OpenSUSE Install :: Unable To Synchronize Time?
Feb 20, 2011
I have an OpenSuSE 11.1 web server. For some reason the time will not stay with what I set it to.I go into Personal Settings and adjust the date/time and no matter what it keeps defaulting back to december of 2007.This is a virtual machine sitting on VMware ESXi 3.5. I noticed that the time in the BIOS was also off by the same date. I adjusted it there and still the time is incorrect within the OS.As soon as I boot into the OS, it displays december of 2007. I check the BIOS again and it reverts back.

I am trying to synchronize the time of my VM server with ntpd. I have the following configuration. And in the /etc/ntp.conf, I have the following line:
restrict default ignore
restrict 127.0.0.1.
server time1.server
server time2.server
Whenever I have this line, the erver is not able to synchronize its time... So far as I understood, this line prevents other servers using this machine as a time server. And the second line says to allow localhost to use as time server. But why do I need to use its own time server when I have specified to use time1.server and time2.server ? ( firewall for tcp and udp ports 123 is open)
However, when I replace the first line of the configuration with the following line, it works. restrict default kod nomodify notrap noquery But with this, i am allowing other servers to use this server a ntp (which I wouldn't like to). Why this machine tries to use ntp server of its own (to snyc time) and why it is not working though i have the entry "restrict 127.0.0.1" ??

I'd like to have a copy of a web site on my local drive. Then when I make changes to that copy, have those changes automatically updated on the site's server. Ideally I'd like to tell it to only do this for certain file types. Does anybody know of a way to do this with Linux?

I just installed antix. It asked for time zones and I set all of that up but it is 3hrs off. My computer clock is correct, why can't I just set up antix to recognize my computer clock? Or why doesn't it just use that as a default?

I just bought a Nokia N900 and it's a beautiful device!
Naturally, since it runs Linux, it's unable to synchronize with other Linux devices. It's one of those wacky universal constants you can't seem to understand.
I've tried using SyncEvolution, which supports funambol, but it does not work. It keeps complaining about a failed authentication or whatnot.

I have just recently found I have a problem under SUSE 10.3. History, I had my PC, an IBM Power Centre box with 4g ram and 2 hard-drives (80gb and 1Tb) fail to reboot after a power drop. Got an error message about the 80gb H/D losing some information. I was able tofix the issues by using "fsck". The PC was able to restart after this, and seemed to be working well.
However in the last couple of days I noiticed that the time was incorrect, it seems the sync for time has switched to normal time too early. Right mouse click to adjust this would not bring up the "adjust time" window. ?Why, unknown. I then decided I would go through "YAST" to do my changes, but now I am unable to load "YAST". I can load it through a terminal window, but there must be some reason why it won't load the GUI? from the menu.? There could be other programs that are also not loading that I have not found.
Q- could something have been lost when I had the H/D reboot issue? And if so is there any way of restoring lost or coruputed OS files?
I have the 10.3 OS on DVD, which is how I installed it, and note that there is a recovey prompt, but need some advise on how to go about it. A total reinstall is not an option at this time until I can get a backup unit running.

I compiled the latest version of libgpod (0.7.3GIT) and gtkpod (0.99.15GIT) and loaded my ipod touch 3g. I can then drag and drop files to it, but when I try to synchronize, I get the error message Code: Please specify the command to be called on the 'Tools' section of the preferences dialog. Does anybody know what the command should be?

I have problems with running Yast2 under Gnome when I connect via VNC to the computer. The first 20-30 times it worked, but then it simply stopped to work. When switching to another VNC-Server (instead of :1 to :2) it works again for approx. 20-30 times. The behaviour is very much similar to the one described here:
Yast2 startet nicht unter VNC (SUSE 11.1/Gnome)
I use OpenSUSE 11.2 with german language set. The VNC server I use the one that is installed "by default".
When I try to run Yast2 from a terminal under Gnome as normal user I get the following output:
./yast2: Zeile 30: ./lib/YaST2/bin/yast2-funcs: Datei oder Verzeichnis nicht gefunden
./yast2: Zeile 267: set_lang_from_sysconfig: Kommando nicht gefunden.
./yast2: Zeile 192: check_qt: Kommando nicht gefunden.
Qt GUI wanted but not found, failing back to ncurses.

I have a buggy install, 11.2 and I need to be root to look around/change/fix I'm tired of being asked twice for a security code for any change/tweak/install/config when im trying to fix the issue. Which of your multiple applications do I use to make myself root? Yast doesn't seem to be doing the trick. I have eth config issues, grub issues, application update issues, security config issues, right now i just want security login issues to be fixed so im not asked a thousand times for my admin rights.

Are there any easy special tricks to speed up the boot time?Coming from Linux Mint (GNOME), I could get to the Desktop from cold in less than 25 secs. Now in openSuse 11.3 (KDE4.5) it takes more than twice that.Is this a function of KDE or have Ubuntu done something that openSuse hasn't to speed up the boot?

I need to restrict the login time for an Opensuse user. Let's say : a user can login after 9am and have to logout at 10am.
Is there a fast and easy way to do it? (I have to administrate a machine under Opensuse but unfortunately, I am not a computer scientist...)

