General :: Move Photos From Hard Drive To DVD Using Mandriva Spring 2008

Jun 6, 2011

This is the equivilent of a DJ going into the"dusty records bin"to play an old song.I've got a hard drive that's left over from a Mandriva Spring 2008 computer and I need to copy the photos off it to a DVD and move them to a computer running Ubuntu.I can't seem to get the Ubuntu computer to access what's on the Mandriva drive, so I've loaded Mandriva Spring 2008 on another computer.

I've accessed the photos I need easily enough, but can't copy them to a storage medium so I can move them to the other computer. I've tried two USB devices, an external DVD drive and a flash drive and can't just copy (or drag 'n drop) the files to the other devices. This evening I may try a portable hard drive, again with a USB connection, and see if that works.

If there's a fool-proof way to do this by using a terminal, I'll try that. I haven't been able to devote enough time to Linux to familiarize myself with terminal commands. Or, if there's a program that will run under Mandriva Spring 2008 that will let me accomplish the transfer, I'll try that as well.

General :: Mandriva 2010 Spring Running In Parallels Desktop 5?

Jul 23, 2010

have very limited experience with command line interfaces in Mac OSX (the OS that I'm used to). Please pitch any replies at the appropriate level My problem:I've installed Mandriva Spring 2010 Free in a Parallels Desktop 5 VM running inside Mac OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard).Parallels has a set of tools that I need to install to make the VM play nicely with my host OS. It is here that I'm running into problems. When trying to install Parallels Tools I get a warning that 'Some components needed for parallels tools installation are missing in your system;. I'm offered the chance to download them automatically. This download always fails and I'm told that I need to download 'kernel sources' manually and try again.

After some considerable research (remember I'm TOTALLY new to Linux) I found out what this means and have installed what I believe are the correct files using the 'install and remove software' window. As I understand it, I need to download the source files of the kernel I am using (exactly the same version), so I now have:kernel-desktop-latest - Version 2.6.33.5ernel-source-latest - Version 2.6.33.5These are 'virtual rpm's that make sure i always have the latest kernel versions, which as I understand it means that I should have the latest kernel and corresponding kernels sources... but I still get the damn error message telling me to install 'kernel sources' when I try to run the parallels tools installer.

General :: Move Smaller Hard Drive To Partition On A Larger Hard Drive?

Mar 16, 2010

My parents bought a new hard drive for a laptop that I've owned for several years. It's much larger than the current one, so I plan on splitting it up to dual boot it with Ubuntu.I have no problem with partitioning a drive (I always keep a LiveCD handy), but my question is this: how can I go about moving the existing partition to the new drive? This is a laptop, so I can't simply plug the new drive into another slot.

Also, even if I manage to move it, will Windows still work on the new drive in a larger partition? I've had this laptop for quite a while, and I've lost the recovery discs that came with it a long time ago. I also have a lot of software without CDs to reinstall them with. This makes not reinstalling Windows a high priority.

Software :: LMMS Compilaton Error On Mandriva 2008, Concerning Freetype _DIR Is Not Set?

Dec 18, 2009

when i try to compile LMMS, I get this error:

CMake Error: Freetype_DIR is not set. It must be set to the directory containing FreetypeConfig.cmake in order to use Freetype.

there is no file on my machine named that or any lowercase/uppercase combinations thereof.

here is the full spit out:

[jayjay@localhost lmms-0.4.5]$ cd build
[jayjay@localhost build]$ make
PROCESSOR: Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 CPU 3.00GHz
Machine: i586-mandriva-linux-gnu
-- Target host is 32 bit
-- Found Qt-Version 4.3.3
code....

i looked at version 2010 RPM file lists, still no FreeTypeConfig.cmake.

I even built cmake 2.8 from cmake's SF page, it has FindFreetype.cmake, but not FreeTypeConfig.cmake.

What can I do?

Ubuntu :: Move Installation To New Hard Drive

Mar 2, 2010

The HDD on which I currently have my Ubuntu partition(s) (as well as a Windows partition) is dying on me (non-zero bad sector count, with warning pop-ups from Ubuntu). I have already ordered a replacement hard drive*, but I was wondering if there is a simple way to transfer the contents of my current hard drive to my new hard drive in such a way that the new one will be a fully functional replacement (e.g. so that everything will boot and run properly on the new hard drive). Which is a different size (bigger) than the current drive.

