Im moving all my websites on a dedicated box. I had a cpanel hosting account, and now moving to a terminal and ssh system.I need some advice on choosing my mail setup. I need POP, SMTP, with multiple domains, as host for a few clients.I would like the most simple version.The server will only send +- 100 mails / day.I currently running Ubuntu Linux 10.04.

We have been tinkering with LTSP on Edubuntu as thin and fat clients. It works great, but right now we just have 1 server handling the lab, which works fine unless we want to expand, which may be very possible.
These are the instructions I received:
Login to your windows server and load the DHCP configuration screen
Create a DHCP reservation for the MAC address you obtained
Add the configuration options below to enable the machine to boot from the LTSP server
017 Root Path: /opt/ltsp/i386
066 Boot Server Host Name: <ip address>
067 Bootfile Name: ltsp/arch/pxelinux.0 # Specify CPU architecture in place of 'arch', for instance 'i386'

I'm curious, what if I want to have multiple Ubuntu servers on the network that I want to have bootable? For example, let's say I have 3 labs, and 3 servers. Server A to Lab A, Server B to Lab B, and Server C to Lab C. I want all C's computers to boot to C, and B to B, A to A, etc.
1 - How would I add multiple entries on the Windows DHCP Server to allow all 3 (A B C) servers to boot?
2 - How would I be able to isolate the clients so ONLY Lab A clients boot to Server A, etc?
This is the current setup that we have: We have approx 20 clients who pay us to send out a type of e-mail called an E-Blast to their customers. We currently are using 5 Microsoft Windows Virtual Servers to do this. The problem is that those machines are starting to break down. There are times that it will take Microsoft Windows approx 9-10 hours to complete 1 job. This is way too long. We want to move away from Microsoft Windows for this particular type of job as it seems there are more customers who are wanting to use this type of advertising.
It seems that using a Linux Server "Command Line or Shell" environment would be the best way to go as there is no GUI like Windows. Since there is just text...that is something that would/should process very, very quickly.
I am in the process of setting up a new SMTP outbound mail server. This is the current software & configuration (what is installed on this new machine):
All of the customer data (Names, E-Mail Addresses, etc that these e-mails are going to) are currently loaded in a Microsoft SQL Database.
My machine that I am using is plugged into the DMZ. I have 1 ip address for the 1 network card. I have also added/bound 4 more ip addresses to that network card.
I have configured Postfix for Multiple IP Addresses.
I can, from the command line, send successful test e-mails and receive them in my personal account.
As far as I know everything is setup correctly. I can and will post requested information so that it can be verified that everything is setup correctly.
Here are a couple of my questions:
Ensure that I have my Network / Interfaces file and my Postfix's Master.cf/Main.cf files setup correctly?
How can I setup this server to be an Outbound SMTP server and get it to use all 5 of the IP Addresses to send these e-mails quickly?
What can I use to check and ensure that this server is in fact sending out emails on all 5 IP
Addresses (I heard that there is a program named "Postal" that may help in determing this).
I have setup a home based web server to host a photo blog for myself and my friends. I will be running wordpress and possibly a phpbb3 forum. I'd like to open this to discuss server administration, server setup, and server maintenance. However, I have a pretty good start on all of those but serving a domain name to my static ip. Here my static ip is 24.10.202.144. I registered a domain through [URL]... It appears that I have the domain working to forward to my ip. However, I am still getting this output file from apache.

I have tested the domain name across a few different computers on different ips. It works appropriately. I just want to make sure I have it set correctly on the (apache) server side of things. Then I can get more into Zone Editing etc.
Faced with disk-bound issues on a FTP server with high traffic. Would like to set up multiple FTP server nodes with dedicated storage for each node where all FTP access is managed by a master FTP server. So, a user would FTP to a single externally visible IP address for the master FTP server and then get routed to the appropriate FTP node. Are the mutiple FTP nodes required or is there a better way of doing this? Perhaps only one FTP server is required and then each node would serve as a separate file server

I am wondering which would be better to use a separate FTP server or buy one of the NAS enclosures and a couple of hard drives to put in it. I am assuming that the NAS would be accessed via NFS. I have never run an FTP server and I have never had used NAS.I am just looking for pros and cons to each one. I would just like opinions as to which service (FTP/NFS) would be better for this task.