Now that i reboot it frequently i notice that the clock is always not what is supposed to be. I'm in Toronto, Canada so it should be GMT -5:00. Sometimes it shows GMT-6, sometimes -10, now is GMT -11. Anyone would know why i have this issue? I'm running Suse11.1 on a 64 bit. My laptop which runs on 32 bit is working fine.(well probably different versions for kernel and kde.(whatever was in th repository to be updated i updated)

As soon as I install and reboot OpenSUSE, my partition table gets lost somehow. Here is some information about my system:
Dual-booting system with Vista and OpenSUSE 2 SATA hard drives combined into one with Vista installed on them. 1 IDE hard drive with OpenSUSE installed on it.
When I install OpenSUSE, it loads fine right after the installation. Then, when I reboot the computer and select to load OpenSUSE from the Grub loader menu, it hangs right after:
root(hd4,1)
Filesystem type is ext2fs, partition type 0x83
kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.31.5-0.1-desktop root=/dev/disk/by-id/ata-IC35l....... and so on
I tried running System Repair off of a DVD and automated test - it tells me that the partition table is lost. I choose to recover partition table and after a while it does but I am still unable to boot.

When the systen is running there is a program/utility/kernel-driver? kthreadd in system monitor all the following programs are a child process of kthreadd. Is kthreadd part of elevator=cfq and can kthreadd be influenced by params. kthreads uses no cpu time memory or shared memory so it must be in kernel. is there any documentation on this subject? System 11.3 on quad processor 8 gb mem nvidia-card and driver.

For some reason, every time I shut down and reboot my machine, the system time advances four hours. The local time here is EDT (-4hrs UTC). I have it set correctly in Yast and have the 'hardware clock is set to UTC' checked. However, for some reason, the next time I boot, the system time will be ahead four hours.

Trying to install on a: Dell Precision T3500 OpenSuse 11.3 keeps showing the following message:
"Make sure CD number 1 is in your drive"
I ordered the DVD from the OpenSuse site, so they ARE NOT burned copies. I also tried burning images, the same problem happens. No matter what I do, it does not go beyond this message.

where the time to display media notifications is stored? When I put a CD or DVD into the player slot, a popup window shows possible actions to take but these old eyes can't read it fast enough to get through the list. Is it possible to get it to display longer and if so how?
When I put an audio CD in the slot, the display says there are six (6) actions possible but I only have time enough to read the first 2 or 3.

I just know it has to be possible to let two users (since I have two kids) share the same PC at the same time using a 2nd graphic card, two displays, two keyboards, two mice. I have seen one 10 year old "how to" which just didn't seem like it would fly with today's XFree/DBUS/all USB setups.
Does anyone know how to do this? I would like each user to see a log in screen and log into a GUI desktop (it doesn't have to be KDE, but that is what we have been using). The MB and the video card use the same type of GPU. The PC has a dual core AMD, and 4 GB of RAM, so the resources should be fine for school work, KDE Educational software/games. Other than squid, there isn't particular server running on it either, so resources should not be an issue.

On another box, I get some "/etc/*/ipv6" should have a .conf file. Should I worry / fix up something before next upgrade?

pm-hibernate and pm-suspend only work the first time after booting into runlevel 5. This behavior is reproducable. pm-hibernate starts out correctly but then hangs the system bevore it gets to save the image from memory to disk. The computer locks up and does not power down.
pm-suspend: on wake up there is no signal on the screen (pm-suspend called from X environment or text terminal shows same result). I spent some time reading information on s2ram s2disk and added the follwing options:
S2RAM_OPTS="-f" in
/etc/pm/config.d/00meine.config
(display adapter is GForce4 nvidia with the closed source nvidia driver for accel)
splash = n in
/etc/suspend.conf - to get some more information during the suspend / hibernate.
Any ideas to get pm-hibernate / pm-suspend to work more than one time after boot??? Hibernate would be a great start for daily work and for energy saving.
horstausdemwald PS: In runlevel 3 pm-hibernate works various times from a text terminal. Under the same condition pm-suspend leads to a scrambled text terminal after resuming (some help on this: using vga=normal in Grub). The computer continues to work - though without visual aid - when the text terminal is scarambled. For example Runlevel 5 can be called blindly from the text terminal.

Is it possible to install a video driver at the time of the installation of the operating system? I have made multiple installation attempts using the various 11.4 x64 live & non-live versions. As soon as I get past the splash screen with the boot options, the display becomes corrupt & continuing is impossible. I have attempted using the various video options under the F6 menu (text mode, vesa, safe mode) without success.
I am reasonably certain it is a failure of the video driver. I have observed the identical behaviour while installing MS Windows with the incorrect video driver. The video chipset manufacturer does provide a linux driver on their website. It is a .run file. I have the .run file on a USB stick along with the OS files. This is a link to the hardware platform I am attempting to install to. Is it possible that my video chipset has insufficient video memory?

Whenever I try to use a preload ISO from susestudio.com, it takes me about 5 tries to actually get it to install. I load it up in VirtualBox, and on the screen that warns "you are about to erase all data on /dev/sda, continue?", selecting "yes" will 80% of the time cause it to think you cancelled and waits 30 seconds before rebooting. Every now and then it decides to work, but sadly that's the exception and not the rule. If it makes any difference, the appliance I'm downloading is a custom one based on openSUSE 11.4 Minimal X with GNOME 3 installed on top of it.

opesnSuse 11.1, linux 2.6.27.45-0.1-default x86_64 This host has two samba shares that are located on an OS/2 server. Neither mount at boot time but they do mount from the command line.
kernel: CIFS VFS: cifs_mount failed w/return code = -6
There are 5 other client computers that mount the same shares at boot time using almost (different user/pass info) identical data. I do not see what is different about this host.
