Fedora Installation :: Error: Unexpectedly Disconnected From Boot Status Daemon
Feb 13, 2009I downloaded F10 x86_64 live Developer Spin ISO file from fedora project spins website and burned it onto a DVD...Now when I try to boot from it, I get a menu as usual. Here I select the 'boot' option. Now it shows a 'loading' page with a progress bar and 'Fedora 10' written on the right side [as usual].. After that, on the next page I get the following error..
error: unexpectedly disconnected from boot status daemon I somehow did a reboot, and again the same problem. Microsoft XP and another Fedora are already installed on the same system..

This is supposed to get the daemon for opentftp started, but it does nothing, although I can see the results of the "echo 'Server opentftpd started' " in the boot log in /var/log .Any thoughts or general help on what the best way to accomplish such a task is?

Jan 18, 2010I am writing one simple server daemon and running with /etc/init.d/server its running properly but when i want to run one simple QT GUI with system() function , its not able to run it and returning 256 as return code .
If same daemon i m running from terminal then its working properly and also system() function is getting success with return value 0 and GUI is getting popped up.

OpenSUSE Install :: Boot From USB Connected External Hard Take Long Time From Loading INITRD Image To Start Boot Process?
Jul 18, 2011I have installed "open-SUSE 11.4" on a "500GB Free Agent External Hard Drive". I didn't have any problem in booting since last week that I booted it from my laptop. Also I did it before several times from then when I try to boot it e.g. from an "Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Quad CPU Q9400 @ 2.66GHz" PC the time between loading INITRD and starting boot sequence messages lasts nearly 30 minutes!(i didn't actually measure it but it take a long time in the same order). after starting boot sequence which is showed on monitor everything looks normal. e.g copy of files would be done by speeds between 2MB/s to 30 MB/s depending on the targets.I used to use the external hard derive to boot from different laptops and PC's from start but I didn't have such a problem anytime.

Jul 4, 2010i have 2 partitions on dmraid. I am not able to configure them to mount with yast; yast partitioner gives an error stating that it can't mount a file system of unknown type. I am able to start the dmraid devices manually and mount them manually.

OpenSUSE Install :: System Time Advancing With Each Boot?
Aug 15, 2010For some reason, every time I shut down and reboot my machine, the system time advances four hours. The local time here is EDT (-4hrs UTC). I have it set correctly in Yast and have the 'hardware clock is set to UTC' checked. However, for some reason, the next time I boot, the system time will be ahead four hours.

Mar 26, 2011Though my upgrade from 11.3 to 11.4 went pretty well (X and apparmor/samba config to renew), I have a bunch of warnings at boot time. Sample: "* wil be removed in a future UDEV version..." On another box, I get some "/etc/*/ipv6" should have a .conf file. Should I worry / fix up something before next upgrade?

Apr 13, 2011pm-hibernate and pm-suspend only work the first time after booting into runlevel 5. This behavior is reproducable. pm-hibernate starts out correctly but then hangs the system bevore it gets to save the image from memory to disk. The computer locks up and does not power down.
pm-suspend: on wake up there is no signal on the screen (pm-suspend called from X environment or text terminal shows same result). I spent some time reading information on s2ram s2disk and added the follwing options:
S2RAM_OPTS="-f" in
/etc/pm/config.d/00meine.config
(display adapter is GForce4 nvidia with the closed source nvidia driver for accel)
splash = n in
/etc/suspend.conf - to get some more information during the suspend / hibernate.
Any ideas to get pm-hibernate / pm-suspend to work more than one time after boot??? Hibernate would be a great start for daily work and for energy saving.
horstausdemwald PS: In runlevel 3 pm-hibernate works various times from a text terminal. Under the same condition pm-suspend leads to a scrambled text terminal after resuming (some help on this: using vga=normal in Grub). The computer continues to work - though without visual aid - when the text terminal is scarambled. For example Runlevel 5 can be called blindly from the text terminal.
OpenSUSE Install :: Samba Shares Do Not Mount At Boot Time?
Mar 12, 2010opesnSuse 11.1, linux 2.6.27.45-0.1-default x86_64 This host has two samba shares that are located on an OS/2 server. Neither mount at boot time but they do mount from the command line.
kernel: CIFS VFS: cifs_mount failed w/return code = -6
There are 5 other client computers that mount the same shares at boot time using almost (different user/pass info) identical data. I do not see what is different about this host.
OpenSUSE Install :: 11.2 - Incredibly Slow HDD And Boot Time Increased

