OpenSUSE Install :: Keeping An Older Kernel
Feb 4, 2010I used to keep a back level kernel on all my systems along with the latest upgraded kernel. How is that done using Yast/zypper? I don't see an option to keep the older version.

OpenSUSE Install :: 11.2 - Install An Older Kernel As Recent Kernel Is Not Compatible?
Feb 11, 2010A few days ago yast did update my computer to a new kernel-desktop 2.6.31.12-0.1.1.
My mainboard is an ASUS P4P800-VM with Intel ICH5 chipset. This new kernel is not able, to poweroff my computer. Older kernels were able to poweroff the computer.
How can I roll back to the older kernel? Yast does only offer the recent kernel.
In /boot there are only files of the recent kernel.
ASUS P4P800
Intel Pentium 4 HT, 3000 MHz, Frontside 800 MHz/Cache 1 MB
3 GB Ram
AGP nVidia 7600GS/512 MB, nVidia driver 190.53, installed from yast.
PCI WLan TP-Link 951N (Atheros chipset, WLan N, driver ath9 was automatically installed)

Jul 6, 2010I'm trying to truncate a postfix Maildata directory for one of our users. I want to be able to move any files older than <n> days to a new location, but also copying the relevant directory structure. This should be doable in the one comman. I've used find to locate the files, and mv to move them, but I can't figure out how to build the directoryt structure on the fly in the new location.
This is what I have so far:

Nov 13, 2010I'm looking to install an older kernel in Maverick - something like 2.6.32 maybe? Just wondering if there's a way to do it without compiling myself. I upgraded my system without checking everything. I use it as a MythTV box and the 2.6.35 kernel breaks my remote control in a manner that appears to be unfixable at the moment, if the forums on the problem are right. I figure an older kernel will get me out of the jam, but I'm not sure how to go about it (there aren't any in the standard repos).

Mar 3, 2010I am building a series of custom kernels...for one of them i am using a kernel that is older than my currently installed ones.
I am using rpm to install this kernel and it will not install, period. i don't get why i can't install this....what does it matter that i am installing an older kernel? and why is fedora/rpm designed to not let me do this?

There should be an easy way to get around this, but i haven't figured it out yet. i've googled around, no luck. i bounce between kernel versions all the time without problems on my system, so why is rpm setup for strict versions on a kernel? and is there no way around this, and i just have to delete all three of those kernels, i don't really want to. 2 of them are awesome and i shouldn't have to build them again, that would be complete crap! and i wouldn't have this problem on my debian setup, so why fedora? (i generally think fedora is better)

Sep 4, 2010I just got it all set up and it has everything I need for what i do on my computer and it does alot better and smoother. So now im convinced linux KDE is where the party is at! HAaha so I want to remove windows 7 from my notebook and have openSUSE as the only OS running on it. Can anybody help me with removing windows 7 and leaving openSUSE on it? I was also hopeing that i'll be able to use the disk space with opensuse that my windows 7 is currently useing.

Jan 6, 2010I managed a first installation of SUZE 11.2 from a mag distro - downloaded the iso file - burned the dvd, installed again, looking to retain the host name for this computer. But for the second time I get a linuxXXXXX sort of host name! No chance to set my preferred one up. I like what I've seen of SUZE so far and am happy to move to it sort of permanently. This legacy hostname helps me keep sane in networking matters though and I have yet to configure a networked laserprinter and add another computer. Can I re-set the hostname to my selection without harming the whole set-up?

Feb 23, 2011I'm upgrading to 11.3 (from 11.2) and will be keeping my current home partition. Will this keep my browser favorites? Also, I read somewhere that in order for things to work properly after upgrading (without reformatting my /home partition) that I would have to keep the same username AND user UID...? Is that true? How do I make sure I have the same UID if so...?
I purposely set up a seperate home partition so that when I changed distro's or upgraded I would still have my files, and some settings intact. (I switched distros a lot when I first started using Linux.) I set up a "bin" folder (in home folder) that had a couple of programs I had downloaded to keep from having to set up and configure everything all over again every time I felt like changing distro's as well.

Jun 14, 2011I have a dual boot windows XP/OpenSuse 11.3 system running from a hard drive. They are both 32 bit in spite of the fact that the system can run 64 bit.
I would like to upgrade to Windows 7 64 bit (the wife insists, not yet a Linux possibility) and OpenSuse 11.4 64 bit, but having the programme files on an SSD for faster loading, with my data files on the existing hard drive.
I'm happy with the notion of getting the SSD going as a dual boot system. With Windows, as I understand it, it can tell it fairly easily where to look for the "my documents" folder on the hard drive.
However, the Home directory in Linux is not quite the same. How (if it's possible) could I run the SSD but use my existing Home directory on the hard drive?

Jun 2, 2010my Windows partition and the future Suse partition will be on different HDDs, so this should ease things a bit. Suse is on HDD 2 and Windows on HDD 1 HDD 2 will be the default Master drive, so I want GRUB to give me to option to boot either on Suse, either on Windows 7 I want to keep Windows 7 boot manager intact. I.E. If I switch HDD 1 to the Master drive, it will boot directly into Win 7.
What I wanted to do is:
Unplugg Windows drive
Install Suse
Replugg Windows drive and manually add the entry to GRUB
if I keep them both plugged, Linux will not touch HDD 1 MBR?

