OpenSUSE Install :: Wrong Display Size On Resume - 11.2
Aug 25, 2010
I installed opensuse 11.2 on ASUS R2E nicely It have a 7" touchscreen and works nice. The screen is correctly settled to 800x480 on boot however after a S2RAM it is reinitialized as 800x600. I made an xorg.conf with only one fixed mode on 800x480 but daesn't seems to be considered on resume. After cold boot sax2 get the right size (800x480) and after resume 800x600 The video chipset is intel 945 GM.
May this be related to hardware reinitialization ? How to re-initialize X on resume ?

Is there some better way of getting my display size set to 1280x960 when I launch openSUSE 11.4 under VMware Server? Here's what I've done so far: I am running Windows 7 on an AMD Phenom II system (motherboard: Gigabyte 880GMA-UD2H). I installed VMware Server (version 2.0.2) so that I can run openSUSE 11.4. The initial install went pretty smoothly. However, the display size was set to 800x500. I attempted to set it to 1280x960 by changing the /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/50-monitor.conf file as follows:
Code:
/etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/50-monitor.conf
Section "Monitor"
Identifier "Default Monitor"
## If your monitor doesn't support DDC you may override the
## defaults here
# HorizSync 28-85
# VertRefresh 50-100
HorizSync 1-10000
VertRefresh 1-10000
## Add your mode lines here, use e.g the cvt tool
Option "PreferredMode" "1280x960_60.00"
# 1280x960 59.94 Hz (CVT 1.23M3) hsync: 59.70 kHz; pclk: 101.25 MHz
Modeline "1280x960_60.00" 101.25 1280 1360 1488 1696 960 963 967 996 -hsync +vsync
This resulted in a display size of 1734x1342 (or something close to that). I noted from the /var/log/Xorg.0.log file that the vmwlegacy driver is being used instead of the vmware svga driver. There is a note that the vmwlegacy driver does not support the "PreferredMode" setting in the monitor section of the xorg.conf files. For the time being, I have set my horizontal and vertical rates to 60kHz and 60Hz, respectively. This does limit the maximum display size to 1280x960, but for all the wrong reasons. How do I set up my system to get the correct display size?

Continuing with my 11.3 install on an old Toshiba Tecra M1 laptop:
When i was installing, i had the options of 1600x1200, 1280x1024, 1024x768 etc.
I chose the 1024x768, because it fit the laptop screen perfectly.
But after the installation, the highest resolution i get is 800x600, and it's wasting a bunch of real estate on the screen.
I mean, if during installation it could do 1024x768, why not after the install? obviously the graphics card supported it.

I am using OS 11.0 Every time I boot my laptop (dell inspiron 9300 - ati video M300). I get the desktop display as 1920 X 1200. This is too large for my default. I use KRandRTray to resize back to 1024 X 768. How can I set 1024 X 768 as the default but still have the option to go to 1920 X 1200?

OpenSUSE 11.4 / kernel 2.6.37.1-1.2-desktop / Gnome 2.32.1
Video: Intel 945G (on motherboard)
Monitor: Acer AL1716 @ 1024x768
Driver: whatever 11.4 auto-installed for the card
Having a strange video problem after recently up-ing to 11.4. When new windows open maximized, they are opening at the wrong size (slightly too small) resulting in a distorted view including 'broken' fonts (missing pixels). If I unmaximize the new window, and then re-maximize it, it now maximizes to the correct size and everything is fine.

I have just installed openSUSE 11.4 a few days ago, and added nvidia propietary drivers.
After that, buttons that are selected are with two white lines. One on the top, and one on the left. I don't know what is it all about, but I think it may be nvidia's problem.

I know that you can make it full screen, however it just makes the background OS's background black, and still provides a smaller display. Is it possible to make the guest OS's screen (or display) full size?

System won't retain 16:9 display size setting in YaST (SaX2). I'm using SuSE 11.1 (64 bit).
SaX2 settings as follows:
Monitor is Samsung Syncmaster XL2370-1 (digital). Resolution is set to 1920X1080 (1080p). Diagonal measurement set to 23 inches. Display size indicates 509 m.m. X 286 m.m. (20 3/8" X 11 1/2").
Aspect ratio is entered as 16:9, but after saving and restarting computer it keeps coming back as 16:10.
Samsung literature says 16:9, and measurements above confirm this.
So why does it keep going back to 16:10, and how can I get it to retain 16:9? (Same thing happens on another computer, also running SuSE 11.1, and with a second of these same monitors.)

