I built a HTPC using Zotac ION ITX A 330 (has an onboard Atheros AR9285 according to lspci) and the plan was to connect this to my Netgear WNR2000 using WiFi. The OS is Ubuntu 10.04. I can connect to the router fine. Signal strength stable between 65-72% so this shouldn't be an issue (other hardware including two laptops running Vista (DELL XPS) and OSX (MBP) connect just fine at the same location). I stay connected for everything between five to 60 minutes then i lose the connection. According to the syslog i get deauthenticated due to reason 2. I've tried the backport modules.I've also tried wicd instead of the standard gnome Network manager. No difference.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI've had 11.4/KDE working pretty well on dual boot Asus G73SW for a few weeks now. Only issues were the FN-* functions that control keyboard lights and whatnot but no biggie since the essential worked. The last couple of days the update notification was indicating 1,201 updates to be made. Yeah it seemed extreme but I googled around and checked the forums and there was nothing related. I figured I might be missing some packages since I installed from the live KDE CD (still 1202 updates!!!???). So I updated. Big mistake!!!!! Ever since NetworkManager cannot connect to the internet, be it wired or wireless.
Initially it could not even see my home network but it picked it up after I removed the plasmoid from the panel and reinstalled it. However it doesn't respond when I click the network icon and still no connection.I managed to get eth0 working with ifup but not wifi. The last part of network manager log file is quoted below. I can send the whole thing to whoever is interested. I can't make sense of it but maybe someone on the forums can.

Running CentOS 5.5. NetworkManager is able to connect to wifi after logging in as root in the GUI and entering password to unlock keyring. What do I need the change to get NetworkManager to connect the wifi at bootup?
View 2 Replies View RelatedThe auto connect feature of NetworkManager Applet (version 0.7.997) isn't working on my system. If the WiFi connection dies, Network Manager doesn't detect that the connection has been lost and try to reestablish the connection. I have to manually click on the WiFi hotspot to reestablish the connection. This appears to be the case both while the computer is running and when I first boot it up (i.e. when booting, if the first attempt at establishing a WiFi connection doesn't succeed, Network Manager doesn't retry or try another hotspot). Is this "normal" behavior for Network Manager? If not, does anyone know a fix? Here's some more info about my system:

Until 10.10 the NetworkManager applet/widget has not been able to:
- edit the default "auto eth0" network profile
- create/edit system wide network profiles (wired, wireless, mobile broadband)
The networkmanager itself can do it, of course, since long. The GNOME/XFCE counterpart also used to work flawlessly since long.
I just got my Airlink AWLH5025 to connect using the instructions provided by Gentoo Wiki's article on Wireless Networking. I'd like to use NetworkManager, but I'm running into problems - launching it kills my connection, and even though it finds my network it won't connect to it.
View 2 Replies View Relatedjust installed Debian 8.2 on my ThinkPad X230 laptop using netinst. I installed only basic system and then install packages I need manually. Now I stuck with NetworkManager and Wi-Fi. NetworkManager and its applet (package network-manager-gnome) installed, I can connect to my Wi-Fi network, but after reboot a dialog asking for passphrase for keys appeared and even after entering correct passphrase NetworkManager does not connect to the Wi-Fi, so I need to connect it manually.
View 4 Replies View Relatedi recently got an msi wind U100x running on linux suse enterprise 10 sp1. i am totally new to linux and i believe that msi wind is not helping. i remember at some point seeing an icon in my toolbar to indicate available wifi networks, but it disappeared a few weeks ago, and i was never able to locate it again. out of dispair i reset the computer to factory settings. all i have is "no network connection" icon, and when you click on it you have both enable networking and enable wireless.
i read somewhere in help that i should have a knetworkmanager, but i can't find it anywhere. all i see in my control center is network card, and when i go in there, i go to 'user controlled with networkmanager' and i see 'micro-star international ethernet controller not configured'. before i reset to factory settings i used to have a wireless card as well.
in a word: i am totally lost and don't know where to start. any step by step to help me connect again?
I had to uninstall a proprietary ATI driver because it wrecked my X server. Apparently I removed the wrong package, because now the X server won't even start, even with the "nomodeset" flag.
QUESTION 1.How can I configure WiFi on the command line with NetworkManager or ifup, whichever is easier?
QUESTION 2.Which packages do I need to download to restore the X server?
For the past almost year, once in a while my wifi won't work.At home,I use an ethernet cable. When I go out, or am out of town, about 1/3 times the wifi won't connect, and won't even find access points. Once this happens, no matter how many times I restart, the wifi won't work. The ONLY way I can get it to work again is if I reboot with the ethernet cord plugged into the laptop and into a router/switch/hub. My neighbor (the one who got me into Ubuntu) is a pretty experienced linux network admin who looked a my laptop and has no idea what is causing this. I've attached my syslog log entry for the last time this happened. Does anyone know why this is? I LOVE ubuntu but I may need to switch back to Windows because I NEED wifi to work. You will see in the logfile I tried connecting to two different APs. The one that always works is the second one, called linksys.

