OpenSUSE Install :: Mounting /sys Directories With Nosuid Option?

May 19, 2010

I'm trying to mount some file systems in the /sys directory with the nosuid option. Upon executing the command:

mount -o remount,nosuid /sys/kernel/security
or
remount nosuid /sys/kernel/security

/etc/mtab will show that they have been applied, but upon restart of the machine, the nosuid option is removed.

Soooo, the question is why are they being removed? Can /sys files carry the nosuid option?

OpenSUSE Install :: Should There Be Option To Download ISO Option For CD Installation

Jul 18, 2010

when I go to download 11.3 I am presented with the installation medium for a DVD installation with a button that says download DVD. Should there be an option to download an ISO option for a CD installation on this page along with the DVD version? Some of our older machines can only read CD's with a max size of 500+ megs.

Ubuntu Servers :: Mounting Home Directories Of Users To Respective Desktops

Jan 8, 2010

I'm trying to mount the home directories of the users on the server to the respective desktops. I would like to use the libpam-mount module. do you guys know, how make it run? I am using 9.10 both server and desktop and the most recent pam-mount module. I know that the /etc/security/pam_mount.conf.xml needs to be edited. I added the following to it:
Code:
<volume user="username" fstype="cifs" server="IP-Server" path="/home/username" mountpoint="/media/server" />

OpenSUSE Install :: /home And / Directories

Sep 14, 2010

In system info my ext4 /home directory shows total space of 51.7 gigs with 51.5 gigs available.

My ext4 / directory shows total space 19.7 gig and 7.7 gig free. Whenever I install anything it goes to the / (as guess root directory) In Dolphin it shows my /home directory but anything installed under that seems like it installs on the / directory.

If I have 51 gigs free where is it and how do I gain access?

rm [non-empty directory's name] -r

....and not....

rmdir [non-empty directory's name]-i

..or..

rmdir [non-empty directory's name} -ir

backround:

I just downloaded and innstalled 11.2 about 6 weeks ago, and Have updated several times since... I was very frustrated and found that I did in fact have the proper pernissions to delete this directory. I checked multiple forums for much longer than I would like to admit, and they kept telling me to use (in the end) the same commands.....I finally stumbled upon a forum that again told me to use rm [nonempty directory's name] ...and viola

my /bash can't be outdated can it

OpenSUSE Install :: Using Cd ~/ Results In / And // Entries For All Directories

May 5, 2011

Since I updated from 11.2 to 11.4 an annoying bug seems to have crept into the shell.

If I type the following and hit tab I get:

cd ~/.kde
.kde/ .kde// .kde4/ .kde4//

i.e. each directory has a / and // version for some reason. I have to enter a / and hit tab again to proceed.

If however I type the following and hit tab I get:

cd /home/tux/.kde
.kde/ .kde4/

i.e. correct as expected.

The ls command does not do this.

This seems like a bug.

OpenSUSE Install :: Option (Installation Regarding To Opensuse And Windows Server 2008?

Mar 20, 2011

right now, my machine runs ubuntu 10.10 due to work issue, i need to use windows server 2008 R2 (its a windows exclusive company) but i never used any of the active directory or anything from the windows server (only experience with windows is visual studio and those GAMES!), so i figure i need to practice a bit on my own b4 starting the job and just at the same time I found out as a univ student i get it for free! And plus, I am finding opensuse a better option for me than ubuntu So im wondering what i should do regarding these 2 systems here s some option

1). Install openSuse 11.4, and install VirtualBox and use windows server 2008 R2 on vbox
2). Install windows server 2008 R2 and then install openSuse alongside with it
3). Install windows server 2008 R2 and install openSuse in virtualBox

I have been using linux as my primary OS for more than a year now and I rlly need it for both school and my own entertainment. So wondering which option would best work out for me

wat are your opinions? PS: my machine is about 2 years ago a Dell laptop, with core 2 duo p8700 (2.53ghz) 4GB ram, and nvidia gfx, which even tho is still fast, but isnt rlly that snappy when it comes to virtualization even running xp in a virtual machine is quite laggy at times :S

I currently have Windows XP running on this laptop, but it's very slow.I downloaded openSUSE-11.3-GNOME-LiveCD-i686.iso and sucessfully burned it to a CD.I have the laptop bios set to boot from CD, and it appears to be doing that no problem. When it boots I first see the welcome screen, then the openSUSE Installer, whether I select the Live (GNOME) option, or the Installation.. it loads the kernel, and then loads the KIWI boot systemit is on the third event, waiting for CD/DVD dvices to appear... that something seems to fail... I then see Failed to detect CD/DVD or USB drivethen a rebootexception and it reboots in 120 seconds.

OpenSUSE Install :: Hard Drive To Replace Old One That Contained The /var And /home Directories?

Apr 25, 2010

I am installing a new hard drive to replace my old one that contained the /var and /home directories. I don't want to copy the whole directories, especially from home because there is a lot I don't need in it.What I need to do is set the mount points for the two partitions I have made on the new drive to /var and /home, but it will not let me do this with the other drive still running. I can't unmount /var and /home while the computer is running, and I would guess that having two drives with /var and /home on them would not work.

So, how can I set the mount points on the new drive and copy the files I need from the old to the new one? It would seem that would require two /home partitions to be mounted at the same time, but I don't think that is possible. I am sure there is some way, probably many ways knowing Linux so please,

I went though the process and when done, copied data to the device etc. My house had a powercut the other day and I noticed that the device did not mount automatically upon restart. Unfortunately, I have forgotten the de-cryption password and have lost access to my data. Is there a way of either recovering my password or getting the partition to mount without the password so I can access the data, copy/back up and then re-create the partition without encryption?

OpenSUSE Install :: No USB Boot Option In BIOS?

Aug 29, 2010

Under Windows XP in the C Drive, I've downloaded PLoP boot manager to force the USB boot. I've tried about a thousand things and I get a different error message at different times from each attempt. I've got all of those documented, and I imagine I'll need to post them. I'm just not doing it quite yet as sometimes I give too much information and I really feel that I'm being an idiot here, missing something simple.

I'd like to install openSUSE onto the D Drive, using the USB and PLoP to boot it. I've downloaded openSUSE's torrents for all iso's (Net, DVD and LiveKDE). In order to get those files onto the USB, I first format to FAT32. I've tried UNetBootIn, LiLi, and mounting the iso on Daemon Tools and then copy-paste into the hard drive. None of these work and they all give different errors. Is this even possible, am I wasting my time? This is getting incredibly frustrating as I've been at it for nearly a week.