It's looking like we're going with LDAP - this decision may be out of my control (but if there's an alternative that would be REALLY better, do let me know). My question is we don't really have a domain name, so when all the tutorials say cn=example,cn=com, I can't mimic this exactly. I've been trying to get away with just one, like cn=researchlab. Will LDAP work with just one, or do I need to invent a second also? On the flipside, will it work with more? Our server can be reached by
lab.department.school.edu, could I do cn=lab,cn=department,cn=school,cn=edu?
I am wanting to setup an office network consisting of three computers and one server. We already have the equipment ready with Vista Business pre-installed on the computers. I want to be able to create a network which allows users to use any machine as this will reduce downtime should a machine break. Also I would like user's files to be held centrally on the server which makes backups easier.
The most important element here is data backup. As like most businesses we are moving away from paper and using the computers to store important records such as customer information. If this data were to be lost, the business would come to a complete halt.
I have been looking at the idea of installing a Microsoft Small Business Server as it would be nice to have centralised control of the machines. However the cost would be over 800 which can not be justified for three machines and five users. Therefore I am turning to Linux for a alternative solution. I have previously used CentOS and Ubuntu for home use but never really gained much knowledge or experience of either.
It is my understanding that Samba can act as a Primary Domain Controller, which if I'm not mistaken is where it handles the network logins and profiles. Is this correct? I have come across many samba tutorials online but whats confusing is they are all different. Some of the tutorials involve using Kerberos and OpenLDAP. Do I need to learn about either of these? What do they do and what benefit will they bring?
Finally, I see Samba 4 is in development and is likely to bring a lot of new features which aren't available in Samba 3. Is this worth waiting for because I don't want to be upgrading everything again 6 months down the road?

