUB Doesn't Load - Make Load Again Upon Booting?

Feb 9, 2009

I had Fedora 7 and Windows Vista dual booting on my computer. I just installed Fedora 10. When the live CD asked me where to install it, I chose "Remove all Linux Partitions and create default layout" The installation went perfectly, but now when reboot my computer, it boots directly into Fedora; GRUB does not load to ask me which OS I want to load. I know I did not overwrite Vista because I can still view my Vista files through Fedora. Here is my grub.conf file:

What do I need to do to make GRUB load again upon booting?

Ubuntu Installation :: Load GRUB From Grub Rescue Prompts?

Apr 11, 2010

First the hard data:

Upgraded from Ubuntu 9.04 to 9.10 via upgrade manager
System is AMD 64
Have dual boot with XP on seperate hard drive

[code]....

Then the wheelspin:

Seem to have knocked out GRUB as normal loading screen does not appear anymore.
Worse, I think I accidently installed grub to something labelled SDC5.

Cannot get anything except the "grub rescue" prompt. I'm not sure if using the LiveCD (9.10) can help. Have tried a few prompts from other threads but just ended up with mud splattered all over the place. I'm gathering I need to load grub, but can I do it using any grub rescue commands?

Ubuntu Installation :: Cannot Seem To Install Latest Release Over 5.04

Feb 26, 2010

I downloaded the latest release, burned a disk and successfully booted. When it comes time to choose a partition I don't have the option of replacing the old release. I can install in parallel leaving both but can't use the whole disk. Interestingly enough I CAN replace the windows installation. Of course I already have Grub installed but I don't see how this would affect installing. I read the article here [URL] and it seems I may have missed a step. However it's implied I will lose the current Grub installation. Is that the case?

Ubuntu Installation :: Would Not Load After Install / Will Load Via Live Cd

Feb 26, 2010

I'm trying to install Ubuntu (9.10) on my sisters computer. I have installed ubuntu 9.10, but when I try to boot it from hard drive, it would stop loading a bit after the logo appears. The screen would turn off while the system is still running. Live version of Ubuntu works after reports of errors. I tried to search for the problem all over the forum, and could not find a good lead to figure out the problem.

So far to figure out the problem, I verified if cd is corrupted. No issues there. Googled the problem, and seems like other users were able to install 7.04 (old posts).
Its so weird though that live version works and the installed version does not.

Here are my specs:

I can post logs, but I'm not sure which one is useful as I'm relatively new to this process.

Ubuntu Installation :: Cannot Install 11.04 Final Release From USB Drive?

Apr 28, 2011

I can't install Ubuntu 11.04 32bit Desktop edition on my Dell Mini 10v. I followed the instructions from the Ubuntu website and made a bootable USB drive using the universal USB installer for windows. I put the usb drive on my netbook and prompted the boot options to boot from the usb drive. Once I got to the installation screen and attempt to install ubuntu on my hard drive it goes blank for a few moments, and a wall of text floods my screen and it stops installing.

Ubuntu :: Boot Won't Load After Grub-install?

Aug 19, 2010

I messed it up with the grub in Ubuntu Netbook and the grub loader just prompt the "grub console" during the system boot.

However, I can boot manually by selecting manually the kernel:

Code:
kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.32-24-generic
boot

But, of course, that is not really practical for an everyday use.

I tried with the update-grub command, but nothing happens, the grub.cfg is there, with all the kernels list, but the grub loader won't load it! It is just ignoring it!

If I load the config file manually it prompts the grub command line again (with the "welcome" message), so, it IS loading the grub.cfg, but it's not working!!!

This is the content of my grub.cfg file:

Code:
#
# DO NOT EDIT THIS FILE
#
# It is automatically generated by /usr/sbin/grub-mkconfig using templates
# from /etc/grub.d and settings from /etc/default/grub

Ubuntu Installation :: Install RELEASE And Software Manager Are Tweaking Out

May 26, 2011

I installed Natty Narwhal from a pendrive I set up, which was a bit of a messy install to begin with. However, after booting into Ubuntu, this application called "Install RELEASE" appears. When I run it, it shows up just like I'm installing Ubuntu again. After following it through, it will stop and say that it must unmount /. It offers two options, Go Back, or Continue. Picking either does nothing. This hasn't seemed too big an issue. I can still run it fine. However, the Software Centre is an issue. Whenever I try to download something from it, I get this error:

OpenSUSE Install :: GRUB - Can't Load Up Ubuntu After Installing 11.3

Aug 17, 2010

Now I installed Opensuse on my system which already had Ubuntu 10.04 and Windows 7 on it. Whilst Opensuse's replacement Grub correctly identified Windows as an alternative system it did not do the same for Ubuntu. I've been tinkering around in menu.lst (after taking back ups) and I can't ever get Ubuntu running - I either get a Grub error 15 (file not found) or error 17 (unable to read partition). By booting on a live CD I can see that all the information is still there, I just can't for the life of me figure out how to get to it from Grub! Did Opensuse move the partitions around during install?

Ubuntu Installation :: GRUB Won't Load - Error 15 & 17

Jan 10, 2010

So after having performance issues with Karmic in ext4 I decided to install Hardy with ext3. Was blazing fast, epic, I loved it. But I wanted firefox 3.5 & all the other cool stuff Karmic has.. so I decide to install Karmic, but this time with ext3 instead of 4.

First installation: After the installation went fine, no errors while installing or anything. I remove the CD and reboot. "GRUB Loading, please wait.. Error 15" I did my googling, with the live CD to try and figure out a way of fixing this error. No luck. I did find out that the error is caused by the GRUB trying to load form the wrong drive. So I try to boot directly from the Karmic drive, Error 15. Try to boot directly from the Windows drive, Error 17.

