Ubuntu :: Read Files In Partition From Windows?

Mar 23, 2010

[Sorry if this is misplaced; I just couldn't think which category to put it under.] So yeah, I'm almost exclusively using karmic (yay!), but I still have to use that vista install I have smushed in a corner of my HD from time to time. Now, I installed karmic using the default, latest file system (ext4, I believe it is, right?). Last I remember hearing, that presents a bit of a problem, doesn't it?

Ubuntu Installation :: Resizing Windows Partition - Install Files On A Non Windows NTFS Partition

Jul 22, 2010

Now however its not letting me resize the Windows partition, mounted or unmounted. It currently occupies the whole disk. I would rather not reinstall the whole thing over again, but I will if I have to. Isnt there an easy way to shrink a Windows partition? I swear Ive done this before and it wasnt this hard. Could it be a problem with the Mint installer that now asks me if I want to unmount my disks before it goes into install mode? On this PC I would like to have

Windows XP
Mint
Ubuntu-Studio
Edubuntu
One of the E17 OSs
Puppy Linux (to create a remix)

I am probably going to put most of the linux partitions on the second laptop drive but I want to install files on a non WIndows NTFS partition.

Ubuntu :: Finding Windows Partition - Use FAT32 Partition For Photo Images And Old Windows Files

May 31, 2011

I got tired of dual booting on my old computer so on the new computer I am planning to run XP on VMware Player. The problem is that on the new computer neither Ubuntu or XP can "see" the FAT32 partition. I intend to use the FAT32 partition for photo images and old Windows files and need access from both Ubintu and XP.

Partition table entries are not in disk order.

Ubuntu :: How To Read Files On Other Partition

Jun 18, 2010

I was trying to uninstall all my audio drivers/software because of conflict issues.Anywaysomehow I corrupted/deleted/destroyed important stuff. When I try to boot I get this message, "Your screen, graphics card, and input device settings could not be detected correctly. You will need to configure them yourself". I tried doing some of the various things suggested on the forum, to no avail. It wont let me log directly to the computer at the any terminal it offers because it wont accept my user name etc. Anyway, I partitioned the drive and loaded a fresh copy of 10.04 (which is what I already have) and would like to view the files on the corrupted side so I can import my urgent documents.

Software :: Read LVM (ext3) Partition In Windows?

Aug 19, 2010

I have a dual boot system and am trying to be able to access all partitions in both OSs. I've tried some windows software that are supposed to be able to read linux partitions, but without luck. Essentially, my linux OS (rhel) is represented as an LVM partition (within the logical volume is ext3). In windows (7), file viewing programs see the partition as "raw". Is there any software that can read LVM in windows?

OpenSUSE Install :: Partition Becomes Read-only When Copying Files To It

Mar 3, 2009

I've been having trouble copying files. When I try to copy something, it starts copying, and after a few GB, I suddenly get an error. It tells me its unable to write to the disk. After this, the only way to be able to write to the disk again, is to reboot the system. I then get to copy a few more files before the same error appears. The partition in question is formatted as ext3, using opensuse 11.0 with KDE.

General :: Cant Read Filesystem Type On Windows Partition?

May 27, 2011

I had installed ubuntu 11.04 on my system along with windows vista. After a few days, i decided to remove ubuntu so i just logged into windows and formatted the ubuntu partition using the windows partitioner, then extended my main c: drive to span the whole disk so that i was left with a single partition with only windows vista on it.Later when trying to restart my system couldn't log back into windows.I kept getting a prompt sayinggrub rescue>After googling around a bit i shrinked and created another partition the disk again and installed ubuntu on it again.still. =/GRUB doesn't show any windows entry.I noticed something strange though that when i tried viewing my partitions using parted i didnt see any filesystem type listed besides my windows partition (/dev/sda3). I doubt that is why GRUB does not show any windows entry. Also i manually tried to boot into windows from the grub prompt using commands...root(hd0,3)chainloader +1bootbut it says 'invalid signature'Did i somehow corrupted my windows partition during resizing and installing/un-installing? Plus i also booted with the windows installation dvd and when i typed bootmgr /fixbootit said something like no valid filesystem found.

Ubuntu :: Read Text Files In Windows?

A real os should at least e able to read and write plain text, you think? But no, when I try to open my text files (mainly made with gedit) some characters are ass, swedish letters rarely work and ', ", / and so on are not represented as the characters I want to see. Is there a easy, fast way to read (and print!) my text files at school, where they have only windows, without spending half an hour fixing the file by hand?

Ubuntu :: How To Read Backup Files In Windows

Jun 15, 2011

I had some problems with my hdd, I fixed most of the problems with "testdrive" or "testdisk" (cant remember) but I have some bad sections on my disk right where my important data is. I made a backup with "dd" from a live cd. I have the backup with a reading error or 5 so I guess most data is safe? I have the backup of the whole drive on an other hdd and now I need to get just a few folders out of it. I tried in windows but I can't read it. Poweriso can but not the privet folders like /var/ and that folder I need. I had a password on the account so I guess that is part of the problem? How to read the backup file in windows?

OpenSUSE Install :: View/access/read The Files From Data Partition?

Dec 1, 2010

I am a total noob when it comes to opensuse. I just read the reviews and comments from forums taht's why I wanna try this alternative. I have 1 physical drive that has two partitions. 1 is dedicated for my windows OS (20 GB) and the other for my data (approx. 100GB).

How can I install opensuse 11.3 to just 1 partition (20GB) and leave my data partition (approx. 100GB) as it is? Can I still view/access/read the files from my data partition after I have successfully install opensuse 11.3 to my Os partition?

Debian Configuration :: Windows 7 Won't Read NTFS Partition Created By Raspberry Pi

Jan 10, 2016

I have a Western Digital 3TB USB drive connected to a Raspberry Pi 2 running Raspbian Jessie. I created an 30GB ext4 system partition and a NTFS Data partition using the remainder of the drive. I formatted the NTFS partition as follows:

sudo mkfs.ntfs -Q -L Data /dev/sda2

The drive works fine on the Pi but when I connect it to a Windows 7 pc the pc doesn't recognise the format of the Data partition and can't access it.

On the Pi I ran:
$ sudo fdisk -l /dev/sda2

Disk /dev/sda2: 2.7 TiB, 2968557453312 bytes, 724745472 sectors
Units: sectors of 1 * 4096 = 4096 bytes
Sector size (logical/physical): 4096 bytes / 4096 bytes
I/O size (minimum/optimal): 4096 bytes / 4096 bytes

[Code] .....

Partition table entries are not in disk order.

I have Ubuntu 10.04 x64 installed and i've mounted both NTFS partitions. The first contains my Windows partition (with Windows 7 on it) and the second contains my backup partition. They are two seperate hardisks. Now, i'm trying to delete files on my Windows partition, but the ability to 'Cut' is greyed out and there's no 'delete' option at all. This only occurs on my Windows partition, but my Backup partition can execute and option; whether delete, cut etc.I assume this is either a settings in Ubuntu or something about Windows that prevents alternate O/S's from messing around with it.So how can I go about enabling the feature to delete from my Windows partition? The idea is to erase all Windows related stuff so I can reinstall Windows.
