For some reason, every time I shut down and reboot my machine, the system time advances four hours. The local time here is EDT (-4hrs UTC). I have it set correctly in Yast and have the 'hardware clock is set to UTC' checked. However, for some reason, the next time I boot, the system time will be ahead four hours.

I have installed "open-SUSE 11.4" on a "500GB Free Agent External Hard Drive". I didn't have any problem in booting since last week that I booted it from my laptop. Also I did it before several times from then when I try to boot it e.g. from an "Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Quad CPU Q9400 @ 2.66GHz" PC the time between loading INITRD and starting boot sequence messages lasts nearly 30 minutes!(i didn't actually measure it but it take a long time in the same order). after starting boot sequence which is showed on monitor everything looks normal. e.g copy of files would be done by speeds between 2MB/s to 30 MB/s depending on the targets.I used to use the external hard derive to boot from different laptops and PC's from start but I didn't have such a problem anytime.

View 9 Replies View Relatedi have 2 partitions on dmraid. I am not able to configure them to mount with yast; yast partitioner gives an error stating that it can't mount a file system of unknown type. I am able to start the dmraid devices manually and mount them manually.

Sample: "* wil be removed in a future UDEV version..." On another box, I get some "/etc/*/ipv6" should have a .conf file. Should I worry / fix up something before next upgrade?
View 2 Replies View Relatedpm-hibernate and pm-suspend only work the first time after booting into runlevel 5. This behavior is reproducable. pm-hibernate starts out correctly but then hangs the system bevore it gets to save the image from memory to disk. The computer locks up and does not power down.
pm-suspend: on wake up there is no signal on the screen (pm-suspend called from X environment or text terminal shows same result). I spent some time reading information on s2ram s2disk and added the follwing options:
S2RAM_OPTS="-f" in
/etc/pm/config.d/00meine.config
(display adapter is GForce4 nvidia with the closed source nvidia driver for accel)
splash = n in
/etc/suspend.conf - to get some more information during the suspend / hibernate.
Any ideas to get pm-hibernate / pm-suspend to work more than one time after boot??? Hibernate would be a great start for daily work and for energy saving.
horstausdemwald PS: In runlevel 3 pm-hibernate works various times from a text terminal. Under the same condition pm-suspend leads to a scrambled text terminal after resuming (some help on this: using vga=normal in Grub). The computer continues to work - though without visual aid - when the text terminal is scarambled. For example Runlevel 5 can be called blindly from the text terminal.
opesnSuse 11.1, linux 2.6.27.45-0.1-default x86_64 This host has two samba shares that are located on an OS/2 server. Neither mount at boot time but they do mount from the command line.

There are 5 other client computers that mount the same shares at boot time using almost (different user/pass info) identical data. I do not see what is different about this host.

I'm using OpenSUSE 11.2 with all the released updates are installed. I've got an Windows Xp SP3 on the same hard drive and it's works fine. S.M.A.R.T. says the hdd is 100%. A few days ago I realized that the boot time increased and the hard drive operations takes way too much time. So currently the boot sequence takes 11-14 minutes.
I've already tried to solve this problem but no effect:
1.) cleaned up the root directory to create more free space
2.) plugged the sata cable to another port
3.) changed from AHCI to IDE and reverse in BIOS settings
4.) added ahci, sata_nv into the /etc/sysconfig/kernel file and created a new initrd
5.) searched for problems in the syslog
Just to imagine how slow is currently the system/hdd:
At boot time I get asked to input my password to open the keyring. I don't need this level of security and want to either pass the password in a script or disable the keyring without disallowing my wireless connection. How do I do that and where do I find out about this keyring thing?
View 4 Replies View RelatedI tried to update one of my home machines with a fresh install. This is far from new to me so I did not expect any problem. But I was proven wrong. First: did install the system as usual. First anomaly: system blocked during the install process but did restart it flawlessly one I tried to eject the DVD from the player. It needed actually that intervention to retake working. It then went to install and froze during the first system start. I rebooted with failsafe settings, it then correctly configured. I reached a beautiful desktop. I performed the updates from the update repository and I joined the nvidia proprietary driver repository (which updated to the G02 driver).
I then rebooted the machine and now I am in trouble. In normal mode the system (dual boot Opensuse, XP) does not boot at all and freezes immediately after hitting enter as before. In safe mode it goes further but does not reach X anymore. It blocks with the following line statement: "system console stolen at line 266". I then tried "startx". But the system goes into a scrolling loop that does not allow me to read the output. how to get at least the error message of the loop? I read some line passing by that the system might have an X11 authorization problem.

After adding and updating from repository kernel:/HEAD/etc to 2.6.34-rc4 I can not boot anymore due to a lack of module ext4. I thought today ext4 is stable and fix built-in in the actual kernel releases, isn't it? The error message at boot time: FATAL: Module ext4 not found. Which is right because in /lib/modules/<kernelversion>/kernel/ there is NO 'fs' subfolder. Isn't the kernel:/HEAD/ repository the official update path to get a newer major kernel? (besides openSuSE's Updates for security reasons) Do you know how I can fix it without self-compiling?

View 7 Replies View RelatedI've been having a problem on my AMD based machine, 4cpu, gigabyte ga-ma78gm-s2h Mobo, 8GB mem, two 2 terabyte Sata HDs.One thing I've found is that any kernel after 2.6.32-17 has a randomness at boot time whether the system will completely boot or not.
For instance just today I downloaded and installed 2.6.32-24
It fails to boot (I've tried cold boot, warm boot).Running its repair also fails to completely boot.My experience is that if I keep trying it "may" eventually boot but I believe there was some change after 2.6.32-17-generic that's causing the problem.Because as with 2.6.32.23... which also fails to complete bootup many times... eventually my guess is that 2.6.32.24 will also boot "sometimes".But why does 2.6.32.17 always boot for me? Something changed and its not my setup.

I was installing the kernel-pae, in the middle of the installation it said it couldn't resolve some dependencies. it ask me to ignore or cancel I chose to cancel there after my system froze.
Now I cant boot any more I get the following:
Gnome is falling apart and I've had a lot of nagging problems that I couldn't overcome.I'm thinking of wiping the OpenSuse partitions and doing a clean install without wiping the windows partition.I initially setup using the 11.0/XP dual boot FAQ in the How To forum.I have my Home directory backed up on an external HD. Might try KDE next go-round or KDE & Gnome as separate users. I have 11.2 i586 installation DVD.

The last message is ATA3 Exception EMASK. I have uploaded the /var/boot.msg here klogd 1.4.1, log source = ksys - Suse Freeze - CuQAd3dg - Pastebin. There are no other log files!

I wish to remove grub2 from mint and install grub legacy, not sure whether it will work or not. I will be reinstalling grub from suse dvd. It gives me a free hand for adding boot entries. I wish to know whether I can remove grub2 and install grub legacy. In grub2 all boot related folders are stored in more than 1 place like /boot and /etc and subfolders.
View 9 Replies View Relatedi have tried following the instructions for installing but nothing seems to work that do i need to know or ask that i am not doing to make this work. i made a dvd from the .iso but it does not want to do anything. i talked with the board manufacture about the bios needing to recognize the dvd but he said that bios does not have anything to do with it. it only sees it as an optical drive. what are the files on the dvd that the boot system needs to see for it to work? and lastly why does linux have to make things sooooo difficult.
