I just installed the 11.4 version after using numerous previous versions. During this install the /usr directory was placed in a separate partition. How would I go about placing it in the partition with all the other running directories?

Coming from the Windows' world, it's as easy as taking an image of a partition and restoring it over a new HDD partition.
I have an 80 GB XFS / partition which is dying. Got some errors like this:

It's not a problem to create another partition, I've got 2 500GB and 2 1TB disks, all EXT3. I've also 2 80 GB disks, 1 for / and 1 for /home. I will remove the 2 80 GB disks but I have a lot of stuff compiled myself. I use openSUSE 11.1. Is it possible to create a 80 GB EXT3 partition on each of the 500 GB hdd, 1 for / and 1 for /home and move the data to it? must it be done with the DD command or can I easily copy everything within a live-cd. The /boot and swap are already on one of the 500GB disks, and there is no bootrecord on the 80 GB disks.
I have a dual boot system with Vista and OpenSUSE 11.3 . Linux is distributed over 2 partitions: one for /home and one root partition for all the rest. As this root partition is getting filled, I thought of taking a 10 GB partition from the Vista partition and using this for the /usr folder (= 6 GB). This partition is a primary partition, while the rest of Linux is on secondary partitions.To be save, I renamed the existing /usr to /usr-old and created an empty /usr as mount point. I changed fstab to load the root partition, the /usr partition and then the /home partition.But when I started the system, there were a lot of errors about files not found in the /usr folder, lthought this folder and is content were clearly present when browsing the filesystem. What went wrong? Hard links? Other system configurations to change? Not possible to put /usr on a separate partition?

When I last installed Suse I just went with the recommended LVM layout, which proposes a very small /boot partition. When you run out of space you are now faced with resizing the LVM, which Gparted unfortunately does not support.In Googling around I did not find a concise guide, so I collected the information I needed and and then wrote a guide on the steps I used to resolve this issue and it is available at Resizing Default LVM Partitions and Moving /boot - Mine the Harvest
I found using EVMS from a live CD to be quite simple and was able to create a new /boot partition and reconfigure grub to use it in very short order. I was quite impressed with how easy to use EVMS was and the options it provides. (I think that the default LVM layout the Suse installer proposes is overly conservative on the size of the /boot partition. Why not allocate a few hundred megs, especially considering the size of drives today? Perhaps Suse will soon move to using grub2 and eliminating /boot altogether, but for now the very small allocation of space can be a bit of a pitfall for users -- especially when they are not familiar with resizing LVMs and reconfiguring grub. Of course moving to grub2 also introduces its own complexities too.)
I am trying to move my home directory from my install partition to a new partition. I cloned my installation from a previous ~78 gb HD using g4l to a new 250 GB drive. Now that I am using the new drive i created a new partition to used for files called "files". New partition is sda3 and the boot partition is sd1. Shut down MySQL and Apache
Make a new partition, format as ext4
Mount new partition on /mnt
Copy all of /srv to /mnt
Copy MySQL stuff from /var/lib/mysql to /mnt/mysql
Update /etc/my.conf to point to /srv/mysql
Unmount /mnt
Update /etc/fstab to mount new partition on /srv
mount /srv
Start mysql, apache
Will a fresh install or upgrade keep its fingers out of /srv, in the same way as /home? Or will those parts of apache installed in /srv/www be updated?
I just installed suse 11.3 on formatted partitions (5GB swap, 30GB / and 500GB /home). Just after the installation, My computer showed 25.2GB of /home to be used. When I do:

I'm not hard-up on space right now but storage has been dear until the recent past. Also out of curiosity, the size of the /home partition is shown as 493 instead of the 500GB allocated while the swap also lists only 4GB instead of 5GB. Below is the output for fdisk -l in case anyone needs it:

I have Linux 2.6.34-12-desktop x86_64 and KDE 4.4.5 (which I had previously used in 11.2 without any problems) and 4.0GB RAM.
i am in need of linux help. iam at college and i need this back/restore script to pass this final part of an assessment. i require a backup script that will not only backup but also restore files to the relevent directories. e.g. users are instructed to store all wordprocessor files in a directory named wp. so i am needing to create a backup directory and 3 directories within that and some files within the 3 directories and then back them up ot restore them. l know i should/have to do this myself by been trying to get/understand info for the last few days and came up with zero.

I know I can use the mv command, but it won't let me go through all the subdirectories of my folder, just the current one. How can I search through all subdirectories for all .txts or whatever and move them to a folder of my choosing?
I just got myself a OCZ vertex 2 SSD and have been moving cache directories to a ram drive to try to help extend the life of my SSD and improve system performance. I have created a ram drive /tmp directory in fstab like soCode: tmpfs /tmp tmpfsnodev,nosuid,noexec,mode=1777 0 0 And have since moved my Firefox temporary files to the /tmp directory and it have gotten me thinking, what else can I move here. I am going to upgrade my computer to have 8gb�s of ram which is way more than I�ll ever need.I would like to move the transmission cache dir there but I don�t know how to. Anyone have any tips on that? I was thinking of maybe a script that will run when I login to create a symbolic link?