Installed 11.3 for 2 users. PC Asus motherboard. /home partition ext3 from 11.1. When one of the users hibernates (to disk) and the other resumes with a change user click the system sometimes ! does not know what to do. It askes for the password but both passwords (both users) are rejected, however the last time the system resumed with 2 active mousearrows and I think both users were activated. Unable to use the mouseclick because both arrows were active. Is this a known 11.3 unstable bug or is it in my system?

There is an intermittent problem with resuming from s2ram. Occasionally, the power button is pressed to resume, the screensaver comes on but the animation is frozen along with the mouse and KB. Sometimes the desktop will show although with the same frozen condition. My swap parition is 2GB. I read in the forums that a small swap partition may cause a somewhat similar condition. I also read a recommendation to disable powersaving and screensaver, again not for my exact symptoms. I would like to find the root cause even if it takes some doing. Otherwise, the system rocks (except Amarok never worked but Kaffeine works for sound). Here are the system specs:
openSUSE 11.3 x86_64
KDE 4.4.4. rel 3
HP xw9400 Workstation AMD 64 Opteron
OCZ Vertex 60GB (dedicated system drive-single boot)

So when my laptop resumes from suspend (haven't tried hibernate) the screen is black (and stays black) until I hit ctrl-f7is this because its opening the wrong display, or because ctrl-f7 'wakes up' X, or ??? it's not that big of a deal, now that I know how to get back to the X session (at first I thought it was "frozen")but it is sort of inconvenient, is there a way to make the behavior "automatically go back to the x sesson on resume" ?

When I resume my system after choosing the "Suspend to RAM" option, the login prompt appears but the keyboard doesn't work at all. (Caps/Num/Scroll don't light up either) The mouse, however, works fine and I'm able to click on the on-screen elements. Since I'm not able to login, I'm forced to reboot and abort the session. Note that this does NOT happen with the "Suspend to Disk" feature. (ie, it works fine).
System Specs:
openSUSE 11.2 KDE4.3 x86_64 (updated)
Sony VAIO VGN-CS17G

I usually shut down openSUSE in KDE by clicking the shutdown icon and selecting "Turn Off Computer". When I boot back into openSUSE, my session resumes automatically without it asking for my password. While I don't mind KDE resuming my session because it saves time, me not having to reenter my password is a security risk. How do I turn off the autologin?

The image attached explain best this issue.
Usually this HTML menu fits fine. I just installed Kubuntu 10.04 and I have this bad behavior. I am sure that is only in my local environment, not in other computers (nor page zoom involved).
Looks the same in firefox, chrome, konqueror...

I had to do a warm reboot to get going again. I'm using 11.4 with KDE.This is the section of the /var/log/messages from around the time of the crash at 16.42/16.44.

I am running ubuntu 10.04 with the fglrx driver installed with apt-get. I have an ATI Radeon HD AGP with 512MB of video ram. My bios window size is 64MB. The Xorg.0.log file shows that 512MB is recognized. I also tried checking the /proc/mtrr file and it shows two values one I believe is my ram size which looks to be correct at 1.5GB the other is 512MB which I think is my video ram size, but when I do an lspci -v the video ram size shows 256MB. I am trying to run Doom 3 and it only allows me to use 256MB of memory.

The /etc/profile said that i should do that in /etc/profile.local.I create /etc/profile.local, set the aliases, then i reboot. Now i've got a broken bash enviroment. Prompt has gone, ls colors gone, useful aliases (md=mkdir) gone.I've got this prompt: 'bash-4.0$' instead of the 'username@hostname:actual dir'.The root account has got the same errors, so i think i broke something system-wide.I removed the profile.local but the problem stays. What should i do to regain the standard bash enviroment?

What the right place to report errors in package descriptions ? There are more than two dozens categories mentioned on the openSUSE "reporting a bug" web page but none of them seem to fit. The packager of the concerned rpm is bugs.opensuse.org, no email printed out when launching rpm -qpi <package name>.

I just happened to lock myself out of ssh access on my xen virtual server since I changed the ssh port but forgot to open it in the firewall. No problem, I just access it through VNC in VM manager, I thought, however I have some special chars in my root password and the keymap through VNC seems to have changed somehow. So I cant login as root, nor do su or sudo. I can login as user. I need the sign " but can't figure out how.

Just completed a fresh netinstall of OpenSUSE. This machine previously had a Ubuntu install on it, but I was having all sorts of issues and decided I required a fresh start. The install itself went acceptably, although I ended up manually fixing GRUB.Now the system is running, I've got a ridiculous problem, in that I'm still seeing the old hostname- It used to be ubuntu-server, but should now be unimatrix-001.Checked both the obvious places (/etc/HOSTNAME & YaST), but the correct hostname is in both of them.