Maybe this isn't original thinking, but then again maybe you didn't think of doing it this way (which i am sure there are many ways to do it) So I have 2 Ubuntu Servers, 1 Windows Box and a Hub - All 3 with internet access off of single ip and single Ethernet port.
While searching for a backup method today I came across Clonezilla. I was wondering if this was the right thing for me and since I needed to backup my roommates PC for a reformat and install of Windows I decided I would give it a try, but only if it would work. I didn't want the hassle of going into the main part of the house and finding out what cord was what as there is a cable modem connected into a switch (4 static IP's with internet) and one port of the switch hooked to a router) Anyways, didn't work he was on the router I was on the switch)
But this got me thinking. When I setup my server to do this, during one of the setup scripts it said it was setting up Internet access for client machines and that it was assigning them IP addresses threw a DHCP server that it had installed.
So, I dug up the hub connected the internet cable to hub up link and Server 1 on port 1 Server 2 on port 2 and Windows on port 3 The main server gets the internet provided IP address and routes it to the hub via a virtual interface. Server 2 is configured for DHCP and the windows box, It was set to get info automatically but it didn't fill the DNS info so I had to manually do that (just a heads up) I decided to use OpenDNS Servers (208.67.222.222 & 208.67.220.220) but im sure putting in the gateway IP address would have worked too.
So, by now if you need this I am sure you are excited and want to get to it. Like i said there are probably other ways of doing it, ways that don't involve you installing clonezilla and DRBL, maybe even just DRBL is needed, maybe one of them installed whats needed as a dependency- all I know is it works, if you know - elaborate so people know, but hey- this way not only do you have internet access on all PC's you can deploy custom images to them as well.
I have 16 linux servers that use /etc/hosts files to see and talk with each other. I'm adding servers to this pool of servers. It is required to do host resolution via the /etc/hosts files. DNS or NIS are not alternatives. Aside from manually editing each of the 16+ /etc/hosts files every time I add a server or editing one /etc/hosts file on one server then scp'ing it to all the other servers, is there anyway to edit the /etc/hosts on one server and "push" it onto the other servers that need the new /etc/hosts file?
Everywhere I've looked on the Net, there hasn't been any suggestion except for the options I mention here.
Or am I just whistling in the wind?
I was curious if I could have the home folder system from a desktop install point to a set of home folders over on the server? It would streamline my backups and make files a bit more central for accessing
View 3 Replies View RelatedI've been running my little server at home for a few months now, and I've noticed that Webmin has detected that I'm in need of over 100 updates. I'm a bit scared to run the updates because everything is working just fine right now, but a part of me still wants to run some of the updates.Now I know backing up the server would be a good idea to do before this happens. This server is a media server with videos, music and pictures taking up the majority of the hard drive space on the server. I just have one partition on the server, outside of the swap partition. I would like to back up everything on the server except the videos, music, and pictures, because if even an update messes with the server, I could always retrieve those, and the external hard drive I'm going to back up to wont be big enough to hold everything anyways.
if I were to backup up everything except for those directories that hold my videos, music, and pictures, and something were to go wrong, if I were to restore all of those, would I then be back to the state my system was at when I backed up? I've never done a back up and restore in a linux environment before. I just want to make sure that just doing that will be enough, because the last thing I want to do is hose my server after taking several weeks to get it to the working state that its at.
have had a server running for a very long time using Ubuntu Server 7.10, and I think it's passed time that I upgraded.I'll be installing fresh, and I've already backed up /var/www (as well as a home directory with a few files)I've only used this as a Web / SFTP / file server. Might there be any other directories that would be good to backup? I set it up so long ago and have made a few changes along the way.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI am setting up my home network. Currently, I have one computer (Munchen) which I have set in my router to receive SSH requests. This works just fine; I can SSH into that box from anywhere. I just put together a new computer, which I want to be a file repository, my ftp server, my http server, etc. What I would like is to be able to SSH into that machine from anywhere, then SSH into the other computers on that network from there.
Here is where I really don't understand the concept of what is going on. I can SSH past the router into one computer just fine either from anywhere (that makes sense to me). I can SSH from my new computer (Chemnitz) into Munchen (which is where the router points to and is running sshd) by using its local IP address, but I can't go from Munchen to Chemnitz (even though the server is running and the firewall should be allowing the connection). I have an Ubuntu server running Lucid. I'd like to be able to back up the hard drive in the server to an external hard drive. I try to plug in a drive via a USB port and it doesn't appear to mount automatically, as it does on the desktop version. Questions: 1) What/where should I be looking for to see if the drive is mounted? (I've looked in /dev and /media; no dice.) 2) What's the mount command I should use to manually mount the external hard drive? 3) What backup commands or programs, other than rsync, are recommended? (Nothing against rsync.)

I can easily drag and drop the Samba files onto the client. I would like to automate this process, and accomplish this using an update copy versus a copy full. I am running three ubuntu computers on my local network:my desktop which runs ethernet, and two laptops which run wireless on the same network, and all from the same router. For purpose of this thread, I am concentrating on this one issue with pulse(assuming its pulse doing this). When I have two computers running at the same time, or even all three, I can hear bursts of sound coming from the other computer, not all the time, but consistently. I don't know what is causing this. I've searched hi and low in all ubuntu pulse audio forums and those mentioning pulseaudio and I have not seen this issue posted anywhere. Most threads deal with issues of not being able to get pulse to recognise audio from one computer to the other...mine is just the opposite...I'M TRYING TO STOP THIS FROM HAPPENING!...... If I'm listening to my music on my desktop, I don't want to hear what my son is playing on his laptop...and vice versa. all the computers at my home are running lucid lynx, latest updates and latest approved kernel as of the date of this post. 2.6.32-26-generic.

Is there a way to know if the terminal computer (which is connected to my linux server) is using WinSCP to connect (on a Windows platform) or a linux system? It seems they are using the same port (22) and I think the exact same protocol (SSH / SFTP), is there a way to differentiate between the two though? And going farther there, is it possible to limit the connections only to linux terminal computers and reject requests coming from Windows computers?

I have a debian home server right now, I'm using samba for my file server but I was wanting to stream my movies and music to my other computers. My family (the other users on the network) are NOT computer savvy, and to top it off they are using both Windows (xp) and Mac (Snow Leopard) machines. So I'm looking for software that is simple to use that will allow other operating systems to use it. I would think the easiest way would be to stream the music/movies through a home website. I have seen quite a few programs out there that stream music, but none for movies.
