I have a bunch of .7z files in a directory, and I need to put each one of them into a separate directory, named after the file (without extention). The command line I use:

Copying fails though:

PS. I don't want to use scripts, I want to do it using simple commands and piping.

I have a single directory of pairs of files, with the pairs sharing a string as the beginning of the filename:
SF1-27F1492R-clone01_T3_A18_001.ab1
SF1-27F1492R-clone01_T7_A20_002.ab1
SF1-27F1492R-clone02_T3_A19_003.ab1
SF1-27F1492R-clone02_T7_A21_004.ab1
...etc
I need to create a subdirectory for each pair then move the pair into the subdirectory.
I accomplished the first step using:
$find /foo -name '*T3*' -exec mkdir '{}.wrk' ;
I can use a regex to designate the pair and associate the directory, but how do I use regex in a path as the output of a move command?

I'm not sure if this is possible or even where to start. I assume that this can be done with an sh script using tar or similar.I have several very large zip files that contain images for all of the products in my online store. Each image is named after its 13 digit SKU (for example, 9987788000012.jpg). In order to import products into my store, all images are placed into a media directory. Unfortunately, there are over 100,000 images.
So I would like to break the images into sub-folders based on file name. For example, when I extract store_images.zip (or tar or whatever), my extract script would create directories (if they don't already exist) based on the first three digits of each image name, placing each image into the appropriate bottom level directory. For example, "9987788000012.jpg" would be placed in the following directory "media/9/9/8", with media as the root and "8" as the directory that holds any images that start with "998". Perhaps two sub-folders would be less cumbersome.Assuming this requires a script, particularly since it involves scanning image names, creating folders, and saving images to specific directories, which language would serve my needs best? PHP? Has anyone had to do something similar?

I am wondering how I would go about creating a .deb file that would extract it's contents to two different folders. I would have one file directory that should be extracted to /opt and I have a second that should bextracted to the current user's home folder and /etc/skel - How would I go about doing this?

Description: I am a newly appointed system engineer taking care of linux servers. We have a new set of data coming in which need below configuration: How to do a script with function?:
for files with ".txt" in sm
copy each of the files to folder : sm1 and sm2 (log every copy)
if succesful:
remove original
log into the log file
if not successful: (not successful copying 1 particular file to all the folders)
retain and retry
log into the log file
mail out the admin with that particular file name
I have already do try a bit:
cd /export/home/
for dir in sm1 sm2; do
cp -p sm/*.txt $dir/
done
Is my starting right? How to do the rest parts?

I downloaded some backgrounds from Gnome Art and am having trouble moving them to the backgrounds folder. I've been trying this: sudo mv desktop <filename> usr/share/backgrounds.I moved to the desktop to make it easier.

I have a directory tree with lots of folders. I need to gather all files of same type, say .txt, and place them in a different folder all by themselves.
I know I can use the mv command, but it won't let me go through all the subdirectories of my folder, just the current one. How can I search through all subdirectories for all .txts or whatever and move them to a folder of my choosing?

I have an internal hard drive and an external hard drive, both with about 350 GB of data. The data came from the same source, but over the last couple of years, different people have moved files around to different directories, and some files have been deleted. Now I want to merge all the files onto the internal hard drive. I estimate that 80% of the files on the external hard drive are the same, so I don't want to copy 290+ GB of data over when I already have it.
Therefore, I need a way to find just the files on the external hard drive that don't already exist on the internal one. In other words, I need to create two lists of file names irrespective of directories and compare them, selecting only the file names that exist in one list OR the other. I've Googled for solutions but can't find anything suitable. There are ways to create text files of the file names and compare them with diff, but they have to be in the same order, and since these files are in vastly different directories, that won't work.

I need to replace ":" from multiple files names, since I am going to copy those files from a linux partition, which admit the ":" to a FAT32 partition, which does not.
Example:
original name: eg06_ana_21-05-06_09:21:03.JPG
wished name: eg06_ana_21-05-06_09-21-03.JPG
I have googled a lot but I have not been able to adapt the examples given by people to my aim.
It seems that rename command is what I should use, but I have no idea to build the correct pearl expression.

I am supposed to take some small files, and print them to a specific printer, such that the small files are concatenated into one file. The file name has to be included in the file that gets printed.

I have limited experience in terminal, but let me first explain what I am trying to do to see if there is some easier way to do it. Basically I want to change the skin in aMSN. I downloaded the new skin but am unable to unzip or move it without /root permissions. I don't know how to acquire this without being in terminal. So I figured there had to be some way to go into the terminal and use it to move the unzipped folder from the desktop to the aMSN skins folder.

I'm having trouble with Ubuntu 10.10 and stable device names. When I installed Ubuntu, the root drive was the only one in the machine; it obviously got /dev/sda.
After the base installation, I installed three additional 2TB drives to make RAID-5 array. Ubuntu renamed the root drive to /dev/sdd. While annoying I lived with it.
After creating a single partition set to "Linux raid autodetect" on each drive, I created the RAID-5 array:

All was going well until a reboot. When rebooting Ubuntu decided to make the root drive /dev/sda this time and now mdadm --detail /dev/md0 reports:

Im trying to compare two files and I only want to display the user names that are in the first file and not the second.
So I have one file named final.txt (which contains every user name and only the user names in a list no other information)
Then I have another file Over1.txt (which only contains certain users that have different permissions This file is also setup differently with the user name and some information about the user after the user name.
I need a way to compare final.txt to over1.txt so that I will only display the names that are in final.txt but not Over1.txt
Ive tried using diff and comm but just cant seem to get it two work correctly. Im not sure if im missing a option or what.

I used about all available OS 's. In all systems I used a quick acces system like the file browser applet in Ubuntu. In fact I "cannot live without", specially if I am working on jobs and I have to work with a lot of files in different directories. Opening lots of folders and endless clicking is really not an option to me. Does anyone know if there is such an applet or possibility in Unity (because gnome 2 applets will not work in Natty)?

Objective: To move or backup all the 30 days old files to the other server within LAN. I have tried testing it first within the server by performing below commands:
find /usr/test1/* -mtime +30 -exec mv {} /usr/test2/ ;
But I'm getting "mv: missing file argument" error when I try this.

I just got myself a OCZ vertex 2 SSD and have been moving cache directories to a ram drive to try to help extend the life of my SSD and improve system performance. I have created a ram drive /tmp directory in fstab like soCode: tmpfs /tmp tmpfsnodev,nosuid,noexec,mode=1777 0 0 And have since moved my Firefox temporary files to the /tmp directory and it have gotten me thinking, what else can I move here. I am going to upgrade my computer to have 8gb�s of ram which is way more than I�ll ever need.I would like to move the transmission cache dir there but I don�t know how to. Anyone have any tips on that? I was thinking of maybe a script that will run when I login to create a symbolic link?