I just recently installed Ubuntu 9.10 on a dell laptop. My WiFi connection that I've been using on the same computer for years is not working when I log on. However if I run the burnt image cd and choose the option "Use Ubuntu without making any changes to your computer" I am asked if I want install proprietary drivers. If I activate one "Broadcom STA" I can connect to the wireless connection in my house. When I am using the version installed on my laptop it doesn't ask me if I want to install the drivers and it doesn't even find them when I go to hardware drivers under system. So to sum it up I can get connection when I run Ubuntu from the cd but not when I run the Ubuntu on my laptop.

Anyway, the wireless adapter, an rt5390sta isn't working and have tried downloading the adapter from the ratech web site and it will not compile. Anyone have any ideas on how to get this working. I tried another solution which was mentioned on the forums here of removing the options from the network manager in preferred applications and that didn't work either.

Yesterday while me and my friend were in the train, we tried to set up a wireless network and play frozen bubble. So one of us makes a new wireless connection, the other connects to it, but we observed this: When the creator of the wifi network opens the game and tries to start the multiplayer, it says that it cannot connect to the server. On the other computer there is no problem with it. We tried to change the host of the connection, but the result was the same (the host computer couldn't connect to the "server")
View 2 Replies View RelatedI've recently invested in a new netbook, a Zoostorm Freedom XL and decided to install the Ubunto Netbook Remix alongside the Windows 7 starter edition which comes preinstalled.Everything went amazingly smoothly, and I now have a 99% working system - the only issue is the wireless networking. The wifi adapter doesn't seem to be being recognised by the Ubuntu install at all, to the extent that even using the wifi hotkey the wifi indicator does not come on and I cannot access wireless networks.
I've done a bit of reading, and it seems that ndiswrapper may be the solution I'm looking for, however I'm not entirely sure how to go about implementing this. The network card, in Windows, is simply recognised as "802.11n Wireless Lan Card" and the device manager properties suggest it's manufactured by Ralink and using driver version 3.0.8.0.
Installation was flawless. My WiFi router is up and I'm able to connect my Windows laptop. Once I login to Ubuntu, WiFi doesn't even start to scan and even if I go into 'network connections' to add the SSID manually, no luck. I just get the notification that I'm not connected, no other errors.

I've been running ubuntu on my Asus 1001ha netbook for half a year or so. I ran Karmic for at while, wifi working and all, accepted the recommended updates when Update Manager popped up and everything was fine until one day I let Update Manager do it's thing and my wifi stopped working.. Lycid had just come out that same week, so I thought "screw it" and installed 10.04 instead..
So I've been running 10.04 for a couple of months now, everything working fine, including the wifi - until today.. Update Manager suggested some upgrades, I accepted and *pouf* my wifi is gone again..
That's the second time Update Manager knocks out my wifi, any way to roll back todays update or how to the the wifi working again?
I've recently installed Jaunty on my Acer 5920 and I'm in love. Yet I can't get the wifi to work with my pathetic mortal knowledge of gnu/linux. Every time I enter the password to log into my wifi router it immediately asks me for it again not accepting it and I don't have clue what to do about it. how can i set up the wifi here.(I tried with Meego, and Meego detected the wireless autometically..But I want to use Ubuntu)
I have a laptop that was working fine with 10.04 LTS. Today, I did a full 10.10 install and now my wireless is not working. Thinking it had to do with 10.10, I did a full install back to 10.04 LTs. Wireless is still not working. I tried installing the driver for my laptop's internal wifi using ndiswrapper, but that didn't work either. I have another laptop that is identical to the non-working one, with the exception that it is running a Celeron processor and non-Nvidia graphics. Otherwise, they are identical with respect to the wifi adapter. The Celeron machine is giving me absolutely no problems.

View 1 Replies View Relatedi am getting some troubles with WiFi. I got a Lenovo G550 with a BCM4312, at first i found some troubles making it work but i managed to find a proper driver and it is working "fine" Every 5 minutes or so my WiFi freezes and internet stops working. I don't get disconnected from the network, but until i don't reconnect to it, internet will not work.
Rare thing is, i realised that this happens ONLY when my notebook is plugged in. When it's working on battery, this does not happen. If i use it on battery it works for 30-40 mins (or more) and 3 minutes after i plug it in, it just stops working. I'm using Ubuntu 10.10, if there is any information i could give, just tell me. I also have a Windows partition and this does not happen there, either plugged in or on battery.
after upgrading to 11.04, I can't use the fn-f2 combination anymore to activate the wifi card. I'm using a Dell latitude laptop. Wifi is functioning normally when it's on and I can even turn it off with the hotkeys. When I try to turn it back on, the light goes on for a second and than dims again. I than have to reboot into Windows to get it back on, which is kind of annoying.
