OpenSUSE Install :: Boot 11.4 On Dualboot Nvdia G7600 Based System - Fresh Install "system Console Stolen At Line"

Apr 22, 2011

I tried to update one of my home machines with a fresh install. This is far from new to me so I did not expect any problem. But I was proven wrong. First: did install the system as usual. First anomaly: system blocked during the install process but did restart it flawlessly one I tried to eject the DVD from the player. It needed actually that intervention to retake working. It then went to install and froze during the first system start. I rebooted with failsafe settings, it then correctly configured. I reached a beautiful desktop. I performed the updates from the update repository and I joined the nvidia proprietary driver repository (which updated to the G02 driver).

I then rebooted the machine and now I am in trouble. In normal mode the system (dual boot Opensuse, XP) does not boot at all and freezes immediately after hitting enter as before. In safe mode it goes further but does not reach X anymore. It blocks with the following line statement: "system console stolen at line 266". I then tried "startx". But the system goes into a scrolling loop that does not allow me to read the output. how to get at least the error message of the loop? I read some line passing by that the system might have an X11 authorization problem.

Athlon Phenom X4 905e
Nividea G7600 graphic card
Former system installed and running flawlessly: 11.1

General :: Boot Into The Command Line/console From Grub 2?

It used to be with (old) grub you could hit a function key and add a runlevel option to boot a console, but I don't know how to do this here, wanting not to edit the grub config file, as seems the only apparent option: I'm trying to boot into SimplyMepis where there is no rescue menu option, so need the prompt?

Programming :: Copy And Replacing Specific Line From File1 To File2 Line By Line

Mar 22, 2011

I have two files, file1.traj and file2.traj. Both these files contain identical data and the data are arranged in same format in them. The first line of both files is a comment.

At line 7843 of both files there is a cartesian coordinate X, Y and Z ( three digits ). And at line 15685 there is another three digits. The number of lines in between two cartesian coordinates are 7841. And there are few hundreds of thousands of lines in a file.

What I need to do is copy the X Y Z coordinate (three digits) from file1.traj at line 7843 and paste into file2.traj at the same line number as in file1.traj. The next line will be 15685 from file1.traj and replace at line 15685 at file2.traj. And I dont want other lines (data) in file2.traj get altered. This sequence shall be going on until the end of the file. Means copy and substitude the selected lines from file1.traj into file2.traj.

I tried to use paste command but I cant do for specified line alone.

Here i showed the data format in the file. I used the line number for clarity purpose.

OpenSUSE Install :: Error ""Creating Device Modes With Udev 2.0436224] [drm: I915_diver_load]*ERROR*Detected Broken BIOS With 262140/2644kb Of Video Memory Stolen"

Aug 18, 2010

I tried to install OpenSuse 11.3 on my brand new pc, which already had Windows 7 proffessional in it, and I went step by step through the installation without changing anything. It didn't work. I tried for a second time and this error message kept popping up: "Creating device modes with udev 2.0436224] [drm: i915_diver_load]*ERROR*Detected broken BIOS with 262140/2644kb of video memory stolen. 2.0436224] [drm: i915_diver_load]*ERROR*Disabling GEM(try reducing stolen memory or updating the BIOS to fix)"

And then a lot of letters and numbers wich make no sense to me. Now the only way I can initiate OpenSuse is with the OSuse boot dvd and on failsafe mode.

Ubuntu Installation :: Boot From USB Stops At Copyright Line During Boot, No Error?

Aug 30, 2010

I'm trying to install Ubuntu on a computer with Vista SP2, my BIOS supports booting from a USB drive. Ive used unetbootin and Universal USB installer to setup the ISO on the drive, as well as trying Ubuntu version 10.04 and 9.10. The problem is that during the boot it stops at a line reading "SYSLINUX 3.86 2010-04-01 CBIOS Copyright ...", no error messages, it doesn't appear to be frozen as there is a blinking cursor under this line. The boot performs normally up to this point, it happens when, during a normal boot to vista, it says "boot from CD/DVD" then loads windows. It shouldn't be a hardware issue, the computer is pretty new, and I had an older version of Ubuntu install on it temporarily.

Networking :: Device Is Configurable Only Over Console Line?