AMD Athlon X2 4800+ (2,5 GHz) + 2 GB DDR2 memory
MSI K9N V2 (nforce 520)
SAMSUNG HD250HJ (SATA, 250 GB)
I'm using OpenSUSE 11.2 with all the released updates are installed. I've got an Windows Xp SP3 on the same hard drive and it's works fine. S.M.A.R.T. says the hdd is 100%. A few days ago I realized that the boot time increased and the hard drive operations takes way too much time. So currently the boot sequence takes 11-14 minutes.
I've already tried to solve this problem but no effect:
1.) cleaned up the root directory to create more free space
2.) plugged the sata cable to another port
3.) changed from AHCI to IDE and reverse in BIOS settings
4.) added ahci, sata_nv into the /etc/sysconfig/kernel file and created a new initrd
5.) searched for problems in the syslog
Just to imagine how slow is currently the system/hdd:

After adding and updating from repository kernel:/HEAD/etc to 2.6.34-rc4 I can not boot anymore due to a lack of module ext4. I thought today ext4 is stable and fix built-in in the actual kernel releases, isn't it? The error message at boot time: FATAL: Module ext4 not found. Which is right because in /lib/modules/<kernelversion>/kernel/ there is NO 'fs' subfolder. Isn't the kernel:/HEAD/ repository the official update path to get a newer major kernel? (besides openSuSE's Updates for security reasons) Do you know how I can fix it without self-compiling?

Apr 22, 2011After I upgraded from KDE 4.5 to KDE 4.6 I ran into a problem with changing the the status of different repoes from enabled to disabled, and vice versa. As I only did a desktop upgrade it is perhaps just a coincidence and hence the problem may be related to something different. But in any case, if I tick or untick the 'enable' or 'disable' option within the Yast module Software Repositories for the repo I wish to activate or deactivate, nothing happens. Deleting and readding the repoes has no effect, neither has rebuilding the rpm db or zypper refresh. I'm not very familiar with the command-line for these operations so I am grateful if anyone could give me a hint on what to try next.

Apr 22, 2011I'm pretty new to FakeRAID vs JBOD in a software RAID, and could use some help/advice. I recently installed 11.4 on a brand new server system that I pieced together, using Intel RAID ICH10r on an ASUS P8P67 Evo board with 2500K Sandy Bridge CPU. I have two RAIDs setup, one RAID-1 mirror for the system drive and /home, and the other consists of four drives in RAID-5 for a /data mount.
Installing 11.4 seemed a bit problematic. I ran into this problem: [URL]... I magically got around it by installing from the live KDE version with all updates downloaded before the install. When prompted, I specified I would like to use mdadm (it asked me), however it proceeded to setup a dmraid. I suspect this is because I have fake raid enabled via the bios. Am I correct in this? Or should I still be able to use mdadm with bios raid setup?
Anyways, to make a long story short, I now have the server mostly running with dmraid installed vice mdadm. I have read many stories online that seem to indicate that dmraid is unreliable versus mdadm, especially when used with newer SATA drives like I happen to be using. Is it worth re-installing the OS with the drives in JBOD and then having mdadm configure a linux software raid? Are their massive implications one way or another on if I do or do not install mdadm or keep dmraid?
Finally, what could I use to monitor the health and status of a dmraid? mdadm seems to have it's own monitoring associated with it when I was glazing over the man pages.
Ubuntu :: Start Rsync In Daemon Mode Every Time System Turns On?
May 6, 2010I have a Linux box, running rsync, only problem is, I have to turn it off at night. What I want to do is turn it on and when it turns on, rsync will already be running in daemon mode rather then having to run rsync daemon. Does anyone know the solution? Dec 5, 2009everytime I try to shutdown/reboot, it gets to the screen where it has the green/bold status messages on the side, but then it simply stops. The cursor doesn't blink, nothing happens...you could wait 10 minutes, and it would still be at that same screen. I don't know if I've described this well enough for anyone to understand, but I hope so! I don't have a camera, but if I did...I'd post a picture of where I mean...
But like I said, after getting to a certain, without actually shutting down, it simply stops and does absolutely nothing. This is rather inconvenient, and I'd like to find a solution to this if possible. EDIT: I'm sorry I didn't provide any hardware info, but I'm using Gnome...This didn't happen 100% of the time KDE like it does now though. (But it DID happen in KDE as well) I'm using OpenSUSE 11.2... I'll be back in a moment with hardware info, assuming it may aid in a solution.