I need to create a subdirectory for each pair then move the pair into the subdirectory.
I accomplished the first step using:

I can use a regex to designate the pair and associate the directory, but how do I use regex in a path as the output of a move command?
I have a bunch of .7z files in a directory, and I need to put each one of them into a separate directory, named after the file (without extention). The command line I use:

Recently I was working on something on my windows partition (on the same HD as opensuse), and all the sudden windows stopped working and I got some bad sectors on my HD.
Now, my opensuse installation is on the same HD as windows, but I need to get rid of that HD soon because it's starting to get worse (and I think opensuse is randomly crashing because of it).
Is there any way to transfer my opensuse parititon/os to another hard drive?
I'm a plain user of Open SUSE 10.2 for more than six months now on a dual boot machine (Vista Ultimate) and I'm 80% mostly on Linux now but because of my job I still have to keep windows.
My 1TB HDD is full and I've got a new 1TB HDD to add to my system. My plan is to leave this HDD only for Vista and to use the new HDD for Open Suse, changing it to the 10.3 version and without to lose my data and my settings (keeping the Home directory).
Considering that I am a ignorant could someone give me a step by step plan as much as detailed possible, in order to succeed?
In system info my ext4 /home directory shows total space of 51.7 gigs with 51.5 gigs available.
My ext4 / directory shows total space 19.7 gig and 7.7 gig free. Whenever I install anything it goes to the / (as guess root directory) In Dolphin it shows my /home directory but anything installed under that seems like it installs on the / directory.
If I have 51 gigs free where is it and how do I gain access?

I just downloaded and innstalled 11.2 about 6 weeks ago, and Have updated several times since... I was very frustrated and found that I did in fact have the proper pernissions to delete this directory. I checked multiple forums for much longer than I would like to admit, and they kept telling me to use (in the end) the same commands.....I finally stumbled upon a forum that again told me to use rm [nonempty directory's name] ...and viola
my /bash can't be outdated can it
Since I updated from 11.2 to 11.4 an annoying bug seems to have crept into the shell.
If I type the following and hit tab I get:
cd ~/.kde
.kde/ .kde// .kde4/ .kde4//
i.e. each directory has a / and // version for some reason. I have to enter a / and hit tab again to proceed.
If however I type the following and hit tab I get:
cd /home/tux/.kde
.kde/ .kde4/
i.e. correct as expected.
The ls command does not do this.
This seems like a bug.

From what I have understood, trying out different Linux distros is one of those things that a Linux user just needs to do now and again.
So what is the "best" way of keeping your home folder intact? Should I just copy the whole home folder to a separate storage space, install a new distro (I'm thinking going from Ubuntu to Suse) and then just past it in the newly installed distro? Or are there some other, more "refined" methods?
I thought one's home folder contains a lot of config and settings files, but they would surely just be applicable to the original distro!?
I know I can try out several distros via live CDs, which I have done, but when you've taken that next step and actually want to install another distro as your main Linux operating system.
Sometimes, (the most when I'm making changes in something, like the pager, appearance, theme, etc), the screen freezes completely (but mouse is moving) and I have to restart the system.
If I try it again, it crashes at the same point.
I'm trying to mount some file systems in the /sys directory with the nosuid option. Upon executing the command:
mount -o remount,nosuid /sys/kernel/security
or
remount nosuid /sys/kernel/security
/etc/mtab will show that they have been applied, but upon restart of the machine, the nosuid option is removed.
Soooo, the question is why are they being removed? Can /sys files carry the nosuid option?
Have a multi boot system running Opensuse and windows xp Have booted up opensuse and the windows xp partition is mounted on /windows/C by suse.
This is what i have done
Installed wine 1.x version
mounted /windows/C with exec option in /etc/fstab.
Now when i tried to execute a exe file from the /windows/C using wine with this command
wine /windows/C/Program Files/Windows Media Player/wmplayer.exe - This isa just a example . For all the exe files i get the same error
i get a pop up saying . "there has been a error running this exe or dll file . report the error to appdb.winehp.org"
I am trying to run the openSUSE live cd from the second partition of a 16 G USB stick. The reason for doing this is so that I can use the first 13G as a windows file system that Windows can read. Does anyone know how to do this?

I have everything pretty much locked down but when I go into the gconf-editor under /apps/nautilius/preferences/show_desktop and uncheck the check box my mouse pointer changes to the circle icon that looks like it moves in a circle. Sortta like the busy or what it does during boot. Hard to describe by typing it out but if you make that change you'll see what I am talking about. I had this setup like this in previous versions of openSUSE so I am not sure what it is doing or what else I need to do to make the mouse pointer just the arrow like normally. I don't want the users to be able to right-click on the desktops to get a menu nor add icons so unchecking the show_desktop has served my needs.