Oct 18, 2010

I have a configuration file for a network device(2100 lines). This device is configurable only over console line. If I copy chunks of those lines into terminal(I use minicom), there will be mistakes (sometimes some characters missing, space characters added etc). Hardware flow control and software flow control doesn't help either(as I use RS232-to-USB converter, I'm even not sure, if RTS and CTS signals are implemented). I tried with cu utility, but same issues appeared. There will be mistakes even if I copy in ~100 line parts. What causes those missing/added characters? Is there a terminal emulation program under Linux, which supports pausing before each byte/line transfer?

Ubuntu :: Lucid Command Line Ver Won't Boot After Install?

Sep 1, 2010

I did a clean install of Lucid from the alternate installer, onto a generic Intel/Celeron PC box. I used a command line only install, and used the entire hard disk; there's no other OS and no other partitions on the disk. Install goes along and finishes fine, reboots, and I can log in. But if I call sudo reboot, or shut down the machine then restart it, the boot process hangs. I see the POST screen, then a flashing cursor on a black screen for a few seconds, then the monitor goes into standby. I see no messages or any kind of output to the screen. I get the same problem using the Lucid Server installer and also when installing on a different box (Dell Intel/Celeron). I also tried running all the updates after install but before any kind of reboot...same thing.

This only seems to be happening using a command line only version of Lucid. Lucid GNOME/XUBUNTU install and work OK on both boxes. I can boot from a CD or USB key, but not sure where to look or what to check.

Slackware :: Rxvt Or Any Other Console Doesn't Make A New Line At Edge Of Window

Aug 17, 2010

I have a slight problem. Whenever I type something in rxvt, and sometimes it's a loooong something, I end up having to make it span multiple lines, as do you, probably. Anyway, my problem is that if I'm in any console at all, (aside from the TTY console and such) and I try to go multiple lines, this is what happens:

Code:

[root@SectionI13] > aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa
After the first pass...

Code:

aaaaaaaectionI13] > aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa
And after the second pass...

Code:

aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa
aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa

Now, I'd be fine and dandy with this, if it wasn't so hard to figure out what I was typing after the first pass, because it's just plain hard to understand a command when there's the second half of it in front of the first half of it.

Slackware :: Get Standard PS/2 Wheel Mouse Working On The Console Command Line

Aug 13, 2010

I am trying to get my standard PS/2 Wheel mouse working on the Console command line, and seem to be having major problems getting it to work.

For the record, I am NOT talking about X, Xterm's or any Graphical Interface, my mouse wheel works fine in these environments.

I am purely concerned with getting the mouse wheel to work on the Console.

After many hours of reading forum posts about getting the wheel to work on the Console, this is what I have tried to date:

1. I have downloaded and installed every version of gpm I could find in the hope that one would utilise the wheel. (No Success).

2. I compiled and installed the latest version of gpm stable (1.20.6) to see if the wheel would work with it. (No Success).

3. I have tried setting up gpm-1.20.6 as a repeater to X, using every string I could find (msc, ms3, pnp .. etc), as well as every /dev entry in xorg.conf /dev/mouse, /dev/input/mice/, dev/gpmdata/, /dev/psaux ... etc). (No Success).

4. Created directories and configured a gpm.conf to both /etc/ and /etc/conf.d/ in the hope that gpm was looking for them there (read that in one forum or another). (No Success).

5. I then tried to find mouse wheel patches for gpm, and then downloaded the relevant version source gpm.***.tar.gz to go with these patches. Nearly every single one of the patches failed to apply (using patch -p1 >), except for one version I tried that did apply ... but then failed to make (stating that the source had a different signedness or some such thing) ??? (No Success).

6. I looked into IMwheel, but that seemed to be a purely X program that was a lazy way of writing ZAxisMapping in xorg.conf. (No Success).

So now I am stumped ... Does anyone know if if is possible to get:

a). A Wheel Mouse Patch for a recent version of gpm (1.20.6) that will actually apply, and then make?

b). A prepackaged recent version of gpm-1.20.6.tgz that has been patched to enable the wheel that I can use?

c). Any other information that may enable the mouse wheel to start working on the console.

OpenSUSE Install :: GRUB Error 17 On Single Boot System 11.4

Jun 29, 2011

I have a single boot system that was working great until this morning when it locked up. I was working as I always do when the system stopped responding completely. CTRL+F1 did not work to allow me into the back so I could log in and see what was happening.