May 23, 2011Having read several threads and received excellent previous advice there are just a couple of points I want to check please before proceeding on laptop. I want to upgrade to 11.4 from 11.2. My disk setup is as follows:-
Disk /dev/sda: 120.0 GB, 120034123776 bytes
240 heads, 63 sectors/track, 15505 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 15120 * 512 = 7741440 bytes
Disk identifier: 0x462d462c

If I select existing /home root and swap partitions, format root but prevent formatting of /home and use a different user ID I believe that will leave my existing data intact and will allow me to trial new os. Is this correct approach? If all goes well and when I have new system working correctly, what is best way make old user id date accessible. Can I simply create my old id on new system and will that allow me to access data when I log on with that id?
Second question; at present I have the ability to boot to openSUSE, OS/2 and windoze. (It used to be done entirely by Boot Manager but during my last Linux installation I messed this up a bit so now machine boots to grub and this offers all three operating systems but chain loads Boot Manager if I select OS/2)
When I do the new installation what should I select to retain this setup so that I still have access to windoze and OS/2 but when selecting linux have new 11.4 system run.

1) Originally, my laptop came with Windows Vista. Then I got a SUSE linux 11.0 CD, let it make a partition and installed Suse 11.0. Since Suse11.0 isn't updated any further I would like to change to Suse 11.3 (or whatever is newer). How should I proceed? (I can't find my old Windows Vista CDs and would like to KEEP THE PARTITION, thus formating all isn't an option)
2) In order to make a backup I bought a portable hard drive from iomega (USB 2.0). Then I noticed that it is formated in NTFS. SUSE 11.0 doesn't seem to like it --- what should I do? Can I reformat it somehow?
3) Suse 11.0 doesn't like my sound card. Thus I couldn't Skype or listen to music --- do you know if this problem is solved under Suse 11.3?

But just before I clicked accept after saying switch system packages to kde4 repo (the one in that thread) I noticed loads of the packages were older than those installed. In the list it has installed (available) and lots of them were all highlighted in red, and the installed version numbers were higher than the available, yet I'm running kde 4.6.0.

Jul 15, 2010My company offers Linux preloads in RHEL, Fedora and Ubuntu. I have Fedora 13 installed on my laptop. I want to install it on a desktop but the 2.6.33 kernel hangs the desktop when the Fedora 13 or Ubuntu Lucid DVD boots. I have the Ubuntu Jaunty preload on the desktop but would prefer Fedora. The preload includes a few apps for my job that aren't included with Ubuntu. Is it possible to select an older kernel to boot to and/or use that during the install? I think it is the SCSI controller causing this. I have the same model machine at home configured the same way except the onboard SCSI is disabled, I am using SATA drives in it.

Feb 3, 2011I just had a hard drive failure on my mythtv box that I had been running F14 on. I reinstalled F14 and just got about everything up and running like normal again except that I upgraded the kernel by mistake when I was upgrading everything else to current levels. The problem is that I run a hauppauge pvr150 on this mythtv box, and the code for capturing on this card is broken on the latest kernel version. I have the kernel headers and development files installed for the newest kernel that I can't really use, but I didn't install the kernel headers for the older kernel before the upgrade. Now, I am looking for a way to forcefully install the older kernel development files so that I can compile my the proprietary nvidia drivers against it for my adapter. I downloaded the rpm files from the fedora 14 repository directly. Is there an option for rpm that I can use to force the installation?

Sep 1, 2011I've recently upgraded to Natty (11.04).The problem that is now occurring, and reoccurring, is like this:- Computer boots, but hangs on a purple screen (nothing on it). Nothing happens, after 15 minutes or so I give up waiting and hard reset.- Boot via Grub (holding shift) into recovery-mode: works fine, but I want the GUI, so I reboot.- After reboot the system hangs again, as mentioned before.- Hard reset again, and booting a previous kernel (2.6.32.8 ): works fine!- Restart again, boots in most recent kernel (2.6.38.10): works fine now.- Try to shutdown/restart again, problem re-occurs every time. So I use the workaround with the extra startup with the older kernel again.and finally typing this.

2400, 2 gig RAM, 160 Gig IDE disks - SuSE on disk 2) (OpenSuSE 11.1 with the latest kernel works perfectly. This install is on a spare HDD prior to doing a full install on my usual HDD.)
When I try to install SuSE 11.2 from DVD, the load kernel operation hangs at 97% (using both normal and safe kernel), however, I can install from live CD without any problem. I have tried the same DVD on a few "older" machines and had the same problem. I initially thought it was the actual DVD but re-burning has the same problem. I have also tried another DVD writer - same problem.

But only the oldest works. With the new update there is a new kernel version (2.6.32-24) that possibly will not boot (like previous 2.6.32-* kernels) and also I expect that, as in previous updates, the oldest kernel will become inaccessible, thus rendering my ubuntu unbootable.
