OpenSUSE Install :: Get A CLI Instead Of A Desktop After Uninstalling The Graphic Card Driver?
May 17, 2010I installed openSuse 11.2 64bit (DVD version). Later I installed the graphic card driver. Then I noticed that it's not working well due to an improper installation (didn't use the manual that you provided here). So I uninstalled the driver. Then, after reboot, instead of a regular desktop, I get a CLI and I'm requested to enter my login information. But in the boot menu, if I enter to the failsafe option, then everything works fine. How can I change the CLI to the regular desktop?

Mar 24, 2011I think i found out what was crashing my computer my Graphic card every time i start a game the computer goes down. I have a Ati Radeon 5570. Desktop Effects: Disabled System Info: 2d: fglrx 3d: ati I downloaded the Ati Drivers from the website after installing the Open Source not sure if that is causing a problem. Here are the steps i took. su - UNSUPPORTED="yes" sh ./ati-driver-installer-11-2-x86.x86_64.run --buildpkg SuSE/SUSE-autodetection zypper in fglrx* aticonfig --initial reboot It will crash whenever i start a game and randomly when i run ..... VLC etc.. Edit: Should i uninstall all opensource/ati and start over and if thats the case whats the best approach to this?

Jan 31, 2011I had an older version of Suse 11.0 and did an upgrade new install to Suse 11.3 (Awosme)!.The only problem is now when I boot I no longer see my GDM login screens.This was located in /usr/bin/gdmsetup. I think this has something to do with the newer version of GDM. Is there a way to get the older GDM back with the Login window functionality?

Jan 16, 2011I've got a problem to use intel graphic card and kde. When I enable opengl support it seems threa re refresh problems, botton now are visible, now not, it seems a blinking effect and when I move the pointer it seems kde try to re-draw the object but the object get invisible, so a relay mess. Xrender instead work but it's slow. Whit opensuse 11.2 all was ok. glxgears however shows me pretty good performance so I don't understand where is the problem.

Yast doesn't include a list of available cards, and the error I get in installation-network setup is that the kernel isn't present. The machine I'm installing this on is a Lenovo, in which there isn't a discrete ethernet card (it's in the motherboard), but my wireless card (a Cisco LINKSYS 802.11G) is a discrete card. Because I'm divorcing Microsoft for a number of valid reasons, I don't have Windows available on that box.

This computer does not have a 3D graphics system supported by VMware Workstation. My laptop model is the ASUS U52F-BBL9 btw.

From here I went to this page: SDB:Configuring graphics cards - openSUSE Its mentioned on this page that: Upon installing openSUSE, the X system's automatic configuration may have failed to properly configure the graphics correctly. Typically this results in either a black screen upon reboot, or the wrong resolution being displayed on the monitor.
I have none of these problems. But after searching for inability of desktop effects to become activated, I found that nVIDIA graphic card drivers are must for these effects. After clicking "My computer" icon on desktop, I found Display Info as following:
Vendor: nVidia Corporation
Model: G98 [GeForce 8400 GS]
2D driver: nouveau
3D driver: nouveau Gallium (7.8.2)
Can anyone tell me 'Is nouveau an alternative for nVIDIA'? Is this the reason for no wrong resolution or black screen upon boot. That means my computer graphics are working correctly. Then why does Desktop Effects are not getting enabled.
After searching for Kaffeine media player extra codecs to play media files, I incidentally found the following options: I opened Yast Control Center @ linux-o26a Software> Add on Products > installed Add-On Products > Community Repositories > clicking Next, this opened a window with "List of Online repositories" where there is an option of "NVIDIA Repository". I tried to watch a flash video on full screen; then the screen went black with some glitches and then my laptop suddenly shut down. I couldn't start opensuse back again, the screen goes black and freezes. I tried restarting in windows, and it freezes too. However, opensuse in failsafe mode works.
After that, i tried reinstalling opensuse. This time, i can start normally, but after a while, the screen shows some glitch (the updater applet looked wrong) and freezes. Windows isn't loading either, but opensuse failsafe mode is still working ok.
I guess it is a hardware problem (since windows also crashes). However, i would like some help to run "diagnostics" to my system.
My graphic card is a nvidia 8400 gs, and i am running opensuse 11.3
I was using the nvidia driver i found in opensuse-community (installed quite a long time ago); however, after i reinstalled, i was using the default driver. It is possible that my kernel was updated a couple of days ago (but i am not really sure of that)
CentOS 5 Hardware :: Unable To Install Graphic Card Driver For Dell Precision T3500?
Jul 28, 2010I have recently installed Centos. During the installation, I noticed that only sound was being tested during the installation. Once everything has been installed successfully. I can run Centos with no problem. However, when I tried to switch from one window (browser) to another. The display was slow. Thus, I suspected the driver for the graphic card of my PC is not being installed successfully. When I type /sbin/lspci | grep VGA in the terminal, I get the following output:

Then, I went to the dell support & driver site to download the driver. In the readme file, it is suggested to install dkms first before installing the graphics driver by typing rpm -ivh dkms-2.1.0.1-1.noarch.rpm
I managed to install the dkms without any error.However, when I use rpm to install the graphics driver as suggested by the readme file:
rpm -ivh dell-nvidia-190.42-1dkms_rhel5.3.x86_64.rpm
I get the following errors: error: Failed dependencies:
libX11.so.6()(64bit) is needed by dell-nvidia-190.42-1dkms_rhel5.3.x86_64
libXext.so.6()(64bit) is needed by dell-nvidia-190.42-1dkms_rhel5.3.x86_64[code]....
Since the above errors may be related to the missing packages then I use yum provides and install to find the missing packages. Even I try to install all the matched packages, i still cant install the driver for my graphic card. To be honest, i am not very sure whether I am doing the right things or not. how to solve this slow display problem when switching from one application to another.

- graphic card nVidia GeForce 9300M G
- processor Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU T5750 @ 2.00GHz
- 82801H (ICH8 Family) HD Audio Controller
- 3GB RAM and 300 GB memory
1) Originally, my laptop came with Windows Vista. Then I got a SUSE linux 11.0 CD, let it make a partition and installed Suse 11.0. Since Suse11.0 isn't updated any further I would like to change to Suse 11.3 (or whatever is newer). How should I proceed? (I can't find my old Windows Vista CDs and would like to KEEP THE PARTITION, thus formating all isn't an option)
2) In order to make a backup I bought a portable hard drive from iomega (USB 2.0). Then I noticed that it is formated in NTFS. SUSE 11.0 doesn't seem to like it --- what should I do? Can I reformat it somehow?
3) Suse 11.0 doesn't like my sound card. Thus I couldn't Skype or listen to music --- do you know if this problem is solved under Suse 11.3?

But just before I clicked accept after saying switch system packages to kde4 repo (the one in that thread) I noticed loads of the packages were older than those installed. In the list it has installed (available) and lots of them were all highlighted in red, and the installed version numbers were higher than the available, yet I'm running kde 4.6.0.
