OpenSUSE Install :: Partition Becomes Read-only When Copying Files To It

Mar 3, 2009

I've been having trouble copying files. When I try to copy something, it starts copying, and after a few GB, I suddenly get an error. It tells me its unable to write to the disk. After this, the only way to be able to write to the disk again, is to reboot the system. I then get to copy a few more files before the same error appears. The partition in question is formatted as ext3, using opensuse 11.0 with KDE.

OpenSUSE Install :: View/access/read The Files From Data Partition?

Dec 1, 2010

I am a total noob when it comes to opensuse. I just read the reviews and comments from forums taht's why I wanna try this alternative. I have 1 physical drive that has two partitions. 1 is dedicated for my windows OS (20 GB) and the other for my data (approx. 100GB).

How can I install opensuse 11.3 to just 1 partition (20GB) and leave my data partition (approx. 100GB) as it is? Can I still view/access/read the files from my data partition after I have successfully install opensuse 11.3 to my Os partition?

Ubuntu :: Copying Files To / From SD Card With Partition And Windows PC

Mar 4, 2010

I have an SD card that I formatted using my Ubuntu machine to contain one raw Linux partition and one FAT32 partition. Does anyone know of a way to be able to copy files to/from the SD card and my Windows PC? Right now, when I plug the SD card into my Windows PC, the FAT32 partition doesn't appear. When I try to copy files from my Windows PC to the raw Linux partition on the SD ard, I get "bad magic number" errors on the device that I use the SD card with. Is there some utility I can use on my Windows PC to be able to correctly read this SD card? It would be very convenient to have that for travel, etc when I don't have easy access to the Ubuntu machine.

However, I want a exact copy of that folder in my home folder on my ubuntu install on a separate partition.I've been manually copying them over so far but I want to make a script that I can run to copy all new files over. I know a little bit about scripting, mounting the drive and actually copying files is easy, its figuring out how to determine new files and copy only those that I don't know how to do.

OpenSUSE :: Dolphin Losing Files When Copying Many Files Or Large Folders?

Feb 14, 2010

I've discovered that Dolphin seems to lose random files when copying many large folders.

I first noticed this a few months ago when I tried to copy my music library from one folder to another on the same HDD. It consisted of around 600 folders and 6500 files. During the copy there were no errors but after the copy I found that some of the newly copied folders were missing files. I put it down to human error or a glitch.

Yesterday I tried to copy 13 folders containing rips of some of my DVDs. Each folder basically had one film of either 700MB or 1.4GB. Again no errors showed up during the copy but I found 3 of the newly copied folders were empty.

It's not so critical with music or films but I can't afford to lose work data like this.

Has anyone experienced or seen a similar problem with Dolphin? I'm going to have to do some more extensive testing but this is not good.

The first time I noticed the problem I was running KDE4.3.4 (I think) and now the latest was with KDE4.4.0.

OpenSUSE :: Copying Partition Table For Sda?

Nov 5, 2010

I need to copy partition table for sda, I have 3 primary partitions and 1 extended partition on sda. I understand that fdisk cant copy extended partition table and I need to use sfdisk.

Correct me if I am wrong -

1. For primary partitions

Code:
dd if=sda-mbr.bin of=/dev/sdX bs=1 count=64 skip=446 seek=446
2. For extended partition
Code:
sfdisk -d /dev/sda2 > backup-sdX.sf
Where it will store the files after backing them up. I tried SUSE 11.2 DVD, it has back up partition table utility under repairs-advanced options but it suggests saving partition table to floppy. Why it doesnt offer to save it on a removable medium or to CD.

When I try to boot I get this message, "Your screen, graphics card, and input device settings could not be detected correctly. You will need to configure them yourself". I tried doing some of the various things suggested on the forum, to no avail. It wont let me log directly to the computer at the any terminal it offers because it wont accept my user name etc. Anyway, I partitioned the drive and loaded a fresh copy of 10.04 (which is what I already have) and would like to view the files on the corrupted side so I can import my urgent documents.

OpenSUSE :: Rsync Copying All Files Instead Of Just What's Changed

Jan 11, 2011

During my backups I'm finding that rsync is copying all files, instead of just what's changed.

