OpenSUSE Install :: Wrong Keymap - Now Root Can't Login ?
Dec 30, 2010
I just happened to lock myself out of ssh access on my xen virtual server since I changed the ssh port but forgot to open it in the firewall. No problem, I just access it through VNC in VM manager, I thought, however I have some special chars in my root password and the keymap through VNC seems to have changed somehow. So I cant login as root, nor do su or sudo. I can login as user. I need the sign " but can't figure out how.

During boot-up of openSUSE 11.2 (dup'd from 11.1; default runlevel 3) the following message appears:
Code:
My question now: Is there a way to tell SUSE to set the above mentioned keymap using UTF-8 encoding instead of assuming ISO-8859-15?
The few Google search results (~7) on this topic also seem to indicate that this is a 'German-only' problem because it only seems to appear when setting German keymaps.

I was configuring usermod for vboxusers and reboot when suddenly I can't even login to my own account except for 'root'.
I had disabled user login before this. There is only 1 group when I checked in YaST which is 'users' and its group member is 'games'.
Why can't I login to home account?

Using openSUSE 11.4 (64-bit). Desktop is default KDE. All of a sudden I am no longer able to login. My desktop only has one user and when I key in the password (which I am 100% sure it is correct!) I get the dreaded "Login failed" message. I followed these instructions without success: How to reset/recover the ROOT password in openSUSE | SUSE & openSUSE Following the instructions in the above link, I tried re-typing the old password and created new ones too. But I keep on getting the Login Failed message. A strange situation

I work on a product that have to start automatically an application. Running Opensuse 11.2 So in the inittab I have : 1:2345:once:/root/Velox/VeloxBoot.sh 2:2345:respawn:/sbin/mingetty tty2
In the VeloxBoot.sh, if I don't press any key, my application starts after a timeout. If the user presses a key I want to have a login prompt. Unfortunately, if I start /bin/login, I have a prompt with login, but once I enter my login, it does not ask for a password and it says wrong password

I was logged in as root, made some changes to my users and think I may have inadvertently changed root somehow. Ever since then, my machine runs just fine, I can sudo, Yast, etc without any issues. (Root password is fine) but when I try to log in as root, the system changes the screen display, as if it's going to login, then returns me back to the login prompt without error. If I "ctl+alt+F1", I drop out to the console and can login as root, but cannot startx because the display is already in use.... So, I removed the .X0-lock, but still cannot get the GUI to load. (after running rm /tmp/./X0-lock, I get a fatal error, "can't establish any listening sockets..." "Ctl+Alt+F7" brings me back to the GUI where I am logged in as myself in Gnome) if I login with my user account, everything runs fine and all is well.

I have found this link "Login Failed" message when logging in through RDP
I am suffering from exactly these symptoms. Can anyone suggest what the likely cause is? How would that bug/solution relate to my environment: openSUSE 11.3/xrdp 0.4.1-85.1?
And lastly, how can I find out if the update implied under "Additional Information" has happened?