This is the first time this has ever happened to me. First time installing Hardy, everything went great. Installing Jaunty, everything went great. Installing Karmic (for the first time) everything went great. Uninstalled Karmic and installed Hardy, everything went great. Uninstalled Hardy to install Karmic = FAIL!. I did a clean install every single time. The OS is being installed (clean) in the same drive.

A 40GB drive for Windows. A 200GB drive for Ubuntu +/home +swap, and a 120GB(FAT32) for storage.

I installed Karmic 3 times, yes.. 3 times. The last time I installed I removed both the 40GB & the 120GB drives. Leaving only the one I was going to use for Ubuntu, the 200GB drive. After the installation I rebooted and Karmic loaded without problems. I'm in Karmic right now and it isn't all sluggish like it was with ext4, guess my old drives aren't good with ext4 *sight*.

But I can't use my Windows drive. When trying to boot directly from it, it gives me "GRUB Error 17" - I have to disconnect the Ubuntu drive to boot into Windows. Quick question: What the **** is going on?

Someone help, please.. I'm tired of this ****.. and if I have to install Karmic one more time, I won't. I'll just give up and disconnect my Ubuntu drive, put it away and let it accumulate dust somewhere, seriously.. Someone help me correct this without having to install the OS again.

The GRUB error is while the GRUB is loading. It doesn't give me the option to select a OS.

And Today I installed the latest updates for 9.10, asked me to restart the computer, and now whenever I try to boot using the latest kernel GRUB keeps telling me to "Load kernel first". Ubuntu Installation :: Tricking Old GRUB To Load GRUB2

Jun 8, 2010

So I have an MBR that is Grub legacy,(from HardyHeron) and I cannot edit/upgrade this MBR. (I won't get into the reasons, other than I will mention SafeBoot).

I have a new encrypted LucidLynx Linux installation on partition 4 and an unencrypted /boot partition on partition #3.

When I boot up, I get the "Error 15" Grub error, which is expected as Grub legacy is looking for /boot/grub/stage2 or something like that and /boot/grub/stage2 does not exist in my GRUB2 installation in /boot/grub.

I thought if I could make a link from the GRUB2 binary of interest to /boot/grub/stage2, then maybe the GRUB legacy would be tricked into loading the GRUB2 binary.

what is the binary of interest in the GRUB2 installation that is the main binary?

Ubuntu Installation :: Grub Rescuce - Cannot Load Module

Jul 1, 2011

This is my fourth variant of trying to get Ubuntu installed and i have lost how mant different steps of troubleshooting I have done.

I could attach a long list of specs but will wait for someone to request what thewy need. At the Livecd Enviroment ATM

I have gone back to a basic partion layout because i thought Raid1 > LVM may be causing issues.

Now installing on a single 750GB Drive:
Partioned
4GB - Swap
50GB /
rest /home

Every install drops me at the grub rescue> prompt.

I can boot the livcd I installed from no problem.

Grub rescue troubles:

I can ls and find the partions of the drive lablled

(hd0,msdos3) - home partion
(hd0,msdos2) - root partion
(hd0,msdos1) - swap area

ls (hd0,msdos2)/boot/grub - Lists the .mod's and both Linux and normal are there.

Issue comands:

set prefix=(hd0,msdos2)/boot/grub set root=(hd0,msdos2)

insmod normal Error 'Invalid object type'

insmod linux Error 'Invalid object type'

Tried to point via full path

insmod (hd0,msdos2)/boot/grub/normal.mod [I]ALSO [/I ]linux.mod

Brings back the same error. Error 'Invalid object type'

Tried to load from /usr/lib/grub/i386-pc

Again! gives the same error.

Ubuntu Installation :: Grub - Setup: Warning: Attempting To Install GRUB To A Partition Instead Of The MBR - Install - Lvm - Luks - Raid - Karmic Server

Mar 27, 2010

I'm running Karmic Server with GRUB2 on a Dell XPS 420. Everything was running fine until I changed 2 BIOS settings in an attempt to make my Virtual Box guests run faster. I turned on SpeedStep and Virtualization, rebooted, and I was slapped in the face with a grub error 15. I can't, in my wildest dreams, imagine how these two settings could cause a problem for GRUB, but they have. To make matters worse, I've set my server up to use Luks encrypted LVMs on soft-RAID. From what I can gather, it seems my only hope is to reinstall GRUB. So, I've tried to follow the Live CD instructions outlined in the following article (adding the necessary steps to mount my RAID volumes and LVMs). [URL]

If I try mounting the root lvm as 'dev/vg-root' on /mnt and the boot partition as 'dev/md0' on /mnt/boot, when I try to run the command $sudo grub-install --root-directory=/mnt/ /dev/md0, I get an errors: grub-setup: warn: Attempting to install GRUB to a partition instead of the MBR. This is a BAD idea. grub-setup: error: Embedding is not possible, but this is required when the root device is on a RAID array or LVM volume.

Somewhere in my troubleshooting, I also tried mounting the root lvm as 'dev/mapper/vg-root'. This results in the grub-install error: $sudo grub-install --root-directory=/mnt/ /dev/md0 Invalid device 'dev/md0'

Obviously, neither case fixes the problem. I've been searching and troubleshooting for several hours this evening, and I must have my system operational by Monday morning. That means if I don't have a solution by pretty early tomorrow morning...I'm screwed. A full rebuild will by my only option.

/dev/sda4 - Logical extended partition