I'm rsyncing between 2 USB external hard drives. One hard drive is FAT32 and one is NTFS. I've examined some of the files and believe that the difference is that there's a 1-second modtime difference developing in some of the files somehow.

Here's an example. These duplicity files were synced from /media/BACKUPHD (the NTFS drive) to /media/VIDEOHD (the FAT32 drive) only a few hours ago this morning. They have not been touched or changed since then, but that 1-second difference in their time stamps has appeared:

Code:
tim@localhost:~> stat /media/BACKUPHD/backups/duplicity/duplicity-full.20110107T145955Z.vol10.difftar.gpg File: `/media/BACKUPHD/backups/duplicity/duplicity-full.20110107T145955Z.vol10.difftar.gpg'

Ubuntu Installation :: 11.04 Install Hangs At Copying Files?

I am attempting to migrate from Mandriva to Ubuntu and attempted to install the 11.04 and 10.04 CD distos on a 7-year old computer (Elite Group L7VMM3 motherboard, 1.4 ghz AMD Duron, 1.2GB RAM, 40GB IDE HDD).

The 11.04 installation CD makes it through the HD partitioning (erase everything), Computer name, time zone, and keyboard detection, but hangs after starting the "Copying files" stage of the install. The progress bar stops just below the in "Copying files...".

The 10.04 installation CD makes it through the "Installing the base system", "Retrieving console-terminus" with the progress bar stalled at 6%. Although the computer is old, Vista successfully installs on it.

OpenSUSE :: Make Files On CD Writable When Copying To Hard Disk

Jan 3, 2011

I've set up my parents' machine running KDE 4.5 and want them to use the Gwenview import function from the Device Manager popup when transferring image files off photo CDs or other inserted media, since it's the easiest method for them to comprehend. All the files on their photo discs are r-xr-xr-x by default so they're unable to rotate or modify the images once copied to their hard disk. I want to set one specific images folder on their system to automatically force any files placed there to be rw-r--r-- (and rw-rw-r-- for another shared images directory elsewhere). It seems that umask won't work since that can only take permissions away and not add them, and I'd rather avoid getting into messy ACL configuration. Is there a way to achieve this either generically or some hidden config in Gwenview itself? I use KRename myself for such tasks but this is way too complex for my parents to understand so I need something that works without them having to do anything.

But now I don't have windows anymore on this notebook so I need to use the card-reader on opensuse.

OpenSUSE Install :: OS 11.2 Installation Fails While Copying Root Filesystem

Jan 27, 2010

Have been running 11.1 on a generic notebook (eRacks) just fine until a few days ago when CUPS couldn't be reached. Rather than futz more with 11.1, I decided to install 11.2 (which has been on my desktop). Using the same CD, which continues to check ok, the install has failed many times at about the same point: 87% through "copying root filesystem" in yast2.
Specs: Intel P4 2.4 GHz, 1.5 GB RAM, ATI radeon PV250Lf

The HD was partitioned into /, swap, /home, and an extended partition of /opt, /var, /usr. Only / was ext4 and the rest were ext3. Tried various options:
* no apic
* no acpi
* "noapic acpi=off" entered manually
* Vesa instead of 1024x768

Each time had to edit partition table to mount the extended partitions. Always formatted /. At first didn't format the extended patitions, later formated all but /home. Then set yast2 to format / as ext3, to match the other partitions. In the sysinfo page the / partition is now shown as /mnt containing 723.6 MB out of 7 GB, still formatted as ext4. On rescan by yast2 partition manager, / shows as ext3. The install halts every time with an error while "copying root filesystem." Tried booting from the CD direct to install and to the Live OS followed by install--same result. So, hours later, went back to 11.1--which installed in minutes.

OpenSUSE Install :: Delete "vmkd" Files - Root Partition Full - Why

Feb 1, 2010

I had been copying "vmkd" files all of which are very large (11gig) each and later deleted them and it appears some I had deleted using "root" I reached a point when it couldn't do it and it said it couldn't because trash bin was full. Sure enough I found my root partition (20gigs) was full. I went root and emptied its trash bin which freed up about (4gigs) of space. I just set up a new system (11.2) on another drive and have setup it up with exactly the same programs as the system I'm having a problem with and the new systems root partition only has (6gigs) in the root partition. Question; how do I clean out my problem root partition?
