Ubuntu Installation :: Install RELEASE And Software Manager Are Tweaking Out

May 26, 2011

I installed Natty Narwhal from a pendrive I set up, which was a bit of a messy install to begin with. However, after booting into Ubuntu, this application called "Install RELEASE" appears. When I run it, it shows up just like I'm installing Ubuntu again. After following it through, it will stop and say that it must unmount /. It offers two options, Go Back, or Continue. Picking either does nothing. This hasn't seemed too big an issue. I can still run it fine. However, the Software Centre is an issue. Whenever I try to download something from it, I get this error:

Ubuntu Installation :: Don't See "New Distribution Release" In Update Manager

Apr 1, 2010

I'm running 8.04 on my desktop system. I haven't used it in quite awhile, but I logged in today to find 100+ updates and figured I may as well update the system.

Then I realized that unlike my other Ubuntu machines, I don't have a "New distribution release is available" prompt in the update manager.

I went ahead and ran the 100 updates and rebooted and still don't see that option.

What's the best way to upgrade to 9.10?

Ubuntu Installation :: Cannot Seem To Install Latest Release Over 5.04

Feb 26, 2010

I downloaded the latest release, burned a disk and successfully booted. When it comes time to choose a partition I don't have the option of replacing the old release. I can install in parallel leaving both but can't use the whole disk. Interestingly enough I CAN replace the windows installation. Of course I already have Grub installed but I don't see how this would affect installing. I read the article here [URL] and it seems I may have missed a step. However it's implied I will lose the current Grub installation. Is that the case?

I can't install Ubuntu 11.04 32bit Desktop edition on my Dell Mini 10v. I followed the instructions from the Ubuntu website and made a bootable USB drive using the universal USB installer for windows. I put the usb drive on my netbook and prompted the boot options to boot from the usb drive. Once I got to the installation screen and attempt to install ubuntu on my hard drive it goes blank for a few moments, and a wall of text floods my screen and it stops installing.

Ubuntu :: Tweaking LVM2 For 4K Drives ?

Mar 18, 2011

Preface: I have just bought two new WD20EARS hard drives and have added them into my LVM and moved all my data from my old failing seagate drives to my new drives. I also have a WD10EARS in the LVM.
These are WD Caviar Green Power 4K hard drives.

Using Ubuntu 10.10 64bit and LVM2, everything is working but I want to know if I can tweak it for more performance. I am relatively new.

Questions:
1. How can I check if the 4K drives are aligned?
2. How can I check what block size LVM is using?
3. I didn't partition one of the WD20EARS when adding it to a LV, will this be problematic or effect performance? Can I partition it without losing the data that is on it now?
4. I heard XFS is better than EXT4 for large files and people tend to suggest using certain formats when they're talking about LV's, if I check the format of any of the hard drives it says they are lvm2...?

Ubuntu Networking :: Tweaking For Optimal Connection Speeds?

Oct 29, 2010

I'm wondering if there is anything I can do to get the best speeds possible. I pay for 16mb/s connection (with charter) and I was getting about 4mb/s. After upgrading firmware, and changing some encryption settings on my router, that went up to about 6mb/s. It's improvement, and I'm happy with that, but I'm looking for that 10 more mb/s

So, is there anything in Ubuntu to tweak to optimize connection speeds? Also, if it affects anything, I'm using a linksys WRT320N router. I was going to use the 5.0ghz band, but my wireless adapter is an 802.11gb, so I'm stuck with 2.4.

Ubuntu :: Tweaking Nautilus' File Sorting Order?

Dec 31, 2010

I've recently switched from Windows to Ubuntu and have a question regarding tweaking the character order Nautilus uses for alphabetical sorting. In my music/graphics/etc folder hierarchies, I have used a hyphen at the start as a 'hack' to 'sticky' some folders above the rest for quicker access. This worked fine in Windows, but Nautilus ignores a hyphen in it's sorting calculations. Is there anyway, simple or complex to replicate this behaviour in Nautilus?

build-essential
debhelper
dpkg-dev

This looks wrong to me, what could cause it to push loads of dev/build tools and the redhat package manager on me? Edit: Unticking these also unticks a "google-chrome-beta" update below. Does this mean they are now dependencies of that package?

Ubuntu Installation :: 10.10 Install Manager Causes Constant Reboot

Dec 30, 2010

I downloaded Ubuntu 10.10 in November 2010 and used the windows installer to install it next to my Windows 7 OS. I have a Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit. I am a beginner user and only Ubuntu when I need to run the terminal and text editor to create and test simple C++ files. Today, the install manager requested that I install critical updates so I left the default selected files and upgraded. The it asked to restart the system so I said yes. When it restarts it asks which OS to load:

1. Windows 7
2. Ubuntu

So I select Ubuntu then it displays some message about NTFS and quickly reboots (so i can't get to read the remaining message) the PC again. Uusually it would ask me to select the version of Ubuntu to load. Now my PC will only laod up Windows 7 so I can't get back into Ubuntu to dianose the problem.