CTRL+SHIFT+SysRq did not recover the system or interrupt what ever was causing the lock up.

SSH from another system failed as the client did not respond

So I had to do a hard boot and when I did I got this:

GRUB Loading stage1.5.

GRUB loading, please wait...
Error 17

Again this is a single boot system no Windows other than in VMWare inside the install. It is a multi drive with RAID set up workstation that I have at work. The short of it I am sole IT support as our companies ITS will not support Linux. In 5 years of operations with Linux at work this is my first issue, and I can't figure it out. I already tried the PartedMagic solution (ref = Re-Install Grub Quickly with Parted Magic) and that didn't work.

I re-installed the system completely even going to the extent to change my partition scheme just to make sure that wasn't the problem (which doesn't make sense as the system had been running for 46 days non-stop without a problem). Upon reboot after performing a complete security update I got the Error 17 message again.

Below is the output of fdisk -l

Code:
Welcome - Parted Magic (Linux 2.6.30.6-pmagic)

Most of the filesystem tools and partition programs featured by Parted Magic include man pages. To read a manual page, simply type man and the name of the tool. (Examples: 'man ntfsprogs' or 'man fdisk')

General :: Setting Command-line Console Resolution Vbeinfo In Grub2 Does Not Report All Resolutions?

May 6, 2010

I have a Asus EEE PC 1005P which I installed a Command-line system on using the Alternate Installer CD of Ubuntu Lucid Lynx. Altough I think this is a general linux and grub2 question. I do not have (or want) the X Window System installed. I want to change my console screen resolution (not inside X) to 1024x600. But it isn't reported when I use vbeinfo inside grub:

grub> vbeinfo
VBE info: version: 3.0 OEM software rev: 1.0
total memory: 8128 KiB
List of compatible video modes:
Legend: P=Packed pixel, D=Direct color, mask/pos=R/G/B/reserved
0x112: 640 x 480 x 32 Direct, mask: 8/8/8/8 pos: 16/8/0/24

Does it mean I have the driver? how to set it to 1024 x 600 in grub2?

OpenSUSE Install :: 11.3 X86-64 & Vt1828s - No Sound From Mic Or Line In

Oct 25, 2010

I have just built a new system with an Asus p7p55d-e M/B. The on board sound support is a via vt1828s. I get sound from Flash, CD, DVD but not from analog mic or analog line in The sound card is detected as 5 series/ 3400 series chipset HDA. I am not sure that this is the correct choice. Support for the VT1828 was added in kernel 2.2.33 and alsa 1.0.22. OpenSUSE 11.3 is up level from this and so the device should be supported. I started YAST and selected add a sound card and searched for VT1828 and it is not in the list. The list does not contain any of the via chipsets that were added at the same time.

Does anyone know if the 5 series / 3400 series includes support for the VT1828? If it does, what do I have to do to get the analog input working? If it does not, which kernel module contains the support for the VT1828? I also have a Logitech C310 webcam and get no sound from that. I do not know if this is a related problem. I am leaving the webcam sound problem until I fix the VT1828 problem. I am using KMIX to as the mixer and I did deselect mute and set the volume to max. According to the multimedia system configuration, the general preferred capture device is HDA Intel (VT1828s analog). I have found hundreds of things via google that indicate that it should work and some distributions seem to have had it working and then killed it with an upgrade. I have not found anything that tells me how to make it work.

OpenSUSE Install :: Keep Iso's Updated - Can't Use Command Line

Jun 25, 2011

Doing an install of Suse 11.4 --- and the screen runs off the monitor to the right. A little guess word with the tab key and I could move through the install process by tabbing three times after the ""help" button. As I'm writing this the machine rebooted after initial load and the screen is okay - and I can see the abort-back-next buttons now. But really, what's with that? That's just so unprofessional. Hopefully the dev team reads these forums since there isn't any easily discoverable way to communicate with them. And you don't keep the iso's updated? The BETA of Firefox 4?? Really? Then I can only update to 4.01 from the repository? so I download an unpack the 5.0 from Mozilla -- and find out ./configure no longer works. The archive extractor still doesn't have an "install package" option anywhere, and now I can't use the command line either?