OpenSUSE Install :: Move SUSE Hard Drive To New PC?

Feb 26, 2010

I came in this morning only to find that the Intel Core2 hyperthreading Dell machine is dead. It appears the processor is fried.

I have a new white-box X2 system that I will replace the dead Dell with. The X2 (AMD) does not have a hard-drive (HDD) so, I will simply put the SATA hard-drive into the PC.

Some of you may know how to do this, but I don't know where to begin after I get the Hard-drive in. (I know how to move a Windows configuration from one PC to another and handle it as it begins to blue screen (BSOD), but I don't have a clue with Linux)

This system was built with GRUB. At the very least, I expect the GRUB boot managet to surface on the display. But, what next....

I was testing an OpenSuse setup as a server. Nothing fancy and NO applications added. The only customization was the MB's LAN card and the display was set at 1024x768. I had 2 users, root and myself. What would you do? Is there some boot time options that I should follow?

Ubuntu :: Move /home To Larger Hard Drive?

Jun 19, 2011

I'm sure that this is posted somewhere but I have not been able to find the right search terms. I have a Dell Vostro 1700 which has 2 physical hard drives. I installed Natty to the 1st drive and during the install I used the entire 2nd drive as /home. I would like to upgrade the 2nd drive to a larger faster drive. I have the new drive in a USB enclosure so that I can access both drives. I'm pretty sure I need to boot from the CD to do this. Then I need to copy all files unmount the small drive then shut down, install the larger drive and have the system recognize it as /home. I am just starting to creep out of N00B stage and don't want to screw this up.

Software :: Gparted - Move Xp Install To A Bigger Hard Drive

Aug 25, 2010

I wonder if anyone can help me. A little background, I wanted to move my xp install to a bigger hard drive. I used Saikee's method and worked fine (as usual). My machine was a dual boot system, the xp partition was with little space so I get rid of my vista install, deleted its partition. That went fine also. Rebooted directly to XP.The problem is as follows:

a) In order to increase the size of my xp partition (old machine, athlon64 1gb of RAM) I moved my data partition to the left in order to have unallocated space near the xp partition. That was successful, I rebooted and everything was fine.

b) I run again Gparted and increased the size of the partition. Gparted told me the process was successfully applied. I rebooted.

c) after post I get the following error "error reading disk, press ctr-alt-del". I did it like five times and I get the same message.

d) With my xp install disk I tried fixboot and fixmbr and nothing changed

Since I have the original hd, I did it again, and the same thing happened after resizing xp partition, before the resizing process I was able to boot normally. I used Gparted live cd v 0.6.2 and as far as I recall I left "adjust to mib" option

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Scroll Through Hundreds Of Photos & Move Good Ones To A Separate Folder?

Nov 19, 2010

I'm relatively new to Ubuntu and am just trying to get basic functionality without having to punt back to Windows applications on Wine (such as Irfanview). All I want to do is step through photos (by pressing a key, such as the space bar) to view & then press a keyclick to move the good ones to a separate folder.

This is so fundamental that I must assume there must be software in Ubuntu which can accomplish those two simple tasks (step through a folder and move a file to another folder). Yet, I have The Gimp, GNU Paint, Krita, KSnapshot, XFig, XPaint, etc., and none of them appear to have this basic functionality (which Irfanview has, but on Windows).

What program can view and easily MOVE the photo to a stated directory in a single keystroke? Note: All the programs can "open a file" and "save as" but this is NOT the desired fundamental operation. The fundamental operation is:

- Press a key (spacebar would be nice) to scroll to the next photo in a folder.

- Press another key combination ("control + m" would be nice) to move the photo to a stated folder

- The "index" should NOT be reset (that is, the next spacebar should show the next photograph in the folder, not jump back, perhaps hundreds of photos, to the first photo as The Gimp does, for example, after a save).

- It's ok to set the move-to folder the first time, but it should not ask each and every time which folder as it should be the default for the move command after the first move.

Note: I also tried making the icons in the Nautilus browser huge and then control-click selecting the good ones, but that makes ALL icons at all times huge, and the scroll in Nautilus is atrocious, so, in effect, that was a failure. I need a graphic program that performs this simple task. This is so fundamental of a need (to scroll through and move just the good photos to a stated folder) that I find it hard to believe I can't (yet) find a graphics display program capable of scrolling and moving photos.
