Mar 30, 2010So I finally got ubuntu..I wanted to play team fortress 2.Runs great in wine etc.But 1 problem.It keeps saying my graphic card is outdated.I cant see anything.So I downloaded the driver from nvidia website.Followed some instructions.But it says cannot open binary file or something.Is there any other way to update graphic drivers.Cause I realy still want to play some windows games.Mount&blade, Atlantica online,team fortress 2 etc

May 17, 2010I installed openSuse 11.2 64bit (DVD version). Later I installed the graphic card driver. Then I noticed that it's not working well due to an improper installation (didn't use the manual that you provided here). So I uninstalled the driver. Then, after reboot, instead of a regular desktop, I get a CLI and I'm requested to enter my login information. But in the boot menu, if I enter to the failsafe option, then everything works fine. How can I change the CLI to the regular desktop?

Jul 28, 2010I have recently installed Centos. During the installation, I noticed that only sound was being tested during the installation. Once everything has been installed successfully. I can run Centos with no problem. However, when I tried to switch from one window (browser) to another. The display was slow. Thus, I suspected the driver for the graphic card of my PC is not being installed successfully. When I type /sbin/lspci | grep VGA in the terminal, I get the following output:

Then, I went to the dell support & driver site to download the driver. In the readme file, it is suggested to install dkms first before installing the graphics driver by typing rpm -ivh dkms-2.1.0.1-1.noarch.rpm
I managed to install the dkms without any error.However, when I use rpm to install the graphics driver as suggested by the readme file:
rpm -ivh dell-nvidia-190.42-1dkms_rhel5.3.x86_64.rpm
I get the following errors: error: Failed dependencies:
libX11.so.6()(64bit) is needed by dell-nvidia-190.42-1dkms_rhel5.3.x86_64
libXext.so.6()(64bit) is needed by dell-nvidia-190.42-1dkms_rhel5.3.x86_64[code]....
Since the above errors may be related to the missing packages then I use yum provides and install to find the missing packages. Even I try to install all the matched packages, i still cant install the driver for my graphic card. To be honest, i am not very sure whether I am doing the right things or not. how to solve this slow display problem when switching from one application to another.

All hardware OK, sound OK, Network/WiFi OK, nVIDIA Proprietary drivers OK, KDE Composite OK, Desktop effects OK.But when initializing, the messages pass very slow!My lilo framebuffer settings are 1024x768x64 (Code 791, 317 in Hex), my Graphics card is an nVIDIA GeForce 9100 M G (256Mb), but yet, I can see it refreshing like an image loading in 56Kbps connection.
I really would like to use framebuffer during boot (Oh, come on... The little penguin is kinda neat :-), so I'll ask... Is there a way to use my graphic driver in framebuffer, or make it faster?

Server Type : HP ProLiant DL160 G6
Raid Card: Smart Array B110i SATA RAID
Disk : SATA 250G * 2

Apr 10, 2011I am trying to install NVIDIA graphics drivers. I can execute the .run but it comes up with an error the X Server is in use and needs to be closed.
I have tried to run
Ctrl Alt Backspace
and
sudo /etc/init.d/gdm stop
But the terminal requests the root password and I can not enter anything for the password in the line. If I go to the next line and enter anything the password fails.

Mar 31, 2011I tried to install the nvidia driver using yum. I had the nouveau graphic driver installed. I didn't follow any tutorial I just installed the nvidia driver over the installed one. Thinking that yum would take care of everything for me. When I rebooted I get as far as "registering binary handler for windows applications" I can still log on using alt+f2 and mount the file system using chroot but I cannot get any network access. When I use netstat -nr nothing is configured. I can't ping my router or any other computer on the network.I figure I should disable the nouveau driver and try to use the nvidia tutorial by leigh123linux to get the desktoop up again but I need net access to do that.I have no idea how to get that done. I have tried, ifdown/ifup, /etc/init.d/networks restart, service network stop/start/restart, ifconfig eth0.

May 11, 2010I am setting up a system that I was recently given and am having some problems with the ATI card configuration/driver (I think).
THE SYSTEM
System is P4 3.0Ghz, 1GB RAM, 200GB SATA with new full install of Slackware 13, Fluxbox WM/DE.

I have read a lot of things that seem confusing to me, but I have set it up mostly with info from slackwiki.org, and after reading various threads here at LQ.
I am using an xorg.conf created with Xorg -configure, with the radeon driver and have added the DRI section and enabled options per the above URL.
THE SYMPTOMS
First, X starts and I can run glxgears and get a frame rate of 3100+.
But glxinfo seems incorrect:

I see no "direct rendering: yes" as seems to be required (am I missing something?).
Most things seem to work such as video playback from DVD and Flash.
At boot the vesa modes do not work and I have to use vga=normal, which is no big problem, although a better framebuffer mode would be nice if possible.
But the first big problem I hit is running Blender. When it starts my screen goes blank with just the mouse cursor visible and moving. To get out of this I can kill X or ctl-alt-Fx to get a new login and kill the blender process. Oddly, I found I can also alt-F2 (Open a Run dialog in Fluxbox) which opens with a running Blender behind it - but any attempt to interact with the blender window reverts to the blank screen with mouse cursor.
I believe this to be due to the lack of DRI mostly because of a similar problem once encountered on another system - but am open to other suggestions.
But I think I need to better understand and configure the drivers for this video card before troubleshooting any applications.
So, I guess my questions would be:
1. Is the radeon driver the best choice for this card?
2. Are there advantages/disadvantages to using the ATI driver instead? (Is there a slackbuild for the proprietary driver?)
3. Can someone point me to any better sources of info for ATI cards/drivers used under Slackware?

Jan 17, 2011anyone tried to run wifi-card based on this chip? In coming days I will build myself a proprietary driver for 2.6.27.7 kernel. I mostly aware about patches for wpa_supplicant. Should I use a source for wpa_supplicant from slackware 12.2 distro or a new version? Do you know about any other prerequisities (requirements, dependencies) for building this proprietary driver?

I can't open a new terminal and control+alt+backspace won't work.
what can i do? is there a log file for X which details the initialization of it?
Ubuntu Installation :: PC Without Graphic Card?
Feb 14, 2011I installed ubuntu but when I first tried to login with my correct passwords it goes in a loop and prompt me to log in again. I went to recovery mode and selected safe mode then I was able to log in without any further prompts. As a result of what happened, I unlocked the login screen and changed the setup to allow me to log in automatically and in safe mode only. I am now stuck to login in safe mode only. I tried to unlock the login screen to change to default but no chance. If there is no graphic card in the PC would that have an effect on memory or login?
